+ Introduction
Unit Question: How can we make our campus belongs to us?
AOI: Environment
How does the environment effect our learning?
SWA community is our client
+Why the AOI is environment?
Designing the furniture is related to our environment, and the designer should consider how the furniture changes the environment of the surroundings. The color or shape of the furniture will effect the environment and gives people different feelings or mood. The conclusion is the furniture is related to environment, so the Area of Interaction is environment.
+How does the environment effect our learning?
Environment is one of the most important thing for learning, the clean environment gives people a good mood and makes students more focus on the teacher. An unclean or not well design environment makes the students harder to focus and make them feel like they are locked in the tower.

The Idea I like about this chair is that the chair gives me a soft feelings and I really like the way of the design.
+Pictures of the SWA Campus
The shape of both the chair And the table are very boring And they don’t have much new ideas about putting art into the design.
+
What I don’t like the locker is the color of the locker is always the same and looks boring because they all in the square shaped.
+ The chairs below looks ugly and they are not even special and too Common to find.

+Design Brief
When you walk into the Da Vinci Building the first thing come to your eyes are the gigantic modern spaceship, but when you walk closer it turns out to be a super cool chair. How cool is that! I would like to design a big spaceship shaped chair with many uses. When I first think of Da Vinci I think of something technology, and my chair will be looking modern and cool. I am going to design a gigantic chair with woods and metal.
My chair will not only be a chair, I will try to combine with bookshelves. You will be amazing of the shape of the chair, and the uses of the chair. I am planning the chair for about 17 seats. The chair is design for everyone and I am planning to put the chair in the lobby of the Da Vinci Building. I am going to use the chair to show how amazing single shape can create.
+ Material Study Material 1
The material that I am going to use:
1. Wood
Material Red Oak Wood STRENGTH Oak is a hard material with great
strength. ELASTICITY (bend) 100-130MPa
PLASTICITY: Difficult to cut or shaped. DUCTILITY Low
TENSILE STRENGTH: 0-163 MPa MALLEABILITY Low
+ Material Study Material 1
TOUGHNESS (Compressive strength):
47 - 61.2 MPa
HARDNESS Hard
CONDUCTIVITY: Poor
Others Oak is a very expensive material

Materials Mahogany STRENGTH Strong
ELASTICITY (bend) 36-126MPa PLASTICITY: Easy to cut DUCTILITY Low
TENSILE STRENGTH: 32.5-101MPa MALLEABILITY Low
TOUGHNESS (Compressive strength)
36-58.5MPa
HARDNESS Hard

CONDUCTIVITY: Low

Decide which wood am I going to use?
I am going to use Mahogany because Mahogany has medium compressive strength, medium tensile strength, and medium ELASTICITY. The main reason of choosing Mahogany is the dark red color is more match for my furniture and it’s also cheaper than Red Oak.
+IT Specification
Title Specific and why? Testing Materials The materials that I am
going to use are Mahogany wood and canvas. Wood is a natural material and it is environmental friendly, and Canvas is also environmental friendly.
Which material is the strongest and most environmental friendly? Use more natural materials.
Size With in 2000mm*2000mm*2000mm
Which size is better for fitting the building? Find out the ceiling height of the building.
+Specification
Function For sitting and decorating
Is sitting on the chair comfortable? Test by letting someone sit on the chair.
Safety No sharp angles safe for children
How to make my furniture safety for children? Testing and design a soft part for the furniture.
Aesthetics The shape of my furniture will be looks ancient and mysteries, and you can sit on it!
How can I make my furniture looks special? Finding the images of the Viking ship and try to make connection with the furniture.
+Specification
Time The real furniture take maybe 3 to 4 month to make, because I am going to add lights and small table combine with the ship shaped chair.
How can I limit the making time? Think about how can we limit the time of making the product. Maybe by making more companies work together with each other.
Purpose Sitting, reading, and decorating.
How can I make my furniture more useful? Finding the images of chair, table and some art creation, and then tries to combine them together to have multiuse.
+Specification
Cost I think my furniture will cost a lot and I will try to limit the price below US 100 dollars. My budget to make the product will be US100.
How can I limit the budget in less then 100 dollars? Did I stay in budget or did I go over budget?
Target Audience Children, teachers and parents… and even everyone.
What is my target audience? Try to make everyone can use.
+Specification
Durability The wood and the canvas is strong, so the durability will be pretty good.
Was the material strong enough for the product? How can I make my durability better? Try to make the wood dry then this will increase the durability.
+Design Summary
When I finish the whole design circle I am very proud of myself when I design the finial design. I pretty like the chair I design and I had developed from two design and then combine each other to one final design. I am proud of myself and I what I did and I am glad to learn new things, like Google Sketch up and the design circle.
+Evaluation Reflection
In this design, I plan to make a mixture of the Design 6 and design 3. Design 3 is a chair which is build by simple shapes and Design 6 is the idea of Viking ship. When I develop both of the sketches I feel like it’s better to build a spaceship rather than a Viking ship. The hardest thing I had experienced is to make the Final Sketch in 3D, and after spending about 3 hours I overcome the challenge and that final design also made me proud.
+How the design going to to affect the environment?
My design has a strong affect on the environment and it’s not only a chair, it is also an awesome art creation. It’s also a modern space ship and its colorful color will gives other people a good mood and its complex shape can be use for art class for being the object for art class students to sketch. The chair is for everyone and the shape will amaze many people. The chair also shows the beauty of the combination of simple shapes.
