€3.2 MILLION PROJECT FOR DENNY SITE ANOTHER BOOST FOR TRALEELabour TD Arthur J. Spring has welcomed the announcement by Labour Minister Alan Kelly that funding has been secured by the Department of the Environment from the EU Urban Development Fund which will transform the old Denny Factory site in Tralee.

The Tralee Town Centre West Urban Development Project involves the development of the ‘Denny Factory Site’, demolishing existing derelict buildings, constructing a linear amenity park and improving the pedestrian links between the site and the town centre.

“I am delighted to see progress in dealing with the derelict Denny site which was kindly gifted to the people of Tralee by Kerry Group and I look to its development as a significant civic amenity for the town which is improving with each of our government capital announcements “ Deputy Spring commented.

Deputy Spring also commented that significant improvements are being made to the town through the Capital Programme including the Integrated Plan of the €15 million development at the IT Tralee, the €6 million Advanced Manufacturing Facility, the €2.2million Smarter Travel Plan aswell as the Wetlands Project which has already been delivered by this government for Tralee. The proposal involves the demolition and clearing of former Denny factory which consists of a site of about 2.3 acres and the preparation of an overall masterplan which will guide the redevelopment of this brownfield site. At least 30% of the site will be laid out as a public park and adjoining streets will be upgraded to improve linkages to the rest of the town centre. The project will contribute to improving the urban environment, revitalising and regenerating Tralee and is consistent with the objectives of the European Development Fund which will provide €1.5 million towards the project. The remainder of the finding will be matched by local authority funding.

Holiday from Hell!I booked in Ireland a package holiday in a popular sunny destination for Christmas 2015 and it was the holiday from hell – I felt like I’m a celebrity get me out of here combatting dirt, a horrible apartment, a profusion of what was in fairness fabulous flora outside the apartment and fauna inside notably a couple of rats and cockroaches who had made the apartment their home. The complex was inhabited by young beer drinkers who thought they were in Ibiza uncovered and disco music blared 24 hours. When I approached the

company representative to complain they said there was nothing they could do as all their other holiday apartments were booked out. It was high season at that time of year. What can I do about this the holiday which cost myself and my partner €1800 and we came back exhausted. John McNulty - Galway

This is a classic scenario for which the Package Holidays and Travel Trade Act 1995 is geared for as the holiday is in a foreign location and it would be very hard to sue abroad but this act makes the package holiday provider/travel agent/tour operator at home liable in relation to holidays which are not up to standard. A package holiday is defined in the act a pre-arranged holiday, which includes travel, accommodation and a tourist service/activity lasting over 24 hours. The obligations on the tour operator are to provide a contract with essential details/advance information for the holiday as set out in the act. This contract should include the complaints procedure, which should be followed if there is a problem. It will usually provide that if there is a complaint on the holiday that you should complain initially to the local rep or organizer in the area of the holiday. They should sort the problem out but if they don’t it is important to have evidence and this may mean John should have taken photos/videos of the problem. John should also lodge a complaint with his tour operator within 28 days of coming back from the holiday. If the tour operator still does not sort the problem out as long as the cost of the holiday is below €2000 which it is in this case then John could bring a claim to the small claims court which is a quick easy and efficient method of getting a full or partial refund on the holiday which is an enforceable amount if it is awarded by the court. If the cost of the holiday is above €2000 then it is likely that the holiday contract provides that the matter be referred to Arbitration.

New hair-care Routine 2016

(part 2)Last week we began a piece on the importance of having a routine when it comes to your hair. We discussed washing and drying the hair. Today we will conclude our routine.

1. Styling your hairAt ‘’The Barber…’’ we would advise all our clients to use Layrite pomade. It holds like a gel and washes out with just water. Layrite Super Hold is a pomade with high hold and medium shine, and Layrite Cement is a higher hold and low shine. When styling with a pomade less is usually more depending on the look your trying to achieve. The more you mess around with your hair the easier it will become to know just how much product is enough for you.

2. Comb your hair after applying the productIf you like to wear the top of your hair sleeked back or wear a tidy quiff on top you should use a comb. Apply the Layrite to the top and spread it with your hands and then comb it through. Spreading it with a comb will give you a more defined sleek look• If your hair is kinky or curly use a wide toothed comb to get rid of any tangles

3. Blow-dry your hair sparinglyFor some hairstyles you have to use a hairdryer. However, doing it everyday will start causing hair damage. Only use your hair dryer when its needed and for occasions . If you are having a lazy day, allow your hair to dry naturally.• When drying your hair point the dryer in the direction of hair growth to help your hair lie flat.• If you want more volume point against the direction of hair growth as you dry it.

That’s our tips and advice to a healthy hair care routine. If you have any other questions feel free to ask one of our barbers.

TRANSITION YEAR STUDENTS LAUNCH SCHOOLS CREDIT UNION IN TRALEETen transition year students from Mercy Secondary School Mounthawk launched their School’s Credit Union on Friday. The Schools Credit Union will operate every Friday at lunch time outside the school library and is open to all students and staff in Mercy Secondary School. Speaking to Suzanne Ennis, Marketing & Business Development Manager “It’s been a busy few weeks for the transition years, they went through interviews and in-house training with us and have worked very hard in setting up their credit union in their school. It’s a great opportunity for the students themselves to learn new skills and experience the operational side of financial services, it’s great for us at Tralee Credit Union to be able to educate and showcase the credit union ethos in their school and for all students and staff to be able to access credit union services in their school on a weekly basis”. John Holmes elected Schools Credit Union Manager said “we had a busy launch and were delighted with the response from everyone. We did Face painting which went down a treat, we had Ellie the Elephant, Tralee Credit Union’s Youth mascot, plenty of information and freebies. We hope we will get a lot of support from everyone in the school from this Friday by opening a credit union account and saving with us every week from now until May. It’s the ideal place to save for a school tour, event or occasion”.

MAGUIRE’S BUTCHERS OF CAHERSLEE DONATE PAINTING TO NEW SCHOOLYESTERDAY was a landmark day for St Brendan’s NS in Blennerville, as the old school was demolished after 84 years of educating generations of locals.A former pupil decided to mark the opening of the new school with a presentation which, no doubt, will find a place in the great new building.“My sisters, Michelle and Aisling and I were past pupils at the old school in Blennerville, and have great memories,” said Liam Maguire of Maguire’s Butchers in Caherslee.

“Our two sons Jack and Harry are attending the school so we decided to present the school with a painting of Blennerville in the old days before the windmill was restored and showing the workhouse plus the seven arches in the old bridge. It was painted by a Lohercannon artist Florence O’Connor,” said Liam. A nice gesture during changing times in St Brendan’s.

sons Harry and Jack.

ROCK CLUB REJUVENATED AT COACHING CONFERENCE: An informative and helpful coaching conference was held by Tralee’s Austin Stack Club in The Meadowlands Hotel last Saturday. This important event was well attended by club coaches and officials and the general feeling at the end of an exciting day’s series of lectures and demonstrations was that Gene O’Donnell and his back-up team had successfully organised a worthwhile and beneficial project that would/will move the club up a gear in matters of coaching and management. The good atmosphere of the occasion gave a wonderful feeling and the camaraderie was a joy to experience! The Black’n’Amber Brigade looks forward to the coming season of leather and of ash with enthusiasm unconfined! Among the speakers were Pat Flanagan of Kerry and ITT fame, Joe O’Connor (Ireland’s Fittest Family/ Limerick GAA), Eoin Burns (who spoke on ‘Breathing’) and our own Roy Guerin who is a leading Irish Paralympian. Éacht oibre! B’fhiú an dua! Adrienne McLoughlin and her trustworthy ‘Canon’ pay their respects! (Brian Caball)

NEW AND DESIGNER CLOTHING AT A FRACTION OF THE RETAIL

PRICE! We’ve had lots of really excellent clothing donations this week, most of which arrived with original price tags still attached for those of you who love a good bargain. I’ve created a rail specifically for new and designer garments which will make it even easier to find that hidden gem! We currently have a gorgeous black and white dotted blouse from Coast for €8.50 (retail price €49) and for the gentlemen we have a Superdry jacket for €45 (retail price €120) – both are brand new with tags, see pictures below! Our shop couldn’t run without the help of our fabulous volunteers who work really hard to process donations and keep our shop floor organised welcoming. We currently have two young adults with Down Syndrome as part of our team who come in two days per week for a couple

of hours and undertake a variety of tasks. In the back room they are learning how to sort garments, price books and find saleable items in our collection of bric a brac while on the shop floor they are

learning the basics of merchandising, learning how to use the till and most importantly interacting with you! So not only is our shop supporting Down Syndrome Kerry, all money raised in the shop stays in Kerry, it is also an excellent environment for our young adults to gain vital skills that will pave the way to future employment. It has been a busy week at 321 and we’d like to say a HUGE thank you to those who visited us for the first time! We really hope you enjoy your purchases and come back to see us again soon. Love Lna

Hello my beautiful friends! I hope you enjoyed my ‘Best of Beauty 2015’ last week, if you missed it you can now catch it on www.traleeadvertiser.ie in the ‘Read Online’ Section. This week as promised, I will be talking SKINCARE! So let’s get into it…

MY SKINCARE ROUTINEI love makeup, and good makeup starts with a good base. I attended a Kiehls Skincare event in Dublin in October, and I was really intrigued. Kiehls uses a lot of natural ingredients and Kylie Jenner has named their Avocado Eye-Cream as one of her must haves! I went to the store in Dundrum and had a skin test where my oil levels and hydration were tested. I thought I had combination skin, more on the dry side, turns out I’m oilier! So I got a few products and I am OBSESSED. It is important to note, if you want to change your skin routine, DO NOT change it all at once, this will cause what’s known as a ‘De-tox Breakout’ due to using so many new products at once. Introduce one product first, then another a few days later and so on. So here’s what I use and what ‘my routine’ looks like in order of what I do…

Exfoliator: Kiehls Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser. I use this to exfoliate every 2-3 days, there is no need to exfoliate every day. This contains Amazonian White Clay and it gently exfoliates to help eliminate surface toxins and it helps reduce the appearance of pores! This is great for me as I have quite big and noticeable pores, I have definitely noticed a difference. You also only need the tiniest amount, it goes such a long way. I just wet my face with luke-warm water, apply it to my nose, chin and cheeks and massage in in circular motions. And then I rinse off with lukewarm water, not hot! It’s €21.50, which isn’t a crazy expensive price, when it comes to your skin it’s worth it.

Cleanser: Kiehls Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash. After exfoliating (if I am exfoliating that day) I use this. I only got the sample size when I purchased other products but I will definitely be purchasing! The sample size is only 30ml and I have been using it daily for about a month, and it just ran out. That shows how little product you have to use. The cleanser gently lifts away impurities, dirt, and oil without stripping skin, which means it’s safe for sensitive skin. It costs €27 for the 230ml bottle or you can get a 75ml bottle to try for like €10. The 230ml bottle will easily last at least 3 months so it’s good value for money.

Toner: Kiehls Ultra Facial Oil-Free Toner. Am I the only one who never used toner? When the skincare specialist suggested it I thought she was just trying to get me to spend more money, which isn’t too hard. But she went on to explain all the benefits of using a toner such as restoring the pH balance of your skin, having a balanced pH level means your skin is less prone to oiliness and infection, creating a more vibrant and smoother appearance. Pore shrinkage and tighten-ing, facial toners tighten your facial pores, allowing fewer oils and toxins to settle into the skin. This creates a fresher, cleaner and less oily appearance while preventing acne. Hydration and Nourishment, Facial toners provide hydration to your skin, which is essential to maintaining elasticity, smoothness, moisture and a more youthful appearance. Proper skin hydra-tion reduces the signs of aging skin and provides an effective base for the application of facial cosmetics. So with all those benefits, it is SO important to use a toner. I have 100% noticed a difference in my skin since introducing toner. After cleansing, I pat my face dry with a towel and then apply the toner on a cotton pad all over my skin. This toner is alcohol free and oil free, alcohol free so it does not dry out the skin which is very important when buying a toner. If you don’t have a toner as part of your skincare routine, I highly recommend you start. The 250ml bottle is €18 and I have been using it every day, twice a day since I got it at the start of December and I’m nowhere near halfway through it yet!

Moisturiser: Ultra Facial Oil-Free Lotion & Ultra Facial Cream. Because I have oily acne prone skin, I was recom-mended use an oil-free moisturiser. This is a light-weight, non-greasy, moisturising face lotion. I apply it immediately after the toner. If my skin is a little on the dry side for some reason, I use the Ultra Facial Cream. The lotion is €27.50 and the cream starts at €28.50.

Bexblah Fitness!HELLO MY FIT FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING A GREAT WEEK. I AM NOW HOME FROM TORONTO, UNFORTUNATELY, BUT I CAME HOME WITH A WHOLE NEW GAME PLAN. On the plane home I read Khloe Kardashian’s ‘Strong Looks Better Naked’ and I cannot recom-mend it enough. I know that the Kardashians aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but honestly, this book is AMAZING. It goes through all the aspects of being the best you, mentally, emotionally and physi-cally. She talks about how, if you want to change your body, it’s a process and NOTHING happens over night or in 10 days or through a detox tea. And it got me thinking… This time last year I said ‘This is it, 2015 is MY year’… I went on to set a goal, my 21st birthday in April, I lost two dress sizes, lots of inches and felt great! What happened after that? I didn’t set a goal and felt like I was in limbo, I had nothing to strive towards and without noticing at the time, slipped back into what I did before. I was working 6 days a week from June-September in a Deli, I used the long days as an excuse and ‘was too busy’ to set more goals, or even notice what was happening. Then for the rest of the year I just fell off the bandwagon. BUT THAT’S OVER. I just wanted to give you a little back story. ANYWAY, back to now. I realised that if I want to change, I have to make small goals, monthly goals, ahead of time. Instead setting one big goal, achieving it, and not having a plan in motion for after the goal is reached. So, That’s exactly what I did.

I got a notebook, which is going to be my 2016 Fitness/Goals Bible. On the first page I wrote out WHY I want to change my body and HOW I plan on doing it. On the next page I wrote ‘Why do I want this (Refer to when feeling shit/demotivated)? And under that I wrote a little paragraph, promising myself to stick to my goals and signed it!Next I wrote ‘Phase One’ with the next 4 weeks spaced out. Under each week I wrote goals and in week 4’s slot I wrote to re-evaluate my goals, food-plan and measurements. I started with small achievable goals, here’s what my first month looks like, if you want to start too maybe this will help.

PHASE 1 – 19/1/16 TO 16/2/16Week 1: GET INTO IT!Use My Fitness Pal to track food.Re-join the gym. 2 litres of water daily.

Week 2: ROUTINE!Gym in the morning where possible.3 litres of water daily.Go to the gym 4 times.

Week3: STEP IT UP!Gym in the morning. 5 gym sessions at least.

Week4: PHASE ONE COMPLETE!Re-evaluate food plan. Take measurements.

The ubiquitous pub dish of meat and potatoes is so classically comforting and delicious that it’s almost a cliché, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make it over and over again this winter

HEALTHY RECIPES Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read

Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a large pan. Add the onion, celery and carrot and cook over low heat until softened, about 12 minutes. Add the turkey and cook, stirring, until heated through. Add the gravy and cook until bubbling. Remove from the heat, stir in the parsley and sage and season with salt and pepper. Transfer the filling to a 9-by-12-inch baking dish and let cool. Preheat the oven to 180°. In a bowl, blend the mashed white and sweet potatoes with the chives. Season the mashed potatoes with salt and pepper and beat in the egg. Spread the potatoes over the filling and brush the top with the melted butter. Bake in the upper third of the oven for about 30 minutes, or until the topping is lightly browned and the filling is bubbling. Let the pie stand for about 10 minutes before serving

Preheat the oven to 175°. Heat the oil in an enameled cast-iron casserole. Season the lamb with salt and pepper; cook over high heat until browned all over, 15 minutes. Transfer to a plate. Add the carrot, onion, garlic, an-chovies, capers and tomatoes to the casserole. Cook over moderate heat, stirring, until lightly browned, 8 minutes. Add the Madeira and bring to a boil; add the stock and bring to a boil. Return the lamb to the casserole; season with salt and pepper. Cover and braise in the oven for 1 hour, until tender. Cook the potatoes in boiling salted water until tender, 20 minutes. Drain and cook the potatoes in the pot to evaporate any water. Add the butter and buttermilk and mash. Season with salt and pepper. Raise the oven heat to 190°. Set the casserole over high heat and boil until the juices reduce by half, about 15 minutes. Mash the garlic into the juices. Spoon the stew into six 1 1/2-cup ramekins; set on a sturdy baking sheet. Mound the potatoes on top; bake for 25 minutes, until browned in spots. Let rest 20 minutes, then serve

TWO VIOLINISTS Two old violinists were talking to each other, and one said to the other, “If I die before you, I will find a way to tell you if there is an orchestra in Heaven”. The other violinist says he would do the same. Sure enough, the first violinist dies. A few days pass, and the first violinist appears before the second. “I have returned just as I said, but I have good news and bad news”. “Give me the good news.” says the second violinist. “The good news is there is a magnificent orchestra in Heaven, filled with the best players to ever live. In fact, there is a concert tomorrow.” The second violinist is delighted by the news, and asks “what could possibly be the bad news?” the first violinist replies, “You’re playing the solo.”

JOKES FROM OUR READERS (This week from Ned Barrett)

GOD ENJOYS A GOOD LAUGH!There were 3 good arguments that Jesus was Black:1. He called everyone brother.2. He liked Gospel.3. He didn’t get a fair trial.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Italian:1. He talked with His hands.2. He had wine with His meals.3. He used olive oil.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was a Californian:1. He never cut His hair.2. He walked around barefoot all the time.3. He started a new religion.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that

Jesus was an American Indian:1. He was at peace with nature.2. He ate a lot of fish.3. He talked about the Great Spirit.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Irish:1. He never got married.2. He was always telling stories.3. He loved green pastures.

BYE BYE WIFE!!“Ever since we got married, my wife has tried to change me. She got me to stop drinking, smoking, and running around until all hours of the night. She taught me how to dress well, enjoy the fine arts, gourmet cooking, classical music, even how to invest in the stock market,” said the man to his friend.”Sounds like you may be bitter because she changed you so drastically,” remarked the friend.”I’m not bitter. Now that I’m so improved, she just isn’t good enough for me

ONE FOR YOU, ONE FOR ME!Two guys are playing golf. The women in front of them are really taking their time and are slowing the men up.So one man says to his friend, “I’m gonna go ask those ladies if we can play through.”He starts walking, but about halfway there, he turns around. When he gets back, his friend asks what happened. He replies, “One of those women is my wife, and the other is my mistress. Why don’t you go talk to them?”So the second man starts to walk over. He gets halfway there and turns around. When he gets back, his friend asks, “Now what happened?”To this he replies, “Small world.”

WONDERING WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR UNWANTED CHRISTMAS GIFTS?Lorna from the new ‘ 321 ‘Store in High street has some good adviceThe season of giving is well and truly over and we are all surrounded by those bits and bobs we don’t really need, want and very often don’t actually like. You could leave them to collect dust and eventually they’ll make their way into the bin or you could drop them off to your local charity shop where they will be sold and benefit a really great cause. Many of the charity shops in Tralee depend solely on the generosity of the local community and by donating new or good quality clothing and bric a brac you can really make a difference! One of the biggest challenges faced by charity shops is the quality of donations they receive, particularly bric a brac, in that items may be damaged and thus not sellable. The shops are then left with no choice but to dispose of these as waste, costing the charity thousands of euro each year so it’s really important to think about what you are donating! Your unwanted gifts are ideal donations because they are often unused, good quality items and tend to sell very quickly and not only are you doing your bit for charity, you are getting rid of those things you didn’t actually want in the first place without feeling guilty about it!

TRALEE CHAMBER ALLIANCE URGES ALL BUSINESSES TO TRY TO WIN A TIDY TOWNS MONTHLY AWARD IN 2016TRALEE Chamber Alliance is making an early bid to prepare Ireland’s Best Large Tourism Town for the 2016 Tidy Towns Competition with a view to retaining a gold medal and making a real challenge for the top prize.A new Tidy Towns Monthly Business Award has been launched by Tralee Chamber Alliance in association with Tralee Tidy Towns Group to help get Tralee into the best possible shape for success.Prizes, supplied by local artists and craft makers, will be presented to the monthly winners who will be chosen from any of the following categories:• Best Business Premises• Best Floral Display• Best Shop Window• Best New Paintwork• Most Consistent in Appearance• Outstanding Individual WorkThe President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, John Drummey, said: “The various volunteer groups who comprise the Tidy Towns Team in Tralee have worked tirelessly in recent years to bring Tralee to Gold Medal status. The entire business community in the town needs to show more pride in our town and play a bigger role in supporting the volunteers’ efforts with a view to winning the National Tidy Towns Competition. We all need to work on this throughout the entire year rather than waiting until the weather improves or before an imminent visit from the Tidy Towns Judges.”

Joan O’Regan, a member of the Team Bramble Volunteer Group who was a key player in Tralee’s success in the 2014 Entente Florale will lead the Judging panel each month. The Judges will consider all businesses in Tralee for a monthly award and the first winner, for January, will be announced at a business lunch early next month.Tralee jumped to 3rd from 25th in the Irish Business Against Litter League survey last August only to drop the ball and slip back down the pecking order to 17th earlier this month.“Victory in the Tidy Towns Competition would be the ideal way to celebrate Tralee’s 800th Year Anniversary, but it can only happen if everyone – businesses, residents and visitors – makes the effort to have Tralee looking as good as possible all year round,” said John Drummey. For more information about how to become a member of Tralee Chamber Alliance or to join any of the volunteer groups working towards making Tralee Ireland’s tidiest town, visit www.Tralee.ie or contact 066 7121472.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS C: THE MINIMUM WAGEQuestionI heard that the minimum wage has increased to €9.15 an hour. My employer says that this only applies to adults and that, as I am under 18, he won’t be increasing my hourly rate of pay. Is that right?

AnswerNo. Since 1 January 2016, the statutory minimum wage for an experienced adult has increased to €9.15 per hour. Under the National Minimum Wage Act 2000, there are also pro-rata increases for those aged under 18 and for trainees. The new rates are as follows:

If your employer is not paying you the appropriate minimum wage, you can make a complaint to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) using the online complaint form available on workplacerelations.ie. In the complaint form you have two options. You may either request an inspector from the WRC to investigate a claim that the national minimum wage is not being paid or you may refer a dispute to a WRC adjudicator. However, you can only refer a dispute if you have requested a statement from your employer outlining the calculation of the average hourly pay. You can get more information on the minimum wage and your employment rights from the WRC Information and Customer Service (Lo-call 1890 80 80 90 or workplacerelations.ie) or from the Citizens Information Centre below.

IT TRALEE ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO BE AMBITIOUS IN THEIR COLLEGE CHOICES As the CAO deadline for third level college places on the 1st February approaches, there are many factors for students to consider when filling out the CAO form and deciding on the shape of their future careers. IT Tralee has always been a popular choice for students from the greater Munster region and from all over Ireland, for many years now, mainly due to the multiple choices in high quality internationally recognised and accredited qualifications. With a range of 51 CAO courses up to honours degree level to choose from there is something to suit all passions and ambitions, with 82% of graduates of IT Tralee employed in industry or pursuing further studies by October following graduation. “IT Tralee values career prospects and progression. Excellent student to staff ratios mean that students receive that important personal attention from lecturers and course co-ordinators. At IT Tralee you are not just a number, you are part of a concise, tight knit, world-class community that values independent thinking and fosters academic scholarship, along with diversity and a fulfilling student experience. With over 70 nationalities on campus and 100 international partner institutes, courses offered at IT Tralee range from Business and Computing to Agricultural Engineering, Pharmaceutical Science, Nursing and Health and Leisure. Nowadays experience in industry is more valuable than ever and the majority of the 51 courses offered through the CAO include a work placement module that gives students the opportunity to gain essential industry experience and be work-ready, with many securing placements both nationally and internationally’ said President of IT Tralee, Dr. Oliver Murphy. Dr. Murphy went on to outline that while study is a crucial aspect of student life, there are considerable lifestyle perks in choosing IT Tralee when deciding what path to take. Students and surfers can get from campus to the picturesque coast in just 10 minutes, enjoying some of the longest beaches and world famous surf spots on the west coast of Ireland. ‘Meeting and conversing with new people, many from different cultures, and making new friends, is all part of education for life, and IT Tralee has over 70 clubs and societies that students can get involved in. GAA is just one of the many sports played in the Kingdom and the importance of physical activity is a vital aspect to IT Tralee’s spirit. Sport plays a huge role in student life at IT Tralee, with over 30 sport clubs on offer and plans for a dedicated €15m sports academy opening in 2017,’ said President Murphy. Lastly, President Murphy is keen to address the cost implications for families when sending their young adults to college. ‘Parents and students will be glad to hear that the cost of living in Tralee is significantly lower than Dublin (50% less) and Limerick or Cork (25% less). There is a whole host of affordable, high quality student accommodation available here, all within walking distance of IT Tralee North and South campus and the many amenities that Tralee town and its hinterland has to offer. This is surely an important factor when weighing up options’ he said. For more information on the opportunities that studying at IT Tralee has to offer, and for queries from parents or students interested in knowing more, please visit www.ittralee.ie. Applications should be made via the CAO at www.cao.ie before 5.15pm on Monday 1st February 2016.

TORQUING CARS!

HYUNDAI ENTERS ECO-CAR FRAY WITH IONIQHyundai has revealed the name of a new stand-along ecologically-friendly model of family car which it plans to launch later this year. The new model will be called the Ioniq, and it’ll go head-to-head with the Toyota Prius, which is thought to have inspired it.However, unlike the Prius, which is available as either a plug-in or traditional hybrid, the Ioniq will also be available in pure electric form – making it the first car to offer all three alternatives in one model. That means it can also count among its rivals the Nissan Leaf, which is currently the world’s most popular electric car. It’ll be Hyundai’s first mass-market eco-friendly model, although the company also offers the hydrogen-powered ix35 Fuel Cell vehicle for sale, which is being produced in small numbers with a high price tag. Along with the name, Hyundai has also revealed the first design sketch of the new model, showing a smooth, aerodynamic design that’s more conventional than that of its chief rival. It’s promising a “sleek, coupé-like” profile and “numerous eye-catching details”, as well as key range-increasing features such as active aerodynamics.Hyundai will reveal the new model at a special event in Korea in January 2016, with the new model going on display at the Geneva and New York motor shows in March. It’s thought it will be available to order later in the year.

NEW MERCEDES E-CLASS REVEALEDMercedes opens the Detroit motor show with a new version of its E-class executive saloon. It might have conservative looks, but the technology has taken a leap forwardIn a fast changing and jittery world, it can be nice to find something that hasn’t changed much at all. And certainly Mercedes-Benz’s new, 10th-generation E-class saloon looks very similar to its predecessor. But then why mess with a winning formula? The E-class defines Mercedes like the 3-series does BMW. It carries more advanced technology than the flagship S-class, makes more profit than the smaller, cheaper C-class and is an exemplar of the Stuttgart firm’s engineering-led ethos. We got to see the car at a glitzy cocktail party on the eve of the show. A sneak look at the spec sheet reveals that under the surface, the new E-class is packed with new stuff, including a replacement for Mercedes’ frugal-but-clattery 2.1-litre diesel engine. The new E220d uses an all-aluminium, 1,950cc, 195bhp unit capable of emissions of 102g/km. It’s joined by the carry-over 184bhp/132g/km 2.0-litre petrol in the E200, plus a 258bhp/133g/km 3.0-litre diesel and the new E350e plug-in hybrid, which has a combined output of 279bhp and official CO2 emissions of just 49g/km.All the cars at launch will use Mercedes’s excellent nine-speed automatic gearbox and will be rear-wheel drive. Conventional teel suspension is further developed for better ride quality and comes with a variety of ride heights and stiffness, and there’s the option of Mercedes’ new multi-chamber air suspension. Dimensions are slightly tweaked, with the new car 43mm longer than its predecessor. Meanwhile, new LED active headlamps automatically shield other road users from glare, and there are optional “stardust-effect” rear LED lamps.Inside, there’s a complete rework, with new seats and an all-new dashboard design that thankfully brings to an end the German practise of just shoving a tablet-style screen into the middle of the dash. Two screens are joined and provide the driver’s instrument binnacle and the satnav and entertainment screen. There are new touch-sensitive controls and a touch pad, but not touchscreens as Mercedes doesn’t think them safe. The E-class will also park itself remotely when the space is tight and there’s a new mobile-phone supported car-to-car communications system, which warns of hazards ahead. The rest of the kit list is lengthy, but inductive mobile-phone charging, use of a smartphone as a key and LED interior lamps are on there. There’s also newly developed side airbags, which inflate before impact to move passengers away from the side of the car, and an extraordinary system which plays a note through the car’s speakers to stimulate the acoustic reflex in the inner ear to protect the delicate parts of ear from the noise of a crash. Er, like wow! We’ll drive this new E-class in March and you can buy it in late spring.(DAILY TELEGRAPH)

LACK OF A LANDFILL SITE AND INCINERATOR FACILITIES IN MUNSTER PUSHING UP WASTE PRICES IN TRALEE THE huge shortfall in landfill capacity in the country is putting immense pressure on waste collection companies and their customers’ pockets, according to John Higgins of Higgins Waste & Recycling Services Ltd, Tralee. He said there is an onus on the Government to address the situation in the interest of safeguarding jobs and ensuring that local companies can continue to provide a service to local customers. The landfill site in Kerry closed in 2013 which led to the transportation of waste, firstly, to the landfill site in Co Kildare, and more recently to the UK and The Netherlands.A heightened increase on the landfill tax in the UK has resulted in the export market having to deal with a greater percentage of material leading to huge export costs for Higgins which employs 20 people in Tralee.John Higgins, Managing Director of Higgins Waste, said: “As we move towards the introduction of new EU Waste Collection regulations later this year, we wish to advise customers that the minimum of €30 on your account will not change and the weight charges on your bins will not change. However, in order to continue to offer you the most competitive rates by a local company, we will have to increase our Service Charge to €3 per week from the 1st February 2016.For a limited period from February 1st to June 30th, we will also offer a one off payment system of €130 while the Service Charge increase is not applicable to annual customers.”Service charges and the pay-by-weight system were introduced in 2015 and since then, Higgins Waste and Recycling have experienced a positive response from their customers who have adapted to the new manner in which their waste is collected.“To keep your costs down we recommend that customers should use the three bins appropriately and, as is currently the case, people whose waste weighs less will pay less,” said John Higgins. For more information or general queries in relation to how best to manage your waste and recycling costs down, check out our website Higginswaste.com or email your query to [email protected]

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

IT REALLY IS ABOUT HOW YOU LIVE:Tralee showed its caring side this week when huge crowds came out for the funeral of Joe Flynn. It was a measure of the esteem in which Joe was held in the town and beyond. Now at this stage his family will be grieving together after all the public occasions but I want to write a small piece about what we can take from his sad passing.Over the last few months Joe has known his fate but has shown remarkable courage and bravery in his fight. He went public in the local papers and then did one of the most memorable radio interviews on the Ray Darcy Show. He was present and beaming at his daughter’s wedding. However it’s the occasions that his friends put on for him that will long be remembered. On too many occasions we have all stood around the church or funeral home and said wouldn’t it have been great if such a thing had been done or wouldn’t he / she have loved such a thing.Thankfully in Joe’s case all these things were done while he was still with us. There was a unique day at Tralee Dynamos, the likes of which will never be repeated. It was a horrible day weather wise but over 50 players from many decades put on boots – many for the first time in years – and played a game of soccer. They did this to honour Joe and thank him for all he did for the sport over the years. No one cared about the rules, how many side it was or who won. It was all about the taking part.Darts was another great love of Joe’s and many of those he played with and against had a night in his honour. The Leeds United supporters club, still one of the best supported clubs in the county for some reason even if the said supporters club age profile is shall we say getting on a bit, (Apologies to a certain member of the Kerry sports media and a well-known ex soccer referee) had a great night for Joe in the Castle Bar. It turned out to be a memorable night as Leeds defeated Wolves in the game they were watching. All of these things were organised by people who loved Joe and his company and who didn’t want to be standing around outside the funeral home or church and saying wouldn’t he have loved to have gone to Dynamos once more or seen Leeds play surrounded by fellow supporters. All those people involved know who they are and none wants credit for doing what they did. They did it for their love of a good man. They did it so no one can have any regrets. Yes Joe’s passing at too young an age is very sad, and unmentionably sad for his family, but his life is a beacon to all as to how we should live life, how we should battle adversity and how we are much stronger together. And for showing us these things Joe Flynn we are eternally grateful to you.

17’S OPPONENTS KNOWN AS SQUADS COMES TOGETHER:The acceptance of Kerry into the SSE U17 League of Ireland has created a great buzz in the county and over 60 players have attended

trials in the KDL. The format for the League, which kicks off on the week ending March 20th, was unveiled by the FAI this week and it will see Kerry in a 12 team group and therefore playing 11 games at home and 11 away. It will be a tough campaign for the new team as they are in the Group with last year’s winners Shamrock Rovers, one of four trips to the Dublin area – the others to Bray Wanderers, Cabinteely and UCD. There will face two Galway sides, Mervue United and Salthill Devon and will visit Wexford Youths as well. The rest of the games will be all Munster clashes with Cobh Ramblers, Cork City, Limerick FC and Waterford United in the Group. It is expected that the squad will be announced this weekend as all players must be signed by the end of the month.

LONG WAY FROM TRALEE TO TAIPEI:Tralee/Kerry will once again participate at this year’s International Children’s Games and Cultural Festival, which will be held in New Taipei, Taiwan from July 11th to 16th. In total 23 athletes will participate in what is the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Games, a remarkable achievement in itself.Tralee will be represented in boys’ soccer, girls’ basketball and track and field athletics. The host venue, New Taipei, and the participation of over 1500 athletes from around the world, combine to provide an exciting mix of culture, sport, education and social interaction for these young athletes.“We have been participating and successfully competing at these Games in many disciplines for 11 years now and this year’s event in New Taipei, Taiwan is likely to provide our athletes with fantastic colour and excitement, new experiences of Eastern culture and superb sporting competition” according to Tralee ICG secretary, Mike Culloty. “Obviously there is much work involved in organising participation of the athletes and without the co-operation of parents and members of the public-who are ever supportive of our efforts-it would not be possible. It is good to have reached this point now with the teams and selections finalised and players committed to travel, and from this point on we will be full steam ahead into fundraising for the trip and making all the necessary arrangements for travel, registration of athletes, accommodation at the Games, provision of playing gear, and others as required”. Tralee, at the present time, remains the only Irish representatives at what is the world’s largest annual multi-sport youth event, and which is supported by the International Olympic Committee. The efforts of the Tralee ICG voluntary committee is worthy of support and we wish all athletes well in their preparation and participation in the New Taipei Games, 2016. The athletes selected to represent Tralee, Kerry and Ireland at the New Taipei Games are as follows:Soccer: Paddy O Rourke, Ronan O Shea, Booki

Nikic, Alex O Connor, Sebastian Vasiu, Tadhg Mc Evoy, James Rusk, Sean Mc Grath. Athletics Boys: Fergal O Brien, Cillian Griffin O Brien, Basit Oyebonji, Sean Quilter, Harry Emerson, Darragh Courtney and in the Girls Ciara Mc Carthy.Basketball: Rachel Ryan, Maeve Mc Elligott, Ciara Ryan, Anna Lyons, Millie Luck, Katelyn Crowe, Michelle (Shelley) Clifford.

The monies raised are going to their local Hospital and the Oncology Department OF Tralee General Hospital. Trials can be booked by calling the Racing Office on 061 448057.
