Create space Children benefit from organisation. Create a special space for doing things like homework and try to make homework a calm experience.
Be available to help if your child has a question If you are helping your child, try to make it a positive time that you share together and minimise stress related to homework. Focus on building their confidence, rather than ‘having the answer’.
Talk to your child’s teacher about homework and find out about your school’s guidelines It’s good to have rules about homework, but it’s confusing for children to be expected to do more or less than asked at school.
Welcome back! We hope that all families had a wonderful break and enjoyed time with friends and family. Time away from our everyday tasks can be very restful. We have another busy term ahead with only 10 weeks of intensive learning until mid year holidays.
Thank you to all families that helped to collect Coles Sports vouchers for our school. We have managed to collect over 29,000 vouchers to help us purchase some new Sports equipment.
Praise your child for their effort and persistence when they are doing homework
Empathy Respect Community Excellence
Continuing on from last term we have a few more tips from the following article which has been written by the Department for Education for families. Tips 1, 2, 3 and 4 were added to Term 1 newsletters. Please see below for Tip 5. You can also find it on the Department website if you wish to read ahead of time or if you have missed any tips.
www.decd.sa.gov.au/sites/g/files/.../helping_children_learn-primaryschool
Tip 5: Create a good homework environment
There are a couple of important things you can do to get the most out of homework. One is building your child’s confidence and the other is to support them to learn on their own. The ways to help them will change as they get older.

ABSENCE - SMS 0407 949 271
Please add this number into your contacts
East Torrens Primary School is moving forward with the times and becoming
more efficient in communicating with families and the community. We have
installed a new system which will support us with attendance, absences and
many other administrative tasks in an instantaneous manner.
ABSENCES: Families will still need to notify the school of any absences and a
message will still be sent to your phone for unexplained absences. The new
phone number for families to message is 0407 949 271.
LATE ARRIVAL/EARLY DEPARTURE: Families will still need to sign in and out at
the front office as usual.
VOLUNTEERS: Any volunteers will also need to sign in and out at the front office
where a badge will be printed and must be worn while on school grounds.
SMS: You can send a message to 0407 949 271 notifying the school of your child's
absence.
Oliphant
Science
Awards
Is your child interested in science? The Oliphant Science Awards
offer a broad range of topics which children can explore through
robotics, photography, writing, crystal making, poster design,
investigations and game making. Although, this is an
extra-curricular activity students are welcome to seek feedback
and guidance from myself, to ensure that their entry is of a high
standard and meets all of the requirements. If you feel that your
child would be interested in participating, please ask them to see me or contact the front office,
so that I can organise a registration form.
You can find further information at http://www.oliphantscienceawards.com.au.
Go to ‘Event Info’ and ‘2018 Award categories’ to find out about the various topics and
categories.

Congratulations to all the students who have achieved 95% and above for their attendance in Term 1. Our attendance has significantly improved over the years and currently we are sitting on an average of between 93% to 94%.
I would like to emphasise the importance of arriving to school on time in the mornings. This is a critical time where children see their friends in the morning and have a run around. We have yard supervision from 8.30am every morning. Students then go into their classrooms at 8.40am where they prepare themselves for learning. If you are finding it difficult to get your child to school in the mornings please come and see me.
Student Class Representatives Congratulations to all the students who were nominated and are now representing their class. We acknowledged all the students in SRC at assembly in our first assembly this term.
