. : : MethodologyDilit International House was one ofthe first schools to adopt a fully com-municative approach to the teachingof Italian, and the approach is beingup-dated all the time. Language is never presented out ofcontext; and grammar, phonology, lexisand all other features of actual languageuse in everyday situations are analysed.A wide variety of up-to-date authenticmaterial is used in class, thus givingthe students valuable informationabout modern-day Italian culture andsociety at the same time as develo-ping the students’ authentic linguisticand communicative skills. Amongst the principal techniques andprocedures employed in class are:communicative tasks, group work, anddramatisation. Our teachers, who have beenteaching in the school for an avera-ge of 10 years, have been selectedfrom special training courses, andthey are further required to take partevery month in teacher educationseminars.

. : : Courses GROUPAll levels are available, from absolu-te beginners to advanced. The minimum age is 16. The maximumnumber of students per class is 15.Students who already know someItalian can enrol at times other thancourse-starting dates. On arrival, students are tested andplaced in classes according to theirlevel and their particular needs.

INTENSIVE (15-20-30 hrs/week)Classes are held from Monday toFriday. New courses start every 4weeks throughout the year.Minimum attendance is 2 weeks.

15 hrs/week afternoons, 3 hours aday, from 2 to 52 weeks.

20 hrs/week mornings*, 4 hours aday, from 2 to 40 weeks.

30 hrs/week mornings and afternoons,6 hours a day, from 2 to 28weeks.

* At certain times of the year, for1 week out of 4, lessons may be held from2p.m. to 6p.m.

NON-INTENSIVE (6 hrs/week)Classes are held twice a week, mor-nings or afternoons, and last 3hours. Each course lasts 12 weeks. These courses are run all yearexcept July, August and September. Minimum attendance is 12 weeks.

COMBINEDStudents attend a group course in the mornings (4 hours/day) and indi-vidual tuition in the afternoons (2 hours/day). Particularly suitable for those who need Italian both for general andspecific purposes (dealing with specific topics in specific settingsand/or other particular aspects of the language).

INDIVIDUALParticularly suitable for businessand professional people and allthose who require tuition tailor-made to their individual needs.(Small groups of 2-4 students canalso be catered for).

INTENSIVE (15-30 hrs/week)Attendance is daily from Mondayto Friday and varies from 3 to 6hours a day. Minimum attendance is one week.

NON-INTENSIVE (3+ hrs/week)Attendance is a minimum of 3hours a week for a minimum of 30hours in all.

. : : Levels In common with most quality lan-guage providers in Europe,Dilit International House has setall its courses for all levelsagainst the descriptors of theCommon European Framework ofReference for Languages (CEF).This is a system of levels develo-ped under the auspices of theCouncil of Europe in order tobring uniformity to languagedescriptions and levels. Thisscale gives a short description ofwhat learners can normally do ateach of 6 levels (A1 to C2).Thanks to this system, languagecompetence can be assessed and

described in a manner which istransparent to all concerned (lear-ners, parents, teachers, schools,etc.).For more information please con-tact the school. ITALIAN HISTORY ANDCIVILISATIONThe political and social processthat, from the unification of Italytill today, has brought about theformation of modern Italy. Themain steps in the socio-economicand cultural evolution of Italiansociety are presented, using anapproach that goes beyond sim-ple chronology to include an in-depth analysis of the politics,customs, fashion, music and figu-rative arts.

DESIGN & ARCHITECTUREPart of the programme deals withArchitecture and Design. It servesas a general introduction to thesetwo subjects and has a doubleobjective: create a basis for anyfuture studies and widen the kno-wledge of Italian culture in one ofits basic dimensions. Architectureand Design are subjects whichhighlight the specialness of Romeas a melting pot of testimoniesfrom different historical periodsand diverse cultures.

HISTORY OF ARTA part of the programme dealswith the History of Italian Art. It isnot possible to separate theoreti-cal and historical aspects frommore dynamic aspects, in whichthe direct visit constitutes a fun-damental moment. Rome is anideal city from this point of view.Here it is possible to find concre-te testimonies from many epochs:from ancient times, with its eter-nal monuments, to the medieval,to the Renaissance, to theBaroque period.

BUSINESS ITALIANThe English language dominatesthe labour market and internatio-nal relations. Nevertheless thereis a constant increase in the num-ber of international operatorswho, in their relationships withItalian companies, feel the needto be conversant in Italian.The lessons will concentrate onall aspects of business Italian,both written and spoken. Amplespace will be given to businessterminology and to a review ofrelevant grammatical structuresinherent to communicative situa-tions in a business context.

Students are tested for language competence level when they apply(the test can be carried out on the phone if necessary). If their level isnot sufficient to enter the internship programme immediately they aregiven an estimate as to how much language study will be necessary toreach that level.

. : : Prerequisites Minimum age: 18 years. High school diploma or degree.Language Competence: B1 level of theCommon European Framework forLanguages (see table below).

This programme combines thestudy of the Italian language withunpaid work experience in anItalian company. The programmeoffers students an opportunity touse and improve their languageskills and at the same time comeinto direct contact with a workingenvironment which in many casesis peculiar to Italy.

Can understand with ease virtually everythingheard or read. Can summarise informationfrom different spoken and written sources,reconstructing arguments and accounts in acoherent presentation. Can express him/her-self spontaneously, very fluently and precisely,differentiating finer shades of meaning even inmore complex situations.

Can understand a wide range of demanding,longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning.Can express him/herself fluently and sponta-neously without much obvious searching forexpressions. Can use language flexibly andeffectively for social, academic and profession-al purposes. Can produce clear, well-struc-tured, detailed text on complex subjects, show-ing controlled use of organisational patterns,connectors and cohesive devices.

Third step If the application isaccepted student pays full fee (lan-guage course + internship). It's a mixture of language, art, cul-ture and the pleasure of spendingtime together to share and impro-ve one's knowledge of thoseaspects of Rome that make thiscity so unforgettable.

Apart from 40 hours of languagelessons in the morning in classesof mixed ages at the appropriatelevel, the programme includes thefollowing activities:

. : : Exam Preparation The non-Dilit International Houseexams shown in the levels chartare organised by three Italian uni-versities: Perugia, Siena, andRoma Tre.

The school will give students fulladvice on what exam to chooseand how to enrol.

Furthermore those students whowant to sit for one of these examsand need practice with specificexam procedures can attend the6-week-long Exam PreparationCourses.Classes are held twice a week for2 1/2 hours.

Specially suitable for people whohave very little time to devote tolearning Italian.Each lesson, three hours long,has a linguistic and\or communi-cative theme and is made up of 3parts.The first part, which takes place inclass, is devoted to the vocabula-ry, the grammar, the phonologyand the communicative rulesapplicable to a specific situation.In the second part of the lessonthe students put into practicewhat they have learnt. In real lifecontexts, they carry out pre-deter-mined tasks interacting withItalian people.The third part of the lesson isdevoted to tackling the difficultiesencountered.Each lesson is in itself a comple-te learning experience and as aconsequence it is possible to offerthe Italian [Out There!] courseeven for short periods, startingfrom a minimum of 3 days.

Historically Castelfusano was anold hunting estate of the Chigifamily. It is situated just 25 kmfrom the center of Rome and 1.3km from the Roman coast.

The name derives from themagnificent baroque castle, fre-scoed by Pietro Da Cortona in the1620’s, which lies in the midst of acenturies-old pinewood.Thirty-five hectares around thecastle are still privately owned bythe Chigi family and it is here thata member of the family decided tobuild a tourist village and cam-ping-site called Country ClubCastelfusano.

GROUPCourses are offered in July andAugust from absolute beginnersto high intermediate level.Students who already know someItalian can start any Monday.Classes are held from 9.00 a.m. to1.00 p.m. from Monday to Friday.

Fully aware that a satisfying studyholiday cannot only consist of thelanguage course, the school paysparticular attention to those servi-ces which can contribute tomaking the student’s stay as enjo-yable as possible.

. : : Spare-time Study A language laboratory and videobooths (DVD and VHS) are freelyavailable at all times between9.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m. Mondaysto Fridays for students who wantto study in their spare time.

Students can also watch Italianfilms selected from the school’sfilm library.

. : : Internet Internet booths are freely availa-ble to all students who wish to usethem from 9.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.Mondays to Fridays.

On arrival at the school studentsare automatically enrolled in thestudents’ club.

The club room, in the basement,is an ideal place to relax, makefriends and have fun.

There is a TV and piano availableand many of the organised socialactivities take place here.

. : : SeminarsEvery week, outside normal classtime, seminars (included in theenrolment fee) are held on the fol-lowing subjects:

• History

• History of Italian Art

• Regions and Towns in Italy

• Italian Cinema

• Italian Cooking

• Italian Wine

. : : Social Activities The school organises a full andvaried programme of social activi-ties for the students (e.g. films,excursions, concerts, operas, gui-ded tours, parties, etc...).

The aim is to ensure that studentshave every opportunity to practisethe language they are learningand at the same time makefriends and have fun.

The teaching staff run the activi-ties making sure that any langua-ge or other difficulties are takencare of.

A calendar of social events isgiven to each student on entry tothe school.

All activities except dinners,excursions, operas and concertsare included in the enrolment fee.

. : : AccommodationOn request the school can arran-ge whatever sort of accommoda-tion is desired: with host-families,in flats sharing with other stu-dents of the school, or in indepen-dent flats. These are all carefullyselected and monitored. Bed &Breakfast and hotel accommoda-tion can also be arranged.Fully aware of the importance tostudents of this service, thesecretaries do their utmost to seethat students’ expectations arecompletely satisfied, and theytake care of their well-being forthe complete duration of theirstay.The families and the flats areclassified in two categories:Standard and Standard Plus. Accommodation with host-fami-lies or in flats means sleeping insingle or double rooms andhaving free use of the bathroomand kitchen. Change of linen, and electricityand gas consumption are inclu-ded in the price. For an extra fee host-families willprovide breakfast or half-board.
