WILDFLOWERS (continued):•Skunkcabbageisaswamp-lovingplantthat

is well named. It blooms in February and Marchinswampyareasandproducesanodd-looking flower before producing any leaves. The flowers resemble pins in a pincushion. When the plant is bruised, it smells awful.

•NativeAmericansusedtheorangesapofthebloodroot plant to color or paint their faces for warfare or ceremonies and to dye baskets. The flowers on a bloodroot plant are so delicate that it cannot be picked successfully. The petals fall off with the slightest touch or breeze. The sap comes from the stem.

•Mistletoeisaplantwetraditionallyassociatewith Christmas. Unlike most wildflowers that are rooted in soil, this plant is termed a “semi-parasite” because it draws water andminerals from a host plant. It typically grows on hardwood trees in the southern United States producing small white berries coated with a sticky substance that is toxic to humans.

• Dodder or Love Vine is unusual becauseit is a true parasite. Unlike semi-parasiticmistletoe, which produces green leaves, dodder vines are gold in color. Shortly after dodder seeds sprout, root-like structuresattach themselves to a host plant, and the dodder plant draws all of its nourishment from the host plant. Common Dutch clover is a host plant for several dodder species.

• The Southern or evergreen magnolia isemblematic of the Southern states in America. The flower is the State Flower for Louisiana and Mississippi. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) With change dominant this week, don’t be surprised to find new facts emerging that could put another slant on a situation and offer you another choice. Think it through before you decide.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) There could be some lingering problems from a previous matter that involved a decision you felt you had to make. Resolve the situation with your strong Taurean no-nonsense approach. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The Gemini’s carefully made plans could be undone by someone’s unexpected decision. Getting the full story behind that surprise move can help you decide how to deal with the matter CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Recently un-covered information might put a new light on a situation you thought had been resolved. Keep an open mind about possible changes that you might have to consider.LEO (July 23 to August 22) With a potential revision of an old agreement, you can’t beat the Big Cat for knowing how to sharpen a “clause” to the best advantage. Someone close could have the news you’ve been waiting for.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Certain issues in the workplace could put you in the middle of a dispute you’d rather not deal with. Express your honest feelings before the pres-sure to take sides builds up.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might feel uneasy disagreeing with someone you’ve been close to. But your relationship should be able to withstand and even thrive when confronted with your true feelings.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A romantic situation seems to be creating more confusion than you can handle. If so, own up to your feelings. The sooner you do, the better your chances are for working things out.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) With change directing the Archer’s aim, consider a second look at your plans and see where they might benefit from a revision. A workplace matter is close to a resolution.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) New contacts help you learn some important information about upcoming developments. The week calls for the Sea Goat to be more flexible than usual in a number of matters.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With both change and uncertainty in your aspect, you might feel less confident in a previous de-cision. That’s OK. Check it out and see where it could be modified, if necessary.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Old relationships that seemed to be sinking are buoyant again, and new relationships are ben-efiting from Cupid’s loving care. This could be a good time to make a major move.BORN THIS WEEK: While you prefer to tread your own path, you’ll go out of your way to help someone in need.

Q: I am tempted to purchase something I saw on television, but thought I would get your advice first. A company based in Chester, N.Y., has issued commemorative coins bearing im-ages of the World Trade Center and the U.S.S. New York. They are made with silver retrieved from ground zero after 9/11. The coins are $29.95 each, a price I think will certainly increase in the future. -- Charley, Davenport, IowaA: I would not purchase medals or coins from this company. For starters, the National Collec-tor’s Mint is not affiliated with the United States Mint, and the coins they issue are not legal tender but rather what I call “instant collect-ibles.” Instant collectibles rarely, if ever, increase in value. If you have doubts, talk to people who purchased “limited issue” plates throughout the 1980s and ‘90s and are now trying to sell them. The National Collector’s Mint was cited as recently as 2004 by New York’s attorney general for false advertising and forced to pay $2 mil-lion in fines and penalties. The company claims

in its television ads that a portion of the profits from the sale of the coins will be used to benefit the Secret Service Uniformed Division Benefits Fund, which on closer examination is a private group that runs a gift shop in Washington, D.C., not an official U.S. agency. Before you decide whether to buy, check out the official Web site of the United States Mint, which has posted a warn-ing about the National Collector’s Mint.***Q: I have a Coca-Cola calendar from 1899. It depicts a woman sitting at a writing table. The text includes the phrases “Delicious and Refresh-ing,” “Cures Headaches” and “Relives Mental and Physical Exhaustion.” Could you please give me an idea of its value? -- Jean, Salem, Mo.A: Your calendar should be printed on cardboard stock and measure about 7 3/8 by 13 inches. Coca-Cola calendars printed before 1940 are rare and collectible. I found your 1899 calendar in Warman’s Coca-Cola Collectibles: Identifica-tion and Price Guide by Allen Petretti (Krause, $24.99). Condition is, of course, extremely im-portant. In good to excellent condition, Petretti values the 1899 Coca-Cola advertising calendar at about $15,000. This is assuming the one you have is an original issue and not a reproduction.

WILDFLOWERS (continued):•Wildflower festivals are popular in

many different areas. The 25th Annual Mountain Flower Fine Art & Wine Festival in Dahlonega, Georgia, is held the third weekend in May. The Dahlonega Master Gardeners present wildflower displays, walks and tours.

• The Mount Pisgah Arboretum inOregon also has a Wildflower Festival in May. Always the Sunday after Mother’s Day, this year’s event will be May 15, 2011. Guided hikes are available, and 300 to 400 species of wildflowers are displayed.

•TheWatertonWildflowerFestivalisanine-day event in June at WatertonLakes National Park in Alberta, Canada, across the border from Glacier National Park. Waterton is an International Peace Park and World Heritage Site. Due to the conjunction of prairie and mountain ecosystems, the park has a truly unique variety of wildflowers. It is home to more than 50 of Canada’s rarest flowers including 30 species that aren’t found anywhere else in the world. In fact, Waterton has more flowers than any other mountain park. The festival has educational courses, art exhibits, workshops, hikes and even horseback rides.

• Crested Butte, the official wildflowercapital of Colorado, began hosting a wildflower festival in 1986. Now the week-long celebration has over 200classes, including art and cooking classes with wildflowers. The 2011 eventissetforJuly11-17.

•TheWildflower!Arts&MusicFestivalis amulti-day arts andmusic festivalcelebrating its 19th anniversary this year. Held north of Dallas in Richardson, Texas, it got its name from the wildflowers planted throughout the parks, medians and roadsides of Richardson.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I got a dog, “Jess,” for my kids after they begged me for months. It was on the condition that they take care of her, take her for walks, train her, etc. But I am always the one taking her for walks, trying to train her, making sure she gets fed. How can I make these kids be responsible for their pet? -- Tammy G., Tallahassee, Fla.

DEAR TAMMY: It sounds like you’re going to have to train the kids alongside the dog. I’m sure you’ve reminded them that they promised to be responsible for Jess, with no results. I’m no parenting expert, but it’s probably time to be a little sterner with them. What’s your normal disciplinary style for the kids when they break the rules? Do you send them to their rooms? Ground them? Or take away something they value for a period of time, like access to the video-game console? Implement the same discipline for failure to take care of Jess.

Do you maintain a chore chart for the kids? Add dog walks, training, feeding and other tasks to the chart, with the same reward/punishment system as for the other chores. To help your kids get into the habit of caring for Jess regularly, join them for the first week or two as they complete their assigned task -- not lecturing, just helping. Go with them on walks with Jess, but make sure they hold the leash. Guide them when they’re teaching Jess basic commands, but have them do the training. Get them into the habit of taking care of their dog.***DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The Canton Paw Park in Canton, Ga., featured in a column last year on dog parks, is preparing for its grand opening on April 16. We want to thank Boy Scout Troop No. 4900, which handmade 10 bag holder stations. The project helped the scouts earn their carpentry badges. -- Alesa

DEAR ALESA: Great job, Scouts! Readers, you can learn more about Troop 4900’s project and the Canton Paw Park at www.pawscorner.com.

¥ Check your local newspaper or city/county government for programs that provide free or near-free water barrels. Many areas have a pro-gram, and they really do help keep your water costs down if you have flowers or vegetable gardens.

¥ To keep the edges of lettuce from browning, tear it or use a plastic knife sold just for this purpose. Metal will make the edges brown.

¥ “If you want same-size cookies, roll and freeze your dough for 10-15 minutes. Most doughs will harden enough to slice into perfectly uni-form slices, and the freezing doesn’t really affect cooking time too much. (Watch your first batch, though.)” -- R.L. in Missouri

¥ If you are reattaching a button to shorts or pants, try using dental floss, the unwaxed kind. It’s much stronger, and can hold the button bet-ter than regular thread. Use a marker to darken it if the color is an issue.

¥ “Shaving cream can be used as a spot remover for many carpets. Use only a small amount, and follow up with a damp cloth.” -- D.L. in New Brunswick, Canada

¥ “To prevent a skin from forming on the top of a can of leftover paint, you can inflate a balloon and stick it in the can, cut a piece of wax paper to fit or store the can inverted, so that the skin will form on the bottom and stay there when you flip it.” -- W.B. in Alabama

Whenever we keep hearing conflicting opinions, it’s probably something we should pay attention to. In this case it’s cell phones and the radiation they emit: Do they cause brain cancer -- or not?Consumer Reports, always a solid, no-nonsense publication, summed up a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association on the effects of cell phones on humans. Here’s what scientists learned:Yes, there is a short-term effect from radiation in the phones. In the study, participants had one cell phone pressed to each ear for 50 minutes. One played sound and one was muted. Researchers did PET scans, one with phones turned on and one with the phones off. The result was much more ac-tivity in the brain near the antenna on the phones

How Safe Are Cell Phones?

that were turned on.And here’s what researchers concluded: They’re not sure. Granted, there’s more brain activity, but they still don’t know if it has health risks. And the Federal Communications Commission says there are no health risks, in spite of all the concern.Cell phones are handy to have, especially for seniors. We can call for directions to wherever we’re going (af-ter we’ve pulled over to the side of the road, of course). We can let people know we’ll be late so they don’t worry. We can carry them in our pocket when we’re out gardening, just in case we fall or need help.Still, until the question of cell phone safety is finally sorted out, here are two suggestions: Don’t use a cell phone as your main house phone, and when you do use a cell phone, use the little earplugs so the phone isn’t next to your head.

WILDFLOWERS (continued):• Do you knowwhichUnited States’ FirstLady is considered the “EnvironmentalFirst Lady”? Claudia AltaTaylor Johnson, otherwise known as Lady Bird, was the wife of the 36th President, Lyndon Johnson.(The nickname was supposedly given to her by a nursemaid when she was a child whosaidshewas“aspurtyasaladybird.”)

• While she was First Lady, Mrs. Johnsoncreated the First Lady’s Committee for a More Beautiful Capital. She wanted to create natural landscaping to preserve the beauty of the nation’s capital. Later she expanded the program to include the entire nation.

•In1982,LadyBirdJohnsonandactressHelenHayes founded the Lady Bird JohnsonWildflower Center, originally called the NationalWildflower Research Center, “tointroduce people to the beauty and diversity of wildflowers and other native plants.”

• The center in Austin, Texas, has publicgardens, woodlands and meadows and is an internationally influential research center. In 2006, the center became an Organized Research Unitof the University of Texas at Austin.

• Wildflower research has far-reachingimplications. One wildflower that has made a huge difference in many lives worldwide is Wild Foxglove, botanically known as Digitalis purpurea. The medicine derived from this plant is widely used today to treat heart disease. As Lady Bird has said, “Surely there areothers like digitalis waiting out there.”

• So, whether you’re canoeing down astream, hiking in the woods, or observing the median on a road trip, notice the wildflowers.Realizetheirvaluetosocietycomes from more than their natural beauty.

OVERCOMINGTHEODDS:SUSAN BOYLE

In April 2009, life changed for Susan Boyle, a single ordinary woman from Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland. She may have looked ordinary, but she definitely didn’t sound that way.

• BoylewasbornApril1,1961,theyoungestof nine children. Her mother was 47 at the time of her birth, and Boyle was deprived of oxygen briefly during the difficult birth. She has some difficulties learning and because of this was bullied as a child.

• Singing in her local Catholic Churchbrought Boyle great joy and also helped her to express herself. Her lovely voice was known by those in her hometown who had heard her. She also sang karaoke locally and dreamed of singing professionally. Fred O’Neil, her voice coach, encouraged her to audition for “Britain’s Got Talent.”

• When Boyle came onto the stage forthe popular reality show, the reaction from the judges and the crowd was kind of ho hum — Here we go again with another bad audition! Although her looks were plain, her banter with the judges revealed her jovial, funny personality. Then she had the opportunity to wow the audience, the judges and the world, which she certainly did.

• Boyle’s words while on stage, beforesinging, on January 21, 2009 (it airedon television on April 11), “I’m tryingto be a professional singer. I’ve never been given the chance before but here’s hoping it’ll change.” Well, changehappened, and it happened quickly.

• Boyle sang “I Dream a Dream” from“Les Miserables” on stage that night, and her fame started spreading around the world like wildfire.

PARK IT HERE!For years, cities have had to come up

with solutions for parking cars to allow access for employees and people doing business as well as for visitors and tourists.

•Whethercalledacarpark, parkinggarage, parking structure, parking ramp, parking deck, parkade or some other name, buildings equipped to hold lots of cars have become a necessity for crowded cities. Unique parking structures are found in cities around the world. Architects have not only worked to solve parking problems but have designed some memorable structures.

In every relationship there is a certain element of give and take. Even when you give, just to give - expecting nothing in return, you will inevitably still receive. We love to support and build relationships with businesses who give back to the community. It becomes a win-win situation for everyone. One business we would like to give special attention to at this time is Chick-fil-A of Longmont. Chick-fil-A of Longmont supports our local community by hosting Spirit Nights, a fundraising opportunity for local schools. Spirit Nights create a wonderful environment for children and parents to socialize with family and friends over a great meal, all while earning money for education. Aren’t able to make a Spirit Night? Check the event calendar at http://www.cfarestaurant.com/longmont/home for other scheduled events such as Heroes Night, which supports local men and women who have given service through military, firefighting, law enforcement, etc. Show your support and give Chick-fil-A of Longmont the gift of your business. Even if you visit on a regular ‘ol non-event night, you will still receive an enjoyable meal and excellent customer service that goes above and beyond. It is always their pleasure to welcome us to their dining room.

¥ It was Kurt Vonnegut, one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, who made the following sage observation: “There is no reason why good can-not triumph as often as evil. The triumph of anything is a matter of organization. If there are such things as angels, I hope they are organized along the lines of the Mafia.” ¥ That cork you pulled out of your wine bottle was made from the bark of a tree. The cork oak has to grow for 25 years before any cork is harvested, and then it’s stripped only every 10 years thereafter. ¥ If you can predict the future by watching the flight patterns of birds, you are engaging in ornithomancy. ¥ The coldest place on earth is a place known only as Ridge A in Antarctica. The average winter temperature there is -94 degrees F.

¥ According to archaeological research, the bikini is nothing new; evidence has been found that the two-piece garment was worn in parts of Italy as early as 2000 B.C.

¥ In 1950, 70 percent of all the cars, buses and trucks in the world could be found in the United States.

¥ According to the Consumer Electronics As-sociation, the average television screen in United States homes is growing by 1 inch every year. ¥ It was Ambrose Bierce, in his “Devil’s Diction-ary,” who defined “admiration” as “our polite rec-ognition of another’s resemblance to ourselves.” ¥ Ever wonder why magazine publisher Hugh Hefner chose a rabbit as the symbol of his Play-boy magazine? Evidently, when the mogul was a small boy, one of his treasured possessions was a blanket with bunnies all over it.***Thought for the Day: “I’ve done the calculation, and your chances of winning the lottery are iden-tical whether you play or not.” -- Fran Lebowitz

PARK IT HERE! (continued):• A parking area combined with shopping,

restaurants, etc. in Tokyo Bay is quite a tourist destination. Even though it is expensive to access by toll, the Umihotaru, “floating carpark,” is a must see. Its design resemblesa cruise ship, and it is built on an artificial island where Japan’s longest tunnel, theAqualine, ends and becomes a bridge.

• Another parking structure connected towater is Marina City on the Chicago River in Chicago that was built to discourage city residents from moving to the suburbs. Two 65-story towers that were part of thecomplex and completed in 1964 contain 18 floors for parking. Each tower of the “corncob”structureaccommodates450autos.

•Turningfromwatertobooks, the“CommunityBookshelf” parking garage for the CentralLibrary in Kansas City, Missouri, looks like a row of books on a library shelf. The south wall of the garage is designed with signboard mylar book spines measuring 25 feet by 9 feet (7.6 m x 2.7 m). The books showcased are 22 titles that were suggested by readers.

• Cologne, Germany, has Europe’s longestparking structure. Rheinauhafen is a parking tunnel that is 2.5 miles (4 km) long with three strategically placed entrances.

•TheMichiganTheater inDetroit,Michigan, isanother unusual parking garage. Originally a grand theater built in 1926 on the site where Henry Ford built his first automobile, it was scheduled for demolition in 1976. Engineers saved the historic building by redesigning it into a three-story garage.
