Weekly Publication for Middle School Parents

Dear Parents:

Your active involvement in Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTCs) this past week was greatly

appreciated. Attendance was high and we were pleased to meet so many parents. As the

school year continues, we hope the connections made during the PTCs continue and

strengthen communication between home and school.

Today we celebrated Filipiniana and had a fantastic time enjoying the barrio fiesta lunch,

dance presentations and musical performances. It was fantastic to see so many students

wearing their PCC shirts and national costumes. The Philippine Cultural Club has done a

commendable job in planning this event and is to be applauded.

The October holiday starts on Monday, October 25 and classes resume on Wednesday,

November 3. After the past twelve weeks the students and teachers have earned a welldeserved break. Enjoy the holiday!

Dengue prevention

We aim to keep the mosquito population in school to an absolute minimum with regular fogging of the premisesand spot checks of areas where water may gather. There are inevitably, however, some mosquitoes in the sur-rounding areas so it is important that everyone takes their own personal measures to protect themselves frommosquito bites. Please see the following advice based on Department of Health recommendations.

DENGUE

Dengue is a concern for everyone living in the Philippines and we should all be vigilant. We hope that the follow-ing information will help you to avoid this illness.

What is dengue fever? What is dengue hemorrhagic fever?

Dengue fever is a flu-like illness spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.Dengue hemorrhagic fever is a severe, sometimes fatal, complication of dengue fever.

Protect yourself against Dengue with the following system:

Search and destroy the breeding places of dengue-causing mosquitoes which may be found in old tires, coconuthusks, gutters, discarded bottles, flower vases and other vessels that can hold stagnant water. These containersare good breeding places of female AEDES AEGYPTI mosquitoes, day biting female mosquitoes which are responsi-ble for transmitting the dengue virus to human beings. These mosquitoes like to rest in dark corners of your homeso keep mosquito nets closed to avoid letting them in.

Self protection measures include wearing long sleeves or long pants, or using mosquito repellant to protect your-self from mosquito bites. Children, especially the small ones who are at home, should wear long pants or pyjamasand long sleeved tops, whenever possible, so that they will not be bitten by mosquitoes. Keep mosquito screensand nets closed as much as possible.

Seek early consultation; visit the doctor when a person exhibits the early signs of dengue.

Dengue fever usually starts suddenly with:

a high fever muscle and joint painrash nausea and vomiting andsevere headache loss of appetitepain behind the eyes

The severity of the joint pain has given dengue the name "breakbone fever." Nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetiteare common. A rash usually appears 3 to 4 days after the start of the fever. The illness can last up to 10 days, butcomplete recovery can take as long as a month.

Most dengue infections result in relatively mild illness, but some can progress to dengue hemorrhagic fever. Signs

and symptoms of dengue hemorrhagic fever include:

Bleeding from the nose, mouth, and gumsBruising

Dengue hemorrhagic fever is fatal in about 5 percent of cases, mostly among children and young adults. Promptmedical treatment is necessary in all cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Please note that fogging kills only the adult infected mosquito but not the larvae which can also carry the virus.

ISM is excited to be hosting this years ISTA Middle School Theatre Festival! The International Schools Thea-tre Association (ISTA) facilitates two MS festivals each year in Asia, which provide an amazing opportunity

for international students from around the world to engage in new theatrical experiences and to developskills that will deepen their passion for performance. As a school, ISM has been a proud supporter and par-ticipator of ISTA, and we now have the opportunity to give the participants an experience they will neverforget! We will be hosting the first ever Musical Theatre ISTA festival, and we are very excited about wel-

coming other international students to the Philippines and to our wonderful school.

The ISM ISTA Festival will take place November 19-21 (Friday to Sunday), and will involve as many as 100students from other countries, as well as our own ISM participants. As with any event, the whole ISM com-munity has the opportunity to get involved in this Middle School event. The most significant way for the ISMcommunity to get involved is to provide housing for the visiting students. If you are able to host some stu-dents, you may contact the ATAC Office and/or the Fine Arts Office at [email protected] and/[email protected] . Most guests will arrive on November 18th and will depart on either November 21st or

Swimathon 2010 Saturday November 6.

All ISM Community Members, Students, Parents, Teachers & ISM Alumni are invited to participate in the Sail-

fish Swimathon on Saturday 6th of November. It is an event for all swimming abilities. Come take part and

have some healthy fun.

Elementary school Swim 2:30-3:30 P.M.

Middle School Swim 3:30-4:30 P.M.

ISM Adults-(Parents, Teachers, Alumni) Swim 4:30-5:30 P.M.

High School 5:30-7:30 P.M.
