“Analytics Cathedral” - Dr Usama Fayyad (former Yahoo! chief data officer and executive vice president of Research & Strategic Data Solutions; Chairman, co-Founder & CTO of ChoozOn Corporation)

It is very satisfying for the AAI to have been identified as a leading Institute within an Australian University, UTS for their research and contemporary work in the field of BIG DATA by the Australian Government Department of Finance and Deregulation.

“In Australia, the University of Technology Sydney has opened the Advanced Analytics Institute (AAI), a research institute that focuses on data and analytics science as well as evidence-driven decision making research. The AAI brings together researchers with a variety of backgrounds and aims to support and mentor generations of high-calibre analytics graduates. It has worked with a number of organisations and Australian Government departments including AMP, IBM, SAS, Microsoft Research, Nokia, Westpac, the ATO and DHS (Centrelink).”

On April 2013, Dr Usama Fayyad visited the cathedral style Blackfriars office of AAI. He enjoyed the ambiance of the office and commented he had never seen similar arrangements in any other places. He called the AAI office an “Analytics Cathedral”, and appreciated the AAI’s RED Analytics business model by focusing on high quality Research, high calibre analyst Education, and high impact Development in advanced Analytics. Dr Fayyad generously offered his advice and support to the AAI strategic development.

Behavior Computing: Modeling, analysis, mining and decision

Edited by Longbing Cao, Philip S. YuPublisher: Springer

The field of behavior computing opens up the opportunity for breakthrough advances, discoveries and advanced knowledge to come from outside of social sciences. Behavior Computing effectively contextualizes statistical and machine learning tools in a series of 23 very interesting chapters embracing models, scenarios and case studies thematically connected with behavior computing. The end result is a highly presentable book for a wide-ranging audience inclusive of final-year undergraduates or postgraduate students. However, the book requires familiarity with machine learning algorithms and analysis of large datasets and may just prove to be a catalyst for social scientists to leave behind existing pastures and embrace the field of behaviour computing.Longbing Cao is the director of UTS Advanced Analytics Institute and a professor of Information Technology. Behaviour Computing is his sixth book.

New projects with Australian Taxation Office

Following the pilot success of the previous project at ATO, Professor Longbing Cao and his team on government analytics recently received two new contract research projects from the Australian Taxation Office. A team of five AAI researchers, including Dr Zhigang Zheng, Mr David Wei, Dr Allen Lin, Ms Wei Cao and Mr Chunming Liu, are now working at the ATO Sydney office closely with the ATO domain experts and business leaders. Professor Cao and his team have been working with ATO business experts and data analysts on an in-depth understanding of taxpaying behaviours to strengthen ATO compliance. New project for improving the University’s intake and marketing

Professor Longbing Cao and his team on educational data mining have recently received another project from UTS to conduct deep data analytics on the University’s admissions centre’s data and relevant information for improving student intake and better marketing. The AAI team on educational data mining, including Dr Yuming Ou, Mr Jinjiu Li, Mr Mu Li and Mr Chunming Liu, has been researching on learning behaviour analysis, academic and risk analysis, early prediction of academic risk, sentiment analysis on educational data for improving student needs and learning performance since 2009. Two systems are now being used at UTS. Professor Cao is also the Chair of the IEEE Task Force on Educational Data Mining.

Project extension with Nokia Research Centre in Finland

Based on their performance and research progress, Associate Professor Jian Zhang and his team on 3D image processing have secured new research funding for 2013 after the research collaboration with Nokia in 2012. The AAI team on 3D image processing and matching between the high quality density and low quality 3D images made substantial progress in 2012. This year, they will aim to develop new technology and propose 3D image processing workshop in conjunction to IEEE international conference on Computer Vision. This research is supported by Nokia research for future mobile applications.

AAI Seminar Series

The AAI Seminar series is attracting a strong degree of interest from internal and external stakeholders. A summary of some recent presentations is provided below.

Adversarial Knowledge Discovery

Professor David Skillicorn, School of Computing, Queen's University, Canada

Professor Skillicorn spoke on conventional knowledge discovery, models are built to maximise the fit with given data. In adversarial settings, where the interests of those doing the modeling and some of those being modeled are not aligned, maximising fit is a terrible strategy because it can be anticipated. Knowledge discovery techniques need to be built from the ground up in a different way.

Trace-Based Reasoning: Combining Case-Based Reasoning and Traces to Reason on Experiences

Amélie Cordier, Associate Professor, University of Lyon, France

Associate Professor Cordier

presented on the emerging concept of Trace-Based Reasoning. Trace-Based Reasoning is an Artificial Intelligence methodology for solving various problems. The specificity of Trace-Based Reasoning is that it uses traces (i.e. sequential records of events) as a rich knowledge source for the reasoning process.

Knowledge Discovery for Computational Intelligence Research@ UC (KDCIR)

Professor Dharmendra Sharma, Faculty of Education, Science, Technology and Mathematics, University of Canberra

The presentation summarised KDCIR research motivated by problems from optimisation, planning, training – performance modelling in elite sports (cycling), obesity / diabetes modelling, renal transplantation, stress / depression modelling, education analytics and cyber security.

A Fast Semi Definite Approach to Solving Binary Quadratic Problems

Dr Chunhua Shen , School of Computer Science, The University of Adelaide

This pesentation highlighted computer vision problems can be formulated as binary quadratic programs (BQPs). Two classic relaxation methods are widely used for solving BQPs, namely, spectral methods and semidefinite programming (SDP), each with their own advantages and disadvantages.

Professor Piccardi's Lecture Series

From March to May 2013 Professor Piccardi delivered a series of lectures on statistical pattern recognition at the AAI. Weekly lectures included Recalls of probability theory, Density estimation, Dimensionality reduction, and Bayesian classification.
