The sixth annual Leeston Fete is fast approaching and, as always, promises to be an outstanding day. Taking place on Saturday, April 16th, from 10am it’s a wonderful opportunity for a drive to the township of Leeston, where the High Street will be closed to cars, but open to lots of fun! Last year thousands of people came from Leeston and surrounding areas to enjoy the

Last year’s Fete was a huge success with this year’s expected to bring in an even bigger crowd!

The food choices available are wide and varied. Culinary delights from Mexico, Vietnam, and the Mediterranean, along with seafood and ice creams etc. make decision-making difficult! Numerous local organisations will use the Fete for essential fundraising, as well as to be on hand to provide community information at the event.

day, and this year is already looking like it’ll be even bigger and better. Fete-goers will have an opportunity to enjoy a special entertainment area with live music and there are already more than one hundred stalls planning to attend. There’s bound to be something for everyone as stallholders showcase unique handcrafts, exquisite adults and children's clothing, jewellery, antiques and collectables. Organisers have la id on f ree chi ldren’s entertainment that includes a bouncy castle, face painting, clowns and water walkers, meaning that the junior members of the family are well and truly catered for.

More than 3300 participants from throughout the South Island learnt a little bit more of the Easter message, in a fun filled Easter weekend at Spencer Park. Amongst them were 62 from the Darfield Baptist Youth Group. Eastercamp run by Canterbury Youth Services has been enjoyed by those attending for around twenty years. “Eastercamp focuses on the Easter message from a Christian perspec t ive , ” sa id Sam Sam Sam Sam BroughtonBroughtonBroughtonBroughton, one of the Youth Leaders accompanying the Darfield contingent, “with speakers telling the story of Easter and explaining how it helps us break harmful patterns in our lives, gives us hope that tomorrow can be better than today and that there is a God who loves us and has gone to extraordinary lengths to meet with us.” Afternoons at Camp were filled with volleyball, dodgeball, cricket, cafes and carnival rides. All the food, for camp meals, was catered for, on site. “The Darfield crew had a great

time getting to know one another more deeply and refreshing the purpose for their lives,” Sam added. About 300 volunteers worked

to put the camp together, which wasn’t thwarted this year by bad weather and saw most of those attending already looking forward to the next Eastercamp.

Pam and Lu, who are nurses, have both lost parents to cancer and so this fundraiser is very dear to their hearts. They have decided that the time is right to lop off their locks to raise money for this incredibly worthwhile cause, and to show support for friends currently undergoing treatment. Lu and Pam's team has a fundraising goal of $5,000. To help reach the target, a number of Malvern schools are having wacky hair days during the week of April 4th to 8th, with gold coin donations from students being added to the total. The team has also recently acquired a new member, Dawson GilchristDawson GilchristDawson GilchristDawson Gilchrist, who is bravely

The great shave will take place at the Yello Shack Cafe in Springfield on Saturday, April 9th and the Shave For A Cure team would love to see everyone join them for a fun night. Hairdresser Angela Angela Angela Angela Wengler Wengler Wengler Wengler (nee StaffordStaffordStaffordStafford) will be wielding the clippers. Angela has also offered her services on the night for anyone wanting a (less drastic) haircut! These haircuts will be offered at a discounted price and all proceeds from the door and haircuts will be donated to the cause. Lu and Pam thank their amazing sponsors, without whom their goal of $5,000 would have little or no chance of being reached. For more information regarding Shave For A Cure, check

This month I will be looking at skin health and what we need to do to achieve healthy, glowing, more youthful looking skin.

Have you found yourself trying every skincare product or supplement on the market and still not getting 100% of the results you had hoped for?

What if we consider our skin being a reflection of what is happening on the inside? Our skin requires many nutrients to be healthy, to heal efficiently and to prevent premature ageing. Conversely, dull, lifeless, inflamed or spotty skin means your body simply isn’t getting enough of

these essential vitamins and minerals. Some of these nutrients can be obtained from what we eat, while others are more difficult for our bodies to source or process, and are best supplemented.

Bestow Beauty from Beneath is a multi mineral and vitamin formula designed to provide key nutrients for collagen production, promote enzyme action and help skin cells remain energetic and

regenerate. As an added bonus, it also powerfully supports the body’s immune system and can also help inhibit both viral and bacterial exposure. Essential fatty acids also play a vital role in skin health. In a modern diet these are

often lacking and our bodies are unable to produce them itself - which is a shame, as we need them for healthy skin, hair, nails, wound healing and immunity; to

name but a few! Stress, being run down or unwell, can hinder absorption of EFA’s; taking Bestow Beauty Oil Plus you will be provided with primary and secondary EFA’s. It ensures your body is efficiently processing and absorbing nutrients and

minerals, as well as aiding in improved lipid levels in our skin (hydration). These are just two products from the wonderful range Bestow has to offer, all of

which are available at Bloom Beauty Boutique. You can visit www.bestowbeauty.co.nz to learn more or pop into Bloom and I will be more than

happy to assist. Check in here on the first Friday of each month for more beauty tips and education!

It outlines proposals in the 2016/17 Annual Plan which differ from that proposed in last year’s Long-Term Plan 2015-2025. Proposals for consultation include: • a proposal to standardise

charges for rural water schemes to be more consistent with the district-wide water rate introduced last year

• a proposal for how a new large-scale park for recreation and community use could be funded

• bringing forward work to

widen part of Jones Road, and accelerating footpath extensions.

The Council is proposing to reduce the level of increase in the General Rate from 6% (as forecast in the Long-Term Plan) to 3%. Overall the average rate rise per ratepayer in the 2016/17 year is approximately 4%, which is within the forecast level of less than 5% per year proposed in the Long-Term Plan. Local Heath Minchington - specialising in electrical work and security in Selwyn.

Heath Minchington was born in Darfield, raised in Christchurch, and

moved back to the area several years ago, as his partner is born and

bred here.

Heath has been an electrician for almost twenty years and specialises

in security - everything from alarms and cameras to automated

gates.

Having embraced the Selwyn/Darfield lifestyle, Heath felt it an

opportune me to start up in business and offer his clients the

benefit of his years of experience and experse.

“I like doing a good job to a standard that pleases both myself and

the customer,” Heath commented, “and while being self employed

offers me a li>le more flexibility with my work/life rao, it’s more

about listening to the customer and fulfilling their requirements.

“Client sasfacon is paramount and I am going to enjoy having the

flexibility and authority to bring together a customer’s request. My

business will be fully customer focussed and while I will enjoy

creang a good reputaon for myself and my work, rather than a

company that employs me, I will never lose track of that focus.

“There are of course personal benefits to embarking upon seng up

in business; I’m looking forward to being able to use equipment and

parts that I trust and have confidence in, and I’m also looking

forward to being able to more easily schedule preferred work and

the days that it’s undertaken.

“I’m looking forward to being able to work in the community in

which I live (I currently work in Christchurch) - and to meeng new

people in the district,” Heath concluded.

Looming large on the Darfield skyline is the prominent scaffolding cocooning St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church on the corner of Cardale Street and Telegraph Road. Often referred to as the ‘Blue Church’ the building has been a sanctuary and landmark feature in Darfield for nearly eighty years and is finally being restored to its pre-earthquake glory. The Roman Catholic Church has however not always been the blue, cement clad tribute to gothic architecture seen today. The history of a community parish based in Darfield officially dates back to 1888 but there is strong evidence of a lively Catholic community in Malvern from the 1870’s. The first original church built in Darfield was a modest wooden building which cost £278 to build and £67/8s to furnish. The Church of the Holy Angels was officially opened, debt free in October 1880. The church was built on a two acre section which was donated by Mr MaxwellMaxwellMaxwellMaxwell of Racecourse Hill. Before the church was built, Mass was held in various Roads Board or Railway buildings. Prior to this, the area was serviced infrequently by priests from the Leeston area. The Church of Holy Angel’s following continued to grow over the years and tended to 300 families over a seventy mile stretch of growing railway lines. Disaster struck when the church burnt to the ground on a Saturday night in 1935. The Church of Holy Angels was reduced to ashes in less than an hour and to this day, no one is certain what caused the fire. The local volunteer fire brigade were all at the Darfield picture theatre, enjoying some leisure time when the fire began. Un fortunate ly , despi te the firefighter’s rapid response and only a slight easterly breeze, they

could not save the building. Following this disaster the current ‘blue church’ was built. Built with reinforced concrete and buff coloured cement - the cement was coloured blue to resemble bluestone. Blue Welsh slates were used on the roof and the interior seated 350 people and was adorned with beautifully carved Rimu. It took only eighteen months to complete the building which was then named after St Joseph. Bishop BrodieBrodieBrodieBrodie opened the church officially on October 11th, 1936 and it was definitely a project dear to his heart, as he had donated £8,000 towards the build. St Joseph’s has served the whole Malvern community well since then, having stood strong and prominent in the Darfield township. However the September 2010 earthquake took its toll, shaking the building, damaging its foundations and causing extensive damage. Cracks were clearly visible from the outside of the church and have been a constant reminder of the devastation caused by the seismic activity. The blue is a little paler now but once the repairs have been completed St Josephs will again be returned to its former glory. The extended Church site is also the final resting place of many

local families and a stroll through the cemetery will reveal the names of the foundation members of the parish, with a surprising number of their descendants still active in the community today. The scaffolding is expected to be removed shortly - when the painting has been completed. After this, there will be some minor repairs to the dark grey roof and the building will be fully restored and ready for use. The North Canterbury Rural Support Trust is very much in full swing at present owing to climatic and economic conditions. “While the Drought has been mainly centred round the Hurunui area, all our Trust area is included as being a ‘Drought Declared Event’,” said Trust Chairman Doug Doug Doug Doug ArchboldArchboldArchboldArchbold. What this means is that any farming business who has run at a loss for this farming year could qualify for the Rural Assistance Payment

(RAP). Particularly in areas where there is no irrigation, or where irrigation rights of supply may have been disrupted by the drought. For anyone meeting this criteria it’s as simple as phoning 0800 787 254 and asking to be transferred to a North Canterbury contact person. From the phone call it can be ascertained as to whether qualification criteria is met. It is only available while this ‘Drought Event’ is current, which presently runs to June 23rd, 2016.

The other event concerning the Trust is the Dairy payout of $3-90 per kilogram and this will affect all dairy farmers from owners to lower order sharemilkers. “We have found it is vital for the property owner and the sharemilker to work closely together at this time,” Doug said. “It is a partnership and it is absolutely vital that good communication be kept up,” he added. “Recently high winds have also caused havoc resulting in out of control Fires, including those in the Selwyn area. It is a frightening experience for any family to endure.”

Where an event is an ‘Economic’ one, it is out

of the hands of Government intervenon.

‘Climac’ events are treated differently.

This can be discussed with any of the Rural

Support team in Selwyn. There are five such

people who can advise about the difference

and they are willing to discuss by phoning

directly:

• Richard Friedman Dairy, Sheep & Beef

• Kathryn vanden Beuken Dairying

To the Editors:

HEARTFELT GRATITUDE - THANK YOU Our family are overwhelmed by the bravery, commitment, action and skill of the countless men and women who dropped everything and laboured long and hard into the night to stop the devastating fires that erupted on Thursday, March 10th during the terrifying gale force winds. Our hearts go out to the Knowles Family and the loss of their beloved family home and contents. The volunteer fire brigades and helicopter pilots are truly heroic in the tireless way they put their lives at risk and their family life and jobs on hold as they slaved to control the unpredictable elements. Thank you to farmers who had ponds or irrigation pipes that the helicopters could fill their monsoon buckets from. Thank you to Fonterra for providing a tanker and trailer of water to help the Fire Service in their tremendous battle. We are so indebted to so many kind and wonderful people. Our heartfelt gratitude and deep thanks - we are forever thankful.

Michael McCaughan receives the Brian Kars Memorial Trophy for Personality of the Year for his 40 wickets this season from

Don Kars (left) and Patron George Ridgen (right).

At the completion of the 2015-16 season Malvern cricket can be satisfied with the result. With Canterbury Country looking to strengthen the top tier of Club cricket in the district, it introduced an eight team 45 over Premier competition. Both Greendale and South Malvern entered a team. Unfortunately Kirwee couldn't find enough regular players to put a team forward so those keen were loaned to the other two Clubs. South Malvern can consider themselves unlucky not to make the semi finals, missing out on run rate after being level on points with Southbridge-Leeston, they had beaten all the teams above them and would have been worthy finalists. Greendale struggled to consistently score enough runs and finished seventh. The first few weekends of the new year were set side for a T20 tournament with two pools of four teams playing two games per day. Both Malvern teams played excellent cricket and had two wins each on the first weekend. South Malvern ticked up big scores, 275/3 against Southbridge-Leeston (Jared Kars 106*) and then 156/7 against Sefton. Greendale defended 95 against Oxford then 209/3 (Blair Chapman 112*) against Weedons. Rain washed out the second weekend, so with Greendale and South Malvern top of their pools they were declared joint winners, a fantastic result for Malvern cricket. Kirwee entered a team featuring the who's who of Malvern Cricket from the last twenty years for the Judd cup round and then hosted the final between Greendale and South Malvern, as well as the annual prize giving dinner.

Not only is it not an April Fools’ joke, but the welcome return of NRL to

Christchurch could see some lucky News readers score themselves freebie

ckets to a>end!

The best rugby league compeon in the world is coming back to

Christchurch in 2016 when the Penrith Panthers take on the New Zealand

Warriors on May 14th, 2016. The round 10 match at AMI Stadium, will kick

off at 5pm.

Panthers say they are delighted to be breaking new ground and will play a

home fixture in the city for the next two NRL seasons, with an opon for

another two years. Panthers Execuve General Manager Phil Gould

heralded the deal as a significant step in the growth and development of

rugby league.

"Over the next four years we hope to build a strong relaonship with the

area and have commi>ed ourselves to the promoon and development of

rugby league through junior league and schools’ programmes.”

The Penrith Panthers have a raX of engagements planned for their

Christchurch visit including Junior Skills Clinic, school visits and dinner

engagements.

The forthcoming match is supported by the Christchurch City Council, with

Mayor Lianne Dalziel welcoming the game’s return and commenng that

this is another big step in reclaiming the city’s pre-earthquake posion as

one of New Zealand’s top venues for major events.

“Christchurch is a city that loves our sport and we are proud to be hosng

the NRL and we want to commend the Penrith Panthers for comming

their home games to Christchurch,” Lianne added.

2016 marks the fiXieth anniversary of the Penrith Panthers joining the NRL

- the top professional Rugby League compeon in the world. The NRL was

founded in 1998 when two rival Australian Rugby League and Super League

compeons, combined and is now the third largest sport in Australia,

comprising of sixteen teams. The New Zealand Warriors, founded in 1995,

and based at Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland are the only NRL team from

outside Australia. In their seventeen seasons in the NRL they have

achieved: One minor premiership (2002), two grand final appearances

(2002 and 2011) and seven play-off appearances, as well as providing the

majority of Kiwis naonal team players.

This Province has a long history in the sport with Canterbury Rugby League

founded in 1912 and 148 teams currently parcipang in weekly

compeon, so it’s not surprising that fans from around Australia and New

Zealand have jumped at the opportunity of securing ckets to see the NRL

in Christchurch.

For News readers who’d like the chance of geWng to the

game, email us at [email protected] and tell us how

many teams from outside of Australia play in the NRL - put the

answer in the subject line and please include your details in

the email.

Entries need to be received by April 12th and there are two

double passes up for grabs and one Family (four) pass - please

state your preference.

A great night was had by all at the recent quiz night hosted by the Darfield Tennis Club and quiz masters Rob and Jane Potts. 13 teams competed for the first

pick of the prize pool, kindly donated by our generous sponsors (see below).

First were “The Thespians” (Kirwee Players), very closely followed by the “We R Still Thinking” from Sheffield and close behind them were the

“Weedon’s Wizards”. The teams enjoyed a great supper,

then after the quiz some live music from Liz Nichol. The Darfield Tennis Club would like to thank the

other Malvern Tennis Clubs for their support and of course the commercial community

who donated prizes. This has become an annual event for the club, so if you missed out, make sure you get in early

for registration next year.
