Principal’s Report

Welcome Back! Primary Students Return tomorrow (Friday 9

th).

Secondary Students Return

Monday 12th October – all Year 7 to 12 students return to on-site learning.

Some of the procedures for return to school include: Hand hygiene must be in place before, during and after classes. Physical distancing should be maintained wherever possible. Secondary students must wear correctly fitted face masks. Bandanas and scarves

are no longer acceptable for face coverings. Primary students are not required to wear face masks. Buses will resume all normal bus routes from Friday 9th October. Caf will be open from Friday 9th October. If your child is unwell, they must not attend school. If your child becomes unwell whilst at school, you will be contacted. Parents should not enter the school unless there are specific reasons to do so. If parents or visitors enter the building, they must follow sign-in and hygiene

guidelines. Excursions and camps are permissible for students outside the metropolitan area.

Funding Announcement After more than two years of pressing for funding to upgrade our school building, School Council received the good news from Mark Gepp, MLC for Mallee, earlier this week that we have been allocated $1,059,000 for “planning for upgrading Hopetoun P-12 College.” I am hoping to have more details on the specifics of the allocation so that I can share the information with Councillors at our meeting next Wednesday night. It is certainly good news that our school has been recognised as in need of significant building

upgrades. I hope to be able to provide you with more information in next week’s newsletter.

Progress Reports The last of our Remote Learning 2.0 Progress reports will be available on Compass tomorrow morning. These reports capture the work, attitude and attendance of students during week 10 of last term and the first days of term 4. There will be modified end-of-year reports provided in December.

School Review Our long awaited school review will take place over the next three weeks. The review was scheduled for term 1 but, due to the restrictions and changes throughout the year, we have been delayed until next week. The review will be led by Carol Every from VALAD Solutions and will involve our School Council President, Jamie Frankel, two school principals, Mr Munn from Kaniva and Mr Goodwin from Murtoa and Mr Ryan, a senior representative of the Department of Education. Members of our school leadership team will also be involved in the review. Some parents will be invited to a focus group in a few weeks’ time to get your views on the progress and areas for improvement. Students will also be part of a range of focus groups over the

next few weeks to gather their input on school improvement. School Reviews are rigorous examinations of school progress and improvements made over the past four years measured against goals and targets established in 2016. The Review also sets the goals, targets and strategies for improvement for our next four years.

Parent Survey The annual Parent Survey will be made available to many of you shortly. Despite the remote learning and the many changes throughout the year, the survey will go ahead. If you receive a link to the survey, please take time to respond.

Staffing Changes This term we welcome Sophie Thomas to Hopetoun P-12 College. Sophie will be with us this term and she will be working across various year levels providing additional support for students. Welcome Sophie. I also acknowledge the work of Suzi Hallam who has decided to retire from her education support role here at Hopetoun P-12 College. Thanks for your help, Suzi and all the best.

Mr Graeme Holmes

Principal

Policy Update Duty of Care Policy

“Duty of care” is a legal obligation that requires schools to take reasonable steps to reduce the risk of reasonably foreseeable harm, which can include personal injury (physical or psychological) or damage to property. To this end, Hopetoun P-12

College has a range of policies which address and respond to our duty of care to our students and staff. Examples of these policies include Yard Duty and Supervision, First Aid, Emergency Management and Occupational health and Safety. Staff understand that school activities involve different levels of risk and that particular care needs to be taken to support younger children and students with additional needs. We are also aware of the need to manage any risk which may arise through external providers and through visitors to our school site.

A range of policies associated with duty of care can be access through our school website: https://hopetounp12.vic.edu.au/
