ISWA-SWIS Winter School

The objective of the ISWA-SWIS WinterSchool is to provide advanced knowledgein the field of waste management to aninternational audience of existing andemerging solid waste experts. At the jointISWA and SWIS (Solid Waste Institute forSustainability) Winter School at theUniversity of Texas at Arlington, togetherwith the cities of Irving, Garland, andGrand Prairie Texas, USA, the participantswill have the opportunity to gainknowledge on the challenges of solidwaste management in developingeconomies. However, the unique aspectof the Winter School is the blend of in-class and hands on training. The in-class,theory based training and hands-on,operational training are perfectlybalanced - with one week dedicated toeach.

Participants will learn to understand:

➢ Landfill siting, design and construction, and operation

➢ Landfill leachate and gas management and utilization (LFGTE)

➢ Sustainable waste management (including recycling, composting and waste to energy)

➢ Waste Economics including waste business development

Specialty areas such as perpetual orsustainable landfill, landfill design andoperation and the landfill miningincluding feasibility, preliminaryinvestigation, operation and managementof landfill mining, and impact of landfillmining of sustainable waste managementsystem will be extensively covered.Selected project case studies will bepresented and discussed to enhancelearning experience

Participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Online RegistrationRegistration fees include course participation, course material, coffee/tea breaks and lunch as well as transfers to and from the university for the technical site visits during teaching days.

Upon registration, participants accept all arrangements organized by ISWA and SWIS. The organizers do not assume liability during field demonstrations and technical visits. Travel health insurance is advisable. The programme may be subject to change.

Cancellation policy

Cancellation policyISWA-SWIS reserve the right to cancel the course if the minimum number of participants is not reached.

Location & Infrastructure

The Solid Waste Institute forSustainability (SWIS) is housed at theUniversity of Texas at Arlington, Texas,USA. The center is located close toDallas ‐ Fort Worth (DFW) Airport inTexas with easy and direct access tonational and international destinations.Solid waste personnel from differentdeveloping countries can easily accessSWIS because most of the major citieshave direct flights to DFW airport.

The city of Arlington is located in themiddle of Dallas - Fort Worth (12 mileseast of downtown Fort Worth and 20miles west of downtown Dallas).Arlington is home to the AmericanLeague West Texas Rangers baseballteam (playing out of Global Life Park),home to the NFC East Dallas Cowboysfootball team (playing out of AT&Tstadium), and Six Flags (the biggestregional theme park in the world -www.sixflags.com).

The major facilities that are part of theSWIS for research and training are: (i)Civil Engineering Building (CELB), (ii)Engineering Research Building (ERB),(iii) University of Texas at ArlingtonResearch Institute (UTARI).

The city of Fort Worth’s Annual StockShow and Rodeo will take place duringthe winter school. The SWIS WinterSchool organizers are planning to takeall the participants to this year’s RodeoShow. The details can be found atwww.fwssr.com

NBA Basketball Team Dallas Mavericksregular season will be going on duringthe winter school program and theparticipants will have the opportunityto watch live NBA Games.

2020 SWIS-ISWA Essay Competition on“China Banned Plastic Waste – Perspective and Solution”.

China banned plastic waste import. What now! We need perspective & local solution to a GLOBAL problem. Therefore, the Solid Waste Institute for Sustainability (SWIS) at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), Texas, USA is pleased to announce the 2020 SWIS-ISWA Essay Competition on “China Banned Plastic Waste – Perspective and Solution” Students and professionals from around the world are invited to write an essay on this issue considering solid waste management in their respective countries. The authors of the best essays will be awarded scholarship to attend the ISWA-SWIS Winter School (to be held at UTA from January 13-24, 2020). However, full time students will be given preference for scholarship.

SWIS has introduced these scholarships to promote the importance of sustainable waste management for developing healthy and sustainable urban cities.

Scholarships cover the following

➢ Free registration to attend the 2019 ISWA-SWIS Winter School at UTA

➢ Free lodging during their stay for the Winter School

➢ Breakfast and lunch will be provided

➢ Free transportation during their stay for the Winter School

Eligibility for Scholarship1:

A. Currently enrolled as full-time students in the following (or similar) programs with a strong interest in sustainability/environmental issues:

1. Civil/Environmental Engineering; 2. Urban and Regional Planning;3. Social Science or Environmental/International Policy Studies; 4. Business – with a strong connection/interest in environmental issues.

B. Young solid waste management and business professionals (less than five years in their professional jobs).

Deadline of Essay Submission: 30 September 2019 (Texas local time)

Note: (1) Anyone can participate in the Winter School with their own funding or funding from other sources. Self-funded candidates do not need to submit an essay

Format and Requirements

➢ Essay must be submitted in the paper format attached in the folder as doc/docxfile. Unformatted essays will be disqualified.

➢ Essays must be single-spaced with font size of 11 Arial. The Essay must be written in English.

➢ Essay must be maximum 8 pages including reference and appendix.

➢ Essays must be the original work of the participants. Plagiarized essays will be immediately disqualified. Participants can seek advice and help from a mentor or supervisor.

➢ The author of the essay is liable for any copy right issues regarding the material he/she submits.

➢ The author gives SWIS and ISWA the right to publish and disseminate his/her essay as a whole or in parts, may it be electronically or printed.

➢ Use the following coversheet for submission.

➢ A maximum 250 words biography of the applicants. Also, a maximum 250 words personal statement about why the candidate is interested in participating in the Winter School.

Essay Layout

Abstract: The abstract should be conciseand should present the aim of the work,essential results and conclusion. Itshould be typed in font size 11, singlespaced. The length should not exceed500 words.

Key words: For indexing purposes, a listof 3-6 key words is essential.

Introduction: The introduction mustclearly state the specific objectives of thework presented. The introduction mustplace the work described in anappropriate context, including impetusfor the research, practical applications(including estimates of costs, whereapplicable), and results of a literaturestudy.

Background: This section shoulddescribe the literatures or backgroundstudies on the research.

Materials and methods: This sectionshould describe and reference thetechniques applied in the investigationand make clear the protocol of the study.The model and sensitivity of monitoringequipment (if any) should be stated inthis section.

Results and discussion: This sectionshould explore the implications of thefindings but not be highly speculative.

Conclusion: This section should tie themajor findings to the objective(s) statedin the introduction and suggest thepractical or theoretical relevance of themanuscript to future research, wastemanagement practices, or regulationsand policies.

Acknowledgements: Pleaseacknowledge contributors and sponsorsto your work.

References: Reference should be listed inalphabetical order and appear at the endof the manuscript. Citations in the textshould be denoted with the author'ssurname and the year of publication(Use APA Method).

If the text contains two or more paperswritten by the same author(s) in thesame year, the citations should bedifferentiated by a letter; e.g.: (Grigg1996a). Journal names should be givenin full. Titles of papers should be given intheir original language and, if possible,they should be followed by a translationinto English in parentheses.

Illustrations and Tables: Original linedrawings and photographs must be twicethe desired size (maximum printed width130 mm) at a resolution of at least 300dpi. Remember that text and symbolsshould be legible in print. All illustrationsshould be in “.jpg” format. Tables, figuresand captions/legends should beembedded in the text where theynaturally belong.
