WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE AN ADVANCED APPRENTICE?

Qamar Iqbal, 22, joined Jaguar Land Rover three years ago as an Advanced Apprentice, after completing his studies.

“The apprenticeship allows me to gain vital qualifications, while at the same time doing something I enjoy and have a passion for. I get to work with innovative technology, applying what I’ve learnt in the classroom back in the workplace.

I got the chance to be part of the development of the Discovery Sport. Definitely my proudest moment so far. I even travelled overseas to Belgium for testing. My contribution was to instrument the vehicle with

various sensors and gauges, and analyse the stresses and strains.

As an Advanced Apprentice, the key is to have good attention to detail in everything you do – especially in timekeeping and organisation, as the culture here is fast-paced, yet enjoyable. Everyone is always willing to offer help and advice. My next steps are to gain a degree and move up the ladder – hopefully reaching management level.”

MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING

Here, you’ll build on our iconic designs or breathe life into new ones. You’ll do this in one of three ways; by translating 2D concepts into 3D products, developing concepts and data into digital or clay models, or by turning geometrical data into exciting new vehicles.

Here, you’ll apply your engineering skills in one of two key areas. You may work with Vehicle Calibration, carrying out performance data tests to support our vehicle development programmes. Alternatively, you might work in Computer-Aided Design where you’ll learn forming and machining techniques prior to blending Computer-Aided Engineering and Modelling to generate vehicle geometry.

In our Engineering Cost Estimation department, you’ll develop a core understanding of engineering in addition to a range of financial and analytical skills. In other roles, you’ll solve supplier technical issues in our manufacturing sites, while developing your overall technical knowledge. You’ll also visit suppliers to help them grow their lean manufacturing techniques and quality approach.

In this role, you’ll be pivotal to the launch planning and smooth delivery of exciting new products. Your studies will help you focus on the advanced manufacturing techniques and project management skills required to launch our products on time.

Join us as an Engineering Degree Apprentice and you’ll start influencing our success in routes across our business, including:

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE AN ENGINEERING DEGREE APPRENTICE?

Larissa Evans, 21, joined Jaguar Land Rover three years ago as an Engineering Degree Apprentice in Gaydon, after completing her A Levels in Maths, Physics and Art.

“The continuous development provided by the apprenticeship has enabled me to apply the skills and knowledge gained from college and university into the workplace, such as understanding manufacturing processes, which have been vital to my role in Cost Engineering. One project I really enjoyed being part of was facilitating the reverse engineering of a MINI. I led different groups of engineers that resulted in generating 405 ‘interesting’ engineering observations, and 95 cost-saving opportunities

submitted for implementation. I took these results and developed a new methodology, enabling sophisticated attribute and cost profiling. I then had the chance to present it to my department (over 100 people), which boosted my confidence and made a real impact to the business.

Upon completion of my apprenticeship, I aspire to be a leader; to have the confidence and knowledge gained through my apprenticeship to be an inspiring role model to others within the company.”

19

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE A FINANCE & ACCOUNTANCY DEGREE APPRENTICE?

Rob Henwood, 18, studied Geography, Business, Economics and Maths at A Level before joining Jaguar Land Rover in the West Midlands as a Finance & Accountancy Degree Apprentice.

“Constant rotation through the varying areas of Finance within Jaguar Land Rover gives you both a great understanding of Finance in a working environment, as well as a good overview of the business as a whole.

So far through the Apprenticeship Scheme, I feel like I’ve learnt more in the past six months than I did in the previous three years. Particularly, as I get to deal with new and varied

people on a day-to-day basis, I’ve really developed my social skills.

My ultimate dream would be to have a career in which I’m given complete freedom to work and travel, all whilst adding value to the company I’m working for. And by building on the base I’ve been provided with by Jaguar Land Rover, I’m confident thatI’ll be able to go as far as possible in my career.”

YOUNG WOMEN IN THE KNOW SCHEME

OUR YOUNG WOMEN IN THE KNOW SCHEMEWe’re committed to inspiring tomorrow’s engineers. A big part of this commitment is striving to change the outdated perceptions of engineering and manufacturing, and encouraging more young women to consider careers in these fields. Our Young Women In The Know Scheme was launched in 2012, and has since engaged more than 200 participants.

WHAT TO EXPECT

During the week, you’ll get the chance to tour Jaguar Land Rover’s Manufacturing, Design and Engineering sites, meet current female apprentices, graduates and managers and spend a day gaining hands-on work experience alongside our expert engineering teams.

All applicants will be screened by the apprentice recruitment team, which is aligned with the standard apprentice application process. Those who meet the requirements and are selected to participate in the Young Women In The Know scheme will attend an assessment centre on the final day of the course, to hopefully join the full apprenticeship scheme.

21

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE ON THE YOUNG WOMEN IN THE KNOW SCHEME?

Lucy Malpass, 16, joined Jaguar Land Rover as an Advanced Apprentice last year after taking part in the Young Women In The Know Scheme.

“I applied for the scheme after hearing about it at school. Not only was it a chance for me to get an insight into the business, it also gave me the confidence to embark on a career in what’s seen as a traditionally male-dominated field.

Throughout the week, I learnt a lot about Jaguar Land Rover as a company, and got the chance to better my social skills through participation in numerous team-building exercises. Speaking to other women within

different parts of the business, some of whom also started as apprentices, really made me realise my potential.

The culture at Jaguar Land Rover is motivating. When you go to a plant, you can really see and feel the good work ethic and team spirit. Everyone here carries a positive attitude, which makes Jaguar Land Rover a great environment to work and learn in.”

“ Speaking to other women within the business made me realise my potential.”

APPRENTICE FAQs

AM I CLASSED AS A STUDENT?

Q.

CAN I CHOOSE MY ROUTE?Q.

WHAT DO I DO DURING COLLEGE CLOSURE TIMES?

WHERE COULD I BE BASED?

Q. Q.

IF I DO NOT OBTAIN THE REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, CAN YOU KEEP THE OFFER OPEN FOR ME NEXT YEAR?

Q.

From our perspective, you’re a full-time employee and will be treated as such. However, please talk with your college about the additional benefits associated with student status.

A.

We’ll give you an opportunity to state your preferences after outlining your options. Our team then establish the best fit between your aspirations and our business needs. However, if the majority want a certain route, we balance this with the business needs that the cohort has been hired for. This means that you may not get your first choice. If we have to choose who gets which position, the people with the highest assessment centre score will get the first choice.

A.

If you don’t have adequate holiday days accumulated, you’ll have a placement with your home department.

A.

Unfortunately, due to the high number of applications, this is not possible. However, if you have progressed through our recruitment process, then we would strongly recommend you consider re-applying the following year, provided you acquire the necessary qualifications.
