Grateful On Opening Day By: Ronda Carty

It has been years since I’ve been in the woods and watched a sunrise on opening day of deer season. My father, Rondal Carty like many fathers was my mentor and being a military man he made sure everything was done by the book. He taught my brothers and I how to handle weapons, hunt, fish and survival tactics. Years later, I would bet against all of them and win with their own guns at any target challenge.

We were told the do’s and don’ts of deer hunting, the planning and tips that only a seasoned hunter would know. Dad had topographic maps of our hunting area which we scouted often placing X’s, lines, circles, dates and notes on it indicating ruts, paths and sighting of each trip.

A month prior to opening day we would sight in our guns but one year I kept putting it off saying, “I just didn’t want to shoot this weekend”. After three weeks of delay, I knew I had to load my gear and head to dads. I couldn’t explain to him why, I wasn’t excited about shooting this time. We had set our targets, and dad started running down the list: Do you have everything you need? Is your weapon clean? Ears & Eyes? Primers? and the list continued. I often felt I should respond, “Yes Sir” instead of, “Check, Roger that and Yes Dad”.

Muzzleloader tested and ready. I load the 45 cal. and took aim with it resting in the sight bags and held it there for a long time. I slowly turned my head toward dad and the look on his face was confusion and anticipation and I said, “I don’t want to shoot”. Now with a look of shock he asked, “ What is going on with you? Do you not want to hunt this year?” I never answered his questions and took aim again and pulled the trigger.

The exploding sound was magnified louder than normal. The ball traveled half way the length of the barrel and the barrell exploded into five pieces. That voice inside of my head knew something weeks ahead of time and I listen to that voice more often now. We had done everything right but something happened. With a broken thumb, stitches and burns to my left hand I wasn’t able to hunting or be with dad that season.

A year later dad was sighting in his Ithaca and he gave my son, Tyson a Savage 22lr/20ga that day. Watching dad teach my son was a flashback to my childhood. Tyson was great with the 22 and surprised me with his 20 gauge grouping. Smiling Tyson hands me the gun and a challenge, “See if you can hit it, Mom”. I had not shot anything since the accident but I loaded the 20ga, aimed, fired and bull’s-eye. I realized then, it’s time to shoot and hunt once again.

HE SLEEPS WHILE THINGS EXPLODE! This man was found outside of the vendors area. Wonder what friend posted the sign? It reads: Free To A Good Home All Shots Current House Broken Neutered

(KCR Fall 2012 Shoot)

If passed, this amendment will not change routine regulations that range from determining hunting seasons to who has to obtain a sporting permit and how much they should pay. It will ensure that hunting and fishing remain the preferred methods to keep wildlife populations in check.

All told, 13 states now have this type of amendment in their constitutions and Nebraska, Idaho and Wyoming will join Kentucky on Nov. 6 in trying to boost that number to 17. Although Vermont’s was added in 1777, most have been approved since 1996. Not surprisingly, a wide array of hunting and fishing organizations are strong supporters of this amendment, including the National Rifle Association. Read more here: Story Link

Superstorm Sandy - Survival ModeBy: Ronda Carty

As we see the images of devastation that was caused by this storm we should take note to be prepared for any disaster ourselves. I have been in hurricanes, blizzards and ice storms and with each event the power was out for over a week. Since I had prepared I didn’t mind the loss of electricity and neighbors came together when needed. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case when massive flood waters, loss of electric in highly populated areas are hit. Today, a week after the storm, the media is starting to show the hidden side of what can happen with violence, looting and greed. Police now stand guard at gas stations after a shooting occur in the line. Love thy neighbor may not last too long in large cities. This should be a reminder to be prepared, well stocked with food and water and know those around us who can assist or those that you may need to assist in case of an emergency.

Debate answer on assault weapons ban could cause problems for Obama. By: William La Jeunesse

President Obama may have been tossing a bone to his base, but one answer in the second presidential debate could come back to haunt him with a key voter group -- gun owners. When asked what the administration has done or plans to do to limit assault weapons at the Oct. 16 debate, Obama said part of the solution to gun violence “is seeing if we can get an assault weapons ban reintroduced.” That comment caught fire with gun owners. KCR OCT. QUIZ ANSWER

KCR QUIZ . . . Who started New Haven Arms Company and what was their next company? If you know the answer post it to our Facebook page.

That opening day of shotgun season in Vevay, IN I bagged the largest doe. Even bigger than dad’s and the landowners. That was also our final deer hunting season together and the last time I saw him, two weeks later he passed away suddenly.

Dad was well known for his skills, Earl Ruby of the Courier Journal wrote about him often on hunting, fishing adventures and trophy wins across the United States.

I am sure each hunter can recall learning to shoot, to hunt, our teachers, our defeats and our successes as well.

As the sun rises on opening day and you take aim, remember those who shared their time and talent with you. Pass on that knowledge and tradition to someone else, they too will be grateful and will think of you on their opening days.

What is the connection of Ethan Allen and firearms? It sure isn’t furniture for the answer. Ethan Allen the gunmaker, was famous for pepperbox pistols. (Not the Revolutionary War Ethan Allen)
