THE ALPACA STUD AND BOZEDOWN ALPACAS ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE ALPACA CLASSIC 2015!The Alpaca Classic, jointly hosted by The Alpaca Stud and Bozedown Alpacas, has fast become a much loved and anticipated event in the UK Alpaca Calendar. 2015 will be no different, with the weekend of September 5th and 6th bringing yet another educational but fun event with plenty of the usual twists and turns to keep things interesting!

At the 2015 Classic we are offering you the opportunity to think about your next step towards breeding success! Shauna Brummet, Ph.D, runs Hobby Horse farm Alpacas in the US state of Ohio. They believe production of high quality alpacas is both an Art and a science which are two elements they bring to their breeding. Shauna possesses a depth of understanding on genetics and all things Alpaca. Shauna is a leading voice on Estimated Progeny Differences in Alpacas and it is on this subject that she will be speaking at the 2015 Alpaca Classic. This topic is a real eye-opener, and of huge benefit to anyone who is serious about making the most of every breeding decision.

The Alpaca Classic will also be running discussion panels which will enable you to ask the questions you want answered! EPDs, whilst fascinating, can throw up a lot of questions – don’t panic though as our team of experts, including Shauna Brummet, will be on hand to answer your questions from the floor. Our second panel will consist of some of the UK’s most experienced Alpaca professionals. They will be at your disposal to answer your questions on husbandry, fibre, nutrition and much more besides!

As in previous years both Bozedown Alpacas and The Alpaca Stud will release some of their most coveted genetics to be offered for sale at the Alpaca Classic. This year we offer you the chance to select from an élite group of alpacas we refer to as The Spectrum! In this group there is every colour available for your consideration: so something to suit any breeders programme. The depth of pedigree and quality in this élite selection really does make them akin to that elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! This year’s sales will be both an Auction of 10 lots and a pen sale with a twist!

In addition to the normal weekend of events this year’s Classic will open its doors on the evening of Friday the 4th of September to anyone with a keen interest in Suri, either established or just simmering beneath the surface! The evening will be a celebration of Suri and not to be missed!

And never fear…he’s back….Brett Kaysen will be on hand once again to liven things up, keep us all on our toes and amongst other things participate in the panels including his extensive experience of EPDs in practice!

Alpaca Classic 2015

The Alpaca Stud was founded in 2005 with the objective of becoming a source of “Gold Standard” world genetics. In 2015 we are close, but Alpaca Breeding is an ever moving target and change is inevitable. 2014 saw John Potts retire, with his share in the business being purchased by James Corrigan-Stuart. James brings with him a fresh perspective that we are sure will

see the genetic development of the herd continue.James joining The Alpaca Stud afforded an opportunity for change. We recognise the need

to “step up” our business model in order to remain an industry leader. Part of our strength is the level of expertise we offer clients. In 2014, our daughter Alexandra and her husband Dries Verhoef joined the team. This addition of knowledge, some of which was gained outside of the UK, makes The Alpaca Stud a source of expertise that few can match, and can but give client’s confidence.

Our herd improvement programme was founded on the now highly renowned Dovecote Jaquinto who formed the cornerstone of the Huacaya breeding programme. We continue to add genetics, and in 2010 and 2013 we introduced males from the famous Snowmass herd in North America. These new herdsires complemented and enhanced the existing Huacaya bloodlines, adding such names to pedigrees as Snowmass’s Quechua, Matrix, Conopa, and the great Legacy himself. For the Suri programme, The Synergist was added, a grandson of the famous MacGyver from Great Lakes Ranch.

Home grown superstars continue to dominate including Nyetimber, Phoenix and Fusion who have all been crowned British Alpaca Futurity Herdsire Champions. As home to numerous British Alpaca Futurity Herdsire Championships, we can be confident of the prepotency of our Herdsires.

The Alpaca Stud’s commitment to the British fibre industry remains undiminished, our Huacaya fibre is still much sought after for its consistency and high quality, and we are now grading Suri with a view to its processing on a commercial scale in the UK.

A keen participant on the show circuit we value the exposure this creates for our clients and ourselves. We have enjoyed tremendous show successes, in both Huacaya and Suri. Our clients now enjoy their own success in the show ring, and we thank them for their continued support of both the British industry and ourselves.

The Alpaca Stud Objective:To breed alpacas that represent the breed type at its best, be that Suri or Huacaya. Our alpacas must be of the highest quality, with good health, sound conformation and genetically predisposed towards heavy cutting weights and longevity of fine fibre production, often described as “genetic fineness”. Alpacas bred for COMMERCIAL fibre production, not just the show ring.

Once again, we are offering some of our very best alpacas in this year’s auction, with enviable pedigrees thrown in for good measure. As proud co-hosts of the event, we do hope you enjoy the opportunity, as we will enjoy giving you a glimpse of the new plans for The Alpaca Stud’s future, along with the genetics that form part of that future for our clients and ourselves. The last ten years have been fun and the next ten promises to be even more fun as we near our ultimate goal.

“Bozedown Alpacas” is a name synonymous with highest quality, reliability and support, ensuring that our customers return time and again.

We are genuinely enthusiastic about the alpacas we breed and sell. Our business is built on providing the best possible advice and service to our customers, supported by our wide range of World

Class genetics. We supply prizewinning breeding stock to many other highly successful alpaca breeders throughout Europe.

Bozedown has amassed a wealth of knowledge, with over 26 years experience in the alpaca industry, which we are always keen to share. We offer a comprehensive range of services, such as stud services, livery, consultancy, and a range of courses, along with a wide range of prize-winning Suri and Huacaya genetics for sale with comprehensive back-up.

Joy Whitehead bought 5 alpacas in 1989, and Bozedown Alpacas was born. Niece Mary-Jo Smith joined her in 2000, and together they have proved a strong team in selection and breeding of both huacaya and suri alpacas. Now with more than 700 Alpacas, Bozedown Alpacas has won a phenomenal number of Champion and Supreme Champion alpacas and other show successes over the years.

Outstanding genetics have been imported since 2000 from the renowned Jolimont herd in Australia, and so we have some key genetics from Australia as building blocks in our Bozedown pedigrees, e.g. renowned Jolimont Sculptor and Jolimont Conquistador among others. More recently Herdsires Jolimont Reagan and Jolimont Rodrigo have made a valuable contribution, and premium pedigrees from Magical Farms in the USA have added further potency to our breeding lines. Our home-bred Champion Machos such as Huacayas Revel, Omen, Code Breaker, Bourbon, Achilles, Comet II, Frisbee and Ascendant, and Suris such as Idaho, Milo II, Singapore and Joust are currently cementing our very strongly established pedigrees. We are very excited to announce that in the spring of 2016 we will be adding some internationally recognised suri genetics to our stud line up. More details to be announced at the Classic 2015!

Bozedown Alpacas Objective:Our breeding aim is to build improvement into each successive generation for each and every alpaca on the farm!! We produce healthy strong-framed huacayas and suris with excellent conformation and advanced fleece types, and concentrate our breeding aims on further advancements in fleece fineness and fleece weights to satisfy our strongly growing UK fibre industry.

The Alpaca Classic auction includes some of the very best breeding ever produced at Bozedown Alpacas - just look at the champion pedigrees on offer! - this is your opportunity to make our success your success, by including more of Bozedown’s outstanding genetics in your breeding programme. In 2015, after 26 years in the business, we proudly present the fourth Alpaca Classic Event.

SEMINARSEPDs – Principles and PracticeEPDs is a powerful tool based on quantitative genetic analysis used by livestock breeders for decades to aid in sire selection and dam/progeny evaluation. We will learn about the history of the development of this quantitative tool and discuss its application in improving alpaca breeding practices and results on farms large and small. The history and approach of the Alpaca Registry, Inc. (now Alpaca Owners Association) to developing the EPD program as it is today will be shared with a discussion of issues and benefits for the alpaca industry worldwide.

EPDs – Bringing it all togetherWe will talk about how your industry may approach setting up an EPD program in the UK and Europe, data collection, interpretation and use of the EPD results, what the program can and cannot do, getting started and making rapid progress. You do not need to be a scientist to understand and use EPDs to benefit your alpaca business. We will break down the program to its key concepts and benefit to individual farms.

Alpaca Classic 2015

ROSTRUM AUCTION AND PEN SALESomething new for the fourth Alpaca Classic: we are changing the format of the sale process. There is to be an offering of 10 lots in a traditional auction conducted from the rostrum by Brett Kaysen for those of you that enjoy the thrill of the chase. In this part of the sale there will be the “breeders selection” lots, with Bozedown offering the free choice from its 2014 born drop of females, and The Alpaca Stud making a change by offering free choice from a group of five young males that have been carefully pre-selected to offer the very best of their genetics.

Then, in addition, we are offering a number of alpacas in a “Pen Auction”, which will cater for those who prefer to make their choices in a more relaxed atmosphere. Whilst all alpacas are to be sold with the same warranty as set out in the Terms and Conditions of sale, the Pen Auction will have some opportunity for discrete competition, and offers a varied range of alpacas designed to meet a broad spectrum of breeders’ needs and budgets.

All alpacas are available for inspection from Friday evening and throughout the weekend, with the auction scheduled for 5:00pm on Saturday. The Pen Auction is however to run throughout the weekend, with all offerings closed by 2:30pm on Sunday. Some alpacas in this part of the sale will be “closed” to further offers prior to this time. To avoid any misunderstanding the framework for this part of the weekend is set out below.

PEN AUCTION:• Buyers will register with the sale office and receive a “bidders” number.• Offers can be made either in person via the sale office, by written offer or via e-mail or text. No bid will be valid unless the

bidders number is included in any such offer.• There are to be three quality/price groups from each host farm.• All alpacas will have a reserve price posted.• All alpacas will have a scheduled “sale closed” time.• All alpacas will have a “Buy Now” price.• The “Buy Now” price will be only available until a posted scheduled time. Such time will be at least 2 hours prior to the “Sale

Closed” time. • If the Buy Now price is not taken by the scheduled time, the Pen Auction will run until the scheduled Sale Closed time.• At the scheduled Close the bidder making the highest offer will be the purchaser, provided that the reserve price has

been met.

EXAMPLE:a. Alpaca A is reserved at £3999, with a close time of 4:30.pm on Saturday. The “Buy Now” price is £4500, available until

2:30pm. Buyer X offers the “Buy Now” price of £4500 at 12:15pm and secures the purchase. Alpaca A is no longer available.b. Alpaca B is reserved at £4500, with a close time of 4:30.pm on Saturday. The “Buy Now” price is £5000, available until

2:30pm. Buyer X has bid £4900 at 2:25pm. The Buy Now time passes with no further offers until Buyer Z offers £5000 at 2:45pm. The “Buy Now” time having passed this offer does not secure the purchase; two other bids are made with Buyer Z securing the purchase with his last bid of £5600 made at 4:25pm.

c. Alpaca C is reserved at £4500, with a close time of 2:30.pm on Sunday. The “Buy Now” price is £5500, available until 12:30pm Sunday. Buyer Y offers the reserve price of £4500 at 10:30am on Sunday; no further offers are received by 2:30pm. Buyer Y secures the purchase with the reserve price of £4500.

Are you looking for rarity in your suri breeding programme? Then Moon Shadow is the girl for you! Moon Shadow grabs your attention immediately - not only because she is a rare colour (there are very few grey suris in the UK, let alone anywhere else in the world) but her stature and fleece are gorgeous.

Moon Shadow won Champion grey female at the Nationals this year and caught the eye of many a breeder. Her fleece is so well organised, displaying excellent lustre and wonderful density. Moon Shadow is a beautiful example of how far our coloured breeding programme has come. Moon Shadow is a maiden female and we are selling her inclusive of a breeding for 2016.

For many there is huge appeal in a grey Alpaca and Grey Goose should be no exception. Goose, as we refer to her, is a truly beautiful example of an outstanding grey female. It was with some reluctance that we decided to offer Goose for sale at the 2015 Classic and when you look at her pedigree you will easily understand our reticence.

Goose’s sire needs no introduction – Alpaca Stud Nyetimber. Nyetimber is without question the most highly decorated Grey male in Europe and his progeny are following suit. Nyetimber was the 2013 British Alpaca Futurity Huacaya herdsire champion which is testament to the potency of his genetics. Goose’s dam, Shaft’s Iratze, is a true black with a proven ability to throw black or grey. Of her 9 offspring 7 have been true black and 1 a grey. Iratze is from a pure black pedigree with names such as Arunvale Shaft’s Dream and Arunvale Denzel adding weight to her genetic worth. This line is testament to the commitment one of the most long standing breeders in the

UK, Duncan Jones of Jessamine Alpacas, whose herd we manage. Grey Goose cut 1.415kg of skirted saddle fleece at her 2015 shearing. Her most recent fleece

displayed an excellent staple length with a beautiful style and impressive density. Now pregnant to Snowmass Puna Sky, himself sire of the 2015 British Alpaca Futurity

champion grey, Grey Goose is one to watch.

Cointreau is the result of layering outstanding bloodlines: that of Bourbon on her Sire’s side, and Ishara as granddam on her Dam’s side. Bourbon on his 5th fleece was tested at 19.6 microns and his 7th fleece does not look any different. Bourbon passes his residual fineness gene on to his progeny and, along with the incredible density of Ishara, we produced this truly outstanding female!

If you are looking for an élite brown female to complement the best of brown breeding programme then look no further! Cointreau is an extremely impressive female. She has won Champion Brown female each time we have shown her, with the Judges being impressed with her density along with her fineness. At the Futurity she was compared to a Lamborghini! By no means are these her only traits: her fleece is absolutely uniform in colour, and not only carrying the fineness right the way across her body, but also far into her extremities. Cointreau has been covered by Bozedown Achilles and we expect an equally impressive cria from this pairing. Achilles’s 3rd crop of crias has arrived this season and they are exciting in both their colour uniformity as well as their beautiful, dense, well-organised fleeces.

In Prada the Alpaca Stud offer you a beautiful medium brown female with enviable lineage. This upstanding young Huacaya is sired by Alpaca Stud Pugilist whose genetics herald back to great names such as Quetchuan Frottle and Arunvale Leigh’s Inca Dream, not to mention Alpaca Stud Warrior who was himself highly decorated in the British show ring.

On her dam’s side the gene pool is all about depth. Prada’s dam Onida is a daughter of the renowned female Inca Haze. Haze was one of those rare females who make it to the dizzy heights of a breeding blue blood! Onida is the half-sister by dam of Alpaca Stud Chandon and Alpaca Stud Top Gun, both of whom are now working males at The Alpaca Stud. Both Chandon and Top Gun have had successful show careers but it is the work they are doing in reproducing the greatness of this line which is most exciting. Chandon has sired, arguably, the best cria of our 2015 drop. When you consider that Prada is now mated to Snowmass Roll of Honour the possibility of what is to come is tantalizing. This female will bring together some of the very best British bloodlines with

the crème de la crème of the Snowmass genetics.Prada sheared 1.575Kg of blanket at her 2015 shearing which we are sure you will agree is impressive

but more so in a darker colour who is none the less retaining an excellent degree of fineness. Her fleece displays good style and density.

Anything Goes catches your eye in the paddock every time, with her beautifully balanced frame and great presence. Her fleece is bright, fine with a cloud-like softness known to us as the ‘Tudor handle’. We can pick out Tudor progeny by the handle of their fleece alone: sublimely soft! Those genetics, crossed with Comet, have produced this élite combination.

Offered with a pregnancy from our state of the art Achilles, this girl offers a tremendous genetic package for any breeding programme.

Jewel is the showy girl of our offerings! She possesses that real ‘look at me quality’ of a born star! She is most definitely an exquisite gem in the fawn herd at The Alpaca Stud. So, it is with some reluctance that we offer her to you at this year’s Alpaca Classic. But offer her we do – and you would be crazy to pass up this opportunity! From the moment you first set eyes on this magnificent Alpaca you will note how true to type she is with her beautiful compact head and her frame which is absolute and correct. She carries an abundance of fleece which is soft handling, crimpy and dense. At her 2015 shearing her blanket weighed in at an impressive 1.46Kg.

Jewel is a daughter of Alpaca Stud Pugilist who is himself descended from great names such as Quetchuan Frottle and Arunvale Leigh’s Inca Dream, not to mention Alpaca Stud Warrior who was himself highly decorated in the British show ring. We present Jewel to you pregnant to Alpaca Stud Nyetimber, who we believe is a legend of the UK industry. As the most highly

decorated Grey male in the UK he further proved the potency of his genetics when awarded the 2013 British Alpaca Futurity Huacaya herdsire champion.

The complete package is a phrase often used when talking about Alpacas, sometimes wrongly but in relation to Fusions Magic and her cria Synergist’s Spell we stand behind the statement! In offering this combination of Dam and Daughter we afford you the opportunity to purchase the most coveted of our coloured suri genetics. Magic is a heavy cutting female who carries a beautiful regrowth fleece which still holds great style, good lustre and impressive density. Her sire, Fusion has been instrumental in our Suri colour programme and in 2011 was crowned Suri Herdsire of the year at the British Alpaca Futurity, no mean feat for a fawn Suri, and ample demonstration of his prepotency! Whilst not in the first flush of youth he still displays all those qualities we most seek in the Suri alpaca, a beautiful cool handle, lustre and density allied to tremendous conformation. Offered with a pregnancy to Phoenix Firedrake this is a magical three in one genetic powerhouse, two British Futurity Herdsire champions, plus the Synergist, not an opportunity

that will come about too often. Synergist’s Spell is a daughter of GLR The Synergist of Alpaca Stud. Synergist is one of our most consistent

suri herdsires. This male is putting sumptuous colour in to his progeny and Synergist’s spell is certainly no exception. Alpaca Stud Fusion daughters crossed to the Synergist are already wowing us which gives us every confidence Spell will also grow up to wow in herself, and in the progeny she produces!

LOT 10: BREEDERS SELECTION – ALPACA STUDINTRODUCTIONFour years in and we thought we should offer even more choice to Alpaca breeders. This year, and in keeping with Alpaca Classics policy of being innovative, The Alpaca Stud is offering the chance to choose from a small yet select group of young males. We only ever allow into our breeding programme a very small proportion of males, and all of this group are earmarked for future use. With black, white, fawn and grey Huacaya, and a stunning brown Suri making up the group, we are confident the colour choice alone will provoke much consideration, after all

the 2016 season is not that far away! Add to this the great pedigrees with Huacaya Wiracochas Dream, Golden Gun, Dovecote Jaquinto, Nyetimber and the Suri Alpaca Stud Phoenix and The Synergist and the prepotency of the individuals within this group is assured.

All males within this group are offered with a full breeding warranty and will be fully registered. We think that the photograph paints the picture, but look at the pedigrees on the Classic website and you will own the book.

PEN AUCTIONWith something for all tastes and budgets in this offering, we will, in the weeks preceding the Classic, be publishing details of some of those alpacas that are to be offered in the Pen Auction, all of which are female. Keep watching our Facebook page, and/or the website for

details; they may not appear for long, and some will remain a mystery until the event opens on the evening of Friday 4th September. In the meantime the text below offers a small insight into some of those alpacas you will see in this sale format.

...“has grown in to a beautiful breeding female who is perfectly correct, well balanced with good substance of bone and a wonderful head type with a very stylish fleece and good fibre coverage. A dense fleece, demonstrating good crimp and brightness, and very soft handling.”

“Rod in his short years with us has been instrumental in our breeding program; his dominant traits have been extreme fleece length, brightness and overall handle. The Rodrigo genetics layered with our Galaxy lines has proved to be a prepotent and impressive genetic formula. This led us to offer a truly powerful combination with a pregnancy to

Bozedown Comet II.”

...“who went on to win multiple broad ribbons. Her sire is the mighty Snowmass Royal Vision.

This male is a dynamo of elite genetics. Royal Vision epitomises what makes Snowmass

great. Royal Vision has a perfect phenotype, stunning fleece architecture, and outstanding

density uniformity and brightness”.

“All breeding programmes are a layering of genetics to enable an improvement on the next generation and this cria is proof that

using top quality studs make the difference!”

“This combination of genetics from Synergist and Gryffindor, going back to Phoenix, will undoubtedly produce something special. Like her sire, she has a heavy cutting fleece which is

both lustrous and dense. The fleece exhibits beautiful style and possesses a super soft handle.”

“She is a magnificent mid fawn Suri who is a shining example of the Suri type. With real presence, this well balanced young female carries considerable substance of bone. Her fleece is dense and lustrous with excellent lock style and uniformity. The handle is like nothing on earth – slick and indicative of the high degree of lustre.”
