It gives me great pleasure to invite you to attend the 2014 International Congress of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine (ICPaLM) & 48th Malaysia-Singapore Congress of Medicine. This is the first such meeting, jointly organised by the College of Pathologists and Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, with the participation of World Association of Societies of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (WASPaLM). This meeting is to be held in Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, from 26th until 28th August 2014.

The theme for this meeting will be “Personalised Diagnostics: From Bench to Bedside” in response to the increasing awareness of the importance of personalised care in modern medicine and it is intended to cater for all pathologists, clinicians, trainee medical and scientific officers who are interested to update themselves in this field.

Your participation in this meeting will contribute to the continuous medical education in this part of the world, and it is hoped that you will reap many benefits from the plentiful and variety scientific programme thoroughly lined up for this meeting. We have also invited a faculty of many excellent speakers from all over the world to share their rich experiences and bountiful knowledge with you.

Apart from the scientific programme, we also hope that you will take this opportunity to go sight-seeing in the city of Kuala Lumpur, or even extend your stay to visit other parts of Malaysia and discover the many colourful cultural and geographical diversities it has to offer.

We look forward to meeting you in Kuala Lumpur then!

Best regards,

Dr Arni Talib Organising Chairperson

Welcome Message from Organising Chairperson

Welcome Message from the President, CPathAMM

First and foremost, congratulations to the Organising Committee of the 2014 International Congress of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine led by Dr Arni Talib for realising this highly anticipated event. This conference is special to all of us in the College as this is held in conjunction with the 48th Malaysia-Singapore Congress of Medicine, of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, for the first time and with the participation of the World Association of Societies of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (WASPaLM). It is an opportunity for pathologists and clinicians from Malaysia

and Singapore to meet pathologists from all over the world.

The theme of this Congress is “Personalised Diagnostics: From Bench to Bedside”. This is an emerging issue with a common interest within the medical profession. This conference provides a platform for discussion from scientific developments to clinical applications, through our invited speakers who are experts of the respective field. The conference is held at the right time to capture the significant progress made in the formulations of personalised diagnostics and related issues across the major disciplines of pathology. Medicine is pathology; the issues covered will be of relevance and interest to every clinician.

Last, but not the least, it gives me great pleasure to warmly welcome you to this Congress, held in tropical Kuala Lumpur. Meanwhile, do spend some time to explore and enjoy beautiful Malaysia!

Thank you.

Emeritus Professor Dr Soon-Keng Cheong President, College of Pathologists Academy of Medicine of Malaysia

Welcome Message from the President of WASPaLM

I am delighted to welcome all delegates, national and international, to the 2014 International Congress of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, hosted by the College of Pathologists, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia (CPathAMM). The World Association of Societies of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (WASPaLM), of which CPathAMM is an active and valuable member, is honoured to participate in this Congress. This event is of particular pride to me, as I welcome you, not only as WASPaLM President, but as a Malaysian to my beloved homeland.

As a global network, the roles and strengths of WASPaLM are inexorably intertwined with the aspirations of its constituent societies. WASPaLM serves as a facilitator of continual discussion and call for action on global issues among its constituent members, in coordinating the evolution of the profession, in promoting the future of pathology, and in being the voice of pathology in global policy-making bodies.

The practice of medicine today has evolved into the era of “personalised medicine” where targeted therapy is able to achieve more effective results with less side effects. In “personalised medicine,” the laboratory plays crucial roles in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease, and more specifically, in determining the pathological parameters on which stratification for therapy is based. The theme of this Congress: “Personalised Diagnostics: From Bench to Bedside” emphasizes yet another important contribution of pathology and laboratory medicine, that of exploring new testing parameters and improving on their relevance to patient care. The path from bench to bedside is a long and costly one; more so, it should not lose its focus. It is particularly apt that this Congress is held jointly with the 48th Malaysia-Singapore Congress of Medicine, as it provides a valuable forum for understanding of perspectives and needs in designing change for progress.

I must congratulate the CPathAMM for organising this outstanding programme. I am sure you will find it a stimulus for further collaboration in our common goal for better patient care. May you also enjoy beautiful Malaysia!

With warm regards,

Professor Datuk Dr Lai-Meng Looi President, World Association of Societies of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
