KNOW OF SOMEONE WHO IS ILL?

Post members should notify Chaplain Laban Miller at 715-874-5080 with the names of members who are ill, and Auxiliary members need to notify Sunshine Chairman Mary Wheeler at 715-832-3694 (note new phone number for the Wheelers).

FROM YOUR AUXILIARY PRESIDENT Hope everyone had a very Happy Valentine’s day. The Chicken Dinner was a great meal for this holiday evi-denced by the large crowd that night. Seems like we were just at the Christmas Party, and now we into March. ALSO in March: report to me your HOURS for every-thing you have done this past year NO LATER THAN THE END OF MARCH. If you wish to add to your bar pin, you must report those hours to me. I look forward to once again handing out lots of bars and pins. Anything you do for a Veteran (other than your own Veteran) counts. On a separate sheet also count community service hours and everything you have done for the Unit. Include your mile-age and the amount you spent on supplies and donations. ALL CHAIRMAN reports are to be in by the end of March also. I will add the hours together for the year end report at Spring Conference. These reports are sent to State Auxilia-ry and to Department Chairmen. Hours and donations are added together and reported at State Convention. Then a representative goes before Congress to report on all of the time and donations of members of the AMERICAN LE-GION and the AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY. I encourage you to bring your report on hours and do-nations to the meeting on March 20. Supper starts at 6 and meeting at 7 pm. We missed our January meeting be-cause of weather, and the February meeting ended when the power went out (transformer failure in the area.) The

members finished supper by cell phone light! March is also the Post and Unit Birthday party at which we announce our Auxiliary Member of the Year. Members of the committee to pick this year’s Auxiliary Member of the Year are KAYE OLSON, NIKKI HOLTHAUS and ROSEANNE WINRICH, the last 3 winners. [Please note that last month the newsletter writer misquoted Presi-dent Nancy. Roseanne Winrich, not Rosanne Hartung, was a recent winner.] Past President CHRYS PORTER is also on the committee. Any member with suggestions for Auxiliary Member of the Year should approach one of these ladies with your suggestions. March is also when we all start looking for new officers, so keep that in mind and bring suggestions to the meeting. District 10 SPRING CONFERENCE will be in River Falls on April 8th starting at 8 am. Let me know if you plan to go as registration must be in by end of March. COUNTY COUNCIL will be April 22nd here at the hall, with Unit 53 serving brunch. The new activity director at the VETERANS HOME is really getting into party mode for all holidays. PLEASE contact me to find out when Unit 53 is scheduled to visit and entertain the Veterans, and please contact me to SIGN UP to help serve the Veterans and help them have a few hours of enjoyment and entertainment. Sad news on the passing of Jacque Skaaland Feb. 15. Jacque had been a member since 2009. Condolences to Judy Walters and all of Jacque’s family. Nancy Randen, Unit 53 President

More information will follow on this committee in the next Bugle. The Committee Chair is Judy Walters. Other members include Jane Dale, Gloria Hochstein, Chrys Porter, and Nancy Randen. The new officers were installed at the June 17 Auxiliary meeting. We began the meeting with social time at 6:00 pm, supper at 6:30, and meeting at 7:00 pm. That schedule works well because even if the meeting runs long, we are still finished and headed home by shortly after 9 pm. So, if you haven't been to a general meeting for a while, please join us on July 15 for a delicious meal and to partake in the business and camaraderie of Unit 53. Our meetings have become quite amiable, and we have several new faces. Membership update: A few of you still need to pay your 2013 dues! With 215 members, we are SO close to making our goal of 224. Please pay your dues by sending your $25 check to me as soon as you read this. We are still looking for more helpers for Camo Quilting, being held every other Wednesday during the summer. We will also be sewing tote bags to sell in order to raise money to send the camo shower totes to deployed women. We can use help to sew, but also to measure, pin, mark, and trim quilts and totes. Everyone is welcome, and we have a good time with plenty of entertaining conversation. In July, we are meeting on these Wednesdays: July 3, 17, and 31.

AUXILIARY MARCH MEMBERSHIP NEWS The 2017 ALA membership drive: Unit 53 is at 61% with 166 members paid up for 2017, out of the 271 goal set for us by the Auxiliary. By the way, the 271 number is 70 over the total number of members we had for 2016. But we just have to do the best we can to add members and to renew existing members. Dis-trict 10 is in 3rd place with 72%. So, if you haven’t paid your dues or those of your juniors yet, you can send your dues to the address at the end of this article. (Make check out to American Legion Auxiliary.) Unit 53’s dues are still $25 for senior members (18 years old and over) and $3 for junior members (girls under 18).

FREE FIRST YEAR FOR eligible FEMALE VETERANS AND ACTIVE DU-TY MILITARY WOMEN who have not yet joined the American Legion Auxil-iary. Female veterans can join by sending a completed Auxiliary Mem-ber Application and a copy of your DD214. Active duty women need to send just the completed Auxiliary Member Application to address at end of this article. Note: those who joined in previous years under this program do have to pay 2017 dues. LEGION & AUXILIARY MEMBERS: Sign up your daughters, granddaugh-ters, and great granddaughters. And sign up female friends who are wives, sisters, mothers, daughters, grand-daughters, or great granddaughters of current American Legion members or of veterans now deceased.

BENEFITS of membership are that we come together in volunteerism, pat-riotism, and dedication to veterans, young people and communities in the world's largest women’s patriotic ser-vice organization. Unit 53 of Eau Claire appreciates your presence and contributions in so many ways. To-gether we distribute poppies, help at Friday night Bingo, write cards to ser-vice personnel, offer Stand Downs for veterans, visit Dove HealthCare, pro-vide meals for veterans in Chippewa, and enjoy the fellowship of our meetings: every third Monday at the Legion Hall. Auxiliary Membership application forms are available at the American Legion Hall, or from Membership Chair Gloria Hochstein at 1320 Badger Ave. Eau Claire, WI 54701; or call 715-835-4666 or 715-523-4666; or email [email protected]

FEBRUARY DOVE BINGO The Bingo Party for the residents of Dove West Healthcare was a great success!. On February 9, seventeen volunteers from the Legion and the Auxiliary helped the residents of Dove West have a wonderful day.

We had a volunteer to help each resident play Bingo, and we had two people to pass out Bingo treats for the residents when they got Bingos.

Thank you all so much for giving the residents of Dove an enjoyable afternoon.

Can Elderly Scams Be Prevented?

“Old people with money.” Scam artists relentlessly prey on them. Why are the elderly more suscepti-ble and more likely to become victims of a scam? The elderly are vulnerable to scams because they tend to be too trusting, gullible, live alone and don't have someone watching over their finances. Loneliness also plays a role. Elders are often grate-ful to have someone to talk to – not suspecting that the "nice man" on the phone may be preying on them.

Can anything be done about elderly scams? "Many of us have a parent, friend or neighbor who would benefit from a friendly reminder that seniors are prime targets for scam artists. We can help prevent them from losing their money, their dignity and their sense of security," said Ken Hunter, president and CEO of the Council of Better Business Bureaus. Caregivers can take some steps and identify red flags to help protect their elderly parents from scam artists and fraud against elders, according to the Better Business Bureau. These include:

*Get involved with seniors' financial decisions as much as possible, especially when managing per-sonal finances has become a burden.

*Never allow your elderly parent to give out (or at least warn them against it) personal banking infor-mation, credit card numbers or social security num-bers to someone who has called. Popular scams include promising information on new health mira-cle products, a charitable donation, or confirmation of a sweepstakes.

*If a salesperson will not provide written infor-mation about his or her company-- including the company's name, address and telephone, do busi-ness with someone else.

* If someone calls from a "government agency" re-questing money, ask for a certified letter on an offi-cial letterhead.

*Visit the homes of elderly relatives regularly. Ask about phone call they've received (con artists tend to develop relationships with their lonely victims and prey on their need for conversation.). And watch for a full mailbox. Large numbers of mailings from promotion companies could indicate that the elderly person is on a "sucker list."

*Tell your parent never to hire someone who shows up at their door. If they are told their plumb-ing needs to be fixed, or the roof needs repaired, the scammer may take money, but never do the work. · Tell your parents never to make an "on-the-spot" decision. If the person says you have to take the offer immediately or you will miss the oppor-tunity, it is likely a scam. Legitimate companies do not pressure people to act without taking the time to look into the deal.

*Avoid investments that promise huge profits with no risk. "High-return" investments are not guaran-teed and legitimate companies will tell consumers about possible risks involved. · Put the senior's phone number on the National Do Not Call registry by phoning 1 (888) 382-1222 or visiting www.donotcall.gov (this will help to limit phone calls from telemarketers.)

*Consider whether you memory/decision impaired loved one should have access to a personal tele-phone.

Fraud against older Americans is a serious problem affecting thousands every year. These tips can help prevent your aging parent from falling victim to scams.

RACK UP RED, WHITE, & BLUE POINTS Earn points for WEARING patriotic colors to Auxiliary meetings. Those with the most points at the end of the year will win prizes. Wearing the colors will give you points as follows: RED = 2 points WHITE = 3 points BLUE = 4 points RED, WHITE, AND BLUE together = 10 points AUXILIARY EMBLEM and/or NAMETAG = 5 points. We’re having fun but also showing respect for the colors under which our Military is fighting, and demonstrating respect for all who have fallen before them, and exhibiting pride in our American Legion Auxiliary membership.

CELL PHONES for SOLDIERS is still an active program. Old cell phones are ei-ther taken apart for parts and metals and new-er phones are adapted for new use. For each phone turned in, 2.5 hours of time is put on phone cards for deployed soldiers to use. Any soldiers needing cards can request them, and those who are mailing letters or packages to an APO address can get cards from our local PAC MAIL store to send. If you have a junk drawer full of old phones, bring them to the post, and I will turn them in. I do not want the chargers. For more information go to www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com

HHOOMMEE SSEERRVVIICCEE PPRROOGGRRAAMM The purpose of the Home Service Program is to support veterans in VA Medical Centers, the Wisconsin Veterans Homes, nursing homes and residing in the community by volunteers doing projects IN THEIR OWN HOMES to benefit these veterans. NO money or hours volunteered shall count in the Home Service program if it involves members of the volunteer’s own family. Some examples of home service are: sewing articles for hospitalized veterans, such as welcome totes, bed shoes, gowns, bibs, lap robes; baking cookies, candies, ect. for hospitalized veterans; preparing meals or shopping for homebound veterans. Please note that hours spent distributing poppies cannot be counted as Home Service. All Unit members, including Juniors, are eligible to

participate in the Home Service Program. Hospital volunteers are eligible to participate in Home Service programs for hours spent in activities other than regular hospital service. Each Home Service volunteer is responsible for reporting her hours to the Home Service Chairman who is in charge of reporting the hours annually to Department. In case of any discrepancy, the decision of Unit President and the Unit VA&R Chairman is final. A Home Service Pin is awarded for 50 hours and hour bars are given for 100, 300, 500, 1000 hours and each 1000 hours successive of certified Home Service.
