InitialeffortsonmaintainingacurrentclassroomITdatabaseshouldfocuson110classroomsthoughinthelongterm,theuniversityadministrationshouldexploreaconsolidatedreportingsystemforallclassrooms.DoITshoulddevelopadynamicdatabaseforusebyclassroomtechnologysupportstaffinmaintainingup-to-datetechnologyinventoriesandspacetechnicalcapabilities.ThroughAPI’s(ApplicationProgrammingInterfaces),theinformationshouldbesharedwithothersystems(particularly25Live)usedbyfacultytosearchforavailabilityandcapabilitiesoflearningspaces.TheRegistrarshouldupdateitslistofavailabletechnologies. INVESTIGATION METHODS/DATA/CONCLUSIONS Inourinitialmeeting,wenotedthatcomputersinclassroomsarenottheresponsibilityoftheClassroomEnhancementandSchedulingCommittee(CESC);computersareoftennotmaintainedandhaveunevensupport.Wehavenosystematicmethodforprovidinglaptops/computeraccesstoallinstructorssothatthecurrent110classroompolicyworkseffectivelyandsecurely.Wecontactedseveralcollege/schoolITdirectorstounderstandhowtheymaintaincomputers(andAVequipment)inboth110classroomsandclassroomsundertheirdirectcontrol.Responsesvaried;somecollegesdonotprovidecomputersintheirclassrooms,whileothersmaintaincomputersindedicatedlabs,orprovidecomputersinparticularclassrooms.Whenexternalunitsreserveclassroomsincollegesthatdonotprovidecomputers,issuescanarise.ThereisastrongsentimentforDoITtoassumeresponsibilityforcomputersin110classrooms.Currently,theofficialuniversitypositionappearstobethatcomputersarenotprovidedin110classrooms,sothatunitsorindividualinstructorsareresponsibleforcomputers.Thiscanactuallyincreasedemandfordesktopstoresolvethelackofresourcestoprovideallinstructors,includingTFAC,withlaptops.Inaddition,theneedforinstructorstoprovidecomputingfor110classroomscreatesasecurityriskfortheuniversity. RECOMMENDATIONS/ACTIONS Theuniversityshouldprovidefixedcomputersforall110classroomssupportedbyDoITaspartoftheirstandardizedpackageoftechnologyenhancements;thiswouldresolvejurisdictionalissuesandimprovesecurity.Iffixedcomputersareprovided,theuniversity

INVESTIGATION METHODS/DATA/CONCLUSIONS Responsibilityforrepairsisveryuncleartofaculty.After-hourssupportiscritical,butunavailable.Wecontactedcollege/schoolITdirectorstounderstandhowtheyprovidesupport.Ingeneral,theytrytoprovide“at-the-elbow”supportforAV,butoftenhavetocontactDoITtoresolveproblems.After-hoursupportforclassroomsisminimal,thoughhelpwithotherITproblemsisoftenavailableandresolvedoutsidethenormalclassroomschedule. RECOMMENDATIONS/ACTIONS PlacardswithAVandITsupportcontactinfoshouldbeplacedinclassroomsandmaintained.DoITshouldprovide24-houron-linesupportforthelargenumberofclassestaughtintheeveningsandonweekendsthroughtheuseofstudentemployees.Evening/flexhoursfortechnicalsupportstaffwouldallowadditionaltimetoresolveissuesinavailablelearningspaceswithoutinterruptionoranegativeimpactonclassschedules. University Technology Services (UTS) currently maintains three (3) levels of classroom audiovisual enhancements based on the feedback provided by faculty representatives, and the approval of the Provost’s Classroom Enhancement and Scheduling Committee (CESC.) Level 2 – Standard Enhanced Classroom make up roughly 90% of all general purpose (110) classrooms. All changes in standards and implementation schedules are coordinated through the CESC.

Level 1 - Basic Content Sharing Classroom

LeeHallman,ourdesktopsupportspecialist,managesPCandMaccomputersininstructorpodiums.Hemanagesabout60suchcomputersandthelistkeepsgrowing.VariousotherdepartmentswiththeirownITmanager,suchasMath,Psychology,andChemistryhavesimilarcomputersetupsbutaremanagedlocally.Ineveryscenario,webindthecomputertothenetworkdomainsothatanyoneatUSCcanlogin.Wetypicallydonotbuynewcomputersforinstructorstations,butinsteadusetrickle-downsfromupdatedcomputerlabs.ThebasicsoftwareconfigurationincludesOfficeSuite,mediaplayers,variousbrowsers(Edge,FirefoxChrome)andfreestatpackages.Othersoftwareisloadeduponrequest.ItwouldbeniceifUTSincludedacomputerwhentheysetupapodium,buttheyhavealwaysmaintainedthatinstructorscanbringtheirownlaptop.Asbudgetstightenindepartments,andfewerpeoplearegettinglaptops,wearegettingmorerequeststoinstalldesktopcomputersininstructorstations.WerecentlystartedtrainingpeoplehowtousetheirsmartphonestoconnectforbasicPowerpointpresentationsandwebsearches.CEC(RonnieWilkinson)WedependuponUTSforourclassroomtechnology.OurcollegeITmanagerswillmakebest-effortattemptstoresolvethe"easy"issuessomeonemaybehavingwiththetechnology,butifthereisarealissue,wemustescalatetoUTS(whoinstalledthetech).Wedonotplacecomputersinourclassrooms.Thecollegemadethestrategicdecision(beforemytime)thatallfacultywouldhavelaptopsfromwhichtoteach.Thiscanbeaproblemforpeoplefromothercollegeswhentheregistrarschedulesthemtoteachinaclassroominoneofourbuildings.Asamatteroffact,IbelievethatArtsandScienceshasinstalledacomputerinoneofourclassroomsforaprevioussemester,anditisstillthere.(Ihopetheyarepatchingit.)Wemaintainthecomputersinteachingcomputerlabs,buthavemadethedecisionthissummertohaveUTSinstallandmanageanyA/Vequipmentinthoselabsgoingforward.Thiswillhopefullyprovideconsistencyinthesystemsbetweentheclassroomsandtheteachinglabs.ForthingsthatUTSdoesnotprovide,suchaslecturecapture,wedohavesomehome-grownadhocsolutionsinplaceinrandomclassroomsthatwereputinplacebyvariousindividualdepartments.Itisn'tideal,butitprovidestheminimalsolutionwheneveraneedcomesupforaparticularclass.CIC(JillChappel-Fail)JournalismSchool:TheCollegeTechOfficemaintainstheMacMinicomputersinthe16classroomsaswedeterminebestforourJournalismSchoolfaculty.TheTechOfficecreatesamastercomputerimageoftheoperatingsystemandvarioussoftwarepackagesthatareinstalledonallclassroompodiummachines.Allcomputershave2webbrowsers,Office2016,Symantecanti-virusandsecuritypackagesInspirionandFireEye.SomeclassroomshavedifferentsoftwaredependinguponJournalismSchoolinstructoruseandsubsequentlicensingissues.Thecomputersarereimagedwithupdatedoperatingsystemandsoftwareupgradesatleastonceayear.
