IST 100-101 ISTANBUL CITY ORIENTATION HALF DAY

Byzantium, Constantinople and

Istanbul are names that conjure up

images of a great city’s past.

Istanbul is not only a city with a

colorful past, but also a bustling

modern-day city full of life and

activity. During this orientation to the

city, view some of the most

significant historical and cultural

sites in Istanbul.

Drive through the streets of ancient Pera (Latin Quarter) and Taksim

Square. Then cross the Golden Horn over the Ataturk Bridge to the old

town. View the city walls dating back to the fourth century, which were

destroyed during the conquest in 1453 and the Roman

Aqueduct of Valens from the second century. Tour the

Sehzade Mosque, which was designed by architect Mimar

Sinan. As chief architect of the palace, Sinan designed

more than 360 structures. The Sehzade Mosque

represents his mature style and the first grand mosque he

created. Drive by the Hippodrome and view the Serpentine

Column and the Theodosius Column, both of which were

brought from Egypt in the fourth century.

Next, visit the Blue Mosque with its unique configuration of

six minarets and blue-tiled interior. Afterwards walk to the

6th Century Byzantine Cistern, walk underground and enjoy the time machine. Conclude with a visit to Hagia

Sophia, One of the most visited sites in Istanbul.

Please note: This trip involves a fair amount of walking, bring water. Visitors to the mosque must cover their arms

IST 104-103 SUFI DERVISH CEREMONY – GROUP A EVENING

You have probably heard about the

Whirling Dervishes in Turkey. In

contrast to the main body of Islamic

belief, dervish groups extol the virtues

of music and dance, including a whirling

ceremony that represents a union with

God. The music is vital to this tradition

and serves as a vehicle of

enlightenment and revelation. The

ceremony’s compositions and the

instrumental ensemble of ney, tambur, kanun, küdüm and rebab formed

the foundation of the glorious Ottoman classical music that, like the Sema,

was suppressed in the early years of the republic.

In these Sema ceremonies, the “Whirling Dervishes” use their mystical

music and dance to reflect the transcendent value of the heart’s purity,

the image of the perfect being, and the belief that the Sema is one way of reaching total peace with oneself and

with the universe at large. This practicum will provide participants the opportunity to learn about the philosophy,

symbolism, meanings, and instruments of this traditional ceremony that dates back to the 13th century.

Participants should be respectful of this ritual and should dress conservatively. In keeping with tradition, men and

women may be asked to observe the ceremony in separate groups.

“Excellent, worthwhile experience!” – Jenelle, Summer 2012 Voyager

Suggestion for students from Melissa K, Summer 12 student: “If you are not open to learning and emerging

yourself into another religion, then do not embarrass SAS or your fellow students. I loved this program.”

Please note: Dress appropriately for this religious ceremony. Flash photography is NOT PERMITTED.

Istanbul is a mystical and colorful city, especially at

night. For a chance to feel the unique energy of after-

dark Istanbul, we invite you to join us on this

engaging outing.

After enjoying dinner on board the ship, meet your

guide at the pier and begin your Istanbul discovery,

beginning with the lively restaurants and waterside

cafes near the Galata Bridge. At the New Mosque,

evening prayer. Rejoining your motor coach, venture

to the Kumkapi district, famous for its fish markets. Stroll along the wharf,

experiencing the nighttime atmosphere as revelers dine at the

restaurants and musical trios perform on the street. Hopefully there will

still be a few Ice Cream vendors who put on a show when serving their delightful “sticky” ice cream. Continue your

IST 201-301 CAPPADOCIA 2 DAYS/1 NIGHT

Historically one of the top-rated

field programs! Cappadocia began

with the eruption of two volcanoes,

Erciyes Dagi and Melendiz Dagi.

When hot ash was dispersed over

the terrain, it created a thick layer

of soft, porous stone called tuff.

The indigenous people used crude

tools to carve sturdy homes out of

this pliable substance. Eventually they carved churches, schools and an

entire village. To escape persecution, the Christians also built underground

cities.

On the first day you will visit the underground cities at Kaymakli, which

descend nine floors below ground level. Then go to Nevsehir, the wealthy

center of Cappadocia, the provincial capital and largest town in the region.

The landscape of Nevsehir resembles the surface of the moon. You will

visit the rock-carved, cave-like churches. In the evening enjoy a

performance of Whirling Dervishes. Dinner and overnight in Cappadocia.

Start the second day with an early-morning balloon ride (up to 12

passengers per balloon) to give participants a bird’s-eye view of this

spectacular “lunar” landscape. Check out the video on our website from

2011. Erosion wore away sections of tuff and created these “fairy

chimneys” (conical rock formations) at Pasabag. The chimneys usually

have basalt—a hard, dense, dark volcanic rock—at the very top. Although the land is rugged and dry, it is remarkably

fertile. In the old city of Avanos you can see calcium pools and thermal springs. Ortahisar, another nearby village, has

a rock that dominates the town. This 86-meter wonder once housed the whole village. At the end of the day transfer

to Kayseri for a return flight to Istanbul.

Please note: the BALLOONING experience is INCLUDED in the price of this program. Participants may Opt-Out of the

ballooning by contacting the Field Office and receive a $200 credit on the price of the program. Participants will be

asked to sign a waiver onsite for the ballooning activity. This tour not suitable for disabled guests.

IST 203-401 100th ANNIVERSARY- GALLIPOLI & TROY W/ JOHN BOYER 2 DAYS/1 NIGHT

Depart Istanbul and travel with

perennial powerhouse

professor John Boyer 5 hours

across Turkish landscapes

towards our destination of

Gallipoli: the scene of one of

WWI bloodiest campaigns. This

year marks the 100 year

anniversary of the start of this

crucial military campaign that involved

troops from across the planet, and was of

immense strategic value to multiple

empires. Soldiers from Australia/New

Zealand (ANZAC) joined forces from the

UK/France in an attempt to capture the

peninsula from the Ottoman Empire.

While on the trip we'll visit the ANZAC

landing cove, main battle sites, cemeteries and

memorials, and learn about how the defeat of the Allied

forces here became a defining moment in history for

Turkey, and a foundation stone of the modern identities

of Australians and New Zealanders. Participants may

want to watch the Water Diviner (Russell Crowe, 2015)

and/or Gallipoli (Mel Gibson, 1981) for inspiration.

Thanks to Homer, Troy is probably the most celebrated archaeological site in

Turkey. Until the late 1800s, it was generally thought that Troy (Truva) existed

in legend only. In 1886, an amateur archaeologist and German businessman,

Heinrich Schliemann, obtained permission from the Ottoman government to

start digging on a hill where earlier excavators had already found the remains

of a classical temple. Schliemann’s work actually caused a certain amount of

damage to the site, but the excavations did uncover nine layers of remains,

representing distinct and consecutive city developments spanning four

millennia. The oldest, Troy I, dates back to about 3600 BCE.

Greek Orthodox Patriarchate

Church of Chora

Peter and Paul Church

MINIMUM REGISTRATION: 11

MAXIMUM CAPACITY: 45

Religious Studies students will love this

program. The ancient Greek city of

Byzantium was enlarged and formally

christened “New Rome” in 330 by

Emperor Constantine. As the Western half

of the Roman Empire crumbled,

Constantinople was developing into a

major power bridging the cultures of the

East and West. The Byzantine (Orthodox) Church dominated religious and

cultural life and was involved in the political operation of the city. The

patriarch of Constantinople had a position analogous to that of the Pope in

Rome. Relations between the Eastern and Western branches of the church

were undermined by Rome’s claims of primacy, an edict forbidding image

worship, and the order to remove all religious statues and to white-wash the

walls of the church. These factors and the crusades contributed to the

eventual separation of the papacy in the West and the Orthodox Church in

the East.

This trip explores the role of Christianity in Turkey. You will visit the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate at Fener and the

Roman Catholic Church Peter and Paul, where you will talk with clergy. Later, you will see the Church of Chora

(fourth century), Restored by the American Byzantine Institute, it houses remarkable mosaics and frescoes

depicting the lives of Mary and Jesus. Continue to the Beyoglu district of the city where you will visit the Roman

Catholic Church of San Antonio and learn about the existing church and its status within a Muslim country.

(Please note: Significant walking involved in this tour)

IST 104-403 SUFI DERVISH CEREMONY – GROUP B EVENING

(Please note: Dress appropriately for this religious ceremony. Flash photography is NOT PERMITTED.)
