Graham Dix from Oxford City Council’sGrass Maintenance Team has beenputting the hedgecutter through itspaces and is delighted with the upgradesthe machine offers over the rival modelhe used previously.

He said: “It’s fantastic. It’s verycomfortable to use and is very precisewith its cut.”

Grounds maintenance supervisor AndyWharton explained: “Graham researchedother hedgecutters and he felt it had thebest features. It was the mostcomfortable to operate, and will providethe best reliability – a key factor in a cityenvironment where we constantlyencounter speed bumps and work inconfined spaces which have the potentialto cause wear and tear issues.”

OXFORD City Council haschosen McConnel to supplythe cutting-edge technologyit needs to maintain itsgrass and hedgerows

The council has just purchased a state-of-the-art McConnel PA6070 VFR PowerArm to keep the city in trim, and sees itas the perfect tool for the challengingurban environment where precision, control and manoeuvrability are crucial.

The council chose McConnel becausethe new hedgecutter comes completewith a series of high-tech features whichmake it ideal for working in thecongested conditions of the city, such asVariable Forward Reach (VFR) andimproved horsepower.

The Council also want to protectemployees from the risks of back andneck strain, and were delighted withVFR because it allows Graham to cutin a position directly alongside thetractor unit.

Oxford City Council purchased themachine from McConnel dealer PATurney of Middleton Stoney.

Turney’s sales manager Nigel Barkerexplained: “The council has made avery good decision to buy qualitybecause in the long term it’s the bestoption – it will mean less downtime formaintenance, a faster and moreefficient performance, and improvedcomfort and health and safety.”

When competing for thecrown as Cheshire’schampion of hedge-cutting,Winsford agriculturalcontractor Paul Hardingknew he had an edge overhis rivals – a brand newPA6585T machine fromMcConnel.

Paul had tested out a number ofmodels from our competitors, butnone came close to matching thefeature-set, technology, and superbflail-cut finish. Paul’s skill andexperience and the McConnelmachine’s precision proved the perfectpartnership and took him to the title.

But it’s not just the quality of cut thatPaul and his father John seek in ahedgecutter.

They cover around 7,000 kilometres ayear carrying out verge and hedgemaintenance working on behalf ofschools, local authorities, farmers andcountryside rangers. Durability, reliabilityand safety are therefore all key factorsin their choice.

John explained: “We’re demandingcustomers and we expect the best. Wework our machines hard, so they have to bevery durable because they get a lot of use.We can’t afford any downtime for repairs soreliability is extremely important to us.”

The pair use McConnel’s compact,PA3430 for jobs wheremanoeuvrability is key, and the state-of-the-art PA6585T when reach, power and precision are crucial.

Paul said: “I tried out a few machinesand discovered the PA6585T enabledme to work much more quickly whilestill offering the best quality. It is a verygood machine and hard to fault.”

“No other company can match theease of the mounting system and theamount of hedge you can cut in asingle pass.

NEW WORLD RECORD - FOR McCONNELMcConnel machines have dominated a record-breaking hedgecutting event that attracted a world-best field of 84 competitors.

A total of 62 title challengers picked a McConnel Power Arm at the Irishhedgecutting championships in Kilkenny – highlighting the company’sreputation as the brand of choice in the country.

The overall winner Peter Byrne of Castledermot took the title with aPA7700T – delivering the best performance over a 20-metre timed cut, around an obstacle-strewn course, and on a wire-rope challenge.

McConnel marketing manager Wayne Brown said the popularity andperformance of McConnel machines at the competition revealed how thecompany is first-choice for the most demanding professional users.

He said “Close to three-quarters of the contestants turned to McConnelwhen their reputation was on the line and that shows how much faith ourIrish customers have in our Power Arms. The popularity of our machinesat such a showpiece event shows that when quality counts it pays todepend on a McConnel.”

McConnel’s most popularPower Arm, the PA6070VFR, has beenperfectly captured inminiature by Irish modelmaker Ciaran Dunne.

Ciaran of Thurles, County Tipperary, hasjust created a limited-edition run of 100miniatures in 1:32 scale – with eachmachine hand-built in brass andcapturing the Power Arm in exquisitedetail.

The model has proved so popular thatwithin hours of going on sale more thantwo-thirds were snapped up bycollectors.

Ciaran, who runs the model-makingcompany Perfect32, worked closely withMcConnel to ensure the best possibleaccuracy. He used the company’stechnical drawings and spent more than230 hours building the first prototype.

The grand unveiling took place atMcConnel’s factory in Ludlow,Shropshire where the models were ‘putthrough their paces’ by the mostdemanding critics – the team that makesthe real machines.

Ciaran said: “I was delighted with thereaction the machines received. Theyproved extremely popular and it was agreat opportunity to examine one next toa full-size PA6070 and compare the twoside-by-side.”

An error of a millimetre can wreck theentire model, so precision, patience anda great eye for detail are crucial increating the miniatures.

Each model features the exact paintcolour featured on McConnel’s full-sizemachines, as well as a precisereproduction of the real decals.

McConnel’s next-generationcontrol system REVOLUTIONhas been put through anexhaustive evaluation by a trioof customers who tested itsprecision and performance in adiverse range of tasks from

have just announced their verdict after afull season working with the new controlsystem.

They believe REVOLUTION is the mostadvanced and feature-packed reach armcontrol system ever created!

“Paul Harding said:“REVOLUTION is a big improvement onother controls I have used and I find itexceptionally helpful.

It allows me to cut with a lot of precisionwhich is important to me because Ialways try to achieve the best possiblecut quality and finish.

“I find EDS makes a huge difference. Ican cut roadside verges faster than withany other control system and that makesme a lot more productive. I looked at acouple of rival systems and nothing reallycomes close to matching EDS orREVOLUTION.”

Alan Marshall said: “I like the key-mapping because it allowsme to control the machine at the touch of a single button. I also like the screenbecause it has great visibility and it’seasy to find all the job information I need.

“REVOLUTION gives you moreproductivity when verge mowing andmore precision when cutting hedges -and I didn’t get any arm fatigue whenusing it so I’d say it’s also a lot morecomfortable to use than other systems.”

McConnel design engineer Kris Perkssaid: “REVOLUTION will boostproductivity, enhance the lifespan of thePower Arm, and improve safety, efficiency

and precision – potentially paying foritself in weeks.

“The feedback we have received fromour customers has been extremelypositive and they feel REVOLUTION ishelping them get the full potential out oftheir Power Arm.”

Mathew Williams said: “I was used to all-on all-off controlsbefore so the large number of proportional controls you get with REVOLUTION are a big improvementover other systems and give you a lotmore precision.

“I really like the way the controls can bemapped to the joystick so you haveeverything you need at your fingertips. The system allows you to do a lot ofcomplex operations, but it’s easy to pickup and the learning curve was onlychallenging for one day.

“REVOLUTION is really innovative andthe joystick is very comfortable. It’s theway all control systems will probably goin the years ahead.”
