Ector County Independent School District operates with one central goal - a world class education for every child. Our mission statement promises ECISD will develop world ready, life-long learners, who discover their unique gifts, achieve personal success, and fuel their community by building unified, comprehensive community support and participation that fosters a standard of excellence.
To that end, ECISD places a tremendous emphasis on curriculum and instruction, and staff development. Giving our teachers the tools, they need to successfully teach our kids is a top priority.
Founded in 1921 ECISD now covers 906 square miles, utilizes 44 campuses to educate more than 35,000 students, and employs more than 4,000 people.
The student population breaks down as follows: • Hispanic 70.9%• Anglo 22.8%• African American 3.9%• Asian or Pacific Islander 0.8%• American Indian 0.4%• Hawaiian/Pacific Islander .2%• other 1%.
Secondary Schools Ector County Independent School District operates two 6-A high schools, Odessa High School which boasts the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program and is a National AVID Demonstration School, and Permian High School which offers a full array of Advanced Placement courses.
George H.W. Bush New Tech Odessa high school specializes in project-based learning with an emphasis on the use of technology and student-directed learning. NTO has gained recognition as a New Tech Network Demonstration School and an Apple Distinguished School.
ECISD is also home to two Early College High Schools which give students the chance to earn up to 60 hours of college credit by the time they graduate from high school. OCTECHS (Odessa Career & Technical Early College High School) and Odessa Collegiate Academy (formerly called Falcon ECHS) are located on the
campus of Odessa College. Through OCTECHS students can earn an associate degree in their selected area of study. All of the college courses are free to early college high school students. Advanced Technical Centers offer electives that let students embark on college- and career-focused education in areas such as welding, automotive technology, culinary arts, nursing and more.
For the fifth straight year ECISD is one of the Best Communities for Music Education, a prestigious distinction from the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation.
In 2016, ECISD launched PICK Education, an initiative bringing real world experiences into the classroom where students can contribute data to various fields of research and technology. In 2018, a science experiment designed by Falcon ECHS students launched to the International Space Station and was conducted by NASA astronauts through a PICK Education collaboration. One year later, students from Nimitz Middle School designed a project conducted at the ISS. PICK Education has also connected teachers and students across ECISD with real world research experiences, field explorations and presentations by world-renowned researchers with appearances on media outlets such as National Geographic, PBS and Discovery Channel. The Innovation Department and PICK Education have extended their list of partnerships with Tulane University School of Medicine, Stanford University, Southern Methodist University and The University of Texas to provide more real-world research opportunities for our students.
ECISD is also committed to AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination), a structured, college preparatory program that serves students who have the desire and determination to go to college but lack support. From 7th through 12th grades AVID is offered as an elective designed to provide support in rigorous curriculum while putting students on a college track. AVID strategies are used in elementary schools, too. Odessa College and UTPB also use AVID, establishing Ector County as a model community-wide AVID system.
Elementary Schools Of the twenty-five elementary schools, nine are magnet campuses. All elementary schools offer full-day kindergarten.
The magnet programs not only offer required academic courses but also a variety of life enriching specialty classes.
Austin Montessori - The Montessori Magnet School at Austin Elementary uses a unique, individually structured curriculum. Specially trained teachers promote the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of students in a carefully
prepared, multi-age learning environment. This program is designed to develop self-motivated, independent learners.
Cameron - The ability to demonstrate literacy in more than one language has become a priority in our society. The Elementary Magnet School at Cameron offers English, Spanish, French and German to all students as well as an International Studies component. Cameron’s goal is that each kindergarten student entering the program will become bi-literate and possess a strong foundation in a third language by the time they complete sixth grade.
Hays - The Hays Magnet Academy provides a rigorous academic curriculum that helps prepare its students for the 21st century global economy. The focus is academic excellence for all students with an emphasis on college readiness. Hays’ students utilize math and science labs that offer exciting and innovative strategies to allow hands-on, concrete learning of abstract concepts. The goal at Hays Magnet is to produce students who love learning at a rigorous level and who are ready for the challenges that await them.
Gale Pond Alamo - Students at Gale Pond/Alamo Leadership Academy have the opportunity to reach high academic goals while participating in a year-round educational calendar. These elementary students attend the same number of instructional days as those on the traditional calendar but may elect to attend five weeks of intersession instruction where they can participate in a variety of academic and innovative learning activities. Gale Pond/Alamo students also focus on practicing the habits of highly effective people as they shape our future community leaders.
Milam - The visual and performing arts program at the Elementary Magnet School at Milam provides students with a comprehensive study in the visual arts, dance, drama, choral, and instructional music in order to enhance an academic program that stresses excellence.
Reagan - Excellence in academic achievement, discipline, attendance, and citizenship forms the foundation of the Elementary Magnet School at Reagan. High expectations coupled with a strong support system and rigorous subject matter form the core of the learning process. This program is designed for students who work best in a structured environment.
Travis - The Elementary Magnet School at Travis gives students the opportunity to explore and enhance all academic and enrichment areas. Laboratory-centered inquiry and discovery methods are used in an in-depth study of math, science, and communications. Unique features of the communications component are the student-operated radio and television studios and the piano lab.
Zavala - Zavala Elementary Magnet School provides technology-rich, stimulating environments which actively engage students in solving engineering problems using project-based learning. Through investigation, understanding, and application of ideas from all curriculum areas children will become life-long learners.
Blackshear - Along with its core academics Blackshear Elementary offers an extended-day magnet program that focuses on health and wellness. Individual sports and fitness activities, healthy eating habits, and the study of global sports all contribute to the students’ ability to sustain regular, life-long physical activity as the foundation for a healthy, productive, fulfilling life. Tutoring for the core academic areas is also available during the magnet time.
The District can also accommodate pre-kindergarten students at Austin Montessori, Milam, Gale Pond/Alamo, Blanton, and Cameron elementary schools, as well as its two early education centers.
AVID ECISD is a proud supporter of AVID. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is a structured, college preparatory program that serves students who are in the middle; typically, the B/C students who have the desire and determination to go to college. At junior high and high school AVID is offered as an elective course designed to provide support for students in rigorous curriculum while putting them on a college track. In August 2009, the District began implementing AVID strategies in elementary schools, too.
Fine Arts The District’s Fine Arts programs are among the finest in Texas and maybe the nation. The music programs in ECISD have been perennial winners of Superior ratings at UIL marching and concert/sight-reading competitions, and have consistently been selected as Festival winners at many of the major music festivals across the U. S. Many of our junior high and high school music organizations have been selected for recognition by the Texas Music Educators Association for excellence in performance. The Art Department of ECISD boasts a stellar record of achievement, with many students chosen for awards in AP classes and other individual awards at the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) competition.
Athletics ECISD athletics are recognized far and wide for their accomplishments. Perhaps no high school program in the country is as well-known as the Permian High School Panthers football team which was immortalized in the best-selling book and movie “Friday Night Lights.” Football may be the most recognized but ECISD student-athletes have won District, Regional and State Championships in a wide
variety of sports. Each spring ECISD hosts the West Texas Relays, one of the state’s longest running track meets.
Facilities ECISD is also proud of its state-of-the-art facilities. In November 2012, the citizens of Ector County passed a $129.75 million bond which will build three new elementary schools and additions to Odessa High School and Permian High School. In 2001, an $89 million bond paved the way for 31 campuses to be renovated or completely rebuilt.
Community Support ECISD receives strong community support through several programs. The Education Foundation has awarded well over $1,000,000 for innovative teaching projects. The Foundation also teamed with Odessa College and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and to offering $200,000 in scholarships for graduates of Ector County high schools. The Partners in Education program provides businesses, agencies, and community organizations the opportunity to contribute time, money, and resources to enhance student success and achievement. Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) is a vehicle by which parents and community members can assist campus staff in day to day work with students. Since 1982 nearly 17,000 VIPS have volunteered more than 1.7 million hours with an estimated value of $24.9 million!
