By Dr. Greg Fors, DC Board-certied Neurologist Most people think that they need to lose weight to get healthy when in truth, people must get healthy rst. Only then can their body properly burn off fat and maintain a healthy looking shape. One of the key body functions to be aware of for maintaining your health is the hormone or endocrine system. The endocrine system is an interconnected web of glands secreting various hormones that act like chemical messengers. These messages affect every organ, and control many of the body’s vital functions including growth, development, and the conversion of food into energy. When your endocrine system is out of balance even a subtle increase in one hormone can produce hormonal responses in other endocrine glands. This can cause unwanted symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, mood issues, even low libido or sex drive. Hormone imbalance can also cause your body to store excessive fat and stubbornly hold on to it making you ‘weight loss resistant’. Let’s concentrate on the hormones that are in charge of fat storage and burning; these include insulin, cortisol, growth hormone, thyroxine, adrenaline, testosterone and estrogen. One of the primary hormonal imbalances today is low thyroid function. The thyroid produces hormones that control cellular metabolism and the conversion of calories into energy, when it’s not working properly you can end up with weight gain and fatigue. The usual approach to identifying low thyroid function is to measure a hormone from the pituitary gland called TSH as well as a hormone from the thyroid gland called T4. If the results are within the labs “normal” range you are told your thyroid is ne. If your TSH is high and/or your T4 levels are low, doctors many times will prescribe a thyroid hormone such as Synthroid. This is a simple approach to a what could be a complex syndrome and many people continue to suffer from their symptoms even when they are taking thyroid medication, even after their doctor tells them their thyroid tests are back “in the normal range”. To nd the root causes and lasting solutions for weight gain and fatigue associated with low thyroid function, doctors need to look much deeper with very specic laboratory testing. Let’s move on… Chronic stress is a major contributor to weight gain and fatigue, primarily through the action of the hormone Cortisol. This inuential hormone binds to receptors in the hypothalamus of the brain, stimulating the urge to eat foods high in fat and/or sugar. Thus, it’s associated with increased appetite, abnormal cravings, and weight gain. Studies have shown that elevated cortisol from stress causes a buildup in abdominal fat. This toxic belly fat has been associated with an increased risk for heart attacks and strokes. In addition to all this internal hormone imbalance, research is now nding toxic man-made chemicals in our environment that also disrupt your hormonal system. These “endocrine-disruptors” include pesticides, and plasticizers, like phthalates and BPA. Dr. Bruce Blumberg, professor and researcher at the University of California in Irvine calls these chemicals “obesogens”,-hormone like chemicals that cause obesity. The EPA estimates there are over 10,000 different chemical ingredients found in cosmetics, food and consumer products. Of the more than 75,000 chemicals licensed for commercial use, more than 1,000 of them are specic endocrine disruptors. Have no doubt, the explosion of obesity and chronic fatigue in our society is more than just overeating. It has now been directly related to hormonal imbalances, much of which is triggered by our massive exposure to chemicals in foods, personal care, and home cleaning products. Specic laboratory testing can determine if these chemicals are leading to hormonal imbalance and your weight gain and fatigue. Not all doctors are trained in utilizing and properly interpreting these biomarkers. Consider more advanced metabolic therapies, ones that enhance your body’s ability to minimize the effect of these chemicals and can even help to remove them. Do you want to make that change in you and your family’s life? Do you want better health and the same for your children? How about a better healthier body shape? Living a dedicated green, “natural” lifestyle, consuming more organic foods and utilizing quality safe green products in your home and on your body will minimize exposure to disrupting chemicals and is a great start. GRANITE (continued):• Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills

of South Dakota was worked on by about 400 men and women from October 1927 to October 1941. Doane Robinson is known as the “Father of Mount Rushmore,” since it was his idea for colossal carvings in his home state. He contacted Gutzon Borglum about the project while Borglum was working on Stone Mountain.

• Dynamite was used for 90 percent of the carving on Mount Rushmore, blasting about 450,000 tons (408 million kg) of rock out of the way for the artistic renderings of four U.S. presidents. The presidents and the years their carvings were fi nished were: George Washington, 1934; Thomas Jefferson, 1936; Abraham Lincoln, 1937; and Theodore Roosevelt, 1939. The area receives about three million visitors per year.

• One of the earliest railroads in America was constructed specifi cally to haul granite. Located near present-day Quincy, Massachusetts, the 12-mile Granite Railway was used to transport granite rock from the Granite Railway Quarry to dock facilities on the Neponset River. Loaded onto ships, the granite was transported to other locations, often including Boston to supply the city’s growing construction industry.

• One of the fi rst noteworthy structures constructed of granite was King’s

Chapel in Boston. This small church was completed in 1754 and was built of granite quarried from the Granite Railway Quarry. The church still stands but is dwarfed by the surrounding skyscrapers of downtown Boston.

• The Offi cial State Rock of North Carolina is “Mount Airy White,” which is from the quarry of the same name. The white granite has been harvested from the “world’s largest open-faced quarry” since 1743.

• Mount Airy is also known for being the home of Andy Griffi th. His television show about life in the fi ctional town of Mayberry is celebrated each September with “Mayberry Days.” Also, the 50th Anniversary of the “Andy Griffi th Show” was held at the Andy Griffi th Museum in October 2010 in Mount Airy.

• Granite is the name of an unincorporated village in Baltimore County, Maryland. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was built in the 1830s using the locally quarried granite, mainly for the bridges. The local quarries provided granite for parts of the Washington Monument, Library of Congress and more government buildings in Washington, D. C. The Granite National Historic district includes about 62 properties all from the late 19th century.

• The “Granite Center of the World,” Barre, Vermont, is internationally

recognized for its high number of artists adept at stone cutting, etching and sandblasting. “Barre Gray” granite has been quarried and used for products since the late 1700s. According to geological estimates, the quarries in Barre have a supply that should last about 4,500 years. The city is home to the Vermont Granite Museum & Stone Arts School.

• Across the Canadian border from Vermont is another city known for granite and with a granite museum. Stanstead, Quebec, is the “Granite Capital of Canada” and home of the GranitExpo & Museum of Stanstead. The area was originally made up of three villages, which were Stanstead Plain, Rock Island and Beebe Plain. The name Stanstead was adopted in 1995. “Stanstead Grey Granite” is, “the cornerstone of the local economy, the rock, as it were, upon which Stanstead is built.”

• Canadians are known for loving their winter sports, and one of them is played with granite stones. The sport of curling became an offi cial winter Olympic event starting with the 1998 Nagano Games. Players slide stones across a sheet of ice towards a target area. The stones used are discs made of polished granite and defi ned by the World Curling Federation as weighing between 38 and 44 pounds (17-20 kg), with a maximum circumference of 36 inches (910 mm) and a minimum height of 4.5 inches (110 mm). Since

becoming an offi cial winter Olympic sport, Canada has emerged as the Olympics’ dominant nation winning eight medals — three gold, three silver and two bronze.

• Franconia Notch State Park in the White Mountains of New Hampshire had one of the most famous granite natural landmarks in the world. The “Old Man of the Mountain,” also known as “the Profi le,” was an illusion formed by fi ve granite ledges 1,200 feet (366 m) above Profi le Lake. The illusion gave the appearance of an old man looking to the east when observed from a very small area. If you were in the wrong spot, he just looked like the side of a rocky mountain! Nature carved the profi le thousands of years ago, and nature took it away on May 3, 2003, when it collapsed.

• The Old Man of the Mountain has been the state emblem for New Hampshire since 1945, is the graphic for the state’s highway route system and their license plates and is on the back of the state quarter minted in 2000. Because of its importance to the state, The Old Man of the Mountain Memorial is being constructed at the park, near where it existed for so many years. Five large standing stones will be aligned so that they will form the same profi le for future generations to enjoy.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

FEBRUARY SLUGGERS

Two great home run hitters entered theworld during February. Both overcamediffi cult childhoods to go on to record-setting fame.• A rough neighborhood in Baltimore,

Maryland, known as Pigtown wasthe birthplace of the “Sultan of Swat,” George Herman Ruth Jr. Of the family’s eight children, onlyGeorge and one sister survived. His mother battled tuberculosis for many years, and when he was just seven years old, his father brought him to an orphanage/reformatory, St.Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, operated by the Xaverian BrothersJesuit missionaries. There, Ruth Sr.signed over custody of his son, and for the next 12 years, Babe saw hisfamily only on special occasions. He learned the trade of tailoringand shirt making at the school, and played in the school band.

• Brother Mathias Boutlier was St.Mary’s Head of Discipline and took young Ruth under his wing, teachinghim the game of baseball. In 1919, at 19, Ruth signed with the Boston Red Sox, and being the youngest member of the team, was given the nickname“Babe.” He was sold to the Yankeesfi ve years later and contributed tothe team’s seven pennants and four World Series titles. Prior to hisarrival, the Yankees had never wona pennant.

• In 1927, the Bambino became thefi rst player to hit 60 homers in oneseason, a record that stood until 1961when it was broken by Roger Maris. His record of 714 home runs was onthe books for 41 years. He retired at age 40 in 1935 after 21 seasons. TheBabe perished from throat cancer in1948.

• Hank Aaron spent his childhood inpoverty, picking cotton on an Alabamafarm. When his family didn’t havemoney for baseball equipment, hehit bottle caps with sticks. Attendinghigh school in Mobile, Hank played

outfi eld and third base on the school’schampionship team but was alsoa success on the football team. Infact, he received several scholarshipoffers to play college football, but turned them down, knowing that baseball was his fi rst love.

• A spot on a Negro League team, theMobile Black Bears, came along inhis junior year of high school, and Aaron was paid $10 per game. At 17,he was given a minor league contract with the Indianapolis Clowns, part of the Negro American League.Three years later in 1954, he started his major league career, one that would span 23 seasons. By 1955,Aaron had already made his fi rst All-Star team, a feat he would repeat 20 more times. He spent 21 seasonswith the Braves (fi rst Milwaukee, then Atlanta). His fi nal two seasonswere with the Milwaukee Brewers.

• In the fi nal game of the 1973 season,“Hammerin’ Hank” tied Babe Ruth’shome run record of 714. During theensuing winter, he received deaththreats and hate mail from those whodidn’t want to see the Babe’s record broken by a black man. On April 8,1974, in a game between the Bravesand the Los Angeles Dodgers, Aaronreached that goal on a pitch from AlDowning. In October of that year,he hit his 733rd home, which proved d

to be his last as a member of theBraves ball club. Within a month, theBraves traded him to the MilwaukeeBrewers.

• During Aaron’s fi rst season with theBrewers, he broke Babe Ruth’s all-time RBI record of 2,217. Aaron stillholds the all-time record with 2,297runs batted in. His fi nal home run,No. 755, was achieved during hislast season in July of 1976, a record that stayed in place until 2007, whenBarry Bonds hit his 756th.

(ARA) - Winter weather can cause challenges for humans, but pet experts say we also need to think about what winter means for our pets, especially those that spend a lot of time outdoors.

“The rule of thumb is simple,” says Dr. Stephen A. Brammeier of the Kingsbury Animal Hospital in St. Louis. “If winter is hard on you, it’s also likely to be hard on your pets. If your dog and cat are accustomed to warm temperatures indoors, you’ll need to make sure they are ready for colder outside temperatures. And be gentle with your elderly pets - dogs and cats with arthritis can experience more pain and dysfunction during colder weather.”

Keep these winter pet care tips from Dr. Brammeier in mind for a healthy, happy winter:

* A dog’s fur is his winter coat, so keep it long in winter. Consider jackets for short- or medium-haired dogs when temperatures go below 40 degrees. But remember that pets lose the majority of heat through pads of their feet, ears and respiratory tract, so coats aren’t enough when it’s really cold out. Frostbite can be a problem for the tips of your cat’s ears and possibly for dogs with ears that stand up or have little fur.

* Make sure that dogs that live outdoors have access to fresh - and not frozen - water. If your dog sleeps outdoors, provide an insulated dog house with a south- or east-facing door, and with bedding such as straw. The house should be big enough for the dog to stand, circle and lie down.

* Even with these precautions, an outside dog should come inside when temperatures are in the single digits or below. In addition to the temperature, there are other winter hazards you

should watch for when your pets are outside, Dr. Brammeier says: * Sharp ice can cut your pet’s feet, and their pads are sensitive to cold, so don’t leave your dog standing on cold concrete for more than a few minutes.

* The antifreeze used in cars is extremely poisonous, even in very small quantities. An animal walking through a spill and then licking its pads can easily ingest enough to cause fatal kidney damage. Be sure to carefully wipe up any spills, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol.

* Some deicing products can be irritating to your pet’s feet and to their digestive systems if ingested. Washing feet after a walk can help. And consider using a deicing product specially formulated to be friendlier to pets, such as Safe Step Sure Paws from North American Salt Company. Sure Paws dissolves quickly so it doesn’t clump around the pads of the paw, and it doesn’t burn or sting paws that have cracked from the cold.

The website of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) also offers the following advice:

* Be careful about letting your cat outside. Outdoor cats and other animals will seek warmth wherever they fi nd it, including under the hoods of cars. If there are outdoor cats in your area, make a loud noise - honk the horn - before your start the engine.

* The world looks different to your pets when it’s covered with ice and snow. Be careful with cats that go outdoors, and don’t let your dog off the leash in ice and snow. Pets can become disoriented and lost in these unfamiliar surroundings, and ponds and lakes that appear frozen over may not be. In fact, the ASPCA says, more dogs are lost during the winter than any other time, so make sure your pets have identifi cation tags.

▲ If you need to peel peaches quickly-- say, for a pie or cobbler -- boil a pot of water and immerse them for 30 seconds, then drop them immediately into an ice-water bath. The peels will just slip off.

▲ Use a laundry bleach pen on stubbornmildew spots when cleaning your bathroom grout. This also works on food stains on laminate kitchen counters.

▲ “It’s really hard to tell if your kid needs new shoes when he is a toddler. Some shoes fi t perfectly well but are hard to put on little feet. From time to time,I trace my little one’s feet on a sheet of foam paper and cut it out. When I put that in the shoe, I can feel how muchroom is left, and it’s more rigid than apaper cutout. I also can take it with meand use it to be sure whether he’d fi t intoa pair of new shoes or not.” -- O.F. inNew York

▲ An old dish rack can be used to hold pot and pan lids in an organized way.

▲ If you want less rise in your cake, try using eggs straight from the refrigerator. This is especially good for sheet cakes that will be cut to stack.

▲ Lay a salmon fi let across the back of an overturned bowl. It will reveal any bones, because they pop up. Then you can remove the bones with a pair of tweezers.

▲ Give tough meat cuts a cold one: That is, marinate them in beer. Add a can of beer to a high-sided pan, then lay your meat cuts in it and let them sit for 15 minutes on each side.

▲ When rolling meatballs, give both hands a quick shot of cooking spray before you get started. The ground meat does not stick so much, and it’s easier to get uniform sizes and shapes.

▲ If you’re working on a project and need to hold a nail in place until you drive it in, consider a dab of Play-Doh. It works very well on horizontal projects, and it can be used briefl y to hold up small wall-hanging nails as well.

The way I see it, when it comes to windows you have three choices: Spend hundreds of dollars to hire a professional (forget it); learn to live with dirty, streaky windows (what could be worse?); or, learn the professionals’ trade secrets and do it yourself. Well, have no fear the secrets are here: First, you need to invest in a good professional-quality squeegee. I bought one for $5 at a janitorial supply store. Make sure you keep it fi tted with a sharp, new rubber blade. Next, the secret to sparkling windows is in the cleaning solution. To one gallon of water add one cup plain household ammonia (not lemon-scented or sudsing), one cup white vinegar and four drops (no more, no less) liquid dishwashing detergent (Joy is the best for this job). Using a large sponge or cloth for a scrubber, apply solution to the windows in a circular scrubbing motion if the windows are particularly dirty, or just spray it on for windows with minimal dirt. Wipe clean with your powerful squeegee. Sweep the squeegee back and forth across the window in one continuous motion. This “fanning”

technique takes practice to master. If your squeegee is in tip-top shape, it should remove every bit of the cleaningsolution from the glass without the need to follow up with a rag. However, untilyou master the technique, you may need to follow with a micro-fi ber cloth to get every last bit of solution off the glass. That’s it! It will take a little practice

to get really good at window washing, but when you do, you will feel soaccomplished.By the way, this cleaning solution worksgreat on lots of things: windows, mirrors, countertops, stovetops, shower doors, bathroom fi xtures and ceramic tile.Because there is so very little detergent in it, there is no need to rise when usingit for window washing.

Caution: Because ammonia canremove wax and even some paints, takeproper precaution. As with all cleaningsolutions, label clearly and keep out of the reach of children.I calculate this solution costs about $.45per gallon as compared to Windex whichcomes in at $20 for the same amount.Wow! Cheaper and better.P.S. It suddenly occurred to me that not

all of you are as fortunate as I to livewhere it is summer-like all year round. If you are up to your windowsills insnow and storm windows, clean all your mirrors now and wait a few months onthe windows.

● On Feb. 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln is born in Hodgenville, Ky. As an adult, Lincoln’s sense of humor may have helped him hide recurring bouts of depression. He admitted to friends and colleagues that he suffered from intense melancholia and hypochondria most of his adult life.

● On Feb. 10, 1846, Brigham Young leaves Nauvoo, Ill., and begins leading 1,600 Mormons west across the frozen Mississippi River to a temporary refuge at

Sugar Grove, Iowa. It was their fi rst stop in a westward migration that eventually brought them to the Great Salt Lake in Utah. By fall nearly 12,000 Mormons had made the trek.

● On Feb. 18, 1959, Ray Charles records “What’d I Say,” which went on to become one of the greatest rhythm-and-blues records ever made. The call-and-response song was created to fi ll time at the end of a concert, and the crowd loved it.

● On Feb. 13, 1945, a series of Allied fi rebombing raids begins against the German city of Dresden, reducing the town to rubble and killing as many as 135,000 people. It was the most destructive bombing of the war. Little, if anything, was accomplished strategically, since the Germans were about to surrender.

● On Feb. 9, 1964, the Beatles are introduced to America on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” singing “All My Lovin’,” “Til There Was You” and “She Loves You.” It is estimated that 73 million Americans watched the show.

● On Feb. 8, 1983, gunmen steal the champion Irish racehorse Shergar from a stud farm owned by the Aga Khan in County Kildare, Ireland. The 5-year-old thoroughbred stallion was worth $13.5 million. Despite a highly publicized search by authorities, Shergar was never seen again and no ransom was paid.

● On Feb. 11, 1990, in a major upset, Buster Douglas defeats Mike Tyson, the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, in 10 rounds at a boxing match in Tokyo. The loss to Douglas was the beginning of a long, downward spiral for Tyson, which included jail time and boxing license revocation in Nevada.

● On Feb. 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs Executive Order 9066, authorizing the removal of all people from military areas. The military in turn defi ned the entire West Coast as a military area, and more than 110,000 Japanese Americans were relocated to remote internment camps around the country.

● On Feb. 14, 1929, in Chicago, gunmen in the suspected employment of organized crime boss Al Capone murder seven members of George “Bugs” Moran’s North Siders gang. The so-called St. Valentine’s Day Massacre motivated federal authorities to redouble their efforts to fi nd evidence incriminating enough to take Capone off the streets.

● On Feb. 16, 1878, the Bland-Allison Act -- which provided for a return to the minting of silver coins -- becomes the law of the land. During the 19th century, money was backed by actual deposits of silver and gold, unlike today when the value of American money is essentially secured by faith in the stability of the government.

HAVE A HEART!We all know that hearts are synonymous with Valentine’s Day. This week, Tidbits studies up on the human heart, the muscle that “takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’!” • Just a little larger than the size of your fi st, your heart weighs between 7 and 15 ounces (200 to 425 g). The average heart beats about 72 times per minute, which is about 100,000 times a day. You do the math —That’s 3.6 million times every year. If you live 70 years, that’s 2.5 billion beats over the course of your lifetime.

• Every day your heart pumps 2,000 gallons (7,570 l) of blood through your body’s 60,000 miles (96,560 km) of blood vessels. Turn on your kitchen faucet full blast for the next 45 years and that will equal the amount of blood pumped by your heart during your lifetime. That’s about 1.5 million gallons (5,678,118 l), which would fi ll about 200 tanker cars on a train.

• About four weeks after conception, a fetus’ heart starts beating. Its heart rate is about 150 beats per minute, twice as fast as an adult’s. At 12 weeks, its heart is pumping 60 pints (28 l) of blood every day.

• The heart cavity is made up of four parts, two upper chambers and two lower chambers. The upper compartments are called the right and left atria, and the lower chambers are the right and left ventricles. The body’s largest artery, the aorta, originates from the left ventricle, the largest and strongest

chamber that pumps to all body parts. Its walls are about ½ inch (1.27 cm) thick. Your body contains about 75 trillion cells that receive blood from the heart. Only one body part, the cornea, receives no blood.

• The word “cardiac” means “related to the heart,” and has its origins in the Greek word for heart, kardia.

• There’s a difference between the hearts of men and women. The man’s is typically about 2 ounces (62 grams) heavier, but beats about eight fewer times per minute.

• When you have a good belly laugh, up to 20 percent more blood is pumped throughout your entire body. This can contribute to stress reduction, so laugh it up!

• The world’s fi rst successful human heart transplant was completed in 1967 by South African physician Dr. Christiaan Barnard. The recipient Louis Washansky lived 18 days. Today, heart recipients live an average of 15 years. About 3,500 transplants are performed every year. After two years, about 80 percent of recipients are alive, and after fi ve years, 73 percent of males and 67 percent of females still survive. Medical research has shown that same-gender transplants have better results.

• The world’s longest-surviving heart transplant recipient lived 31 years after his surgery. Tony Huesman was 20 years old when viral pneumonia damaged his heart and he received a new one in 1978. He lived until 2009, when ironically, it was cancer that claimed his life. Kelly Perkins received her new heart in 1995 and has since climbed Mt. Fuji, Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Matterhorn, Mt. Whitney and Argentina’s Cajon de Arenales.

Walking Speed Predicts Life Expectancy

by Matilda Charles

As we age, many of us fi nd that our walking speed gets slower. Most of us assume that it’s a function of age and that it’s inevitable. It’s not. Researchers compared natural walking speed and life expectancy and came to some startling conclusions. They combined the results of nine different studies and followed 34,000 participants for up to 21 years. Each participant was age 65 or older with an average age of 73 years. Their natural walking speed, from a standing start, was measured and timed for short distances. The result of the studies: Those who naturally have an above-average walking speed will generally also have a longer-than-average life expectancy. Researchers were able to correlate current age with walking speed and predict the likely survival ages. For those participants age 75 and older, the information was especially on target.

Additionally, researchers realized that the information was valuable enough to be used as a standard assessment, such as blood pressure, heart rate, weight, and general mobility tests. That’s not to say you should intentionally start walking faster. Your body picks its own natural speed. However, it wouldn’t hurt to have your doctor do a test so see how fast you normally walk. It can be done easily in a hallway of the doctor’s offi ce by a nurse or practitioner. If you walk slower than average, your doctor could look for the reasons why, as walking speed is an indication of the overall state of your health. If a problem is identifi ed and then remedied, your normal walking speed may increase -- which will put you in a category of those who have a longer life expectancy and better body functioning.Wear your sneakers to the doctor’s offi ce!

Political Precedents● There have been a few nortorious presidential siblings, like Billy Carter, Roger Clinton, Sam Houston Johnson, and “Big Don” Nixon, but none of them can stand out to the likes of Ulysses S Grant’s younger brother, Orvil. Orvil and Grant’s secretary of war, William Belknap. These two hit upong the idea of demanding kickbacks from franchising highly profi table trading posts on the western front.

Back then soldiers were forced to purchase products and supplies from army trading posts. Grant and Belknap demanded money from the trading post owners which of course caused them to jack up their prices so high that General George Armstrong Custer complained. Custer even testifi ed against the two scondrels during a Senate investigation, another reason why the administration of Uslyssis S. Grant is considered the most scandal ridden of all presidencies.

● On July 11, 1804, Alexander Hamilton was killed during a duel by Vice President Aaron Burr. Ironically, in 1797, Hamilton had nearly dueled with

the future president James Monroe, but it was Aaron Burr who stepped in and stopped the confrontation. After his duel with Hamilton, Burr was charged with murder in New York and New Jersey. Neither case ever went to trial so Burr fl ed to South Carolina to let the smoke settle. He soon returned to Washington to fi nish out his term as vice president.

● I guess these things were fairly common and sometimes downright funny. Jesse Bynum and Daniel Jennifer, both congressmen in 1836, decided, after a shouting match, that they should make it a shooting match. They went to

Bladensburg Dueling Ground (yes, they had places to set aside to get the job done). They paced off 10 feet and fi red, no one was hit. So, they reloaded (good grief) and shot again. Again, no one was hit. This happened a 3rd, 4th and 5th times. On the 6th reload, Bynum’s pistol accidentally discharged. Now this was in violation of proper dueling ettiquette so one of Jennifer’s seconds was about to plug Bynum when Jennifer ordered him to stop. Jennifer then took careful aim at Bynum and shot. You guessed it, he missed, so both dishonored “ahem” gentlemen decided to call it a draw.
