Accident at RacecourseThe Ambulance Brigade received a call on Monday afternoon to proceed to Allora, where an accident had occurred on the racecourse. The bearers immediately left with the motor, but found that a heavy fall of rain had taken place which made the roads very bad to travel on. On arrival at Allora the bearers found Mr. Fred Lancaster, of Warwick, suffering from a crushed knee. It appears that Lancaster was riding Oplet in the Friendly Societies’ Handicap when the horse swerved. The result was that the rider was jammed against a post and the knee crushed.

However, with great pluck, Lancaster finished the race and came in second. The Ambulance rendered first aid, and the patient was conveyed to the Warwick General Hospital, which was reached at 7 o’clock that evening.Warwick Examiner and Times 16/9/1914A Patriotic ParsonThe Rev. H. P. Hare, Methodist minister of Mount Morgan and formerly of Allora, offered to serve as a military chaplain with the expeditionary forces, but finding that there was no chance of being accepted, he resigned his position as a minister and offered himself as a private. He passed the medical inspection, and having been accepted, goes into training at Enoggera.

ALLORA(From our own correspondent)After a time of silence, while the rain is musically pattering on the shingles, I write to let you know that I am still in the land of the living and moving about; and the more I move, the more pleased I am to be a witness to the far-seeing words spoken by the late Rev. John Dunmore Lang to

me on Mount Allora in the year 1853, when he said that I would see those beautiful lands dotted with farmer’s homesteads; at that time the only dwelling was a shepherd’s hut on the southern slope of Mount Allora, and now we have a very promising township spreading in all directions.Warwick Argus 14/9/1889(The Allora correspondent for the Warwick Argus was, in 1889 and for many years, that old Allora pioneer, Mr. Edward Anderson)

ALLORA SHOW SOCIETY NEWSAfter our recent AGM we welcome our new assistant treasurer Caroline Ridgway. We also commend Mr. Ted Cowley for consenting to be our new patron. We have some ambitious projects for infrastructure in our 5 year plan and are joining representatives from other clubs, who use the showgrounds, to form a grants committee. In this way we hope we have a better chance of securing funding for these projects. Our aim is to upgrade our facilities to make them even more attractive and functional for all.As you may know the Allora Showgrounds is a hive of activity almost all year round with not only the local community activities but outside groups who feel Allora has what they require. Bookings are being made a number of years ahead. As our popularity grows, so grows the need to update and expand. To this end we are aiming to install an amenities block on the eastern side of the grounds, with facilities for the disabled, to help with the volume of people who are now using that area of the grounds. We have also had many requests to erect a covered arena, so are attempting to follow through with this also. This will help many functions, where for varied

reasons, be better suited and will also mean less postponementsdue to inclement weather. As we attract more clubs and visitors to Allora, we achieve flow ons to maintaining and hopefully growing our businesses and our local economy as a whole. Now what’s coming up? This weekend the Allora Kennel Club will be host to 5 dog shows, commencing on Friday 12th to Sunday 14th. The Show Society is catering all weekend. A

Street Stall will also be run over the three days, on site. Hot on the heels of this will be the Goomburra Stampede country music festival. We are catering all week but Friday 19th through to Sunday 21st we believe will be the busiest. The following week we have sheepdog trials on Friday 26th & Saturday 27th which again finds the show society catering. So, our wonderful volunteers, if you have a couple of hours to spare during the next couple of weeks, or can do some cooking for us, we would greatly appreciate whatever assistance you can give us.Just one last note, this month’s Show Society Meeting is being postponed until 25th September, at 7.30pm.

Warriors Claim Third ‘A’ Grade Premiership GloryHistory was made Sunday afternoon at Toowoomba’s Clive Berghofer Stadium around 5.00 pm when the full time hooter sounded to signal the end of the 2014 & 95th Toowoomba Rugby League Grand Final. Local league team the Wattles ‘Warriors’ first graders leading the Gatton ‘Hawks’ 36 – 12 as the siren wailed for the last time this season.Wattles supporters rose as one to recognise the dominance of their green & gold heroes, capping a season that will rate into the future as among Wattles greatest ever. The Luke Duggan coached team ran onto the field on twenty-four occasions this year, in three pre-season trials including the Barrett Family Shield, eighteen Toowoomba Rugby League fixture matches, the Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy Final, a major semi-final & the 2014 Grand Final, winning all but two games.Wattles 2014 A Grade premiers led so capably by outstanding halfback Matt Duggan have filled an historic niche in the fabric of Wattles 49 year history, aside with the ‘Warriors’ other first grade premiership winning teams of 1970 & 1997.“It was a great way to end the season” said Coach Duggan, “to get the job done in the style they did was very pleasing.” “We didn’t have a bad player on Sunday, all year we have talked about completing sets and building pressure and we did that yesterday and reaped the benefits.” The Coaches younger brother Matt Duggan joined the late Mick Gleeson & Steve Miles as A Grade Captains to lead Wattles A Grade teams to premiership glory. Duggan has had a glittering season, and scored an amazing 249 points in twenty matches. “It was a great to win, and it was great to do it with the bunch of fellows we have this year” beamed Duggan, “it was probably the best we have played all year.”Club President Aaron Scheid, who also locked the scrum for the A Grade Premiers on Sunday, said he was exceptionally proud of the team’s dedication throughout the season, “the A Graders are a very professional outfit and they showed that on Sunday in the biggest arena of the year.” “Wattles have had a great year on and off the field in 2014, Sunday was worth all the tough times, but it has all happened due to the commitment of all connected with the club and our wonderfully supportive community” said the club Chairman.Brilliant centre Joel Koina notched a hat trick of touch downs in a 25 minute period of the second half, his outstanding afternoon was a key component in Wattles Grand Final success earning

him the prestigious John McDonald Medal as the “Player of the Match”. He has certainly showed his ability in 2014 scoring 22 tries from nineteen matches. It was a courageous effort by

Koina given he sustained a concerning shoulder injury six minutes into the game. He was on field for the duration, he and his brothers Mitch & Brod a family trio in the team’s success.Wattles kick started the scoreboard when five-eight Brodie Ciesiolka ran on to an off load by galloping front-rower Pat Manley and raced down the Grandstand touch line beating two defenders to score in the corner. The seed for the try was planted with the Manley burst, Ciesiolka allowing Wattles a 4 – 0 lead after eight minutes.Wattles lead was short lived though, Gatton star fullback Steve Franciscus split the defence minutes later sending his skipper Aaron Werth away to score under the goal posts. Halfback Jason Willmot converted to have the ‘Hawks’ ahead 6 – 4.The ‘Hawks’ could easily crossed for another four-pointer minutes later but for a try-saving tackle by seasoned winger Tim Hentschel.Midway through the half Wattles gathered possession from a Gatton goal line drop out, with forwards Pat Manley, his front-row brother Xavier Manley & Aaron Scheid steaming towards the ‘Hawks’ try line, before Ryan Duggan took an inside ball from his brother Matt Duggan and split the defence to score Wattles second touchdown.

Matt Duggan converted and Wattles eased ahead on the scoreboard 10 – 6 seventeen minutes prior to half time.Ryan Duggan shut down a near Gatton try in the 28th minute, before Matt Duggan and centre Jamie Dodt came within a whisker of adding Wattles’ tries. In the shadow of half time hard running forward Mitch Koina crashed over the try line, held up but the ball fell loose. The Wattles machine was wound to trigger point but at least four scoring opportunities late in the half slid by with no result, both sides heading to the dressing sheds for the break with the Minor Premiership winning ‘Warriors’ still leading 10 – 6. Wattles mentor Luke Duggan was no doubt very aware of the ‘Hawks’ famous second half fight backs. Their second breath had denied Wattles a Grand Final run last year, and had bumped Warwick from last weekend’s TRL Preliminary Final. In prime field position minutes into the second stanza Ryan Duggan was hauled down short of the line, before Matt Duggan fired a long cut out pass to Joel Koina who cantered over untouched to score, & with the conversion allowed a 16 – 6 lead.Second-rower Conor Swinton’s bruising defence brought a Gatton rush to a halt, before Wattles back line flexed and launched Joel Koina in for his second try.Matt Duggan converted for his side to lead 22 – 6 and the balance of the game tipped decisively Wattles way. Duggan signalled to the posts after a penalty awarded by Referee Dan Ryan, guiding the ball over successfully to extend Wattles’ lead to 24 – 6 in the 52nd minute.Duggan was dealt a forearm in a tackle minutes later as tempers started to flare, but the 2014 Toowoomba Rugby League ‘Player of the Year’ calmly booted the resulting penalty

goal and Wattles edged further ahead 26 – 6, with 23 minutes remaining in the game. The ‘Hawks’ were reduced to twelve men in the 63rd minute after a brawl broke out that saw Daniel Marsh sin binned and Wattles Pat Manley put on report. From a scrum packed on the twenty metre line immediately after, Matt Duggan off loaded to Joel Koina who sprinted down the touch line, stepped around fullback Franciscus and scored in the corner. Wattles now led with Matt Duggan’s conversion from the sideline 32 – 6. Gatton improved the look of the score line when their gutsy

Wattles winger Robbie Moore celebrates scoring a try in the final minute of his sides Grand Final victory over the Gatton ‘Hawks’ on Sunday.

Wattles centre Joel Koina, who scored three tries in his sides premiership victory on Sunday, after receiving the ‘John McDonald Medal’ from former International representative John McDonald after being named ‘Man of the

Match’ for the 2014 Grand Final.

Matt Duggan, Wattles A Grade halfback & Captain and the 2014 Toowoomba Rugby League ‘Player of the Year’ hoist the ‘Hutchies Cup’ after leading his side to the Wattles

Rugby League Club’s third first grade premiership.

back-rower Dom Haak charged over to score, to have the ‘Hawks’ trailing 12 – 32.It was too little to late though for the ‘Hawks’, Wattles exercising control over the game as the final minutes ticked by.However, in the final minute of play Matt Duggan played another ace card when he put a superbly placed kick into the ingoal for winger Robbie Moore to gather and score. Wattles 36 (Joel Koina 3, Brodie Ciesiolka, Ryan Duggan, Robbie Moore tries; Matt Duggan 6 goals) defeated Gatton 12 (Steve Franciscus, Dom Haak tries; Jason Willmot 2 goals)Wattles ‘National Farmer’s Warehouse’ 2014 ‘A’ Grade Premiership winning team: 1. Jackson Green, 2. Robbie Moore, 3. Jamie Dodt, 4. Joel Koina, 5. Tim Hentschel, 6. Brodie Ciesiolka, 7. Matt Duggan (c), 8. Xavier manley, 9. Mark Gordon, 10. Pat Manley, 11. Brod Koina, 12. Conor Swinton, 13. Aaron Scheid – 14. Ryan Duggan, 15. Michael Bermingham, 16. Dylan Edneter, 17. Mitch Koina. Coach: Luke Duggan. And so ends another chapter in Wattles history, the club soon

to step into their fiftieth year in 2015.Wattles will celebrate their club’s 2014 achievements this Saturday evening with their Annual Banquet & Presentation Function at the Allora Community Hall from 6.00 pm.For further information contact Alana Frizzell (0402 069 967)or Jaimie McMillan (0410 574 839).
