Due to its size Koh Chang offers something for all ages, tastes and budgets. From expansive white sandy beaches, scenic waterfalls, fascinating marine life, quiet, undiscovered mangrove lined bays to full moon parties and beach bars pumping out last year’s dance music till the early hours.

With the Thai government now promoting Koh Chang as a premier tourist destination it isn’t surprising that the island is currently undergoing a boom in development with chipboard backpacker huts slowly being replaced by modern boutique bungalow resorts and family friendly hotels. Phuket has been attracting tourists in large numbers for over 30 years, Samui for 20 years and now Koh Chang, the second largest island in Thailand, is playing catch up.

As Koh Chang is still far less developed than many other tropical Thai islands, the main benefit for tourists visiting now is obvious - even at high season the island and its palm-fringed beaches rarely seem busy. The rela-tive lack of development also means that Koh Chang is attracting entrepreneurs, both Thai and foreign, eager to grab a piece of the action in anticipation of future rewards. Anyone interested in investing in Koh Chang should take note that the Tourist Authority of Thailand plan to double the number of visitors to the island by 2011. Look around, opportunities abound.

There are two options, a minivan or a full-size bus. You may have thought that getting five English guys

with backpacks the size of ATM machines, four large Germans, three full figured Scandinavian girls and a couple of bewildered Asian visitors loaded down with camera gear into the back of a minivan was a physical impossibility. It isn’t as you’ll discover if you make the trip to Koh Chang by minibus.

Convenience and time are the main selling points of the minibus experience. The regular bus takes an hour or two longer and it terminates in Trat, from where you have to take a little blue pickup (30 baht) to the Laem Ngop pier. (Don’t worry about not being able to pronounce ‘Laem Ngop’ correctly as

everyone in and around the bus station knows where you’re heading.)

Figure on 250 - 300 baht for the minibus experience, 170 – 200 baht for the big bus. Time wise, you’re look-ing at about four and a half hours for the minibus, which will go direct to the ferry pier and up to six hours for the big bus which goes to Trat town and makes several stops on the way. Add on an additional 20-30 minutes for the transfer to Laem Ngop.

An airconditioned bus service now runs twice a day from Ekkamai bus sta-tion, Bangkok direct to Cen-trepoint ferry pier. Get the bus at 7.30 am or 9.30 am. The cost is 198 baht per person.Return buses leave Laem Ngop Centrepoint pier at 2pm and 4pm.

There are also regular daily minibuses and public buses making the trip from Pattaya to Koh Chang. Mini-buses usually depart early morning with slower public buses to Trat departing at various times throughout the day from Sukhumvit Road.

BY CAR

BY Plane

BY Car

Bangkok Airways fly into Trat airport from Bangkok. This twice, sometimes thrice, daily 40 minute sky hop is ideal for travelers seeking to avoid a five hour bus ride from Bangkok.

The Trat office of Bangkok Airways can be reached on 039 525 299-30. But you’ll find it easier to book tickets at any travel agents, expect to pay around 2,000 baht / single or 4,000 baht / return.

Look out for low season discounts. From Trat airport take the Bangkok Airways minibus service to any resort on the island, this is by far the easiest, simplest way to reach the island.

Coming from Bangkok, the quickest route is via the motorway (Highway 7) out of the east of the city. Shortly after the second tollbooth, you’ll see a turn off to Ban Bueng, Highway 344.

Stay on the 344, looking out for police check-points and follow the signs to Klaeng then join Highway 3 in Klaeng town. Head past Chanta-buri, follow the signs for Trat. Around 23km outside Trat, turn right at the T-junction with 3156, signposted to Laem Ngop. 20 minutes drive later and you’ll be at the first of the car ferry piers. Total driving time is around four to four and a half hours.

From Pattaya, simply get on Highway 3 (Sukhumvit Road) and head in the direction of Rayong. From Rayong, Highway 3 leads on to Klaneg, Chantaburi and Trat, as described above. Driving time to the ferry pier is approximately three to three and a half hours.

Diving is a wonder ful experience in and around the turquoise water of Koh Chang . Dive sites include wreck, coral reefs, rock out-crops and drop-offs. Experts say that visibility can up to and beyond 65 metres on a perfect calm day. Most sites are normally accessed by dive boat leaving from all the major beach areas as well as from the best dive hop-off point of Bang Bao. Boat time to the sites var-ies from a few minutes, but normally, allow for sixty to ninety minutes of relaxed boating to get there.Unfor-tunately you won’t be able to swim with dolphins in the sea off Koh Chang. Even seeing them any place other than on a menu is a rare rare occurence, although they have been sighted off the west coast of Koh Chang and

regularly make appearances in the channel between Koh Chang and Koh Ngam, way over in the far southeast of the island. Seahunter Fishing Tel (039) 558101OK.Diving Tel.089-9367080, Dolphin Divers Tel 0870281627Eco-Divers Tel. 086-111-9967

Koh Mak Koh Mak is a relatively small island covering an area of 16sqm.

It has far more of a tropical desert island feel to it than Koh Chang as no matter where you are you’re never more than a few minutes from a palm fringed beach.

No wonder that The Sunday Times newspaper named Koh Mak as one of its ‘World’s Top 10 Secret Beaches’ in late 2006. Away from the two main beaches on the northwest and northeast coasts, the scenery mainly comprises rubber and coconut plantations.

Most visitors opt to see the island by foot, bicycle or on a rental motorbike – there are very few cars on the island as there are very few roads. The island has 24 hour electricity.

Koh RayangPrivate island with a clean beach,

can be reached by speed boat: takes 30 minutes and costs Bt 600 two ways. It’s a great place to stay and relax. Coral reefs here invite all good swimmers to see the colourful trees.

Koh LaoyaA little way south of Koh Sai

Khao lies Koh Laoya, a white sand fringed island which makes a great sport for snorkeling or simply do-ing nothing. There is one resort on the island which can be visited on day trips from Koh Chang.

Koh KoodThe second largest, after

Koh Chang, of the 52 islands that comprise the Koh Chang archipelago and if it wasn’t lo-cated so damn far away would easily be the most popular as it’s an island that’s definitely worth a visit. It’s remote location has ensured that it hasn’t attracted masses of developers looking to make a few quick baht. Therefore, the resorts that have been built have been done so, for the most part, very tastefully.

In addition, the comparatively small number of visitors means that there isn’t enough business to support hoards of vendors selling tacky t-shirts, souvenir woodcarvings and henna tattoos.

Koh WaiKoh Wai is a medium sized island around 12 kilometres

south of Salakphet Bay. Reaching the island is easy with daily boat services from both Koh Chang and also Laem Ngop on the mainland.

Although the island does have attractive beaches and several resorts in which to stay, it’s best avoided if one of your prerequisites for a beach experience is that the beach have fine, white powdery sand.

Unlike small neighbouring islands Koh Wai’s quiet, narrow beaches are covered in coarser red sand.

Koh KradadNamed after Kradad trees, which mainly cover the island. During

the French colonization of Indochina, Koh Kradad was targeted as a possible territory of expansion. Thus it was the first island to be issued land title deeds by the order of King Rama V to confirm Thailand’s sovereignty over the island. The long white beach and the corals are the main attractions.

Koh ngam lies a few hundred metres from the south-western tip of Koh Chang. It is reminiscent of a smaller Koh Phi-phi as it consists of two hills linked together by a wide sandbar. Dolphins are often seen in this area and the island’s unspoilt twin lagoons make for a great place to swim.. The 100 metre hill on the southwestern side of the island can be climbed to give great views of outlying islands such as Koh Maak and Koh Wai.

Koh Sai Khao This island is in the middle of Salakphet Bay. Private and tranquil, Ban Mak Dang offers you a TRUE get away… Spa-cious modern bungalows located in a serene garden atmosphere.

Daily, weekly, and monthly rates.

Ban Mak Dang

Koh Mak

Koh Mak is a relatively small, island, far more the typical desert island mod-el than the mountainous Koh Chang and Koh Kood. And as most develop-ment is limited to the western side of the island, no matter where you stay you are usually within a walking or cycling distance of wherever you want to go . . . which is just as well as you can’t expect much in the way of public transport.

There are 2 villages on Koh Mak, ‘Ban Ao Nid’ on the South-eastern coast is home to around 50 families plus the island’s school, temple and clinic and ‘Ban Laem Son’ which lies in the northwest corner of the island away from virtually all of the tourist development. Elsewhere you will find smallham-lets of a few homes clustered in areas on the eastern shores.

Today, “Koh Mak ”

Ao Nid Pier – Located on the east, Ao Nid Pier is the main cargo pier and has good views south to Koh Kood. From the pier, a paved road leads to the centre of the island and then branches off to the various beaches. Nearby is Wat Samakkeetham, Buddhist temple which also overlooks the bay and is open to all.

Other areas of the island that

…today

Although there are a couple of pick up truck taxis on the island now which charge 50 Baht/person. Coconut palms, rubber plantations and dusty dirt roads account for 90% of the scenery on the island with which equates to this not only being a beach destination but one that’s also suitable for people wanting to explore by mountain bike.

At Koh Mak Seafood, by the shore below the pier, the owner has put together a small collection of old photos and artifacts which give you an insight into the history of Koh Mak. He will be happy to talk you though it. A far different history to Koh Chang’s

you might like to visit include

In the northwest of the island, Suan Yai Beach, offers sun wor-shipper’s the chance to toast themselves along a 2 kilometre stretch of white sand beach. From Koh Mak Vista it’s only 5 minutes walk to the southwestern shore of the island where you’ll find Ao Kao beach, the northern stretch of which is the most developed area on the island which small resorts lining the beach and an increasing number of small cafes and res-taurants on the main road which runs along the rear of the resorts.

Highlights include a huge tree and if you look at the standing Buddha statues you’ll notice that the images have definite feminine curves and features – in tribute to the founder of the temple, the mother, and grandmother, of many of the island’s current resort owners, who donated the money to build it.

Koh Kood has a lot to offer and visitors who come here usually find it difficult to leave.

Many people re-visit year after year, drawn by the relaxed and laid back pace of life and natural beauty of the island.

There are a number of stunning beaches and beautiful bays with crys-tal-clear waters - perfect for lazing the day away and relaxing during your stay here.

Some of the more popu-lar beaches are Taphao Beach, Klong Chao Beach, Klong Hin Beach and Phrao Beach.

Besides relaxing on these tropical stretches of white sand, snorkel-ing at the beautiful coral reefs is also popular and magical way to spend your time.

The Koh Kood waters are home to a stunning variety of marine life which can be explored free-diving and snorkel-ing the shallows. If you want to be a bit more adventurous, kayaks and canoes are available for rent from a number of resorts.

The Klongs (rivers) are a gentle alternative, but sea kayaking is also a lot of fun! Klong Chao wa-terfall can be reached by Kayak and it’s a peaceful paddle, during which you can also enjoy the beau-tiful bird life of the Klong.

Some of the more ex-pensive Resorts on Koh Kood offer Banana/Donut-boat-trips and water-skiing.

Visitors can do drop line fishing at the beaches and bays or rent a boat over night (about 3000 Baht) in order to try night time fishing.

The village Aow Salad (Baan Aow Salad) in the Salad Bay (Aow Salad) is located in the northeast part of the island.

It is the biggest fishing village on Ko Kood and fresh seafood can be bought every day. It’s a fun day trip and an inter-esting glimpse into the local way of life.

PATTAYA HiSTorYFifty years ago Pattaya was a

sleepy little fishing village. Its only claim to fame being that it had, in the Vietnam War and an incursion by more benign foreign troops.

Thailand supported the American efforts in the area by providing bases, manned by thousands of young Americans requiring rest and recreation.

Pattaya continued to grow in popularity at such a rate, with both Thai and foreign tourists, that the local government could not cope with the administration. The Administrative and infrastructure conbined with Naklua took place in 1976 and the government promulgated the Pattaya City Act B.E. 2521 (1978), thereby joining Naklua and Pattaya to form the fifth local government municipality. Thus Pattaya City was born, and with an ever-increasing influx of visitors and residents from the burgeoning surrounding industrial estates, she has developed into what she is today.

climate : Pattaya has three seasons. November to February, it’s high seasons, March to May it’s windy and June to October hot and also raining.

accommodation : Ranges from luxuriously appointed beachside hotels with superb convention facilities to simple guesthouses.

Residents and Lifestyles : Pattaya has many expatriate residents, and is essentially an international tourist resort and expanding city, so the Thai population is itself very

internationalized. Most notices are in English as well as Thai, and you will find plenty of signboards in German and even Russian. Most vendors are used to non-Thai speakers and are ready with at least a smattering of English or German, vigorous miming, a smile, and an ever-ready calculator.

Within twenty years, Pattaya has been transformed from a sleepy f i s h i n g c o m m u n i t y i n t o a n international resort often referred to as the ‘Thai Rivera’. Pattaya is literally a place where East meets West, both in color and character, and is probably the most cosmopolitan place in Thailand after Bangkok.

Pattaya beach : A curving 4 kilometre beach on the Gulf of Thailand, Pattaya is split into three

main areas. South Pattaya is the hub of Pattaya’s nightlife with all manner of shops, department stores, boutiques, beauty salons, supermarkets, bars, restaurants, nightclubs and general action. As you progress northwards, along the tree-lined promenade which is home to many of Pattaya’s mid-range beachfront hotels.

Naklua Beach : Immediately north of Pattaya, is a much quieter beach with a fishing harbour; in fact, many of the locals still make a living from fishing. It doesn’t have as many restaurants or expensive resort hotels as its neighbour to the south, but neither does it have the

rowdy nightlife. Jomtien Beach : Around the

headland, about 2 kilometres south of Pattaya, Jomtien is quieter and less congested than its more famous neighbour but has an ever increasing range of good value accommodation and restaurants. More toned down than Pattaya, it’s becoming very popular, especially for lovers of water sports-it ’s Thailand’s premier windsurfing location.

Koh Larn : Koh Larn or Coral Island, is a 45 minute ride offshore by tourist boat or 15 minute hop by speed boat and is the largest of Pattaya’s conveniently located islands. Major attractions include sightseeing tours along coral reefs viewed from a glass-bottomed boat, snorkeling, scuba diving, windsurfing, skiing, and parasailing.

Koh Sak : Only 600 metres from Koh Larn. Koh Sak is a tiny horseshoe shaped island. Its twin beaches are a usual stop for day tripping tourists to swim. There’s also a coral reef just off the beach.

Koh Phai : A further 40 minutes sail Beyond Koh Larn lies Koh Phai, a virtually deserted island which is under the jurisdiction of the Royal Thai Navy. Visitors are not allowed to stay overnight here, but it has fine sandy beaches that are open during the day and receive relatively few visitors even in high season.

Koh Krok : A very small island, around 8 kilometers from the mainland that is most frequently visited by divers and snorkellers who are keen to explore the vibrant coral reefs.
