On Thursday 2nd February, a camera crew from a company named Brook Lapping came to film part of a show called Hot Research for Teachers’ TV (NTL 803, Telewest 240, Sky 592, Freeview 47) which looks at research that is useful and helpful. Congratulations, you are Kate. Lucky you, you take up most of the program frolicking on the beach in sweaty tank tops, frolicking in the jungle in sweaty tank tops and flirting with the men in sweaty tank tops. That’s what I call plot line…

Loyal and trustworthy? Managed to keep in great condition since landing? No aversion to excess petting/stroking? You’re Vincent. You may be a mere dog but that lack of opposable thumbs makes you the best character on the Island. Nice one, fancy a bone?

Actually , after a l l that excitement I think I’ll have to go and watch the series again… I’ll hate every second of course. I still think its sh*t. Obviously…*cough*

Having a backed up

argument is a skill all

universities encourage.

1967 , monarch of Iran , Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi (RIP) sets up the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran which later builds the Tehran Nuclear Research Centre, planning to build 23 power stations with the USA by 2000. Then comes 1979, the so-called “Islamic” revolution, and total destruction of the plans. Scientists fled or were killed, and 25 years later, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad becomes President. Background out of the

way, now here is the juicy bit. He denies access to UN inspectors; Europe, USA and the world over are in uproar after his comments stating Israel should be “wiped off the map”. The “President” claims it all to be peaceful and that it is illegal and against his religion to develop nuclear weapons. Illegal? Against his religion? In my eyes, this is hypocritical coming from a man who fails to bring into account the allegations against him; that he participated heavily

in the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis, assassinations of Kurdish dissidents in Austria, and executions of political prisoners in the Evin prison in Tehran. After torturing his own people, why would he stop attacking his enemies? Do you really think a government like this would stay true to its word? I think not.

“Lost” personality truly fits your own.

Desperately want to help but find that no one listens to your cries for attention? Segregated from the group? Unbelievably good-looking?

You are Boone, I won’t insult him as it may decrease the chances of our relationship working out… Wish you could leap off that pedestal everyone’s put you on? Bit handy with a needle and some bamboo? Got a voice like a weasel on helium?

Yes, that’s right, you’re Jack. It’s Mr Nice Guy, isn’t he great, he knows how to sew people up! But I bet there are a whole load of meaningful thoughts going on behind that macho exterior… I bet they go something like this “Hey, I really fancy Kate”. Deep. NEXT.

Strong woman with a mysterious past? Trapped between wanting to do good and wanting to sleep with the bad guy? Trapped between not knowing how to act and being an idiot?

And so, the first series of “Lost” draws to it’s dramatic, some might say futile / pointless, conclusion. It’s certainly been a rollercoaster ride hasn’t it? Well… there were a few polar bears and an irritating little man got blown up by some dynamite but lets be honest. It was crap. In fact if we’re continuing with the fairground metaphor, watching “Lost” is like a ride on the carousel; seems like a great idea at the time, you can bet a lot of money went into those painted horses and for the first three minutes everyone forgets about the candyfloss stuck to their hands… ultimately however, it leaves you feeling nauseated, confused and headed to the burger van. But I never was very good with rides… Anyway retreating from the fairground, one of the important bits about “Lost” would appear to be its diverse, and of course in no way clichéd, group of characters. Obviously everyone has their favourites and despite finding most of them bone numbingly dull / irritating /shallow... I do like quite a lot of them, I say a lot of them, maybe a couple…or one…but that’s not the point. I’ve decided to jump on the bandwagon and devise a simple test to find out which

in the FA Cup for 85 years. (wow now there is some stats for you). Charlton also booked a place in the next round by beating (some might say) a less favoured team Brentford 3 – 1. The Addicks were dominant from the start, shown by a crisp finish by Bent on the 3rd minute and never seemed like slipping up against the League one side, even though they did manage to get a late consolation. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s conqueror Bolton drew with the Hammers, forcing a replay. Outside football, the Winter Olympics has started this week in Italy. I have to admit that the British hopes of winning any gold medals are very low and yet again those Americans are taking everything. But let us look at the bright

side; Team GB have won their first medal, a respectful silver by Rudman in skeleton. To those who don’t know what skeleton is, it is much like Bobsleigh but you do it solo and you don’t have to be inside a tub. To those who don’t know what Bobsleigh is then, ermm well I don’t blame you because not many people follow that sport anyway. And oh ya, India have beaten Pakistan in the fourth one-day international to win the series.

King Kong, probably the most anticipated movie of 2005 from its ground breaking action sequences to its unique quality of digital enhancement, is greatly admired by us all. Director Peter Jackson really has proven himself as the lord of the blockbusters with this extravagant re-master of the 1933 epic original by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack. Jackson has used Cooper's vision as his blueprint, and has expanded upon it greatly without changing the essential floorplan. There are also a few direct homage’s, including a reference to Fay Wray being unavailable for Carl Denham's film because she was "making something for Cooper,”. The synopsis sounds much the same, but the experience is wholly different. We begin our epic journey in the Big Apple, were we meet Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts), a struggling actress who finds herself out of work with no means to pay for a meal. Filmmaker Carl Denham

(Jack Black) is being pursued by his creditors and needs to find a leading actress for his new film so he can set sail before the authorities catch him. Fortunately the two meet, and Ann is soon aboard the “Venture”, heading for “Skull island” a mythical island found on an old map.. There, Ann is kidnapped by the natives and sacrificed to their god, Kong. Instead of killing her, however, the big ape is intrigued by her beauty, and hence the two bond. Eventually, Ann is rescued, Kong is captured, and the action moves to New York City. Breaking free of his manacles on the first night he is being displayed to the public, Kong locates Ann and climbs to the top of the

Empire State Building, where his tragic final stand occurs. However, if there is a flaw in the movie, it is the prolonged 70 minute build up in the beginning, where Jackson allows us to get to know the characters and their backgrounds. He has followed the basic storyline and contextual setting of the 1933 original, containing master recreations of New York in its time of depression, and the infamous “skull island” full of beautifully rendered CGI wild animals, insects and dinosaurs as well as the star of the show King Kong himself. Once the action starts, however, it's difficult to find something more energetic, daring, and touching than King Kong. This is roughly three hours of the best movie-making available today. It's worth every penny that was spent bringing it to the screen. King Kong is overall a richer and more satisfying cinematic experience.

The FA Cup has produced yet another set of exciting matches on the week-end, the peak of them being the clash between the big guns, Man Utd and Liverpool. When the draw for this fifth round match was made, we knew for a fact that this was going to be the game to look forward to. And it certainly didn’t disappoint us with a handful of chances throughout the match, the majority of them falling to Liverpool. So it wasn’t a surprise when Peter Crouch headed home a fantastic cross after 19 minutes giving Liverpool a deserved place in the quarter finals. The 6’7 giant might have had a ‘head’ start against a shorter opponent but he didn’t seem to care less and celebrated the first victory for the Reds over Utd

As teenagers in this day and age, we are slaves to fashion and are very aware of the idealistic body shape enforced by the media. Unfortunately some people are affected by these “pressures of perfection” to devastating extremes. I’m sure there are some of you reading this who made the age old New Years Resolution to eat right and exercise. You may have already broken it (like me) or you may have started working out, cut out the junk food and started a healthy diet. I’m sure you didn’t check the Internet for tips on how to ignore your painful starvation or how to effectively stick your fingers down your throat in order to ‘purge’ after a ‘binge’. Shocked?

The Apple iPod Music Player has taken the market by storm, there’s no need going into any details about it. Have a look round yourself right now, chances are an iPod is not far. With new developments happening from the original idea, such as larger storage space, picture viewing, nano technology, and now video play. It almost seems too difficult for Apple to take the design any further, well guess again. Research on the xPod is well into development, this is the first mobile music player that senses activity and emotion of its user. The concept of the xPod is based on the idea of automating much of the interaction between the actual music player and you, its user. The xPod project

introduces a "smart" music player that learns its user's preferences, emotions and activity, and tailors its music selections accordingly. The device is able to monitor a number of external variables to determine its user's levels of activity, motion and physical states to make an accurate model of the task its user is undertaking at the moment and predict the genre of music that would be appropriate. Some activities the new Pod will analyse include its user’s heart rate – beats per minute – blood flow, the day of the week, the date and time, heat flow, skin condit ions – temperature, moisture levels, and response. The xPod is relying on its user to train the player as to what music is preferred and under what conditions.

After an initial training period, the xPod is able to use its internal algorithms to make an educated selection of the song that would best fit its user's emotion and situation. So far the xPod does a reasonable job of automating music choice for a user's activity, according to it’s developers, Apple. Science- fiction writers have been wrestling with the problem of how computers made of cold s tee l and s i l i con can understand human beings and their emotions... Is science finally bridging the gap in the shape of a pod?

I’m sorry but you should be. There are pro Anorexia and Bulimia websites that contain some of the most distressing things you could ever come across. Their “chants” and “handy tips” that reinforce the “positive” aspects of starving yourself are delusional. There is nothing positive about these disorders. The sites even provide images that are supposed to remind you of the emaciated look you are aiming for. Anorexia and Bulimia are two very serious eating disorders whose victims should be helped not indoctrinated by mindless propaganda. Luckily the majority of the websites and links have been taken down, but if you ever come

across one of these sites, DO NOT ENTER! One in a hundred people die from eating disorders, it may not sound like a lot, but I personally cannot begin to imagine the pain of losing a friend, because of the influence of one person’s stupidity and naivety on such damaging disorders. Love yourself,

What Went Wrong? What Went Wrong? What Went Wrong? What Went Wrong? I speak for all year 13 when I ask “what went wrong”! You’re probably wondering what I am talking about. Well, what I am talking about is the shambolic behaviour of the people in the sixth form common room, namely the current year 12. We all know that the common room is crowded enough as it is and with people littering everywhere, shouting and pushing, it is hard to shift the blame; but what I do know is that it is NOT the year 13 making the mess! I hear the year 12’s saying “it’s not us, its you guys” I think not! How do I know I hear you ask? Well then, let me explain, back in the days when we were the year 12, the common room was a pleasant and vibrant room with a friendly atmosphere, but now it is a hectic, filthy

and congested room ever since the new year 12 joined.

One thing that I fail to understand is why? Why must people dump your sh*t all over the floor? Why must people throw water at each other in the middle of winter (are you crazy?) and why must people shout excessively when bob is standing right next to you? These are the things that are unjustified and uncalled for. Can we change the way we act in order to recreate the pleasant ambience that once existed? Well I think that we can and there are certain measures that we can all take and you know what they are (emphasised repeatedly by Ms Barton).

I would like to finish by suggesting some respectful gestures: 1) When there is a year 13

standing, offer your seat, (Why? There is no reason why)

2) When a year 13 is cold give them your space on the radiator (Why? Because you should respect your elders)

3) When obstructing a year 13, jump out of the way (Why? Because it’s the right thing to do and amusing to watch)

Happy Birthday to All of You!!!!

Put the tomatoes, basil, oregano, salt and pepper in a pan and heat for 10 mins. (You could also add sesame oil and pesto if you are a rich person.) Grill your bread, and slice or grate the cheese. When the bread is nice and toasty, put the tomatoes on top, and then cover that with cheese. Stick it back under the grill until the cheese has melted and then devour! TIP: You might like to be friendly and share this with a friend as 1 can of tomatoes tends to be quite a lot for 1 person, either that or you could put the spare in the fridge!

Has ‘freedom of speechfreedom of speechfreedom of speechfreedom of speech’ become freedom to insultfreedom to insultfreedom to insultfreedom to insult?

No, the cartoon showing Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) wearing a turban shaped like a bomb should not have been pr inted. However, whi lst the demonstrators were well within their rights to protest, they have gone about it the wrong way. The violence of their protesting, has merely further soured relations towards the Muslim community. Yes, the cartoon was hideous and hugely offensive to both Muslims and

Non-Muslims alike. However, so are placards brandishing slogans such as ‘Butcher those who mock Islam’. Freedom of speech is all very well, until it takes away the dignity of another, or is used as a tool for attack, instead of a way to express a valid opinion. The issue is not whether a newspaper had a right to print the cartoon, but whether they should have printed it. It is hard to comprehend why this cartoon was

printed regardless of the fact that such a socially irresponsible act could create uproar. It is inconsiderate stunts like this that threaten our right to freedom of speech. To maintain our right to freedom of speech from complete elimination we need to change our attitudes towards each other and be more considerate in our approach towards freedom of speech.
