As Secretary of State, it has beenmy privilege to meet teens whohave a desire to change our world. They inspire their communitiesand influence peers and adultswith the sincerity of their mes-sage. In January of 2018, 16- and17-year-olds in Illinois weregranted the ability to becomeorgan/tissue donors.
As the state’s advocate for organ/tissue donation, thisprogram is important to me because my own family hasbeen the recipient of the life-changing gift of organdonation. Each year, I am told countless stories of how thegift of donation saved a life. I am proud that 16- and 17-year-olds will now be able to act as donors and activistsfor organ/tissue donation.
A single person’s donation can improve the quality of lifefor up to 25 individuals. More than 6.4 million people in ourstate are registered as organ/tissue donors, but sadly thereare 4,700 individuals who are waiting for their gift of life. Each year, more than 300 people die waiting for a trans-plant.
I encourage you to make a difference and become part ofthe Secretary of State’s Organ/Tissue Donor Registry byvisiting www.LifeGoesOn.com. Please share informationabout the program with your friends and family. Your voicematters.
Sincerely,
Jesse WhiteIllinois Secretary of State
