Contributions are always welcome. Please send stories and photos to

A BIG congratulations to Cairns for attracting 211 competitors for the Australian Junior Championships in September.

NR will be well represented by 24 players.

Good luck to Hayley, BJ and Wes when they represent Queensland at the Australian Junior Teams Championship.

Preparations for the 2015 Mackay Open are well underway and an entry form has been included with this newsletter.

I encourage you to support this event by participating. With only two Queensland events having PSA status it is even more critical that we do everything we can to support such events otherwise they will disappear.

This event is so important for young professionals to build world ranking points in Australia. It also attracts high level competition for developing juniors.

It is also a perfect opportunity to see some world class squash being played on our very own back door.

Good luck to all the players traveling to the National Masters Titles to be held in Perth in September.

2015 OPENMACKAYThe professional squash players have until the

to enter the 2015 Mackay Open.

Queenslander is currently the highest ranked player to enter the PSA M5 event.

If Alexander contests this year’s event the former WN36 will be a short-priced favourite to lift the Mackay Open crown for the first time.

Alexander underwent hip surgery in August 2013 and is slowly but surely rebuilding his world ranking.

2014 Runner Up is the top seeded player at this year’s championship.

The Aussie World #61 will be hoping for a change of fortune after only reaching one final on tour in 2015.

The women’s draw is highly competitive with the top 8 seeds all ranked in the World Top 100.

8th September

Zac Alexander

Sarah Cardwell

2013 Mackay Open Champion Lisa Camilleri is seeded #4 and based on her highest World ranking could cause an upset or two!

Recently, contested the

Australian Open Squash Championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Big Steve had a solid championship reaching the quarter-finals of the PSA M25 event.

Three five game marathons and 265 minutes on court suggests Steve is in fine physical shape right now.

Finitsis began proceedings with a slightly rusty win against Kiwi veteran Kashif Shuja.

But his 2nd round victory over Indian Mahesh Mangaonkar was full of merit.

Seeded #6, Mangaonkar got off to a flying start winning the first two games 11-7 and 11-4 before an unseeded Finitsis dug deep.

Finitsis won the 3rd and 4th games 11-9 before stunning his opponent, who is ranked 30 places higher, with a powerful 11-7 finish to take the match and reach the quarter-finals.

If that match wasn’t long enough Finitsis then played the match of his life against fellow Aussie Ryan Cuskelly WN34.

For just under 2 hours these two gladiators

Innisfail’s Steve Finitsis

traded blows. #3 seed Cuskelly won the first 11-7 before Finitsis took a nail biting second 12-10.

The 3rd was equally as tight but Cuskelly prevailed 12-10 to take a 2-1 lead. Finitsis then ripped into Cuskelly taking the 4th 11-4. Cuskelly’s effort in the 4th might have been a tactical ploy to ensure he had enough gas in the tank for the 5th.

Maybe it was just a case of fresher legs as Cuskelly only needed 73 minutes of court time to reach the quarters where as Finitsis used up 149 minutes of energy.

Despite a valiant effort Finitsis went down 6-11 in the fifth after 118 minutes of intense squash.

Tully’s got off to a fantastic start winning her first round match against the #15 seed in the PSA W25 Australian Open.

WN80 Camilleri lost the first game against WN64 Vanessa Raj from Malaysia but then knuckled down to win the next three.

An unseeded Camilleri then had to face the #8 seed and fellow Aussie Donna Urquhart.

This was always going to be a difficult assignment. Lisa has only just returned from injury and hasn’t had the benefit of a solid preparation.

Camilleri was highly competitive in the first against the WN33 and former Top 20 player but struggled after that.

Camilleri lost in three but at this stage staying injury free is her main goal.

Most importantly 24 players from NR will be competing with 2 from Cairns, 6 from Ingham, 1 from Innisfail, 12 from Mackay and 3 from Townsville.

That one from Innisfail is very special. His name is Matthew Finitsis!

NEXTGENERATION The Finitsis name is very well known in squash circles especially around Innisfail.

The town's favourite son is professional squash player Steve Finitsis.

Steve is in Innisfail for about 4 weeks before heading back to the Netherlands where he is based.

Steve's brother Peter has a son Matthew, who is about to embark on his first major championship in Cairns at the end of September.

Inspired by Steve, Matt changed from playing tennis to take up squash approximately 20 months ago. Matt would love to follow in his Uncle's footsteps. When Steve is away Matt certainly isn't struggling to find suitable sparring partners. Dad Peter plays on line 1 in the local fixtures.

So why not call on the services of Uncle Steve to help with preparations!

Steve and Peter’s sister Anne McAvoy, plays on line 4 and Matt's second cousin Kris Santarigais also plays on line 4.

This is Matt's first season playing in the comp which consists of 6 mixed teams of 5 players.

Matt has improved steadily during the first round of competition and has ended his first round of comp on a high, pushing the #1 player on his line to 5.

Matt is realistic about his chances in Cairns but is looking forward to the competition and

the experience playing against his own age group.

He is looking forward to making some new squash friends.

Good luck Matt!

THANK YOU SUSAN PALMER

Thank you so much Susan.

Susan is an absolutely fantastic volunteer for junior squash at Mackay Leisure Centre.

She not only collects the fees for the junior fixtures every Friday but she also arranges various fundraising activities including Krispy Cream drives and recently a Christmas in July function.

She is currently conducting her second fundraiser for Krispy Creams.

She is a tireless worker and very dedicated in her aim to have funds for all the juniors travelling to key events such as QJC, AJC, AJO and even the qualifiers in NR.

Susan is being recognised this month for her dedication and commitment to helping our juniors.

2015 ROCKY OPENTen Mackay players made the road trip to Rockhampton for the 2015 Rocky Open.

The players in alphabetical order were Darryn Dyer, Wes Dyer, Dani Hankinson, Hayley Hankinson, Kyle Hoani Vincent, Alec MacDonald, Rachel McDermott, Lucas Nielsen, Andrew Ollett and Grant Polley.

AUSTRALIANMASTERS

The Australian Masters Individual Squash Titles are taking place in Perth from the 7-11 September. The Tournament will take place at the Mirrabooka Squash Centre.

Over 500 players will take part in the largest participation tournament on the Australian Squash Calendar.

Cairns Squash players,

will represent the Cairns Region in their individual age Groups.

Steve Finitsis dropped in recently and gave the Cairns based players some extra advice on how to best prepare for the titles.

Forster, Zaeh, Rathnasamy and Hall recently won their respective age groups at the recent Great Barrier Reef Masters Titles held in Cairns.

Hall was runner up in his age group at this year’s State Championships whilst Forster

has been a previous State title holder.

All should receive respectable seedings for the Tournament based on previous results and we hope to bring a title back to NQ.

Former NQ Squash Centre operators Reg and Beryl Robbins will be there along with son Dale who is a prolific winner of Australian Masters Titles. Beryl is also an Australian Masters Title holder.

There will be contingents going to all the Masters tournaments in the future. Australian Titles, State Titles, NQ Games, GBRMG and overseas tournaments.

We urge all Northern Region Masters Players to get involved and have the time of your life playing and socialising with others that love the game.

Age Groups start at 35 so if you’re of age get yourself into it!

RETURNS NEXT MONTH ...

Hello from the Far North!

Season 2 has just kicked off in the Weipa Squash Club 2015 competition.

Much has been happening this year for the Squash Club! From renovations to dislocated knee caps to junior competitions to a new committee we have had it all!

In our first season of this year we had 4 lines in A grade (each team taking its name from local camping spots) and 7 lines in B grade (named from street names around town).

All agreed our end of season Grand Final and BBQ was great fun had by all, going well into the wee hours of the morning and featuring many spontaneous barefoot games of hybrid racquet squash ball!

Over the June/July school holidays we held an informal 'Sixers' competition which was really popular - players challenged other players with the winner of the match taking the spot on the ladder of their competitor.

Lots of fun and many tumbles and jumps on the ladder! It was fantastic to get lots of new faces in and playing on the courts!

Our beloved courts finally got a bit of a make-over during the June/July break. All 3 courts were thoroughly scrubbed down and painted, as well as all lights fixed.

Story by Jessica Hall

It was a HUGE job and we are so thankful to our resourceful and generous players with trade skills and kind hearts, as well as to the professionalism of local paint group,

.

It is now so different and very refreshing to be able to see the ball clearly during play! It's definitely a faster game with hopefully more accurate umpiring now!

This season we have 5 lines in A grade (named after sharks) and 4 lines in B grade (named after lures - fishing being the favoured local past time).

We are in the process of putting together a grant submission to get some coaches up to Weipa to run coaching sessions with our Committee members as well as interested players, and holding junior competitions to get some youngsters involved in this great game.

We would love to hear from anyone with ideas or interest in getting a junior competition going.

If you would like to get in touch please feel free to email us at

or find us on Facebook Weipa Squash Club.

Slade Brothers

Til next time, happy Squashing!
