RED CROSS

At our Lyndoch branch meeting on 2 March, we held a business meeting at which we discussed ways in which

we can help Red Cross. Red Cross have several ways of fundraising: used stamps, old X-rays and collection of

food for their community service programs. In the Lyndoch Post Office, there is a box in which you can de-

posit your used stamps. Red Cross collect old X-rays from which they can extract silver. We will be putting a

box in the Lyndoch library in June for those so don't throw them away. At a later time, we will be arranging a

food collection.

Thank you to all those who donated to Red Cross Calling during the month of March. Your help is very much

appreciated. Thank you to Ross Lagana for allowing us to collect outside the supermarket.

Red Cross will be serving Devonshire teas from 11 am until 3 pm at the Art Exhibition in the Lyndoch Institute

Hall on Saturday and Sunday, 18 and 19 April.

Red Cross meetings are held on the first Monday of the month in the Council Chambers (behind the Library)

at 2 pm. Anyone interested in Red Cross and their activities are invited to attend the meeting. The annual

subscription is only $5.

The programme for the next meeting on Monday, April 13 is Kym Michelmore who will be taking us on a Lyn-

doch History Walk.

For more information on the above or Red Cross, please phone Malinda on 8524 5353

G’day folks,

I hope I am not tempting fate by saying that the brigade has had a very quiet month with only 4 callouts, sadly one of those incidents was to assist SA ambulance at the oval that resulted in the sad passing of a young football player. On behalf of the Williamstown CFS brigade I wish to pass on our condolences to his family at this sad time. Many may have noticed the new shed at the back of the station - this has been built out of funds raised over many years by our own fundraising. This has allowed us room to tidy up the main station and to utilise the space better - so please forgive the appearance at the moment as things are in a transitional stage and we soon will be clearing the piles of rubbish and making the area more presentable. Recently the kind folks of Williamstown held a thankyou CFS event with raffles and many donated prizes, the pro-ceeds were presented to the Brigade on a training night, we then split the proceeds from the main raffle to the other brigades within our Barossa group, namely Concordia, Lyndoch, Mt Pleasant, Springton and Eden Valley each gratefully receiving $900. All respective brigade captains were amazed at the amount and all wish to pass on their thanks to our community – A HUGE THANK YOU FROM THE BAROSSA GROUP. As to what use the funds will used has yet to be decided one of the items on the wish list is a thermo imaging cam-era which is used to detect hot spots after a fire so we can quickly direct our actions where needed, we borrowed this piece of equipment from elsewhere during the Eden Valley fire and found it saved us a lot of time and resources when blacking out areas. Steve Elliott Williamstown brigade captain. Phone 8524 6405 for emergencies call 000 The 2015 cadet season commenced on the 5th of January with 16 cadets continuing from the 2014 season. We were also very pleased to receive 6 new cadets this year who all became keen after the recent Sampson Flat fire. The training this year has so far consisted on hose work, appliance pumping, Knowledge on fire behaviour both in rural and urban environments, In depth knowledge of the fire appliances both from our brigade and our surrounding brigades, knowledge on incident control and structure, the ability to understand and use the government radio net-work and a session on applying first aid. An evening was spent discussing drugs and alcohol to educate the cadets on the effects to themselves and those around them. This session went really well and the cadets learnt a lot from the training. During February the cadets got to go to the Woodside CFS airbase to learn about ae-rial fire suppression. The cadets really enjoyed themselves and due to their great behaviour on the night they were given the opportunity to view many of the water bombing aircraft. The cadets had a field trip to the Mt Crawford For-est Head Quarters to Learn about the operations of For-estry SA and the Big Yellow fire Appliances known as the Fire Kings, again the cadets thoroughly enjoyed them-selves and their good behaviour noticeable to the Forestry SA employees. Sadly however many of the cadets were shocked and shaken after the upsetting events which occurred during football training at the Barossa Football Club. The cadets came together and showed their strength and came up with an idea to do a huge bottle run to collect money for the Heartkids SA charity. Please anyone who wishes to help our cadets and donate your cans and bottles to assist with our cadets bottle run please contact me on 0439 489 759 to arrange pick up or drop off of bottles. Barossa District Football and Netball Club

Another season is upon us and players, coaches and committee members have been busy ensuring the Club is ready for its first round clash against Nuriootpa, at Lyndoch Oval on April 11. There have been some sig-nificant changes to the Committee, and it is pleasing to see some new faces take on new roles throughout the Club. Likewise, on both the football field and netball court we have been lucky enough to attract some new players, which will further strengthen and bolster all of our grades. The exciting thing is that we have a terrific future with an increasing number of young players. This year we will be fielding 11 Football teams and 18 Net-ball teams, so there is plenty happening. It’s been great to see such great numbers out for training. Despite preparations for the season going well, and having some new blood welcomed at the Club, there is always room for a few more helpers.

We urgently need people interested in be-coming Sports Trainers for the Club. If you have an interest in first aid, injury prevention and rehabilitation we will provide the necessary first aid and Level 1 Sports Trainer accreditation training. This is a lead in for those interested in career in health. If you already have suitable training/experience please contact Andrew Sut-cliffe 0468 438 627. We are still looking for a team man-ager for the Reserves football team. Games this month are Nuriootpa at Lyndoch on April 11, Tanunda at Williamstown on April 18, bye on April 25th and Gawler Centrals away on May 2. Come and get involved with your local country sporting club, get fit, make new friends and enjoy playing these two great sports. The Club bar is open every Thursday night with meals available. It’s a great way to meet new people and become part of a great family sporting club.

Go those Dogs in 2015.

In loving memory of Ike Zerk

The Committee, Volunteers, Team mates and Parents of the Barossa District Football and Netball Club wish to extend their sincere sympathy to the Zerk family on the sudden passing of Ike. Ike was a popular and much loved member of our Club, and the Williamstown and Lyndoch communities. Taken too soon, he will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with Jordan, Megan and Amaya at this difficult time.

It’s hard to forget someone who gave us all so much to remember. Ike, we will never forget your shining light.

4 IKE

The Barossa District Football and Netball Club are host-ing a fundraising event in Ike’s memory. The fundraiser, on April 11 at the Lyndoch Oval, will help raise much-needed funds for Heart Kids Australia. Show your sup-port for this incredible foundation and help honour Ike’s memory by donating online https://give.everydayhero.com/au/kirsty-22. To honour this much loved young man, his friends, teammates and members of the wider community are paying their respects on social media by uploading an image of their football and using the hashtag #putoutyourfootyforike. The response to this social me-dia trend has been widespread across the entire, South Australian community.

Eating what you grow was the topic for the March meeting when members welcomed JOY NOBLE and her husband to the

Williamstown Uniting Church Garden Club, who also brought samples of fresh and preserved produce.

Joy told us that by planning our gardens well, we can have fresh fruit and vegeta-bles all year round, and can preserve the surplus. Firstly the soil needs good prepa-ration e.g. if clay soil add compost and gypsum, if water sits on top, add water agent and for citrus potash and manga-nese is good, and all plants benefit from mulch and good feed at least twice a year. When shading plants white shade cloth is best, and when saving seeds, save only the best.

Birthday greeting to CONNIE, LEONIE and LYNNE.

Raffle winners were ROBYN, JEAN and JOHN.

Flower competition winners were KATHY, JEAN and BETTY ~ thanks to Joy for judg-ing these.

Next meeting, please note the date (our usual day is a public holiday )MONDAY, APRIL 13th,at1:00pm .

History of Anzac biscuits Every year, as Anzac Day approaches, people become curious about Anzac biscuits. Maybe it's because the thought of them is a delectable relief to the sombreness of that day and all that it represents. But it is easy to make mistakes about Anzac biscuits, strangely enough. The biscuit that most of us know as the Anzac biscuit is a sweet biscuit made from rolled oats and golden syrup. These must not be confused with that staple of soldiers' and sailors' rations for centuries, the hardtack biscuit. To deal with these rather unpalatable objects first, hardtack biscuits are a nutritional substitute for bread, but unlike bread they do not go mouldy. And also unlike bread, they are very, very hard. On Gallipoli, where the supply of fresh food and water was often difficult to maintain, hardtack biscuits became notorious. So closely have they been identified with the whole Gallipoli experience that they are sometimes known Anzac tiles or Anzac wafer biscuits. Hence the confusion with the sweet biscuit. There is actually nothing wafer-like about hardtack biscuits. Soldiers often devised ingenious methods to make them easier to eat. A kind of porridge could be made by grating them and adding water. Or biscuits could be soaked in water and, with jam added, baked over a fire into "jam tarts". Not at all like Mum used to make, but better than nothing.

Four artillery drivers stopped for lunch

Strange as it seems, the Australian War Memorial holds in its collection a range of hardtack biscuits from the First World War. So durable are they that soldiers used them not just for food, but for creative, non-culinary purposes. The texture and hardness of the biscuits enabled soldiers to write messages on them and send them long distances to family, friends, and loved ones. The origin and invention of the sweet Anzac biscuit is contested. Conventionally it is an eggless sweet biscuit made from oats and golden syrup, but these sweet biscuits are not the same rations that were supplied to soldiers in Gallipoli. From the 1920s onwards Australian recipe books nearly always included Anzac biscuits but exactly how this recipe became identified with Anzac, or the First World War, is unknown. They don't have the shelf-life of hardtack biscuits but they do last a reasonable amount of time, so it is possible that they became known as a suitable inclusion in parcels of small luxuries and comforts that families and charitable organisations used to send overseas to soldiers.

Soldiers also used the biscuits as paint canvases and even as photo frames. One such biscuit features the use of wool and bullets to create a picture frame

Christmas card made from army biscuits in 1900. A small painted biscuit on which one side is painted an island scene in colour. The other side is painted gold and in black are painted the words ‘Good Luck to YOU / FROM US AT”TOL” / WE’RE SENDING THIS / (WE’LL RISK IT) / XMAS CARDS ARE VERY / SCARCE SO WE / WROTE IT ON A BISCUIT’. Making Anzac biscuits is one tradition that Australians use to commemorate Anzac day. Everyone has their favourite recipe and there are countless arguments over whether they should be served crunchy or soft. Although the sweet Anzac biscuits are far more enjoyable to eat than their hardtack counterparts it is safe to say that, with the creativity of the First World War soldiers, the Anzac tile biscuits had far greater uses than just for eating.

For this and more great stories go to Australian War Memorial webpage

Anzac biscuit recipes The popular Anzac biscuit is a traditional, eggless sweet biscuit. Early recipes did not include coconut. The following recipe (without coconut) was published in The Capricornian (Rockhampton, Queensland) on Saturday, 14th August 1926.

Ingredients

2 cups rolled oats 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup plain flour 1/2 cup melted butter 1 tbls golden syrup 2 tbls boiling water 1 tsp bicarbonate soda (add a little more water if mixture is too dry)

Method

Combine dry ingredients. Mix golden syrup, boiling water and bicarbonate of soda until they froth. Add melted butter.

Combine butter mixture and dry ingredients. Drop teaspoons of mixture onto floured tray, allowing room for spreading.

Bake in slow oven.
