General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)

What's next for Big Data?

Wire in the blood.

Organisations are advised to start taking steps to immunise themselves sooner rather than later…

Big Data has never really done itself too many favours but there are indications that Big Data may at last be building to a head…

Wireless mobile infrastructure can no longer be regarded as bolt-on afterthought. But why is it taking it so long?

GDPR: An ounce of prevention…

With General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) set to challenge the health of data repositories everywhere, organisations are advised to start taking steps to immunise themselves sooner rather than later…

So here’s a comparison you probably won’t read elsewhere: GDPR is a lot like another infamous four-letter acronym. MRSA.

No-one had even heard of if a few years ago, it sounds kind of innocuous, but it’s going to get everywhere, potentially impact everyone, ignoring it is dangerous, and moving forward it’s going to be critical to the health of businesses the world over.

Unsurprisingly in the circumstances, GDPR is getting plenty of publicity. However, in the unlikely event you thought it stood for G** D***ed Public Relations or something, let’s go over the key points again.

By far and away the largest and most all-encompassing shake-up of European data protection rules to date (and as its name suggests) the GDPR is concerned with the protection of personal information.

Comprised of upwards of 50 Articles – all of which have far-reaching implications relating to the use and storage of personal data – it’s all about protecting the rights the individual concerning when, how and even whether their personal information is stored and used, and who has access to it.

Which brings us to what seems like a good place to clear up one or two myths.

First, necessity. Given the increasingly digital nature of today’s information landscape, and despite sniping in certain quarters, such legislation is not just required but probably long overdue.

Second, applicability. Unless your business stores no electronic information whatsoever, pertaining to anyone, from almost anywhere (and that would make it pretty much unique), GDPR is going to affect you. Definitely.

Third, compliance. Which is both mandatory and critical. Potentially to the tune of millions of Euros in punitive fines.

Lastly, exemptions. Specifically exemptions pertaining to Brexit. And let’s be especially clear on this point. To all intents and purposes there are none. Even assuming it actually happens, Brexit will absolutely NOT, as some have supposed, let UK companies off the legislative hook. GDPR applies to non-member countries trading within the EU as well. In other words, come 2018, we’ll need to comply too.

(Remember also, that even if Article 50 should be invoked, it’s likely to be many years before the UK makes a full and final official withdrawal.)

Given GDPR’s evident breadth, complexity, and scope of influence, the Information Commissioners Office recommends formulating a compliance strategy as soon as possible, and this is sound advice. But where to even start?

There are, in fact, a number of immediate steps organisations can take to begin staving off potential issues, to identify where the key data resides, and to get a handle on what their obligations are as regards handling and managing it.

Let Insight help you prepare for this challenge. Talk to one of our experts today who can guide you to the best solutions and services to help your organisation through these new regulations. Call now on 0844 846 3333

STEP 1. What is ‘personal’ data exactly and do we have any?

In the context of the new laws ‘personal data’ is any data that relates to a ‘data subject’ (i.e. a person) who can be directly or indirectly identified on the basis of that data, including device identifiers, cookies, and IP addresses. The business therefore needs not only a clear knowledge and visibility of all such data under its control, but to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the potential risks to that data how these risks might be mitigated.

STEP 2. Does GDPR apply to me?

While we’ve already covered this (the answer being a resounding yes) it is worth mentioning some of the key terminology that impacts its applicability. In addition to ‘personal data’ for instance, this includes concepts such as ‘territorial scope’, ‘the right to erasure’ (aka the right to be forgotten), ‘data subject access requests’, ‘data protection impact assessment (DPIA)’, ‘data portability’ and ‘consent’. The glossary of terms on eugdpr.org provides definitions and more information.

STEP 3. Okay, so we have ‘personal data’, but where is it precisely?

As crucial to compliance as knowing what ‘personal data’ you have, will be knowing where it is. This will demand a quite granular analysis of the data stored in corporate repositories (on premise and in-cloud), on employees’ personal devices, even as hard copies in filing cabinets. Firms will also need details of personal data being stored by their suppliers, sub-contractors, and partners or by any other parties processing such data on their behalf.

Step 4. Get it mapped

Organisations should then draw up a data ‘map’ – a 360 degree view of every piece of physical and digital information across the enterprise – which means they can locate, assess and monitor any item of personal data quickly and easily.

Step 5. Classify and understand it.

Now you know where it is, but what are you allowed to do with it? How long can you keep it? Keeping retention policies up to date so that they properly reflect your legal, regulatory and contractual obligations is essential. As is destroying personal data, when required to do so, in an appropriate manner.

STEP 6. Promote awareness and stay awake.

From employees to contractors to suppliers, the whole business needs to be made and kept aware of its obligations. Retention policies need to be kept fluid, dynamic, and responsive, and to be seen to be.

Above all though, get on top of it now.

Four-letter acronyms are quite bad enough.

Don’t let GDPR become a four-letter word.

Unify your Wired and Wireless NetworksWhat are Cisco Catalyst 3850 Switches?Cisco Catalyst 3850 Series switches are the industry’s first Gigabit Ethernet switches to integrate wired and wireless LAN networking and management capabilities in a single platform. This integration, combined with Cisco Identity Services Engine and Cisco Prime Infrastructure, forms the foundation of Cisco Unified Access. Cisco Unified Access is the ability to set and enforce consistent management policies across both LAN and WLAN network domains from a single system. Cisco sums up these Cisco Unified Access capabilities using the slogan, “One Policy. One Management. One Network.”

The Cisco Catalyst 3850 switch family includes both gigabit access switches and new gigabit Small-Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) fibre switches. The fibre switches are suited to aggregation and fibre-to-the-desktop applications. Both access and fibre switches run the same software, with the same features, and the same Cisco Unified Access management platform. They are fully stackable together for up to 480 Gbps of bandwidth.

Best-in-Class Stackable Access SwitchThe Cisco Catalyst 3850 switch currently offers superior 480 Gbps stacking bandwidth to meet network demand, including gigabit desktop and 802.11ac wireless. The switch delivers advanced capabilities such as a high-performance 24 and 48 port Gigabit Ethernet (GE) switch, 480 GB stacking, Power over Ethernet Plus, StackPower, and Flexible NetFlow on all ports. In addition, Catalyst 3850 Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) fiber switch models are now available that support both stacked and standalone aggregation. This provides easier management and feature consistency.

Converged Wired and Wireless Access

The Cisco Catalyst 3850 switch brings Cisco IOS excellence to wireless by extending wired infrastructure features, resiliency, granular QoS, and scalability. It provides built-in wireless controller capabilities with 40 G wireless throughput, support for 50 access points and 2000 wireless clients per switch or stack, and support for 802.11ac.

What primary problems do the Catalyst 3850 Switches solve?

They reduce the management complexity and cost of LAN operations. Instead of running two parallel networks (wired and wireless), you can now run just one.

They increase your productivity and business efficiency. The Cisco Catalyst 3850 switches offer robust and resilient wired and wireless networking to meet your business needs, including gigabit desktop connections and 802.11ac wireless communications.

They future-proof your switch investments and introduce software-defined networking (SDN) capabilities beyond the data centre. They achieve this through the Cisco Unified Access Data Plane (UADP) ASIC, which also allows the switches to evolve to support new protocols as they emerge.

Dogged with growing pains and largely flattering to deceive through its formative years, there are indications that Big Data may at last be building to a head…

Big Data has never really done itself too many favours has it?

Least of all by giving itself a big build up by calling itself something like Big Data.

Big Data. It just sounds well, Big doesn’t it? But like a great many ‘world-changing’ technology ideas before it, the truth is that while it has promised much, it has so far delivered relatively little in terms of real and measureable results – at least seen in the context of the initial hype.

In understanding why, it is useful to look at it, says one commentator, in terms of architecture. Though civil architecture as opposed to the data variety:

“Louis Sullivan, a famed architect of early skyscrapers, is generally thought about as someone who managed to design buildings in both an innovative and practical way.

“Credited with the statement ‘form ever follows function’, he used this mantra as a guiding principle, and it helped him create buildings that catered both to aesthetics and practicalities such as how space would be utilised and the services that it would need to deliver to the people using it. As a result, many of his creations have stood the test of time and remain in use today. Indeed, many are considered treasures of architectural practice.”

“But imagine a building of which the opposite was true. One that, having been first unveiled, receives all kinds of construction industry accolades for reflecting say, the style of the era, and becomes celebrated for its boldness and artistic merit.”

Big Data: The House that Lack Built?

“People’s high opinions of this building would soon change to disappointment, frustration and annoyance if they discovered that it couldn’t deliver on basic needs like power, heat, light, water, security, easy access to key areas and facilities; elevator services to the higher floors.”

And unfortunately, it seems, such a situation has too often been the case when it’s come to early attempts at Big Data projects. Too many apparently having been built not on Sullivan’s premise of form following function, but with function following form.

In short, Big Data wasn’t quite so big yet after all. It had some growing up to do.

The core of the problem tended to be over-excited vendors of course. Specifically their assumptions that their big, beautifully constructed data structures, so elegantly pulled together and built from sources across the business, would yield exciting, new, previously impossible insights by default.

Only they didn’t.

In fact they quickly turned out to be little more than facades (in the kindest possible sense). Why? Because they were too often designed using the old enterprise data warehouse philosophy of “if you build it they will come” and because, as a result, they incorporated little in the way of solid functionality.

There was too much data. Too much scope. Too many possibilities.

Alternatively, a modern, artistic, technically elegant solution that doesn’t pay sufficient heed to functionality may be pretty to look at, but it is of no practical use.

Instead, proper consideration, insight and collaboration are required.

What sources of data are needed in order to best tackle and solve specific business issues? What datasets are most pertinent and why? What analytical techniques are most appropriate? What format should the results be delivered in? Such hypotheses need to be built, tested, applied and honed incrementally.

The good thing is that, with initiatives such as digital transformation now driving their thinking, businesses may now be in a better place, and possessed of the kind of more contemplative mindset, that will allow such strategic planning to happen.

Which leads us to a prediction.

The next 12 months are going to be a pivotal time for Big Data. A period in which it will start to come full circle as organisations begin to revisit their data lakes and Big Data repositories and take a fresh look at the kind of pain points such facilities can help them remedy.

In some instances, especially ones in which the data and information that’s needed can’t be clearly defined or easily delivered, this is likely to result in Big Data projects being rethought or shelved or possibly killed off altogether.

In others however, Big Data should really start to come into its own, with datasets being selected on the basis of the measureable, immediate value they can provide and their capacity to drive genuine business impact.

And it’s at this point that we’ll finally be able to add the third and arguably most critical element into the form/function equation. Fit.

....while it has promised much, it has so far delivered relatively little....

IT INFRASTRUCTURE BUYERS GUIDE20

If there’s one universal truth in this business (and there aren’t many), it’s that times, technologies and power bases inevitably change. And that that never changes.

Hardly what you might call an original or world-shattering revelation we know, but an important one nevertheless.

Take Apple. Once quite rightly seen as one of the tech market’s great innovators, it is now regarded by many commentators as a follower rather than a leader in many respects. A company that is becoming what it beheld. Who would have thought?

Even removing the head-phone jack from the iPhone 7 – a move that would once have been seen as a real curve-ball – doesn’t seem that radical when you really stop and think about it. Not with the whole world going firmly in one direction: wireless.

Next to Apple however – whatever its agenda – one species of business seems to have been conspicuously, stubbornly

and almost willfully slow on the wireless uptake. The Enterprise. A creature which remains resolutely ‘wired’ in its outlook.

While it’s true that most offices these days do offer Wi-Fi, it is often still held back for the use of senior management and visitors only. And even where it is available for all, connections are, typically, sketchy at best.

Such reluctance isn’t a huge surprise either of course. There are plenty of good reasons why enterprises should want to stick to being wired stalwarts. Greater reliability, security, speed, and at a lower cost. What’s not to like?

Another of the wired network’s great advantages, and one that seems particularly relevant in today’s increasingly insecure mobile world, is the control it provides. If a physical connection is needed to access the corporate network, the business can stay in full control of who and what gets online.

Wire also adds the further security benefit of keeping unauthorised visitors off the network while ensuring the plumbing isn’t overloaded with non-critical traffic.

Need to move a lot of data around? The wired network is the most prudent, least costly way to go there too.

But there are, of course, myriad reasons to go wireless as well.

Its huge flexibility and scalability for example. Increase your headcount in a purely wired context and each new employee or contractor will need a physical connection at their desk, each of which in turn will need to be set up and configured manually.

Not so with a wireless infrastructure.

uk.insight.com • 0844 846 3333

The enterprise remains a determinedly ‘wired’ environment and wireless mobile infrastructure can no longer be regarded as bolt-on afterthought. But there’s a long way to go before latter replaces former…

Wire in the Blood?

Page 21: IT Infrastructure - uk. · PDF fileOur guide to your IT essentials this spring General Data Protection ... Four-letter acronyms are quite bad ... Cisco Unified Access is the ability

21

Then comes the question of dramatically changing device and usage profiles.

The well-publicised explosion in mobile device usage for example. Going back to Apple for a moment, it alone has shipped north of 100 million tablets since that technology’s renaissance in 2010. Many workers are now accustomed to using such devices in the office, with trends like consumerisation and BYOD making headlines aplenty as a consequence.

The employees in question (many of them much-vaunted and fickle millennials) simply expect to be able to access to corporate networks via these devices, and that means providing wireless access.

Eradicating the unsightly and costly cabling that habitually runs around an office, wireless networking is also neater, and allows network access to be extended beyond the physical confines of the office.

And yet at this point the needle swings back the other way once again.

While empowering employees to utilise their own devices in the work environment, to connect to the corporate network, and to move around the campus at will, brings obvious productivity benefits, it also causes huge headaches. The very openness of wireless means that it gives attackers another potential route into the business and means that elements like authentication, intrusion detection, prevention, reporting

and security event management (SEM) have to be factored in.

And so the argument goes on. And on.

All in all, it’s a real case of push-me, pull-you. But which to opt for and run with? Wired or wireless? Wireless or wired?

In common with the answer to our introductory question, the response is hardly an original one.

Because the answer of course, is Both.

Which in turn is because there remain many pros and cons for both the wired and the wireless enterprise.

Yes wired networking can be massively constraining, but it continues to make a great deal of operational and financial sense, and the fact is that wireless taking over as the norm is still quite some way off. Also, there is simply too much legacy infrastructure in situ to even think about some kind of rip and replace in most cases.

As such, a combination of wired and wireless remains the way forward. At least for the time being. The two managed in tandem so that common policies can be run across both, driving twin benefits and twin savings.

Yes, times, technologies and power bases do indeed inevitably change.

Some changes clearly come about faster than others, however.

IT INFRASTRUCTURE BUYERS GUIDE22

Hyper-Convergence Brings ResolutionConvergence solves some of these problems by bringing compute, management, and storage closer together and providing common software elements. But it isn’t a complete solution. Separate systems, workflows, and management platforms still exist, and provisioning and operational challenges remain.

Hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) takes it to the next level by physically converging compute, management, and storage onto a single industry-standard x86 server, forming a seamless, software-defined environment.

How Does This Evolution in Infrastructure Move Your Business Forward? Let’s take a look at five practical benefits of HCI.

Traditional infrastructure needs to evolve. Here’s why:

The silo effect leads to complication and cost. Silos created by storage and networking lack optimisation, which leads to overprovisioning and higher costs. They’re also complicated to manage, requiring specialised skill sets that put a strain on resources.

It doesn’t enable full automation. Legacy infrastructure requires tedious, labour-intensive tasks that rack up high operational costs and increase the risk of manual error.

Silos plus a lack of automation equal delays. Silos along with inadequate automation make deploying resources a lengthy process that takes weeks or days. Not surprisingly, most business users are frustrated by lag times in service delivery.

5

Over the past few years, virtualisation has swept through the data center, resulting in greater flexibility and speed over legacy systems. But in many cases, virtualisation benefited only one layer, leaving much of the data centre still struggling to keep up with the pace of modern business.

1. Decrease Risk and Eliminate Management Complexity The right HCI solution does not require new management tools or training. This eliminates dependence on “tribal knowledge,” which is hard to capture and propagate across teams. It should also provide a straightforward infrastructure that is both easy to learn and allows you to leverage existing infrastructure and vendors. Simplicity is key.

2. Cut IT Spend Without the Need to Compromise By selecting the right HCI solution, you can achieve both high quality and cost savings. By lowering your TCO, you can repurpose budget for new, innovative projects, and get more projects approved faster due to smaller upfront costs.

3. Accelerate Productivity and Business Satisfaction

The best HCI solutions offer kernel-embedded storage to optimise the I/O path for high performance and high availability, meeting the needs of every end user.

4. Adapt Quickly in a Rapidly Changing Business EnvironmentThe right HCI solution enables elastic, granular, and non-disruptive scaling, and lets you deliver applications and infrastructure faster. It also gives you maximum flexibility to choose the hardware, software, licensing, and support that meet the needs of your business.

5. Future-Proof Your IT Infrastructure Today’s application-centric, data-driven era requires the support of a modern infrastructure. As technology continues to evolve, HCI allows you to keep up with changing demands from mobile, cloud, and developer environments.

Conclusion: The Time Is Now For Data Centre Transformation

HCI can eliminate complexity, improve productivity, and reduce expenses, while limiting your risk and preparing your infrastructure for the future. So why wait?

VMware offers the lowest-cost and highest-performing next-generation HCI solutions through proven VMware Hyper-Converged Software. STEP 1: PROTECTProtect valuable IT assets from power issues and ensure business continuity. Having the right UPS in place to protect IT assets against power issues and a business from unexpected downtime is the first step.

STEP 2: DISTRIBUTEImprove power distribution to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs. Power distribution takes care that the power from the UPS is distributed between IT appliances you have in a rack. The next generation of Eaton advanced rack PDUs (ePDU G3) incorporate monitoring and management capabilities.

STEP 3: ORGANISEOrganise IT equipment in an IT rack reliably and efficiently and reduce cooling costs. Racks and enclosures are among the first pieces of equipment deployed in a data centre or server room to house IT appliances properly and efficiently.

STEP 4: MANAGEIntegrate power management infrastructure with a virtual environment and manage it all through a single pane of glass. With power management software in place, clear visibility across entire power ecosystem is available to the user. And with intelligent power management software, integrating power management infrastructure with a virtual environment can be managed through a single pane of glass.

STEP 5: MAINTAINMaintain power devices properly to extend the life and achieve a greater peace of mind. An effective preventative maintenance strategy can be one of the most cost effective measures to be taken in a data centre. Eaton offers an extensive range of Distributed Services for new and running power devices.

Modern businesses need a better response to ever-changing market dynamics and competitive pressures. This need is shaping computing infrastructure strategies and set higher requirements to IT, asking for improved business continuity, lower costs and enhanced operational efficiency. But even the most advanced computing infrastructures can't cope when power fails. Optimise power management of the IT architecture in 5 steps to fully reap it's benefits and avoid business continuity risks.
