ACCOUNT PROFILING - DEFINING TARGET SEGMENTS
Blue Tortoise provides various levels of support to help clients define the clusters or
segments of data to use in their marketing campaigns.
For some clients, this support is for individual campaigns. For others, we help to construct
data strategy plans that support their longer-term engagement with the target market.
If a client does not have a definite view of the target segments to be used in the
campaigns, we can help to establish the optimal segments to target. We can take the
client’s existing data, and use statistical techniques such as CHAID or Latent Class Analysis
to find the segment definitions that correlate to, for example, the highest margin or
highest revenue customers.
If a client already has a set of segments they are targeting, we can help them to create
real-world definitions of the segments to order data from third-party data vendors.
We construct a set of parameters that we use for the best-of-breed data providers and
map the client’s segment definitions onto terms used by the providers, including:
• Geography
• Industry sector
• Size - annual revenue, employee numbers at the company or at the site
We then work with the data provider to communicate the number of organisations in
each segment, and potentially refine the segment definitions based on these numbers.
Often, our clients have lists of organisations that need to be excluded for various reasons.
We will work with the data providers to make sure that these are accounted for.

discerning about their data purchases, and increase the return on investment from
