Course Overview
Over last five decades, information technology has transformed businesses in all sectors of economy. IT
has allowed firms to build a global reach, bring new products and services to the market, and makeinternal processes and decision making more efficient. Internally, IT has allowed firms to redefine
business processes and management structure; organizations are moving from traditional hierarchical
structures to networked organizations. In our decision making we are improving effectiveness and
efficacy of our decision processes by deploying decision support systems and business analytics. On a
personal level we are always connected and carry our work with us all the time whether we are
commuting or on a vacation. We are using more and more of social media to manage our interactions
with people around us.
This course will focus on issues and challenges that come up in deploying and managing information
systems resources in transnational firms. Some of these issues are addressed at a strategic level (e.g.
adoption of new technologies, business design through IT, business process reengineering, IT
outsourcing) while others are addressed within information systems group (software development,
capacity planning, and end user services.) We will discuss approaches are commonly used (or have been
suggested) for addressing these issues. We will take a business rather than a technical perspective in
discussing these issues.
Topics covered will include IT and Competitive Advantage, IT and Globalization, IT Led Organizational
Changes, IT Governance, IT Infrastructure Planning and Management, IT Project Management, Quality in
IT Products and Services, Outsourcing IT Functions, Cloud Computing, Use of Social Software.
The course will make heavy use of readings and case studies to explore information management in
global firms. A number of readings for the course are drawn from business magazines like The
Economist, CIO, and InformationWeek.

Additional readings and cases will be distributed in the class.
Course Conduct
The course is a mix of lectures, case study discussions, presentations by guest speakers, and discussion of
current events in IT applications and IT management.
We will use four cases that highlight issues in IT management. Each class member is expected to read
the case and prepare for a case discussion on the case.
Each class member is required to submit written case summaries for four cases that we will discuss in
the class. The summary is due at the beginning of the class in which the case will be discussed. I will
usually provide a list of questions that frame some of important issues addressed in the case. However, I
will encourage you to address other issues that you find interesting.
