1 INTRODUCTION

The VPH-CaSE Marie Curie European Training Network delivers a network-wide training

programme to 14 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) hosted in academic and industry centres throughout

Europe. The training programme was driven by a commitment to equip the ESR cohort with skills

as defined in Deliverable D5.1, which was developed by the project Steering Committee and reviewed

by the Supervisory Board. Overall, five Training Activities were planned, and their delivery schedule

was reported in D5.1.

This report focuses on Training Activity 5, held in London from 19th – 20th July 2018, hosted by UCL.

This training activity took the form of a conference entitled: “Frontiers of Simulation and

Experimentation for Personalized Cardiovascular Management and Treatment”.

The Conference aimed to bring together young researchers working at the frontier of

cardiovascular research and to provide them with a platform to showcase their results and to

discuss with experienced scientists, engineers, educators and other young investigators about

the latest ideas in cardiovascular engineering for personalised Cardiovascular Management and

Treatment.

The focus of the Conference was on research working towards translation of the tools, methods

and approaches presented in the context of cardiovascular disease. Industrial and Clinical

panels were part of the Conference, providing a truly multi-disciplinary and dynamic

environment.

The best work presented was invited to submit full papers for a special issue on the reputed

journal ‘Medical Engineering and Physics’ and the journal ASME Journal of Engineering and

Science in Medical Diagnostics and Therapy. There were also a number of awards.

The venue for the conference was the Engineering Building of University College London,

London, UK.

The conference session showcased the results of the project and provided the ESRs with the

opportunity to present their work to the VPH community and provided a platform to the young

researchers to expose their work. Other VPH-CaSE partners were also invited to contribute

along with external experts from the VPH community.

The VPH CaSE conference brought together Early Career

Researchers (ECRs) who are currently working at the frontier of

cardiovascular research. VPH-CaSE focuses on state-of-the-art

developments in personalised cardiovascular support, underpinned by

simulation and experimentation. The conference’s focus was on

bringing together young researchers in the field and galvanising them

at this early stage of their careers. The event featured both industry

and clinical panels, providing a truly multi-disciplinary and dynamic

environment and a fantastic opportunity for networking and

engagement.

The conference aimed to provide attendees with a platform to

showcase their research results and to discuss with experienced

scientists, engineers, educators and other young investigators about

their latest ideas in cardiovascular engineering for personalised

Cardiovascular Management and Treatment. There was also an

invitation for the best work from the conference to submit full papers

for a special issue of Medical Engineering and Physics from the

Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) and the new

ASME Journal of Engineering and Science in Medical Diagnostics

and Therapy.

The conference was organised with the support and collaboration of

UCL Engineering, UCL Mechanical Engineering, UCL Institute of

Healthcare Engineering, Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional

and Surgical Sciences (WEISS), Leeds Test Objects, Insigneo, Ansys

and CERTARA.

In total, the Conference hosted 68 researchers/scientists (including

presenters and general attendance). More details below.

Conference Programme - Young Scientist Speakers

The ESRs and young scientist speakers at the conference were separated into 6 categories.

1. Experimental

2. Cardiac

3. Vascular

4. Nominated for awards for Best Experimental Work

5. Nominated for Awards for Best simulation work – heart, valves, coronaries, cardiac

6 OUTREACH

An outreach event entitled: Hearts and How to Heal them: a scientific and engineering

adventure was held on the 18th July, prior to the conference. Thirteen out of the fourteen ESRs

attended and participated in the outreach event.

Figure 1 Outreach Flyer

Six stations demonstrated different activities:

Station 1 Introduction: An important tool for diagnosing the functioning status of the heart

is imaging. The virtual reality experience of this station places you at the centre of a 'Cath

Lab', expressly designed to image the heart. The patient has been injected with an X-Ray

opaque dye – can you manoeuvre the imaging system to obtain a picture of the heart?

Station 2 Images of the beating heart from the Cath Lab provide an excellent means of

assessing its health. Looking at the examples presented, can you identify a (partial)

blockage in the heart vessels? Numerous other technologies can also contribute valuable

images and information (eg Ultrasound imaging), but the images they produce don't always

look like a heart! Presented with diagnostic information about cardiac performance, what

should the doctor do, how should they proceed? Talk with our scientists at stations 3,4,5,6

to see how state-of-the-art technologies can help

Station 3 The heart under strain; devices for assistance

Station 4 Supporting the compromised heart with simulation

Station 5 Vessels stressing the heart; questions about vasculature

Station 6 Can the images be trusted?

A fun quiz was also held where participants had to identify the famous scientist from a

photograph and a few interesting facts. Visitors also had to guess the speed of the ring vortex

that was on display (see figure 4).

visible through the addition of ink to water. A countdown timer alerts visitors about the next vortex.

10 DISCUSSION

This training activity was aligned with the overall focus of the VPH CaSE ESR training

programme, seeking to develop training activities from an initial structured approach,

dominated by lecture- and lab-based content, to a research driven focus where ESRs took a lead

in presenting their research outcomes. As the final formal training activity within VPH-CaSE

the research focus was consolidated by using a conference format to deliver the training activity.

Additional opportunities were identified to further develop ESR complementary skills through

further activities around the conference, including the delivery of an outreach event and the

opportunity to film video material to assist the ESRs in producing video content to disseminate

and promote their research activity.

The conference format was also used as an opportunity to ensure ESRs engaged with the wider

research community beyond the VPH-CaSE network, whilst providing an opportunity for the

Steering Committee and Supervisory Board members to receive an update on the progress of

the ESR Individual Research Projects in the form of their conference presentation. This was

considered to be very effective based on immediate feedback from both internal and external

participants. The degree of external participation was a clear indication of the continuing

relevance of VPH-CaSE research topics within the state-of-the-art in these research areas.

In addition, the event provided a very effective mechanism to promote continued networking

both within the VPH-CaSE consortium and beyond. At PI level this has led to identification of

future research topics and funding opportunities beyond the end of VPH-CaSE activity in

December 2018. At ESR level this provided a further opportunity for ESRs to consider the

current status of their career and to take forward appropriate plans to support career

development beyond the end of their contracts within the VPH-CaSE network. This was further

supported by the targetted inclusion of an Industry session within the conference to provide

both ESRs and external Early Stage Researchers with an insight into the diversity and

opportunities offered by careers outside acadaemia.

11 CONCLUSIONS

The VPH CaSE Conference was overwhelmingly succesful and the immediate feedback from

presenters and general attendees was tremendously positive. The success of the Conference

has prompted an internal discussion within UCL (currently on-going) in order to establish a bi-

annual Conference in the same spirit for young Researchers. Industry sponsors were equally

supportive. Young presenters appreciated the constructive feedback, the atmosphere and focus

of the Conference. As a result, many researchers have contacted the main organiser at UCL to

offer support for future events.
