Volume 41, Number 10 by George Swinford To ring in Christmas week and the first official days of winter Ray Skjelbred brings us an augmented version of his Yeti Chasers. As always, Ray will lead the Yeti Chasers from the piano. Steve Wright will play trumpet, cornet and reed instruments as the occasion demands. In the rhythm section Dave Brown will provide the bass and Mike Daugherty the drums. To augment the regulars named above, Ray will add Dave Holo on trumpet and Jim Armstrong on trombone, providing a full Dixieland front line for this engagement. Ray’s tune lists are always thoughtfully assembled. He usually includes some “good old good ones” that we wouldn’t otherwise hear. Each member of this sextet is a well- liked veteran of many of our concerts. They are musically well acquainted, having played together often, in various combinations. Led by Ray’s incomparable piano work they will lay down some inspiring jazz, in danceable tempos, with harmonies easy on the ear. Spare a few hours from your last hectic week of Christmas preparations! With great music and service from the Elks kitchen and bar, we can all “Eat, Drink and be Merry.”.Join us and celebrate the coming of winter, as the Yeti Chasers Plus Two play at the Ballard Elks, from 1 pm to 4:30 on the 18th! Notes from the Prez Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all you lovers of Traditional Jazz. Let’s make 2017 a year of recruitment. Our membership has dwindled from our historical 1000+ in the early days to less than 300 now. Attrition is the main cause. The only way we can combat attrition is to bring in new members. If even 1/4 of our current members each brought a friend to join the fun we would increase our numbers by 25% plus. I think that’s a reasonable goal, don’t you? None of us wants to see our Society keep losing members so I’m asking each of you to give some thought to how we can increase our membership. I’d like to hear your ideas, call or email me your thoughts and we’ll make it work. OK? Cheers, Judy December 2016 Dixieland Memories I think my first exposure to real “Traditional Jazz” was down at Seaside, Oregon in the summer of 1950. The Castle Jazz Band was playing at the skating rink in Seaside. At the time we had a vacation home in Seaside and spent a fair bit of time down there in the summer. Anyway, my folks, my brother and I were walking up and down Broadway (the main drag) on a Saturday summer evening, when we heard this great music coming out of the windows of the Seaside skating rink. There was no skating, just people dancing to this great music, the Castle Jazz Band from Portland, Oregon. I still remember one of the songs, “I’ve Been Floating Down That Old Green River.” Another one was Kansas City Torch. Later on, I bought one of their records and many years later had it transferred to a CD. It’s kind of scratchy, but I play it every once in a while. I still love the harmonies. I found some of their old stuff for sale on the web. Since that was about 65 years ago, I don’t know if any of those guys are still around, but they surely did plant a seed in me that has lasted over all this time. by Bob Rogers

You learn how to play jazz by listening and watching  people  perform,  and with the  recent  youtube  phenomenon  on  the computer,  the  possibilities  are  endless. Really all you have  to do  is experiment with a name or a band or a song title and  the choices pop up. It allows for repeated listening  so  that  you  can  watch  how players  interact or follow the  individual acts of playing and listening. It really is a  little  listening  and  watching  miracle. There are many reprints of old jazz films and  TV  shows,  but  also  many  original recordings from bands around the world. There  are  also  outstanding  individual videographers,  particularly  Rae  Ann Berry  or  SFRae  Ann  and  Michael Steinman  who  posts  his  own  and  other YouTubes on his website Jazz Lives.

I have spent plenty of time watching hands  and  fingering  of  pianists  like

WATCHING JAZZ

by Ray Skjlbred

Earl Hines, Joe Sullivan and Jess Stacy, and  I  have  searched  through  a  variety of  YouTubes  when  I  need  to  shore  up knowledge  of  a  song  that  I  don’t  quite know. When  I  recently  played  a  couple festivals with  the Grand Dominion Jazz Band and knew their set lists in advance, I  found  it  comforting  to  search  through their YouTubes  (mostly  from  Rae Ann) and listen to the material.

There  are  some  mysteries  about permission to show material (musicians should be on board with anyone doing recording) and sometimes official permission problems  that I don’t quite understand.  I  used  to  look  at an  hour  long  Earl  Hines  piano  film  on Vimeo  and  one  day  it  disappeared.  It had  been  “taken  down.” But  some  time later  it  was  back.  I  don’t  know  why. Many  years  ago  a  videotape  popped  up of  the  Golden,  CO  jazz  festival  where

bands  were  mixed  together  on  a  final tune. I was playing piano at first but then Turk Murphy  gave me  his  horn  to  play and  partway  through  my  solo  the  tape or whatever  it was  ran  out.  I  had  some fun  watching  this  one  for  many  jazz friends  all  playing  at  once.  Then  one day  it  disappeared,  never  to  return.  I’m not  sure  why.  But  almost  anything  you want to hear is out there somewhere. Rae Ann has many of my Cubs  band,  Steve Wright  has  many  by  the  Yeti  Chasers, Louis  Armstrong  is  out  there  and  Kid Ory and Duke Ellington and on and on. If you haven’t tried it, you should.

Of  course  the  huge  selection  of YouTubes  can  cause  a  person  to  sink  in and  maybe  never  return  to  what  passes for  the  real world.  I might  turn  to  a Tim McCoy B-western from the early 30’s. or the first Marciano/Walcott fight,  or  some poetry readings, or the song of red-winged blackbirds,  or  the  Burlington  Zephyr  or Ernie Kovacs. Maybe  it  is  a  little  aid  to someone becoming a citizen of the world.
