As an orthopedically disabled person, I had lost all hope of ever getting a chance to work and be independent. My family of five survives on the single income of my father.

I enrolled for a vocational training program in the BPO sector at the IL&FS Skills School (ISC) at Sidhi in Madhya Pradesh. Today, I am working with Aegis BPO, earning Rs. 6,500 a month of which I send Rs. 1,000 back to my parents.

Meena Saket, trained at IL&FS Skills School in Madhya Pradesh

Dear Reader,

Dilip Chenoy

*till 31th May, 2013

I thought I would share this with you to demonstrate the impact that one of the NSDC approved training partners is having on the ground. For the year 2012-13 there are 4,02,506 such instances that could be shared. We are pleased to inform you that against a target of 4,00,000 set by the Prime ministers Council for Skill Development,

NSDC partners skilled 4,02,506 persons. This is a significant achievement for the organization, as it has achieved its annual target for second year in succession. It has encouraged the organization to embark on a journey to train 1 million youth in the year 2013-14, with greater vigour.

Till May 2013, NSDC partners have cumulatively skilled 657,670 people and placed 401,982 in either well-paying jobs or helped them to become gainfully self-employed. With the commitment of existing partners and the proposals in pipeline, NSDC is well placed to scale these numbers in the coming months.

Adding to the 100th proposal approved in March 2013, NSDC Board approved 3 new proposals at the May Board Meeting. The total count currently stands at 101 proposals, which comprises of 82 training proposals and 19 Sector Skill Councils (SSC). The total 10 year training commitments of these proposals has crossed 70 million, with a peak annual training capacity of 15 million people, in both formal and informal segment. While this is good news, we could have done better. We are taking steps to accelerate the process going forward. We will work with Partners to achieve their milestones as projected and have put in place timeline to compress the gap in approval to launch of training for the new partners.

Much of the NSDC's achievement in the last two years could be credited to its Board, comprising of people from both public and private sector. The Board has played a catalytic role in establishing industry connect and driving key policy issues, driving the skilling ecosystem at large. Mr M V Subbiah Chairman, NSDC, stepped down after leading NSDC for five years. His contribution in transforming NSDC from an idea to a performance driven organisation is invaluable. Many of you would fondly recall his visits to your orgnisations and meetings with you. During Mr Subbiah's tenure, the NSDC board approved over 100 proposals.

Mr. S Ramadorai, Advisor to the Prime Minister of India on Skill Development, took over as the Chairman of NSDC effective from 6th May 2013. Mr Ramadorai is also the Vice Chairman of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Awarded with the prestigious Padma Bhushan Awards

for his contribution to Trade & Commerce in 2006, Mr. Ramadorai has played an integral role in transforming TCS from a $400 million in 1996 to a $6 billion in 2009. His thirteen year tenure as a CEO of TCS ended on October

2009. He was also awarded with Business India's 'Businessman of the Year Award' in 2004. In the past Mr. Ramadorai has been on the Boards of several companies i.e. Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), TATA Technologies Limited, Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Nicholas Piramal India Ltd, TATA Ltd (India), TATA Infotech Ltd (India) etc. His experience in private sector and his role at the National Council on Skill Development will play a vital role in NSDC's scale-up activities. Mr. Jitendra Thakkar, Chairman Thakkar Developers, has also been inducted on the Board of NSDC, as a nominee Director from CREDAI, in place of Mr. C. Shekar Reddy.

The NSDC leadership team was also strengthened with the joining of Mr Atul Bhatnagar as the Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining NSDC, Atul has worked with Barclays in Kenya as Director and Chief Operating Officer. During his tenure, he won several awards i.e. Global Male Diversity Champion, best performing COO for Barclays in Africa region etc. He brings with him a rich experience of more than 24 years, in the banking sector, which will help NSDC in streamlining its existing systems and processes further.

Moving on to the operational issue, you will be happy to learn that NSDC signed an agreement with Premier Centre for Competency & Training on May 29, which is the first training proposal in the Aerospace Industry. NSDC also signed an agreement with Skill Source on May 22nd, which plan to train around 400,000 people over 10 years in the Automobile Sector. At NSDC, we believe these proposals will bring diversity and open up new opportunity for the youth in our country.

On the WorldSkills front, 24 candidates in 22 skills who were selected at the National Competition in the March 2013 have been undergoing training. These candidates

will compete at the WorldSkills Leipzig, starting in the first week of July 2013. While all the logistic preparations for the event are underway, NSDC organized a 3 day workshop in Delhi for all the participants. The workshop aimed at imparting various soft skills i.e. team building, attention to details, networking, time management etc. The entire delegation will depart for Germany in the last week of June, 2013.

As was mentioned in the last edition of Skill Matters, the Udaan initiative has received an overwhelming response from both students in Jammu & Kashmir and the corporates. The number of students registered with Udaan has crossed 22,000. In May, 12 corporates visited

J&K to select over 1000 students. The dedicated section of Udaan in this newsletter has more information on the same.

The Sector Skill Councils are also engaging with their counter parts in different parts of the World for NOS development, LMIS etc. A team of technical consultants from the European Union have been working with individual SSCs for providing inputs on developing LMIS. The SSCs also met Mr. Shikhar Agrawal, who has taken over as Director General, DGET - Ministry of Labour & Employment, to identify synergies and discuss possible areas of collaboration.

To conclude, I would like to inform you that the much awaited Marketing Campaign is scheduled to launch in August 2013. The NSDC team is in discussion with the Market Research Agency and O&M to stream line the campaign. We will update you on the status in the next edition of Skill Matters.

We look forward to your continued support.
