ENJOY CANOWINDRA’S BOUNTY Canowindra is planning a massive weekend starting the evening of Friday 11 October with a Bushrangers Dance at the Community Hall. Tickets are only $15 per person and are available from the Canowindra Newsagency. Live entertainment will be provided and you are encouraged to dress in period costume and bring your own supper. On Saturday 12 October the City of Orange Brass Band will be performing at All Saints' Anglican Church Canowindra from 11:30am to 12:30pm. After lunch (all local cafes, restaurants and pubs will be open...or bring a picnic for the park or Age of Fishes Museum garden) the Street Parade will begin at 2.30pm, where it is rumoured Ben Hall and the bushranger gang will ride into town to party. Afterwards, crowds will be encouraged to take a stroll down the street to the Memorial Park on the corner of Gaskill and Blatchford Streets to enjoy the Canowindra @ Home Night Market which kicks off at 4pm. This popular Spring feast showcases local wineries and producers. With something for everyone, the market stalls will be stocked with locally grown produce ranging from olives and figs, succulent spring lamb, hearty beef dishes and native flowers. Sydney entertainment ‘The Handsome Young Strangers’ will be playing at the Night Market, and festivities will continue at the Royal Hotel, with the band playing from 8pm. Make a weekend of it and join in the fun!

GASKILL STREET’S CORNER & BUSHRANGERS It is great to see buildings at the bend in Gaskill Street being renovated in time for the Bushrangers’ Jubilee celebrating 150 years since the Ben Hall gang’s famous raids of Canowindra. It is hoped that many enthusiasts who attended Bathurst’s Bushranger Raid celebrations last weekend will come to Canowindra’s the weekend after next. In 1863 Canowindra was only a small wayside village with a cluster of mostly wooden buildings near today’s bend in the street. Some, including a butcher’s and a black-smith’s, led to the first ford of the river at the site of today’s Swinging Bridge. Others were along the track above the flood plain that is now the middle section of Gaskill Street. One exception was a substantial shop built about 1860 by James Collits. It was the first brick building in Canowindra and Pierce’s store in 1863. The former Rural Bank now occupies its site. The Canowindra Inn and Pierce’s Store were the focus of Canowindra’s bushranger raids. Collits also owned the Canowindra Inn opposite the store, licensed to William Robinson in 1863 and known mostly as Robinson’s Inn. This was when public houses were required by law to display prominently the name of the licensee and so were usually known by the licensee’s name. They also had to have a light burning all night outside as a beacon for travellers.

Canowindra’s bushranger story has often been confused about sites and actual buildings of the raids. The Royal Hotel, built in 1910 to replace the old north side hotel, rightly claims to be the site of bushranger raids but cannot claim to be the actual building, which occupied the site of today’s Canowindra Pharmacy and some of the adjoining building, all on Collits’ land. The hotel raided was the Canowindra Inn until 1887 when, with change of publican and renovations, it became the Miners Arms, to reflect another period of Canowindra’s history. South of the river, where the town was originally planned, was another inn, The Travellers’ Rest, built of mud, dating back to 1846. It was owned and licensed to Robinson at various periods before and after 1863 but in that crucial year was Daly’s pub, licensed to Nicholas Daly who was also the postmaster. A monument to mark this hotel was erected by Boree Shire in 1951 but wrongly claims it was the hotel raided by bushrangers. On the night of the second raid, however, Ben Hall and John Vane rode on one horse across the rising river to the south side pub on the first evening, no doubt to check if there was anyone there who might report them to the police in Cowra. Thanks are due to Bill Barwood, who lives near the monument, for recently prevailing on Cabonne Council to restore the monument’s lettering and cleaning the Historical Society’s correcting brass plaque. WHAT AN ACHIEVEMENT! Contd Since then Nick and Rob have worked tireless to build on the popularity created by Michele and Dot. Today The Canowindra Trading Post team, which has comprised nine happy and helpful long term employees over this time, ensure all who walk through the doors are provided with an exemplary shopping experience. Nick Jacobs is modest at this milestone, “I want to thank all our customers for their out-standing support over the years, without whom we would have nothing. “We are grateful and humbled to have been part of an independent retail business that has prospered for 20 years in a small but diverse regional community. Rob wholeheartedly agrees, “We have always been proud to be embraced by such a wonderful, supportive community! Celebrating this twentieth birthday is a wonderful achievement! Thank you, THANK YOU!” Pop up Clearance Shops, special shopping evenings to help fundraise for community groups, and the annual cave of Christmas delights, have seen The Canowindra Trading Post become a tourist destination in the Central West. Testament to this dedication is apparent in the business being named finalist in four categories of the 2013 Daroo Business Awards, the winner of which will be announced at the Canowindra Services Club Friday 1 November 2013.
