Classic Disintermediation
Originally the professor was transferring information to thestudents through the institutes. Now the information can bedirectly transferred to the students with the help of onlineplatforms.
Eg: Online courses and classes like MIT open courseware
Drivers and mediation strategies:
Information intensity is high
Highly customized information
Information can be electronically delivered
Low search cost
Low risk

Remediation
Huges.net use technology not to cut down middleman but to work closely with many value
chain partners like IIMs
Drivers and mediation strategies:
Aggregation effect: products and services can differ in the way they are combined for specific
needs like bachelors and masters course

Network based mediation
Students can also learn from each other and the experts through the network.
Wikiversity: In this teachers, students, and researchers join to create openeducational resources and collaborative learning communities.
Drivers and mediation strategies:
Network effect: The utility of goods increases when the number of people using itincreases.
Standardization benefits to improve process for educating
Search cost is low

Business Model Transformation
1) For-Profit Subsidiary Model: The creation of afor-profit subsidiary within a non profit institution(public or private university)
For instance, if a faculty member wants to useintellectual property that he/she created in thefor-profit unit with the faculty membersmainstream courseor if the institution wants tomingle external and internal students in a single
course, it would need to develop new businessprocesses to bridge the for-profit and non profitsides of the institution.

2) Cost-Recovery Model: In this model, the onlinelearning unit operates within the administrativestructure of the larger institution, but functions as
a separate budget center, with the goal ofrecovering its costs through new tuition revenuegenerated by new students.
The challenge in this environment is to build new
budget and administrative processes that allowmainstream students to participate in thecontinuing/distance education program.

Cloud for education industry
Cloud can be described as on-demand computing.Access to applications and data anywhere, any time, from any device is the potential outcome.
Features: rapid elasticity and pay per use
Examples:
consumer-level cloud: Flickr and Facebook
Outlook Live: They provide email solutions for
education institutions. Institutional Learning management systems(LMSs):
Blackboard, Moodle

Types of cloud computing with examples:
Infrastructure as a service (IaaS): rent basic
computing resources such as processors and
storage, and use them to run their own
operating systems and applications.
Eg: Amazons Elastic Compute organisations can
use this infrastructure to run Linux servers on
virtual machines and scale up usage as required

Platform as a service (PaaS): This enables
customers to install their own applications
using a platform specified by the service
provider.
Example: Google Apps Engine where
developers can write and install applications
using the Python language.

software as a service (SaaS): Both data andapplication is on the cloud. The user requiresonly web browser.
Examples:Google Apps for Education andMicrosoft Live@edu which provide
