Dear Readers,IntRAweek has passed and

two hundred newcomers have become part of what we call our ‘RA Community’. With this very special week comes a very special Tabula RASA is-sue: the IntRAweek Special. Together with some first year students, the new Tabula RASA Board has worked hard putting this issue together. We hope it serves all first-year students well in remembering those spe-cial events of your very first week at RA.

When handed to you a short while ago, you might have re-alised the thinness of this spe-cial issue. Although designed to focus solely on intRAweek events, and therefore contain-

Introductioning not too many articles, we hope to make future Tabula RASA issues much larger. For that, we need your help! We need writers, stating their opinion(s) on virtually anything; section editors, to maintain the articles’ quality; and section designers, to come up with creative and catchy designs. Do you want to con-tribute to our very own stu-dent newspaper? Do you have something to enlighten the whole RA Community with? Send us an e-mail at [email protected]!

A warm welcome to all of you first year students, we wish all of you, together with all second- and third year stu-dents, the best of luck for the fall 2012 semester!

Best wishes,Klaas-Henk BinnendijkOn behalf of the Tabula

Some Do’s and Dont’s

By Sabina WeistraTabula RASA

Yet another academic year at the Roosevelt Academy has started and the members of the Class of 2015 have already shown to be die-hard party lovers, even some love-affairs have seen the light. Yet, the most interesting part is still to be established: how is their academic performance? Approximately one week ago, almost two hundred excited new brains could be spotted lost in classrooms. Here follows a nice piece of advice for all of them.

During a nice walk around the market square in a quest for food, professors Morris and Aiken caught the attention of a curious Tabula RASA journal-ist and had to postpone the call of their stomach to answer her questions.According to the professors, a quality that students should not miss in their academic career is the ability to be open-minded but most importantly to be willing “to be here”, as Profes-sor Aiken put it, supporting his statement by referring to philosopher Epictetus. Roos-evelt Academy is in fact a small community where studying is

not all that matters: the beauty of this institution comes with the fact that students engage in activities that go beyond their courses. Sports, theatre, debates, school newspaper and all the activities that serve to improve our system find a fertile ground in our students’ minds. When questioned about an object students should never leave at home, the answers differ greatly: Professor Mor-ris lets her artistic side come to light and advises every student to always carry pen and paper. You never know when the in-spiration to become the mod-ern Dante will arrive. Instead, Professor Aiken shows his pragmatic nature by capturing the very essence of the Dutch weather: he advices everyone to always carry an umbrella! For obvious reasons, his first thought of carrying a lucky rabbit’s foot was immediately ruled out. What is the key to a successful life, concerning both academic and non-academic aspects? Setting specific goals and never lose sight of them: know where you are and where you are going. The humanistic nature of these two professors cul-minates in a last meaningful advice: “Hard work takes you in places where no hard work will not, in all circumstances.”

The GoodJosefien: “I really enjoyed

the last part of the nightwalk! My “brother” Miguel had a lot of energy and was really fun-ny.”

Pippa: “I thought the sports-day was a lot of fun. I like sports a lot, so this was a good event!”

Vincent and Marvin: “It was good to meet all these new peo-ple in Intraweek.”

Sjoerd: “The parties were awesome! Yeeaah buddyyy!”

The Good,The Bad

The Bad and The UglyPippa:”The Nightwalk was

way too long and many people were too tired and cold for it.”

Jeffrey: “Unfortunately I got ‘Dirty Nick’s’ room, so that was quite an unpleasant sur-prise.”

Vincent: “Some of the ac-tivities were a bit too childish for my taste, and Sportsday should have had some more serious sports.”

Marvin: “The beachwalk was too long for my taste, we could have done it in a lot shorter time! By the time we got to the beach the good weather was gone.”

Test Panel

4. Seventy-Seven

This is the place to be; the bar most of the students go to. It is fairly small, yet very cozy. You can attend the annual Primus Festivus over here, which is a party organized by fraternity Erodios and sorority Illicio at the beginning of every fall semester. We can assure you it is worth a visit: this fairly small bar makes a good place to dance a little, but have normal conversations as well. And as some of us superheroes proved in intRAweek: the bar stools can be stood on, half naked.

Pro: A lot of students, nice musicCon: Fairly smallGrade: 8.9

5. Bommel

This café is similar to ‘t Fust, and is – despite it being the closest to RA – not really the place students usually go. Nevertheless, you will be able to find some RA students drinking beer, and meeting for whatever reason, every now and then. For dancing, this is not particularly the place to go to, but it will suffice when you are looking for ‘gezelligheid’. Whenever you want to play the game ‘Stef Stuntpiloot’ (Loop-ing Louis) over here, just call Bart van Gent and Laurens van Gestel, or send them a request on Facebook. Pro: Have nice conversations, music is not too loud, nice loca-tionCon: No dancingGrade: 7

6. Geere

This bar, near Koestraat, has a nice atmosphere. Nevertheless, this judgment might be biased because of the chugging com-petition going on over here. Although one had to buy beer oneself, superheroes got the chance to chug Jupiler within five seconds. The Tabula RASA

This intRAweek’s pub crawl was bound to be a success. During the night of August 21st, the picturesque streets of Middelburg were filled with young superheroes roam-ing around the town. Little did those superheroes know that their true powers would be unleased, having drunk the mighty elixir of joy. Some may argue that the super-power called ‘remembrance’ would worsen because of the elixir, but as our experience has taught us, the elixir made the young superheroes do things no single person will ever for-get. Especially not when these freshmen take off their shirts and dance. Although it was not possible to enjoy the pubs as much as people would have liked to, due to the insanely short amounts of spendable time at each pub, and the ‘beverage discounts’ offered instead of free drinks, our superheroes made the best out of this evening. Or in the case of the families ‘Batman’ and ‘Aquaman’, other people in Middelburg were entertained as well. Isn’t it just epic when freshmen start dancing on top of bar stools – half naked – while belting a superhero-themed alteration of Bohemian Rhapsody? For those students out there who were not – for whatever reason – capable of fully ex-periencing the bars, the Ta-bula RASA Test Panel would proudly like to help fill in the gaps. (Caution: Reviews may be slightly biased, due to the Panel’s wholehearted dedica-tion to the task at hand: provid-ing truthful and honest reviews of the food and the one, or two, or three… or ten drinks being chugged, and ‘tested’)For further information, check out the table. The Tabula RASA Test Panel decided to include the three most common con-sumptions at Dutch bars: beer, wine, and ‘bitterballen’. A note to all the international stu-dents; if you have not tasted a ‘bitterbal’ yet, make sure you get to it!

1. Desafinado

The drink the students got of-fered was one of Desafinado’s (twenty-eight) specialties: ‘Lange Jan Beer’. This some-what light, yet tasty, and herby beer is a must have at night when the idyllic view on the Lange Jan is at its best. This beer will also do very well during a warm summer day or when enjoyed with live jazz or blues in the background. Desafinado is a nice bar to chill out with friends, but might not be equipped adequately if you like to party hard.

Pro: Live music, nice beer, awe-somely decorated barCon: No dancingGrade: 7.5

2. ‘t Fust

All there is to say about this bar is that its interior and music are very nice and cozy; and that it provides a perfect place to hang out with friends. Playing pool and gambling is possible and smoking is allowed in the designated area. ‘t Fust is the ‘local pub around the corner’: nothing special, but a fun place to hang out every once in a while.

Pro: Nice music (and for smok-ers: a smoking area)Con: Not a student bar in par-ticular Grade: 7

3. Tympaan

Tympaan is quite nice, but not very noticeable. Also, all they provided was a free shot (read: orange lemonade), but only once you bought a drink. Nev-ertheless, its location is very decent, being on the corner of ‘the’ block, and it is a nice starter for a pub crawl.

Pro: Nice locationCon: Not very noticeableGrade: 5

Test Panel managed to chug it in two – yes, two – seconds. This may not be the place to be for students, but it is not bad at all.

Pro: Nice interior, very spa-cious Con: Not a student hotspotGrade: 6,9

7. Underground

This hipster place is actually quite nice. Sometimes, you will find live music over here, and it is a nice place to hang out when you are with some friends in need of deep conversation. The atmosphere is cozy, and they serve – according to the ladies – nice cocktails. The beverages they gave our brave superhe-roes tasted like slush puppies, but contained the strengthen-ing elixir, nonetheless.

Pro: ‘Gezelligheid’ with an alternative edge Con: Not particularly a student hotspotGrade: 7

8. De Heeren

Only during the weekends this place can be nice, and full. The bar’s pretty big and you’ll enjoy yourself dancing all night. De Heeren, being right next to the adopted student bar Bumpers, makes this place less popular among students, though.

Pro: Nice music, nice interior, quite spacious, filled in the weekendsCon: Not particularly a student hotspotGrade: 7.4

9. Bumpers

Student bar Barrel’s substitute is doing pretty well. Although you cannot buy beer for €1,10 anymore, this bar is extremely fun when it is filled with RA students. The flashlight party over there was a great success, and the music might even be slightly better than it was in Barrel.

Pro: Nice music, packed with students every now and then, different sections to go toCon: It will get EXTREMELY hotGrade: 8.8

To conclude, the Tabula RASA Test Panel reckons going to Seventy-Seven is the best thing to do when you want to start going out. Too bad the bars ‘De Rooie Oortjes’, ‘De Mug’, and ‘Mambo’s’ were not included in the pub crawl, as those places are quite popular among students as well. Although you may find many 40+ people in ‘De Rooie Oortjes’ (especially in the section on the right), the section on the left is quite nice too, when opened. This is one of the few places open until 04:00 AM. Furthermore, ‘De Mug’ is a student hotspot for those who want to enjoy the godly ‘Notenwijn’(€3,-) – its specialty. Even those with a ‘nut allergy’ may drink this tasty beverage containing around 15% alcohol, because it’s made of the cores of peach-es. And as a last resort Mam-bo’s is recommended, although Barrel and De Rooie Oortjes will do perfectly fine too! Mambo’s is the ‘après-ski bar’ and is very nice when you’re completely wasted. After a few games of kingscup, beer pong, and ‘Stef Stuntpiloot’ this is the place to go. Who says going out in Middelburg is completely impossible? We beg to differ.

Comparison Table Pubs

Bar Beer Wine Bitterbal1 €2.00 €3.00 €0.772 €2.10 €3.00 €0.443 €2.10 €3.50 €0.504 €2.00 €2.70 €0.695 €2.10 €3.00 €0.536 €2.10 €3.00 €0.597 €2.50 €2.80 NA8 €2.00 €3.00 NA9 €1.50 €2.50 NA

In this table you can find the bars (the number corresponds with the bar in the article), the price per ‘beer’ and ‘wine’ you would order, and the price per ‘bitterbal’. Normally, bitterbal-len come in a pack of eight.

THE FLASH

Parents’ Perspective

IntRAweek from the par-ents’ perspective. Their best friends? Goats and energy drinks.

The class of 2015 has already amazed everyone with its enthusiasm and its ability to survive with so little sleep during such an energy-con-suming intRAweek. But what about those who guided them through this experience, what about their parents?

Taking care of ten children is not an easy task, especially with a group of students like our dear first year students, who have shown to be so ac-tive and willing to try nearly everything. Throughout the intRAweek we have seen the colour on the parents’ cheeks fade away and some voices occasion-ally got lost on the beach, or in haunted forests.. Looking around during one of the breaks we could see parents lying on the ground, cover-ing the puffiness under their eyes with dark sun glasses. When asked if they would do

very well, showing how being a parent can be an experience also for the second- or third- years, making them bond with each other. “We have a very nice family and Nela and I, my wife, are getting along really well” affirms Esther enthusiastically, probably fuelled by the excess of energy drinks rushing through her veins.

Bonding processes between parents and children defi-nitely were solidified through all moments of fun and stress. For example, even though everyone left the beach with sore feet, the walk there turned out to be a great success. “I think the best moment of this week was when we finally arrived at the beach!” confesses Esther. Certainly both parents and kids, including the occasional goat on a leash, have enjoyed their walk together. Whether this positive interpretation of the hours-long walk is shared by the goat as well remains unclear..

it again these brave parents’ answer was clear: absolutely! “It was easy to bond with our children! We were pretty lucky” says mother Isolde with a hoarse voice. When I asked her if the hoarseness of her voice could possibly be the result of too much shouting against her kids, she giggles and denies, “Even though I normally don’t lose my voice that easily, so this is quite something.”Also the relationships be-tween husband and wife, wife and wife or husband and husband seem to progress

Later during the intRAweek, a fantastic, yet not too tummy-filling HAC Campus Dinner provided yet another oppor-tunity for family members to get close to each other. After all, it is commonly known that breaking (freshly or-dered pizza-)bread together makes all of us human-beings happier, and more open to socialising. So, did the parents learn any-thing from this experience? Most definitely they did. As Esther confirms in one last lesson: “I am sure now that I don’t want ten children!”

When I came to RA on my first day, I only had a vague idea concerning the in-tRAweek. I didn’t quite know what to expect from the people, either freshmen or senior students. But I dis-covered that a lot of people here are very open and down for some partying/chilling. In general, I liked the com-munal atmosphere that soon formed, inside my “family” and outside. At the first party in Bumpers, everybody was still a bit shy, but by the time we got to Schuttershof, the party really got going! I saw that there was a lot of effort being put into intRAweek by the organisers, and I really appreciate all the hard work

they did to make us feel welcome. Furthermore I enjoyed the dinners I had with family or other friends, and the spontaneous lunch/drinks with floormates. Right now I’m pretty happy to be studying at RA, and looking forward to the com-ing semester. I’m expect-ing a lot of work, but we all knew that when we signed up for RA. My guess is that the societies and social life will also keep us quite busy, so I don’t reckon there will be time left for boredom. I hope that everybody finds their way around the com-ing weeks and enjoys their time at RA!

My experiences of intRAweek

Superhero Competion

To create some feeling of competition during the intRAweek, the RASA Board divided all first year students into families, each represent-ing a so-called ‘superhero’. The goal of creating some competition definitely has been achieved, what a battle it was! Superheroes have been fighting each other the whole week in various ways: harass-ing unfortunate red-haired citizens; happily covering family members with pow-dery, coloured substances the ‘Indian’ way, to name a few.

Ultimately, the Wonderla-dies have shown some balls by kicking other families’ buttocks. Yet, considering the fact a large portion of their infamous intRAweek medals was earned by some of the family members just having shaved their heads, the real ‘superheroness’ factor of Wonderwoman is still to be determined. The search for the real Superhe-roes continues, perhaps the King of the Channel battle later this semester will show us some real (wo)men.

Although not on the map, this place is not too well-known highlight on which especially the non-Dutch students amongst us should not miss out on! This cheese farm sells homemade cheese for lower prices than in most supermarkets. Besides cheese, local products such as jams, beer and vegetables can also be found in this most fascinating location. In the summer they sell ice cream made at a so-called ice cream farm. Practi-cal detail: it is only a ten minute bike ride away from Eleanor (Adress: Prooi-jenseweg 26, Google: a (wo)man’s best friend).

a. Park behind Bagijnhof – for those busy yet sunny moments: study in the park!b. Harbour – for those loving shapes moving on water, check out Tha Burg’s old harbour. c. Kuiperspoort – one of the oldest streets in town, walk through its gate, and find yourself in a most idyllic place some centuries ago. It is even prettier when covered in snow.d. Abbey Square – most beautiful and peaceful square of this grand town, some times festivals are held here.

Pretty & Chill places

Some weeks ago, Middelburg was flooded with orange shirts and excited students. IntRAweek, that one week of the year for the new students to get to know Middelburg and the Roosevelt Acad-emy. Exciting for students of course, but how do Mid-delburg’s citizens experience this week? What do the locals think of the new students and the intRAweek in general? First year student Ruth Ver-hoeff took off to the streets, armed with pen and paper, to find out.

While some are irritated by the noise new students pro-duce after, for instance, a fun evening at Bumpers, other locals only noticed the orange shirts. Even though some citizens didn’t know about the intRAweek at all, most of the remaining interviewees like and support the initiative behind this week organised for new students. Besides more regular comments con-cerning the nuisance caused by students taking up space,

and them being loud in the streets, one citizen explicitly commented on the most fabulous looking intRAweek shirts. He found the orange creations to be “patriotic” and “easy to spot in the crowd.”

In general, the intRAweek passes by virtually unno-ticed by many of the respon-dents. This could partially be explained by the fact that some of them belong to this giant flock of tourists, all on

holiday-mode, and thus opinion-less. Yet considering the idea that we as students form a reasonable part of the almost 50.000 heads living in our small town, some improvements in the pro-motion department could be made. Nuisance wise, our intRAweek doesn’t cause too many frustrations apparent-ly, so congrats to the RASA Board and other students involved in the organisation: it was great!

Cheesefarm Schellach

Like any other country bordering the big water, the Netherlands has an on-going love affair with fresh fish. There is always plenty of fresh fish available in fish stands or fish shops, such as the one on the market square. Whilst kibbeling, mussles and shrimps are very popular, there is one particular fish that holds a very special place in the Dutch hearts: herring. The first catch of the year is widely celebrated in Scheve-ningen, with the Queen auc-

tioning off the first barrel of herring (this year, it went for a whopping 95,000 euro to benefit the Youth Sporting Fund). Perhaps its popular-ity has something to do with the peculiar way in which it is eaten. Akin to “koekhap-pen”, the Dutch dangle the fish above their opened mouths, holding it by the tail, until it finally reaches its destination in one single swoop. It is truly a sight you will not want to miss during your time here!

The intRAweek was such an exhausting event that you started hallucinating and felt attracted to a professor. To prevent yourself from actually doing this you must do some-thing useful, like dishes.

Some godparent made you take off your shirt during the pub-crawl for additional points. This sudden intimacy has led to some peculiar romantic developments within some families. Please keep in mind that incest is illegal.

The stars predict a bright future for you. Un-less you’re taking stats this semester.

The stars could clearly observe you when you participated in the night game. Being afraid of the dark is nothing to be ashamed of. Even though your parents aren’t here, there are enough house and floor mates to take care of you.

You were a little disappointed when you figured out that Bagijnhof 2 does not exist. Luckily, this didn’t mean that you had to go to Driewegenhof. Remember that Woongoed is your best friend.

After walking to the beach you felt even more invincible than the superhero of your family. This feeling will only come back after you have pulled your first all-nighter.

During the academic morning you could only stay awake for the hot chair of the AAC. You have been stalking him ever since. Today you will finally find out whether your relation with him will be romantic or just academic.

Your outfit for the “I’m glad I’m not” party was not the success that you hoped for. Please be inspired by your horoscope next time, and not by Google.

The inner sluttiness that you have discovered during intRAweek came as a surprise. Just like your crush on the RASA gingers.

Your English test didn’t go as well as you hoped. Spelling has always been difycult for you.

Your hangover was so bad that you have sworn to never drink again. Don’t worry: you will not keep this promise and your fellow students will love you for it.

You’ll never find love within the RA community, but you can still try to date some of the locals that are hanging out in Rooie Oortjes. Go there this Friday: you might get lucky.
