#OWNTHESOUTH

The wait is now over… SFNL Finals are here for all competitions! The SFNL SAS Security Finals Series kicked off last weekend for Division 3 at some new hosting venues for the very first time.

On behalf of the SFNL, I just wanted to publicly share the league’s congratulations and thanks on an excellent finals hosting job at such late notice by Doveton Eagles and Hallam, due to moving the Division 3 finals from Heatherton Recreation Reserve last weekend.

The observations and reports from many people at each venue has been extremely positive. Both venues presented so well and we congratulate Hallam and Doveton Eagles for putting in a massive effort to host successful events.

Well done to Shane McGrath and the entire Doveton Eagles community, as well Matt Brew and the Hallam community. They should all be so proud and we look forward to assessing their finals applications in 2017.

The SFNL advises that Heatherton Recreation Reserve is still unsuitable for Division 3 Finals this weekend. The playing surface has improved in the last week and the decision has been made to relocate games for another weekend to allow the surface additional time to best prepare for the upcoming Preliminary and Grand Finals.

As a result, the Division 3 Second Semi Finals (Saturday) will be played at Meade Reserve, Haughton Road Clayton and the Division 3 First Semi Finals (Sunday) will be played at Keysborough Reserve, Stanley Road Keysborough.

This weekend Division 1, Division 2, Thirds and Under 19s finals commence and we look to have another very exciting few weeks of football to watch. The late rush by certain teams to make the finals across multiple competitions made for an extremely exciting Round 18.

Netball Grand Finals lived up to the expectation! An enormous crowd came out in full support last Sunday for the SFNL Netball Grand Finals.

For the first time in league history, we moved Netball Grand Final day to a Sunday which allowed the majority of the football community to attend, had nine grand finals across three timeslots, implemented a gated entry charge and had SFNL / Southern FM radio broadcasting from 10:30am until just after 4pm. All of these initiatives greatly added to the profile of SFNL netball and further demonstrated the point that it is a premium sporting product in the region.

A special mention must go out to the hard working radio volunteers, in particular those that were pretty much on air the whole day in debutants Hugh Maclean, Mel Aitken, and Sophie O’Shea, in addition to Ian Dougherty and very well supported by Executive Producer Rob Sharpe and Panel Operator Karl Bianco. For those that haven’t listened, I encourage you to go to sfnl.com.au and listen to the podcast, as the netball match broadcasts were insightful, organised, professional and had exceptional content access of coach / player profiles and interviews all day.

The atmosphere across the day was electric and the crowd behaviour and support was fantastic. It was great that the supporters donned their club colours and carried supportive material and signs to cheer on their teams.

Good luck to all football teams this weekend and we hope you enjoy your finals experience.

#OWNTHESOUTHSOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

DIVISION 1: FRONT & CENTRE / WILL HUNTERMordialloc will be September spectators for the first time since 2012 after a stunning last quarter from a determined Bentleigh outfit saw them claim a 15.11 (101) to 11.16 (82) victory at a wind-swept Bentleigh Reserve.

The Bloods’ loss consigns them to a sixth-place finish in 2016, and ends their streak of three successive Grand Final appearances.

Despite entering the game with three losses from their last four starts, Mordi jumped out of the blocks, booting six goals with the aid of the wind to charge to a 19-point buffer at the break.

The Demons, however, fought back to get their noses in front by two points at the long break.

But the Bloods lifted again in the third, and although they led by 19 points at the final change, the margin should perhaps have been closer to five goals had it not been for a few missed shots at the sticks. Nevertheless, the Mordi faithful clung to the hope that they had done enough to hold on in the last quarter.

But it wasn’t to be, as Bentleigh went on a final term rampage, piling on six unanswered goals with the breeze to steamroll the Bloods.

The opposing ruckmen, Demon Andrew Walsh and Bloodhound Rowan Andrews, fought out a titanic duel all day, with the former’s three goals ultimately influential in the result.

Matty Troutbeck stood up in Paddy Nicholls’ absence, booting four goals, while Brody Lawford and Scotty Lawry were also superb for the winners.

Todd Bastion and Beau Turner were Mordi’s best.

Meanwhile, Oakleigh District have claimed Mordi’s spot in the top three after a ruthless 22.16 (148) to 7.3 (45) thrashing of St Pauls at Princes Highway Reserve.

After an opening term stalemate, the Districts clicked into gear in the second quarter, piling on nine goals to one to blow the game open by half time.

Although the Dogs fought back in the third term through the efforts of James Sziller and Callum Cathcart, it was to no avail as Oakleigh finished the match with nine unanswered goals to send the margin beyond triple digits.

Pleasingly for the Oaks, all of their big guns fired, with Paul Fermanis booting four goals in a best afield performance and Jake Mullen and Dave Velardo each finishing with a bag of five.

East Malvern jumped back into the top five with a 12.9 (81) to 9.8 (62) victory over St Kilda City at the Peanut Farm.

But while they were far from impressive against one of the competition cellar dwellars, the Panthers’ line up was bolstered by the return of a host of stars, including Tremaine Tohiariki, Ed Sim, Nathan Robinson and Lachie Dowling.

Tohiariki, Sim and Jimmy Dowling were among the best for the winners, who booted five goals in the opening term before holding the Saints at bay for the remainder of the match.

Aaron Purvis and Keegan Powell were again among the home side.

Clayton have secured fourth place on the ladder after a convincing triumph over Cheltenham at Meade Reserve, 14.16 (100) to 7.9 (51).

In doing so the Clays will be finals participants for the first time since their 2010 Division 2 premiership.

The Rosellas were competitive early, but the home side weren’t troubled from quarter time onwards, sealing their eight win in nine games with a six-goal third term.

Gabby Irons and Trent Papworth were among the influential contributors, while coach Nick Scanlon also looked a class above in attack with six majors.

For the Rosellas it was James North and Chris Neophitou keeping them in it.

The final game went as expected with minor premiers Dingley demolishing the winless East Brighton 22.18 (150) to 4.4 (28) at Souter Oval.

It was a much improved effort from the young Vampires, who were well led by experienced campaigners in Barry Hope and skipper Andrew Jansen, but ultimately the Dingoes had far too much class on every line.

Calhan McQueen was the star of the show, booting 10 goals in a stunning best on ground performance that saw him claim the Division 1 goal kicking title.

Josh Ferguson and Trav La Rocca were also influential for the winners.

Qualifying Final – Saturday 3rd September

Bentleigh V Oakleigh District (Springvale Reserve) The Districts have surged into third spot on the back of a stunning six-game winning streak, setting up an epic Qualifying Final clash with the second-placed Demons.

Bentleigh have also won their last four matches, with their last defeat coming at the hands of Oakleigh by the slimmest of margins in Round 14.

Both teams have been in electric form in the second half of the year and are capable of kicking big scores, which could make this a highly entertaining final.

Crucially for Oakleigh, they have had their big guns firing in recent weeks with Jake Mullen, Dave Velardo, Paul Fermanis, Aaron Henneman and Khaled Kandakji all getting among the goals. Speedster Kandakji will also relish the extra room to gallop on Springvale Reserve.

The burning question for Bentleigh would be how they adjust to life without spearhead Nicholls, who will miss the finals series through work commitments. But with Matt Troutbeck and Andrew Walsh combining for seven majors last week in his absence, they may have found their answer.

Sam McGarry has also proved dangerous around the sticks, slotting 22 for the year, while the evergreen veteran Scott Lawry still providing plenty of drive out of the back half.

Head to head honours are split one win each so far in 2016, and with neither contest decided by more than four points, expect this one to go down to the wire.

But Bentleigh have proved the better side for most of the year and should sneak home in what could be one of the all-time great SFNL finals.

Elimination Final – Sunday 4th September

Clayton V East Malvern (Springvale Reserve) Clayton’s phenomenal resurgence has been one of the biggest stories of 2016.

After a controversial loss to Cheltenham in Round 9, the Clays languished in seventh place with an unenviable 3-6 record. Their season was perilously close to heading down the S-bend.

Since that fateful afternoon, they have won eight of their last nine matches and emerged as one of the most dangerous and exciting teams in the competition.

East Malvern, however, who were second at the halfway mark of the season, have limped into the finals with just two victories from their last eight starts. Injuries have been a massive factor in their downfall, but coach Ben Lockwood would be buoyed by the return of several of his big-name stars on the eve of the finals.

In particular, the Panthers’ talented midfield group of Nathan Robinson, Ed Sim, Jimmy Dowling and Tremaine Tohiariki are hard-bodied ball winners, which are exactly the types of players you need in a cut-throat final.

The Clays have several talented players on every line, including halfback Andy Ray and onballer Chris Morrison, but coach Nick Scanlon looms as the biggest danger for the Panthers. One of the most dynamic players in the competition, Scanlon is capable of kicking big bags and turning a game in minutes.

Clayton ruckman Aaron Mills will also likely have an influence on the contest, with his opposing number in Matt Terech missing this week through suspension.

This will likely be a hard-fought contest, but on form it’s hard to go past the Clays.

DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTES

CLAYTONClayton’s Ones beat Cheltenham to finish off the season with an 8-1 win-loss ratio from the last nine rounds – enough to lock us into fourth spot and a crack at the finals. Our Twos were awesome, playing for nothing but pride against second-placed Cheltenham, but we took it right up to them. Our Thirds had a crack but went down to Sandown by 27 points.

Clayton Hotel Seniors report Our inspirational playing coach Nick Scanlon led his side into the finals - dominating with a personal six-goal haul against Cheltenham. The Clays sucked up the early pressure from a dogged opponent, before outscoring them in the second quarter against a strong breeze. With our tails up at halftime, and a finals berth on the line, the Claymen kicked away with a six-goal

to two-goal third term. The game was won and lost in the midfield. Cheltenham’s strength is its link-up handball through the middle, but great four-quarter efforts from Gabby Irons, Trent Papworth, Chris Morrison and Nathan Collins gave the Clays the edge. Awesome result to be playing in finals as a reward for our awesome playing group, and all the passionate and dedicated Clayton members, volunteers and supporters.

State Gas Appliances Reserves report The Clays Twos have been undermanned but brilliant in the last month of the season. Their final outing against Cheltenham demonstrated enormous spirit that is a hallmark of all Clayton teams at every level. Eight goals behind at half time, our boys dug deep to produce a 13 goal to 10 goal second half, on the back of great games by Jordy Collins and Nick Parisi. No finals this

year boys, but plenty to be proud of. Cheers to retiring Reserves coach and Clayton legend Corey Pearce who is hanging up the boots after more than 350 games.

Australian Bullion Company Thirds Report The Thirds went down to Sandown by 27 points to see out the season. The spirit and resilience of the playing group has been outstanding, and our biggest thanks and admiration must go to coach Micky Wills for his endurance in the most trying of circumstances throughout the season. Mate, you are a true Clays champion.

To our hard working Committee, our awesome sponsors, our devoted match day volunteers, and our many, many loyal members and supporters - thanks for your part in the exciting Clays season in 2016. Regardless of how far we go in our finals campaign, by any measure it has been a successful and enjoyable year.

BENTLEIGH By James Kiernan

Having sealed second spot on the ladder and a finals spot, the final round of the home and away season saw us host Mordialloc, a team that needed a win in order play finals. Even with nothing to gain in terms of ladder position we gave Mordi no room for error and played as if it was week one of the finals, as we came back from 19 points down at three-quarter-time to take a 19 point win and knock the bloods out of finals contention. Brody Lawford played a key role in the midfield and added two timely goals, Andrew Walsh dominated in the ruck and Todd McLean played some fine hard-nosed football throughout. Our seniors

will play Oakleigh this Saturday in the qualifying final. Bentleigh’s reserves, having sealed third spot on the ladder, smashed a Mordialloc team that also needed a win to make finals. With a host of good players, no one stood out more than “The General” Liam Corkill. The 114-point win was a dominant display and gives the team strong momentum heading into their qualifying final against Cheltenham this Saturday. E.B Bentleigh’s reserves went down to ladder leaders Dingley in a tough battle. After having more scoring shots to halftime the Vamps were in the game, however couldn’t quite take advantage of their opportunities and fell behind and unfortunately, in the second half Dingley pulled away and won by 64-points. Ben De Nardis was named

best on ground for the Vamps. Despite the loss E.B Bentleigh’s reserves will also play in finals and will play St Kilda City on Sunday. Our Under 19’s finished the year with an unfortunate 88-point loss away to Cheltenham. Although the boys finished with just three wins on the year, the club see’s a bright future in our very young 19’s list.

OAKLEIGH DISTRICT It was truly a momentous day at Princes Hwy last Saturday. A tremendous team performance by the ones propelled us into third place on the ladder at the end of the home and away games.. What a fantastic achievment for our first year back in Divvy one. A great crowd saw us take the game away from StPauls with a brilliant 9 goal second quarter. Another 9 in the last and the score at the end was impressive to all. Team work was once again the theme and it was hard to single out the better players. Suffice to say that we had 22 who all put their shoulder to the wheel. Congrats to all involved most particularly to the coach who deserves this reward for all his effort.

AND : SPEAKING OF THE COACH The committee is extremely pleased to let everyone know that Shayne has agreed to continue on as coach in 2017. We are grateful for that and also for the way Shayne goes about things. Not just a coach, a revenue raiser, a hard worker and a great clubman. Thanks Sheeds and good luck this

and coming weeks.

The reserves also had a terrific day with a resounding win. Such a good way to finish what was really a disappointing year. Nevertheless we are appreciative of your efforts and well done to finish in style. Our thanks go to Rick for his time and effort. I’m sure he won’t miss those late Saturday morning phone calls. Still lads let’s get down to the club and support the Ones and the 19’s

Equal to the seniors, the unders have had a stellar year also finishing in third place. A disappointing way to finish the season though. with a loss to St Pauls on Saturday. We know you are better than that so lets do it right this week on the track and be ready to go on Saturday. Congrats go to Scott and all involved for your fantastic efforts this year.

Very funny night last Saturday at the vote count. To Nicole, Daniel, Joey and Paul our congratulations to you all. Thanks to Scotty P for being the IT man for the night and to the coach for his presentation.

Very happy to say we will be back again next week. We hope with two terrific results.

#OWNTHESOUTHSOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

ST PAULS Netball Grand Final: A great afternoon greeted our netballers for the Division 2 Grand Final against Heatherton. After special introductions and the National Anthem, the girls were a little nervous but pumped up for the challenge.

We had discussed the game plan all week and knew a good start was imperative. That we did. Grace Healey was shooting the lights out and the pressure from our mid court was suffocating the Heatherton attack. We were 6 up at quarter time, but Heatherton made some changes and fought their way back. We held strong and some long bombs from Eliza Barnes kept our lead to 5. Further positional changes after half time changed the dynamics of the match and the effect of the warm weather on players made scoring more difficult. Nonetheless, some outstanding intercepts by Alex Ball and rebounds from Grace Healey kept us in the lead by 4. It was all or nothing in the final term and the girls left nothing in the

tank. Heatherton increased the pressure - we held on. Five minutes to go and getting harder to score. Fresh legs made the difference and Heatherton scored 8 of the last 9 goals for a well deserved premiership. We were not disgraced and the club is proud of the effort and commitment of all who represented us.

We look forward to celebrating our achievements at Presentation Night.

U19: This was an excellent test before the finals commence - we could not advance above fourth on the ladder but faced those holding third, and they had beaten us earlier in the year. After a even first term we put in a 5-5 to 1-1 second term and a great third

for a 34 point margin at the last change. We finished strongly for a 10 goal win.

Harry Hunt was outstanding, easily best afield with strong marking and accurate kicking. Connor Byrne and Brad Dolan gave great drive.

We look forward to facing Cheltenham next Sunday at Springvale - Come along and support the boys.

Reserves: Again we were struggling to field a side and had to call on 7 of our U19s who had already played a full game or concede a forfeit. In the end we were soundly beaten. As the year draws to a close, we must thank our coach Mike Hogan and U19 coach Wayne Herbstreit, without the latter’s help we would not have put a team in the ground, especially in the second half of the season. Finally, appreciation to the team management and all players who kept up their spirit in a hard year.

Seniors: The end of the season was a relief for all - we blooded many young players but lacked depth to cover injuries. Club stalwarts find it hard to miss the finals for the first time in 20 years, but that is the reality of 2016 suburban football. We have great prospects in our young list and we will build from there.

DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTESCHELTENHAM

The members of the Cheltenham Football and Netball Club wish to express their sadness with the news of the passing of Rohan Schreier.

BENTLEIGH R S L Seniors: As Des said after the game we bookended our season with our 2 worst performances of the season in rounds 1 and 18. We have made great strides forward this season and in the off season we will put in place the steps required for success in 2107.

ROYAL OAK HOTEL Reserves: Again with numbers down put up a great win. It is now this week that the season’s efforts are rewarded with a place in the Qualifying Final. The club are right behind you in efforts in the coming weeks.

BOORAN HOLDEN SOUTHLAND THIRDS: A long challenging season came to an end on Saturday. Many thanks to all involved in the side for their efforts in season 2016.

NAUTILUS MARINE COLTS: A place in Sunday’s Elimination Final was at stake on Saturday and at ½ time that was looking precarious. A different group came out after the long break and ran out very comfortable victors. Play at your optimum and the sky is the limit.

GOODCHILD BUILDERS NETBALL: Div 8 PREMIERS! Congratulations to the girls on their meritorious victory on Sunday. A first Netball premiership for the club.

Starting Sat Sept 3 we have 4 weekends of Second Division Finals we are hosting, so again let’s put on a show with our volunteers support and make it 4 big weeks of community football.

MORDIALLOCIt’s safe to say that things did not go according to plan in round 18 of the 2016 season. Losses in both the firsts and reserves at Bentleigh mean that for the first time since 2012 there would be no finals football for Mordialloc. And it hurts.

The seconds came into their match very undermanned against a fast, confident and well-drilled Bentleigh unit. Kicking into the wind in the first quarter we found ourselves 34 points down, and were unable to reduce that margin by the main break. It was after half time that things really went pear-shaped and Bentleigh ran riot, giving us a walloping that we do not want to

remember. All our goalkickers were singles, Chris Roggero was far and away our best player, James Roberts and Morgan Harris were also among our best.

We can’t be upset at all about the effort that our firsts put in. They gave it everything. It’s just that Bentleigh, who showed nothing to suggest that they won’t go deep into September themselves, were just a little bit better. Six goals with the wind in the first quarter started us off, but five misses in the second quarter turned out to be somewhat problematic. Turning for home with a three goal lead we thought that we might be able to hold Bentleigh off, but they played an inspired last quarter

kicking six goals to nothing. Sadly, as with the seconds, results elsewhere in the division did us no favours whatsoever, and the season was therefore ended. Matt Ravenall kicked 3 to lead the goalkickers, with Todd Bastion, Beau Turner and Rowan Andrews our best on the day.

I urge all Mordialloc supporters to hold their heads high. Our teams have given us a wonderful ride over the past four years, and we can’t thank them enough for that. There is no reason to suggest that our success cannot resume next season, so stay on board. Thanks also go to the committee, volunteers and sponsors for keeping the machine ticking over. See you all bigger and better in 2017.

#OWNTHESOUTHSOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

The final round of Division 2 in the Southern Football Netball League is done and dusted and the top five is locked and loaded ready to go for finals.

Skye 14.7 (91) def Springvale Districts 6.2 (38) The Bombers did enough to secure a victory against the Districts but missed out on a top three spot by less than one per cent and will tackle Highett in an Elimination Final this weekend. Kyle Gascoigne was in stunning form in front of the big sticks, bagging five majors while Cameron Petrie (three goals) was named best on ground for his efforts alongside Michael Kelly and James Bateman. Springvale did enough to retain hope of causing an upset in the first half, kicking five goals to only trail by seven points at the half time break, but Skye prevailed in a dominant second half and bagged eight goals to one to secure a 53-point win.

Keysborough 5.11 (41) def by Chelsea Heights 16.8 (104) The Heighters finished off the home and away season in style, recording a comfortable 63-poin win against the Burra and doing their form going into finals no harm. Phil Smith was prolific in front of goal, bagging seven majors while Lachlan Dobson continued to show his worth as a second spot up forward with five goals. Jessie Odell and Jarryd Uren were named best on ground. Chelsea Heights took control of the game from the opening bounce, kicking eight goals in the first half to build a 35-point advantage at the main break before kicking another eight goals in the second half to claim win number 14 for the season.

Port Melbourne Colts 13.16 (94) def Hampton 6.8 (44) It may not have been their most convincing or polished performance of the year but the Colts maintained their unbeaten run during the home and away season to claim a maiden minor premiership in Division 2. Mitch Clark and David McGregor each bagged four goals and were dangerous throughout the afternoon while Jackson Brown and Stacy Massis were influential with their efforts across the ground. A five-goal second term set up the victory for Port Melbourne as it turned a 28-point half time lead in 58 points at three quarter time, before finishing up 50-point winners.

Murrumbeena 8.10 (58) def by Highett 8.16 (54) This match lived up to the hype as both sides threw everything they had at each other in order to secure a coveted finals position. In the end the Dogs were able to secure the four points and fifth spot on the ladder after holding off a fast finishing Beena outfit. Charles Kinsey was in strong form with two goals while Yianni Pasialis was named best on ground for his efforts as Highett held a 14-point lead going into the half time break. In a day which saw the victors waste several opportunities in

front of goal, the Dogs were able to keep the Beena to just one behind in the third term but failed to capitalise with only the one major increasing their lead to 22 points. Determined to not let its season slip away, Murrumbeena came roaring home in the final term, piling on four goals to get within reach of Highett. It was almost enough but in the end, one major from the Dogs was able to ensure they got across the line and into fifth spot on the ladder.

Finals Week 1 Preview A contingency of coaches and players from Port Melbourne will likely be spotted at Jack Barker Oval in Cheltenham, the venue for the Division 2 finals, on Saturday, keeping a close eye on potential semi-final opponents Chelsea Heights and Caulfield, while Skye takes on Highett in the Elimination Final on Sunday.

Qualifying Final – Saturday 3rd September

Chelsea Heights v Caulfield (Jack Barker Oval) When both of these sides are at their best, it is very hard to split them but at the moment Chelsea Heights are in the in-form team and will deservedly go in as favourites. This match could go down to forward structure and which forwards can have more of an impact. Can Phil Smith and Lachlan Dobson stand tall and tower over Caulfield’s back half or will Nick Gilbert re-discover is early season form and kick the Bears into week two of the finals? Watch out for ex-Melbourne star Travis Johnstone whose AFL experience is likely to serve not only himself, but Chelsea Heights well throughout the match. The likes of Josh Wood, Jason Twirdy and Mick Harrington will be called upon to have an influence for the Bears.

Elimination Final – Sunday 4th September

Skye v Highett (Jack Barker Oval) Neither side will take the other lightly in what will be a highly intriguing and most likely entertaining contest. The Bombers are known for being a stingy defensive side with a knack for shutting down the competition’s best forwards while the Dogs are a side with enormous firepower but a lack of consistency in front of goal. The big question is can Skye shut down Highett but if not, can the Dogs capitalise on their opportunities in front of goal. Chad Ryan and Joel Jones-Hampton will need to be at their best for Highett to win the game while the experience of Beau Jedd, Tom Brown and Pat Singh will be called upon to guide the Dogs to victory. For the Bombers, the Ben’s (Evans and Walker) have been outstanding throughout the year while the return of captain Aaron Pacey and emergence of James Bateman and Michael Kelly has been crucial to their success and the trio are X-factors going into the clash.

DIVISION 2: CLUB NOTES

HIGHETT

LMC Laser Highett club notes. Thankyou to all who helped out last Saturday. The Reserves and Seniors have both made the Finals to be played this Sunday. Good luck to all involved [hope luck is NOT needed]. It has been an interesting journey, lets continue and see how far we can go. GO DOGGIES.

HAMPTONBendigo Bank Highett-Senior Report We made the long track to Port Melbourne to take on the ladder leaders. We were presented with our best conditions for a number of months, which both teams lapped up.

It was the first time all season we didn’t have any under 19’s, which made the team look somewhat aged but the boys bonded well and wanted to go out on a high.

In the first, both backlines were well on top but Lochie took a well contested mark to convert for our only major for the quarter. The second provided a more open game with the Colts having plenty of chances to nail the game but didn’t bring their kicking boots. The boys worked extremely hard and caught the Colts out the back twice through hard running by Grovey and Lochie to be only five down at the half.

In the third Port took control of the contest and extended their lead to 10 goals by the break. In the last, the boys brought their best intensity for the day and won the

quarter kicking into the wind. The boys were outrunning their opponents and Jesse, Man Bun and Captain Sheddars all hit the scoreboard to reduce the margin to 8 goals at the final siren.

Big Patty turned it on and played his best for the year, Nicko and Diggers were rock solid as per usual, Captain Sheddars and Toddy lead from the front all day, Yeowie and Lochie provided a target up forward.

I would like to thank all our off field helpers during the year, the trainers in Pat, Declan and Imogen, Zany and Sniffer been our Team Manager and stats man, Sticks the Runner and finally to all our Coaches in Doggy, Walshy, Ox, Shippa, Lochie and Vanzo for their valuable assistance through a long nine months. All of us shouldn’t forget the hardworking committee that makes this all possible with the endless hours put in for the love of the Club, so a special thank you to Mick, Timmsy, Nicko, Kelee, Harro, Chicken, Burgs, Billo and Wally.

Choices Flooring Frankston - U19’s Report Hampton under 19’s took on Hallam this week at Peterson street reserve. It was a huge game for us because a win would ensure top spot and Hallam were one of two teams who had beaten us this year and we were out for redemption. Game started really tight with Hallam matching us for intensity. Hampton went in a quarter time 3 goals up. After quarter time our side started to dominate the contested footy and kept goalless till half time. The aim for the second half was to keep our structures and continue to defend well. We did this only allowing 2 goals to be kicked by Hallam for the match and a convincing win to Hampton. We also secured the minor premiership which is the first time in Hamptons history. Best players were James Gascard and Bunarith Kheng.

Hampton FNC wish to thank the continuing support of the sponsors: Wallers Bakery, Highett Village Meats, Choices Flooring Frankston, Local Milk Supply, Smartinsure, Ashfords, Bendigo Bank Highett, Javen Construction, Highett RSL. Please visit our website or FB page for further details.

MURRUMBEENAON THE FIELD The Highett Bulldogs came to the Beena Arena last Saturday. Both the Senior and Reserves games were important going into the finals.

In the Reserves game the Bulldogs got off to a blinder kicking four goals before Murrumbeena got on the board. They were well in front at quarter time. The second quarter saw the Beena come back and there was only a point in it at half time. The third quarter saw a tight tussle between two determined sides. The scores were level at three quarter time. In the last quarter the Beena took the game by the throat and poured on the goals. In the end it was a good win for the Murrumbeena Magoo’s. Well done boys. Some of our best players were: - Rory Cahalane, Shaun Thompson,

Robbie Hyde, Chris Smith, Mark Richardson and Will Nash.

In the Seniors game our boys wore Beyond Blue socks in Memory of Rohan Schreier. “Önce a Beena man Always a Beena Man.” Highett got off to a good start and were in front at quarter time in a low scoring quarter. The second quarter saw the Bulldogs backline hold out the Beena against the wind. Both teams were inaccurate in front of goal. In the third quarter the Beena boys were battling into the wind and had a hard time preventing the Bulldogs from kicking goals. In the final quarter we had the wind and a flurry of goals in the last 10 minutes of the game saw Murrumbeena draw to within six points. On the whole it was a good win for Highett, but we fought to the end. Some of our better players were: - Jarrod Walker, James Shirley, Dylan Elkman, Luke Porter, Eddie Espinosa and Dechlan Turkington.

MYKELTI’S DAY OUT

JAPAN PIPS KEYSY IN A CLASSIC

TON UP FOR FRY

SFNL MEDIA DESK

It’s fair to say St Kilda City Under 19 star Mykelti Lefau had a reasonable day out on Saturday morning.

While the Saints enjoyed a comfortable 162-point triumph over Carrum Patterson Lakes at Roy Dore Reserve, all the focus was on the big fella as he racked up the goals at an astounding rate.

His goal after the final siren brought up his 25th for the afternoon – yes, 25! – in one of the most dominant performances ever witnessed at SFNL level.

His stunning tally comfortably eclipsed Mount Waverley spearhead James Gough’s 20-goal effort back in Round 10, a day in which the Mountain Lions booted 54 goals against Sandown.

To put Lefau’s dominance into perspective, he finished with 25.4 out of his team’s total of 28.10-178, and, with CPL managing just two for the day, it meant that just five goals for the entire match didn’t come off his boot. Staggering!

By all accounts Lefau was simply unstoppable, rag-dolling

opponents, splitting packs, clunking towering grabs and kicking them from everywhere. And it didn’t matter how many opponents he had on him, either!

SFNL Hall of Fame umpire Peter Martin, who had the pleasure of umpiring this game, later described Lefau’s day the most incredible individual performance he has ever seen from a junior football in his near 40-year career with the whistle.

Amazingly, Lefau backed it up with a run in the seniors later in the day. Martin revealed that the St Kilda City runner told Lefau to come and sit down in the last quarter to conserve energy for the later game.

Unfortunately, he hadn’t specified on the bench, so the big fella parked his backside on the turf in the goal square. Nobody had the guts to tell him otherwise!

Lefau is also a highly talented Rugby League player, having been selected in the Melbourne Storm Under 18 Development Squad, but let’s hope he ditches the northern code in favour of AFL, as he certainly has the talent to go long way!

It was a fantastic day last Sunday with the Burra thirds taking on the Japan Warriors Development Squad in a friendly match at Keysborough Reserve.

Tremendous sportsmanship was shown by all of the Keysy boys, and they could not have been more accommodating in all aspects of the day.

Most importantly, it was a tremendous display or football from both teams.

Although the result was largely irrelevant, for the record the Japan Warriors got home by a point in an absolute thriller.

We believe the party is still going!

Chelsea Heights fan favourite Jackson Fry will this weekend play his 100th game for the club.

And he has picked a huge match to bring up, with his team taking on Caulfield in Saturday’s Division 2 Qualifying Final.

Fry joined the Heighters from the Carrum Patterson Lakes juniors in 2010, and has immediately displayed

his leadership credentials. Fry has captained the club’s Under 19 side, and is currently a deputy vice captain in the senior team.

A noted goal kicker, Fry won the league Under 19s goalkicking award in 2013. He currently has 179 majors to his name, with a career best haul of 18 against Hallam in the Under 19s competition back in 2012.

Well done, Jackson!

#OWNTHESOUTHSOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

Now that we are at the business end of the year and the finals have started, the one constant is that the Umpires get to participate every year: The umps might not win an premiership but we don’t lose and we are in action right through to the final weekend of the season each and every year.

To smell the spring grass, to look up and see and hear the big crowds and witness at

first hand the best teams on display fighting for every contest down to the wire is indeed a privileged position to be in every September whether it be an Under 19 Semi-Final or the Division 1 Senior Grand Final.

The SFNL Umpiring Department prides itself on getting the job done, giving the competing clubs the best umpires we can produce and ensuring that every match is adjudicated in a highly professional, fair and consistent manner.

To attain these outcomes, all umpires (goal, boundary and field) are heavily scrutinised throughout the season and once the finals come around, the spotlight falls even more heavily on their performances, commitment, fitness levels, teamwork and attitude, amongst a range of benchmarks they need to attain.

As a coaching group, we are looking for umpires who will stay cool and composed in the finals atmosphere, who get the job done well without being noticed and who cope best in the pressure cooker environment.of the finals.

We allocate coaches/observers for each discipline at all finals and umpires are generally given feedback at half time and after the game on their performance addressing areas they

did well in and areas they need to improve on.

On-field decisions are left to the running umpires; as Coaches we are not instructing umpires to target specific players or teams, but simply to have a feel for the game and to adjust to the conditions, whether it be the weather, size of the ground, style of play etc. Free kicks are not talked about during the game, but umpires are advised on positioning, control and working together.

Our observers record statistics such as the number of free kicks paid and where they occur, if they are correct or incorrect, if interpretations are consistent, if scoring shots resulted from decisions, if 50m metre penalties have been awarded correctly and so on.

To be appointed to a Grand Final is a treasured moment and we as a group have a huge obligation to ensure to the League and clubs that we have selected the correct people to go unnoticed and assist in making each final a good spectacle for the players and supporters.

Our umpires train on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and attend coaching sessions on Thursdays, where they reflect on the previous week’s match and formulate a match plan for the following weekend’s game. Just as in the home and away season, video footage is used to assist in reviewing the previous week’s performances.

Umpires who are keen for finals success pay attention to rehab, recovery and match preparation, with all these areas leading to improved on-field performances

Our coaches and observers are accessible during the finals and, given the correct approach and if time permits, they will be happy to answer your questions.

Good luck to all competing teams and of course to the umpires.

DIVISION 3 RESULTS: WEEK 1 FINALSElimination Final

South Yarra 10.9 (69) def by Hallam 10.12 (72) Spring announced itself early as bright sunshine greeted the Elimination Final crowd.

A two-goal lead to South Yarra at half time was the biggest margin between the sides at any of the breaks.

Their opponent, Hallam, pulled the deficit back to three points by the final change.

When play recommenced, the Hawks continued to apply pressure, but South Yarra’s defence was resolute.

South Yarra’s Joey Smith typified the spirit of players from both sides.

He spoiled his opponent after Manny Peresso kicked long into the Hawks’ forward line. When the ball ended up in Hallam hands, Smith applied fierce pressure, forcing a poor kick.

Neither side relented, and Hallam was soon rewarded for its efforts with a goal and a narrow lead.

The sides then went goal for goal until the decisive moment arrived at the 19-minute mark.

Kevin Atkin marked for Hallam in the forward line, with his side trailing narrowly.

His accurate shot was the final score, giving the Hawks a three-point win.

Hallam’s Daniel Chin was outstanding throughout the contest and was clearly the winner’s best player.

Shane Thomas’ marking and goal kicking proved critical and he finished with six of the Hawks’ 10 majors.

Qualifying Final

Doveton Eagles 6.14 (50) def by Ashwood 11.9 (75) Underdog Ashwood turned the tables on Qualifying Final opponent Doveton, after the Eagles recently defeated the Magpies by eight goals.

The Magpies were well organised and determined, combining well in defence to bring many Doveton attacking efforts unstuck.

Matt Maginnes’ ability to mark in the backline promised to be an important factor in this match and he didn’t let his Magpie mates down.

He played well throughout the day, and defensive marks he took in the second quarter helped keep the Eagles at bay when they threatened to score crucial goals against the breeze.

The Eagles finished the match with nobody available on the bench.

Midfielder Stuart Johnson was stretchered off with a shoulder injury.

Fellow Doveton players Enayte Samadi, Sean Paynter and Matthew O’Callaghan also suffered injuries.

Compounding this, Doveton lacked discipline conceding far too many free kicks and 50-metre penalties.

But it would be wrong to take away credit from Ashwood for its win.

The Magpies took advantage when they had the wind behind them and this factor became more crucial in the second half as the breeze increased in strength.

Doveton was plagued by inaccuracy throughout the contest, with Adam Read a major culprit in a spree of behinds.

The Magpies won by 25 points.

Wearing number 45 instead of his customary 2 had no ill effect on Paul Wineberg as he helped set up the Magpies’ win with four goals.

His teammate Mitch Saunders kicked a couple of goals and was the winner’s best.

Doveton’s Brett Hidgcock was named the player of the day by the SFNL radio team.

WEEK 2 FINALS PREVIEW

Second Semi Final – Saturday 3 September

Mount Waverley vs Ashwood (Meade Reserve) Mount Waverley will be the side under most pressure after going through the home and away season unbeaten.

Ashwood revels in the underdog tag and proved how dangerous it can be with a solid win over Doveton to start its finals campaign.

As commendable as that performance was, taking on the Mountain Lions will stretch Ashwood’s defence.

Mount Waverley has the top two goal kickers in the division in James Gough, who has kicked 101, and Luke Galle with 74.

Chris Jeffries and Ian Taylor are other skilled Mountain Lions likely to prove menacing around goal.

If Ashwood doesn’t gain control of the midfield, its defenders are unlikely to contain Mount Waverley’s forward firepower.

But, with Dale Carroll who has 57 goals this season and Paul Wineberg with 30, Ashwood will pose a threat if it can get the ball forward often enough.

The Magpies will have to contend with Mountain Lions’ skipper Jarrod Wilkin, arguably the division’s best player.

If Ashwood fails to deliver the ball accurately to its forwards and bombs it in, Wilkin will be hard to outmark.

Mitch Saunders will be a major factor for the Magpies. He is a skillful onballer capable of providing opportunities for teammates, but able to finish the job himself, with 27 goals for the season.

Ashwood will give a good account of itself, but it is hard to envisage Mount Waverley failing to take the direct passage into the Grand Final.

First Semi Final – Sunday 4 September

Doveton Eagles vs Hallam (Keysborough Reserve) After a strong home and away season in which it lost just three games, Doveton finds itself facing the prospect of a straight-sets exit from the finals.

Waiting to seize its chance is a young Hallam side brimming with confidence after a thrilling Elimination Final win.

Co-captain Manny Peresso and Daniel Chin are capable of providing plenty of chances for the Hallam forwards, and Shane Thomas and Steven Sigeti are a couple of those most likely to take advantage.

They are both strong marks and played well in the Elimination Final, although Sigeti did not capitalise on some fine work and will need to be more accurate against the Eagles.

Clint Wilson is likely to give Doveton’s midfielders first use of the ball with his ruck work and his namesake and coach Corrie is sure to be one of the beneficiaries.

Brett Hidgcock is another in-form Eagle able to help his team win the midfield battle.

Further injuries to Doveton players last week are likely to pose a stern test of the team’s depth.

The Eagles have been forced to cover the loss of quality players such as Peter Dye and Darren Ramsdale for much of the season, placing pressure on Adam Read to perform up forward.

More often than not he has delivered, kicking 51 goals to date.

It is unlikely the Eagles will suffer from the inaccuracy that afflicted them against Ashwood and Hallam will have to be at its best to win.

There is a real spirit to the Hawks and they have an excellent opportunity to grab a spot in the Preliminary Final.

SANDOWN COBRASThirds It was a very exciting time for the Thirds, we played hard against Clayton, Coach Matt McCormick had encouraged his team to play their best as always and enjoy the game. Convinced this was our last game for the season by landing 6th on the ladder the boys achieved a win against Clayton, they all joined with officials and supporters in the rooms for an enthusiastic rendition of the Club Song. Coach McCormick praised his players for concentrated efforts as well as best on field

J Hurford, K Om, M Jolley, J Hewitt, R Logan and R Ettridge, it was a magnificent team effort. Coach McCormick’s face was priceless when informed that by percentage only over South Yarra we had secured a Finals place. We play Endeavour Hills next week Go Cobras!

All Abilities It was beyond a doubt one of the most enjoyable matches to be seen this year. Our All Abilities won their Grand Final, they were ecstatic with the outcome. Coach Doug West admitted that prior to the game he was nervous, but his

team were not they went out and enjoyed every minute of it. When the final siren went it was a time for immense rejoicing. Coach West said he was so very proud! Final Scores were Sandown 10 9 69 to 3 2 20.

Thank you on behalf of all the Club to our volunteers and supporters you have all been amazing!

Reserves Report: Late withdrawals have been a

signature of our season and a couple this week didn’t help but on the day Endeavour were the better side as they had more run through the middle and made the most of their opportunities. Our defenders were therefore always under the pump with Sheppy and Dan our best ably supported by Beau and the Swingman. A Sunday game beckons and we will have to be a little smarter in what we do but some fine additions will help. All to play for so heads up and let’s support each other as the test for team Ashwood is now.

Thanks to all on the day especially Nads and Mick who maintained a professional approach as always in what was a long day.

Seniors Report: We played Doveton at Hallam with the winner to play Mt Waverley in the 2nd Semi. We kicked against a strong wind in the 1st quarter and went into the first break 13 points behind. The defence was strong with Hodgey, Boofa, Sal, Willo, Smithy and Langers keeping a tight rein on the Eagles attack. In the 2nd quarter we slammed on 6 goals to lead by 23 points at the long

break. Chappie was dynamic and provided the forwards with plenty of opportunities. Bergs across half forward stood out with strong marking and kicked 4 goals for the game. Mitch was in everything and showed what a class player he is and he was well assisted by Pickle and Ricky O. Sculls was a welcome return from injury and played a very good role and had a lot of the ball. The third term saw us contain Doveton and we went into the last quarter with a slender lead. Other good players in a very good team effort were Gus, Buddy and Brad who battled hard in the ruck. At 3 quarter time Mick emphasised the need to keep running and pressuring the opposition and not to think the wind will do it for us and it was a strong showing In the final term as we ran out winners by 25 points to set up a clash with Mount. Good luck to the boys in this week’s game.

UNDER 19: ON THE UP / ALEX CHARLES

The final round of an incredible season took place on the weekend. With finals places sorted, the weekend was more about the top five fine-tuning their plans for next week. For the lower half of the ladder, the final game posed a chance to look ahead to season 2017.

Cheltenham officially secured fifth position and the last spot in the finals with a resounding 88-point win over East Brighton-Bentleigh. With 14 scoring shots, the Vampires ended a difficult season in a respectable manner, but were unable to match Cheltenham’s class.

Troy Davis continued his stellar form heading into finals football with five majors to take his tally to 38 for the year. And his performance was necessary, as his side trailed by two points at the main break. Fortunately for them, Cheltenham outscored the Vampires 94-4 during the second half in what was a great way to prepare for next week.

Hampton made sure of top place and a deserved minor premiership with a 72-point win to end a fantastic season by the Hallam Hawks. The Hammers now get the crucial week off in what could prove vital for their physical and mental state come the last two weeks of the season.

Their finals counterparts, Oakleigh District and St Pauls, were fortunate enough to meet on the eve of finals. The Bulldogs were way too strong with a 62-point win but it was only two quarters where their intensity proved too much to handle.

Oakleigh’s finals opponents, St Kilda City, downed Carrum by 164 points, thereby putting the side on notice to be on their game. The defending champions are looking ready to go as we head into the pointy end of the season. Incredibly, Mykelti Lefau kicked 25 goals. This feat has earned him the top spot in the goal kicking and it should be emphasised just how amazing the effort is!

Lastly, Dingley and Endeavour Hills ended their season with a scrappy affair as the Falcons prevailed by 37 points. The Dingoes had an indifferent campaign after being a regular finals side but the side has done well given the player exits from seasons gone. For Endeavour Hills, their 2016 campaign ensures they have plenty to work with for 2017! They could definitely be a team for the future.

Furthermore, we’d like to congratulate Lefau on winning this year’s goal kicking tally! The star forward ended with 69 goals, 15 ahead of Oakleigh’s Liam McCabe following his insane 25-goal haul in the final round.

Congratulations is also warranted for the finals sides as we look ahead to games between; Cheltenham and St Pauls; and Oakleigh and St Kilda City. These fixtures should leave little to the imagination and we anticipate some close affairs.

Ultimately, we look forward to seeing more of the eliminated sides back for season 2017 and wish the top five the best of luck next week. You can see all of the finals matches at the Springvale Reserve!

#OWNTHESOUTHSOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

Season 2016 has been run and won. Grand final day was a magnificent experience for all that watched it, with over 800 people attending the Rowan Road courts over the course of the afternoon. The dominant Heatherton club played in seven Grand Finals, and won the top three divisions, but it was heartening to see several clubs win their first ever premierships down the grades.

Heatherton played Dingley in the top division, trying to prevent a fourth straight Dingley Grand Final win. The first quarter of the match was as perfect for Heatherton as it was disastrous for Dingley. Heatherton’s stated aim was to come out swinging and break Dingley early, and at 12-2 half way through the term as Rahni Samason and Nat Billings took advantage of her side’s complete control of the centre court. Dingley got a little rhythm late in the quarter but a 21-9 quarter time advantage was decisive in the final wash-up.

Dingley pulled the margin back to eight in the first seven minutes of the second quarter as Alicia Wise, Sara Merkus and Nicki Tulley got some combinations working in the Dingoes’ best period of the match. The black and white defence, led by the excellent Kirsten Daley and Bayley Mifsud, weren’t standing for that though and allowed Heatherton to steady and lead 35-22 at the main break. From there everything had to go right for Dingley, but the first four goals of the second half for Heatherton put paid to their chances, and allowed them to go goal for goal from there.

The three-quarter time huddles with Heatherton having a 17-goal advantage were rather quiet affairs with Heatherton encouraging their players to enjoy the moment and Dingley looking to take something out of the game and move forward. Jess Payne and Sarah Fischer converted a few chances late on but Heatherton were too good on the day, and 67-46 was the final margin on the day. The best on court medal was awarded to Heatherton co-captain Zali Mifsud, and I would have liked to have seen her GPS as she covered every inch of the mid-court. Heatherton only lost one match for the season, and were very worthy of the premiership mantle.

The Division 2 grand final was one heck of a battle, and was as unexpected as the Division 1 match, albeit in a very different way. For Heatherton’s second side has been as dominant as their first, only losing once to their grand final opponents St Pauls. Here it was St Pauls that were out of the blocks like lightning, moving the ball swiftly and surely and feeding quality possession to their excellent shooters Grace Healey and Eliza Barnes. When Heatherton went on attacking raids they were thwarted by the Saints led by intercepting defender Alex Ball. A 16-10 quarter time lead may have been unexpected before the game began, but St Pauls drew confidence from their effort. Heatherton threw

everything they had at St Pauls, and Bella Riddell was in fine shooting form, but at the other end Barnes and Healey just did not miss, keeping the Saints in front.

The turning point may well have come in the first minute of the third quarter, when a contested ball left Heatherton’s inspirational skipper Nicki Arnold with a game-ending shoulder injury. Mandy Quinn was thrust into the pivot and played the game of her life, covering great distance and controlling the play brilliantly. Still St Pauls turned for home six goals to the good and looking for all the world like champions, but if this game was over someone forgot to tell the Heatherton girls. The defensive pairing of Belinda Kay and Kirsty Mann really stood up, Bella Riddell and Sophie Clark shot the lights out at the other end, and two minutes from time Heatherton took the lead, which they held to close out victory by 45-41. Mandy Quinn’s mid-court efforts won her best on court honours.

Division 3 was another brilliant contest from beginning to end. Heatherton started the stronger over their Dingley opponents, opening up a 10-6 lead at quarter time, but Dingley turned that around in the second quarter to lead by one at the long break. The defensive divisions played brilliantly in the third term, with Heatherton’s Erin Naismith and Alex Riddell, and Dingley’s Eleanor Douglas making their opponents work for every goal. Dingley led by two at the last change, but that deficit was wiped off in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. From there it was goal for goal until the last three minutes, when Heatherton took a two goal lead that they held until the final siren. 35-33 was the final score. Heatherton attacker Bubba Ashin was a deserving best on court after a game in which she never stopped working and was a constant danger to the Dingley defence.

Division 4 saw South Yarra make the early running against the young and agile Heatherton White. The obvious task for South Yarra was to shut down crack shooter Chelsey McAndrew, which they did well by making sure that the ball didn’t breach the goal circle, leading 10-5 at the first break which was extended to 18-12 at half time with defences still on top. Heatherton started to make their charge in the third quarter but South Yarra stood strong to lead at three-quarter time by four. In a brilliant quarter of netball Heatherton threw everything bar the kitchen sink at their opponents, and level at 24-24. Both sides had their chances, and with another couple of minutes on the clock it could all have been different, but at the final siren South Yarra held sway by the narrowest of margins, 29-28. The inspirational and combative Kristina Stewart may have finished on the wrong side of the scoreboard, but was the worthy recipient of the best-on-court medal.

Black Rock were very impressive in hauling in an early lead in their Semi Final against Heatherton. Two weeks later

THE CUT AND DRIVE – GRAND FINALS / HUGH MACLEAN Heatherton went in level at quarter time, but that’s as close as they got as the Jetballers assumed control and extended their lead to five at half time and nine at three-quarter time. The much-vaunted Black Rock defence centred around Bec Goodear, Sarah McCormack and Sarah Rayment had been in a very frugal mood throughout the afternoon. Now in the last quarter they tightened the screw even further while their shooters further up the court began to score at will, and a score of 48-30 brought premiership glory to the red and black. For her defensive prowess and calm leadership, Bec Goodear was named best on court.

Caulfield had shown bags of heart and determination in coming from the Elimination Final to the Grand Final, but this was a bridge too far for the gallant Bears. Lyndhurst were out of the blocks like a shot, and led by nine before Caulfield found their bearings. The Bears countered with three straight just before the first break but the Lightning steadied to lead 17-9 at quarter time. That lead proved decisive as Lyndhurst’s lead was eleven at both the half and three-quarter time breaks. Caulfield showed their tenacity by winning the last quarter but it was Lyndhurst that triumphed to take their first silverware in their first season in the SFNL. Solid, organised defender Melissa Lanyon led all comers to be crowned best on court.

Mount Waverley were not fancied by many to get past Heatherton in the Grand Final. Heatherton took the minor premiership and had the week’s rest, while Mount Waverley needed extra time in the Preliminary Final to match them. Mount Waverley had the bit between their teeth early though, and took a 13-9 lead to the first change. Heatherton levelled early in the second term but Mount Waverley came again to lead by five at half time, a lead that was extended to six at the last change. Heatherton did not

give up the premiership easily, but Mount Waverley, led by captain-coach and best on court Madeleine Boros, finished victorious by 44-41.

Heatherton were also fancied in Division 8 against Cheltenham having only been beaten once, and started like it, leading 13-8 at the first change and looking dangerous from all over the court, but Cheltenham flew at them in the second quarter. Heatherton were kept to just three scores for the quarter while Cheltenham took the lead by half time. The third term was a cut-and-thrust affair with Cheltenham taking the merest advantage into the final quarter, but what a cracker that final quarter was! Cheltenham got out to a 32-26 lead, which was levelled at 33-33. It was Cheltenham that were strongest in the crucial last few minutes, drawing away to a 36-34 victory. Lauren Geschke in defence was named best on court.

Under 19s was an all-Dingley affair, but any notion of any backing off during this game was dispelled very early in the piece, as both sides left no doubt that they wanted this premiership. Dingley Two were undefeated throughout the season, and showed their supremacy early in this match, leading by five at the first change and doubling that advantage by half time. Dingley One rallied after half time but could make no impression, and Dingley Two finished victorious by 40-27. Tall defender Gemma Reynolds was dominant throughout the day, and quite rightly was adjudged best on court.

If I may be allowed a little word personally, I would like to thank in the last column for the year all those who have assisted me wherever needed, and have turned a netball novice into a confirmed fan of the game at Southern League level and the magnificent ladies that play it. All the best to all for the off-season – see you all in 2017.

UMPIRES’ CORNER / THE WHITE KNIGHT

Our umpiring group was saddened to learn of the passing of Rohan Schreier last week. Rohan was a larger than life figure in our League for many years, waving the flags in over 100 games for our Association, well-known on 88.3 Southern FM for his work with the SFL/SFNL commentary team, and for his coaching roles with several of our clubs. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Hannah Bailes will remember her first open age final for a long time. Not only did she pay her $5 car parking fee at Hallam last week (with the other umpires being waved through) but her choice of parking places left a little to be desired. When she arrived back at the car, it was well and truly bogged. Luckily, a very chivalrous Thomas Grundy, seeing a damsel in distress, rushed to her aid, and, despite his sartorial elegance, braved the mud to tow her car to safety. While on the subject of parking, patrons at SFNL games are advised to be very careful where they park during the finals as Joel Lewis and Paige Hinrichs have recently obtained P plates.

For a former school teacher, Marshie doesn’t seem overly impressed with the importance of school attendance. When a boundary umpire explained that he couldn’t run a midweek game because of school commitments, Marshie responded with “forget school – you’re not going to learn anything”. Then again, Marshie could have been commenting on the umpire’s ability to learn rather than the quality of his education!

The league has introduced a Golden Point to decide the winner of a drawn final if scores are tied after ten minutes of extra time. First score wins! Boundary and goal umpires will need to be on the ball if a shot sails over the top of the behind post! Sam Bridges is an expert on the Golden Point after his SMJFL experiences – he gave a short presentation after training last week on Drawn Procedure Procedures, whatever that means!

A useful aid for a goal umpire is a scorecard. It is much easier to keep score when you have a scorecard (and pencil/pen) with you. Evidently, a couple of our goalies tried an alternative way of keeping score recently but found it less reliable!

Joel Davis has been working on colour co-ordination recently with his red laces matching his hair! Now that Marshie has directed him to use white laces in the finals, Joel may soon be sporting a new bleached hairstyle!

Congratulations to the many SFNL umpires who ran SMJFL Grand Finals last week. Of the 18 Grand Finals, all but four featured at least one SFNL umpire!

Jack Duncanson and Courtney Stelling (the SMJFL Golden Whistle winner) again boundary umpired the Under 17 Div 1 Grand Final, with Patrick Aurish in the goals. SFNL umpires who field umpired in Under 17 finals were Patrick Aurish, Adam Bailes, Vinay Lakshman and Jake Rositani.

A trio of SFNL umpires, Hannah Bailes, Jack Cunnington and Tom Strudwick, field umpired the Under 16 Div 1 Grand Final, while Ned Couper-Johnson and Daryl Stonehouse also field umpired an Under 16 Grannie alongside his daughter Laura who ran the boundary.

Glenn Emery, Matt Mahoney, Nick Ritchie, Michael Whelan and Tom Scawen umpired Under 15 Grannies, Paul Creedon, Hannah Layzell and Kevin Mitchell umpired Under14 Grannies, while David Coates and Brendan Serle were in action in Girls Grand Finals.

Darcy Trewarn’s ambition to play in a Grand Final was extinguished when Murrumbeena lost their Under 17 first semi, but Darcy still saw Grand Final action as a boundary umpire in the Under 15s. He may yet see September action in an SFNL Grannie!

The relationship between our Association and the SMJFL grows stronger each year. A number of SFNL umpires have been involved in looking after our SMJFL colleagues with Sam Bridges as Head Coach, Nathan Guy and Cam Watts coaching first year fieldies, Nick Bergman coaching the more experienced umpires and managing match day appointments and Tom Grundy looking after uniforms and registrations. Many experienced SFNL umpires, including the President himself, have mentored their younger SMJFL colleagues, while a new generation of SMJFL umpires like Hannah Layzell, Sam Gardiner, Toby Allsop, Matt Stratton, Nick Ritchie, Campbell James, Cassie Collier and Darcy Trewarn are making their mark in the SFNL. A special thank you as well to SFNL goal umps: Jim Alwer, Tony Levett, Dave Weatherhead, Tevan D’Souza, Rob Roscoe, Calvin Thom & Bill Keilar who goal umpired throughout the SMJFL finals series.

We will celebrate the Division 3 Grand Final appointments with a meal after training on Thursday September 15. Appointments for Umpires being selected to umpire in a Grand Final in the last week of the season will be announced at the SFNL Umpiring Grand Final Appointments Night, which is being held from 7pm on Wednesday September 21 at the Huntingdale Gold Club, Windsor Ave, South Oakleigh. Awards for Best First Year (Field, Boundary, Goal), Most Improved (Field, Boundary, Goal) and Golden Whistle Award, together with Umpires Association Awards, will be announced. The cost of these functions are included in your membership fees.

Please make sure you respond this weekend to https://form.jotform.co/62150823986865 for attendance at our SFLUA Awards Night or we may not be able to accommodate you on the night as this is a catered event. It is expected that all Umpires attend this function, whether you think that you will be umpiring a Grand Final or not.

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Despite his side going down to Ashwood in Saturday’s Qualifying Final, Hidgcock received two votes from each member of

the SFNL Radio team to claim this week’s award. While others floated in and out of

the game, Hidgcock was super consistent through all four quarters, working hard on the ball and finding plenty of it. He toiled hard all afternoon and did the

basics right, exactly the sort of player you need in a big final.

Congratulations, Brett!

BRETT HIDGCOCK

DOVETON EAGLES

Having played almost every game in his debut season in the competition, Sam Walters’ five-goal haul against

Dingley showed just how far he’s come. Walters has been solid all

season and this stellar performance has earned him the last nomination for the Leader Shooting Star Award.

Congratulations, Sam!
