The City of Joy was in for a unique treat on Monday, 21st April, 2014, as a buzzing crowd of hundreds of art enthusiasts walked into the Chemould Art Gallery, Park Street to celebrate the new artistic crea-tions of 22 plus bright upcoming painters, sketch-artists, sculptors and photographers across Kolkata. The event in question was the Art Fair II, 2014 which was curated by the eminent artist Miss. Sufia Khatoon. The 5 day-long event, starting from 21st April, 2014 and continuing up to Friday, 25th April, 2014 saw the faces of various ce-lebrities and other artists alike taking varied interests in the fields of art, live music, poetry sessions and art work-shops, among so much more.

A Week for the Art Lovers

Art Fair II was the sec-ond installment of the Art Fair 2013, also curated by Sufia Khatoon. Miss. Khatoon nar-rated to us that her previous Art Fair had been primarily motivated by social causes. With the proceedings of Art Fair 2013, organized in Octo-ber last year, Sufia was able

to fund the entire education cost of 31 slum kids. Sufia also informed us that the next Art Fair in the series is tenta-tively scheduled to be held in September this year.

On 21st April, the event was inaugurated with a grand opening speech by curator

and artist, Sufia Khatoon. The lamp was consequently lit by Imran Zaki, Suzette Jordan, Barun Chanda and Ridhima Ghosh. Many other celebri-ties such as the Radio legend RJ Jimmy Tangree, Shakun Trivedi, editor of ‘Wake’ mag-azine, Dishambar Newar, ed-itor of ‘Chhapte’ Newspaper,

and Vani Chawla and others were also seen to grace the event on the second day.

An artwork on display that really caught our fancy

Among all 22 artists and many crafters who displayed their creations, Younique Magazine caught exclusives with four such people whose individual artworks stood out in a stark contrast amidst the crowd:

1) AVEEK MUKHERJEE -A tattoo-artist-turned-painter, Aveek, whose regular can-vas is usually someone’s skin, started out with painting a month back for a Universi-ty competition and confess-es to have caught a fascina-tion for the brush ever since. His painting “ Painted Love “ proved to be an intriguing and refreshing piece of artwork.

2) MOUMITA GHOSH - This artist with her effusive painting of the Northern and Southern lights chose to de-pict a green hue in the vast night sky which in turn spoke volumes for itself and provid-ed the guests with a sense of soothing contentment and re-laxation.

3) ROHIT HEAL - Of all his art pieces that were displayed, Rohit’s “ Cata-clysm “, a realistic sketch of a freckled face, turned out to be the most eye-catching. This sketch-artist’s second piece “ The Girl “ was much lauded as well.

4) SUFIA KHATOON -The artist/writer and curator of this event, Sufia was kind enough to display some of her own art pieces along with that of the others. In this re-gard, it may be noted that she is currently one of the few art-ists in India who creates Pa-per Quelling paintings. Of her own paintings, “ Sukoon “ , “ My Wish “, and” Caught” were among those to receive an overwhelming response.

Other than paintings and sculptures, the art fair also pro-vided a platform where many budding musicians of the city showcased their talents. Vet-eran to the Art Fair, ‘ Tran-scendental Tunes ‘ played on the opening night of the event.

The third day started off with a poetry session followed up by an energetic musical performance as a talented group of college students, Ta-pasi Bhattacharya, Rohit Ga-nesh, Sankalan Samaddar, and Nirvik Nandy, took to the centre stage. On the fourth day, cu-rator of the event, Miss. Kha-toon organized a book signing

session of “Season of Love” which is an anthrology of 20 short stories by 20 writers from around the world, which also includes Sufia’s “In The Rain”. Following the book signing, ‘Forever Young’ played their soulful tunes to lend a musical note to the event and kept the stream of eager visitors enter-tained.

On the last day of the event, the audience were in for a grand treat as eminent ceramic artist, Joydeep Sarker displayed live, innumerable techniques of ce-ramic sculpting, and gave val-uable advice to the many art lovers present there. Overall, the event was deemed to be a huge success and was an open forum with the basic aim of so-cial interaction and showcasing of different genres of art work by forthcoming new artists.

The event also witnessed a special display of East-ern wear dresses and lehengas in bright and bold colours de-signed by the young artist, Miss. Farha Noor who modernised these traditional Indian dresses with unconventional patterns and ethnic block prints.

Be it Delhi, London, Tokyo or New York, traffic stops are a bane of the collective existence for drivers no matter whether we drive a luna or a Lamborghini. Sure, start stop systems and automatics do help, but we all know that even a single minute or two delay at each single traffic light can result in a huge chunk of increase in our overall travel time. Audi is claiming to have come up with a tech solution for this.

This new system called the “Audi Online traffic light recognition sys-tem” syncs with any city’s central traffic computer and reads their automat-ed signals. It counts down the time remaining until the next light change and dis-plays the information on the drivers information display screen. The driver can then discern whether he will be able to make it through the green light and preemptive-ly brake, avoiding abrupt stops.

It can also work with the start stop system to restart the engine a few seconds before the red light count-down ends.

This technology can help save significant amounts of fuels in city driving, increas-ing the overall fuel average which is music to the ears of our “kitna deti hai” mentality. Audi is currently testing this system in Berlin, Las Vegas and Verona.

Although it has claimed that the system is produc-tion ready and will be rolled out in various countries de-pending on pending govern-ment approval in the upcom-ing future. Let’s hope our

country’s traffic infrastruc-ture get itself streamlined by the time we get a chance to enjoy this feature.

When it comes to food, this city has more than enough variety to offer. Innumerable restaurants and shops are located across all corners of Kolkata for the food-loving people to go out and experiment their taste buds upon. However, the newly-established food joint ‘A Square Meal ‘ is serving delicacies that surpass many of the city’s well known and expensive restaurants.

Located just behind Jatin Das Park, this fast-food joint is suitably-priced to suit the daily budgets of the college going students hailing from Ashutosh College nearby. Although it serves Italian, Continental, Mughlai and North Indian cuisines, A Square Meal’s South Indian section had our food critic totally squared out! The food joint also feeds their customers the rare and mouth-watering Non-Veg Dosa. The restaurant is also coming up with a rolls and biryani section. This younique variety of cuisine pulls crowds of all ages from various corners of the city and leaves them craving for more.

Going with its nomenclature of the restaurant, the menu is filled with nutritious and balanced combos and items perfect for breakfast, lunch, super and dinner. Younique Magazine hand picks half a dozen dishes, the sight of which shall make your mouth water.

We started off with the continental section by ordering a cheese veg burg-er filled with a delicious patty, onions, lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber. The burger was overflowing with cheese and the sesame seeded bun tasted fresh and tender. With every bite into the lovely burger we found Multinational Food Chains to be overhyped and expensive.

Following the burger, the chicken sandwich kept us going for more. Though non grilled the layer of chicken was warm and zesty. The sand-wich could taste better with mayonnaise and corn, which could be added on demand.

Then our critic sunk their teeth in some Italian. The chicken barbecue pizza tasted very homely and preservative-free. The pizza, well baked from all sides, had a fluffy yet crunchy base. Filled with small chunks of chicken, capsicum and cheese, the pizza had a raw sweet, sour and spicy taste due to a special and secret in-house paste used by the chef. The pizzas, standard or large sized are reasonably priced and filling for 1 or 2 respectively.

Next, our critic opted authentic Bengali dish that is surely worth mention-ing. The fish Kabiraji made from Bhetki fish, was well sized and satisfac-tory. The potato filling jived with herbs and spices in the centre brought a great texture to entire dish. The deepfried and tasty egg endoskeleton was brown and rich in flavour. Every bite of the cutlet burst flavours of different hues in the mouth. The well presented cutlet might tempt you, but be cautious of delicacy of the cutlet being soft at the core.

The legendary chicken keema dosa @ A Square Meal

At last, the most anticipated and alluring dish was served, the Chicken Keema Masala Dosa. Being one of the very few restaurants in Kolkata serving the non-veg dosas, A Square Meal did not disappoint. The keema brought a great texture to the entire dish, almost re-inventing south In-dian food for our critic. The spicy juicy chicken blends with the potato filling with ease. The dosa sized well over 18 inches would seduce any non-vegetarian. The side serves of the dish, garlic chutni, coconut chut-ni and sambar was an added punch for the tongue. The garlic chutni or garlic paste was rather refreshing, comprising of exotic herbs and spices. The spicy sambar with pinch of sweet, made our mouth water.

Beverages like juices and smoothies are perfect for all coming in to pass time. Amongst all, cold coffee with Ice-cream deserves special mention. It is a must have for the sweet toothed.

The ice creams there are a must have as well. Chocolate and Tooti-Frooti.

The restaurant maintains a bright and exotic ambience with red orange and golden. The cutlery which contrasts the dining table brings out a certain aspect of the food missed by the tongue. A very well utilization of space is noticed and the hygiene factor is strictly maintained. But there are no arrangements for a washroom. The food joint serves delicacies at very affordable rates. For Rs 400 the joint is filling for 2.
