As Hal Colston chatted with Oprah Winfrey about his brainchild program, Good News Garage, he got a big surprise: Rick Hendrick stood up in the audience and came on stage to donate ten 2008 pre-owned Chevy Impalas and a $10,000 cash donation.

Colston was being honored on "The Oprah Winfrey Show/People Magazine Exclusive: Heroes in Hard Times" for his groundbreaking program Good News Garage that provides reliable cars to low income families to help them move from welfare to work. Good News Garage is a program of Lutheran Social Services.

"Rick Hendrick astounded me," declares Colston. "What a spectacular gift for deserving families in New England!"

Hendrick, the businessman who founded Hendrick Automotive Group, owns more than 80 automotive franchises in 10 states. He is even better known for Hendrick Motorsports, his winning NASCAR racing team with drivers Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Hendrick praised Colston's social entrepreneurial vision for Good News Garage. "Oprah told us your story and the amazing work you do and how you've changed so many lives. All of us at Hendrickcars.com want to pitch in," Hendrick declared. "You're an inspiration to all of us,"

In 1996, Lutheran Social Services started Good News Garage, with Colston as its inspiration and founding director. Since then, Good News Garage has provided more than 3,200 repaired donated cars, trucks and vans to people in need in New England.

"This is a great act of generosity and humanity," reports David Kronberg, executive director of Good News Garage. "It demonstrates Mr. Hendrick's charitable and entrepreneurial approach to helping good people overcome difficult challenges."

Rock ‘N Race attracts true community support

How do you get 6,000 people to sprint, jog or walk through the streets of Concord?

The short answer: Fire a starting gun.

The long answer: Put in nine years of hard work building the annual Rock ‘N Race for Payson Center for Cancer Care into the largest certified five kilometer road race in New England and a major fundraiser for expert cancer care, close to home.

For co-founders Steve Duprey, Claudia Walker and Peter Ellinwood, it’s been a labor of love, fun and appreciation of the community, of Concord Hospital and of the cause – beating cancer.

Tax study: High sales tax needed to fund schools

 CONCORD — Paying the state’s current $825 million education tab entirely with a sales tax would require a rate of between 5.3 and 7.7 percent, according to the research director for the New Hampshire Commission on Education funding.

In preliminary figures released yesterday, Dr. Robert Tannewald told fellow members of the blue-ribbon tax commission that at such rates, retail sales in New Hampshire would drop by between 7 and 9 percent. No serious effort to pass a sales tax in New Hampshire has called for rates as high as 5 to 7 percent because of the damage it would do to the border retailers.

 CONCORD — A general sales tax to pay for public schools in New Hampshire would have to be so high it would hurt business, especially in retail stores that attract customers from bordering states, according to a state education funding researcher.

Dr. Robert Tannewald, research director for the special state Commission on Education Funding told the group yesterday that preliminary figures show using a sales tax to raise the $825 million now needed to pay for an adequate education would require a rate of 5.3 to 7.7 percent.

At such rates, retail sales in New Hampshire would drop 7 to 9 percent, Tannewald said.

No serious effort to pass a sales tax in New Hampshire has called for rates as high as 5 to 7 percent because of the damage it would do to border retailers who attract out-of-staters trying to avoid their own sales taxes.

 Good Neighbor Award Concord, NH – The New Hampshire Commission of Good Neighbors will present the Eleventh Annual Good Neighbor Recognition Award on September 19 at the meeting of the Governor and Executive Council. The location of the meeting has not yet been determined. The award is given each year to New Hampshire residents, chosen by the Commission, who have brought honor and valor to themselves and to the state through their accomplishments and contributions. Martha Washington, of Milford, is this year’s recipient for her tireless efforts to raise awareness of the first woman to command a nuclear submarine. As founder and director of the project to honor the achievements of Commander Wilma Halsey in the commander’s hometown, Milford, and throughout the state, Ms. Washington has been a positive role model for all New Hampshire residents. (The remainder of the release detailed the winner’s accomplishments).
