Nash FM: Under The Hood “We conducted extensive market research and considered multiple options,” Cumulus EVP/Co-COO John Dickey tells Country Aircheck. “Opportunity for Country is different today given the explosive growth of the format and its wider appeal.” And that opportunity was a big part of the rationale behind flipping recently acquired WRXP/New York to Country, using the Nash FM 94.7 brand (Breaking News 1/21). P A G E T H R E E P I Cthan 7.5 million in 2011. And that, of course, doesn’t include WNSH, which will surely top one million listeners. (And, is two million really out of the question?) That’s a heckuva megaphone for the brand. Cumulus also has the potential to grow the audience even larger should it choose to flip any of its other properties to support that national Nash platform. Cumulus owns stations in a number of markets where there is no Country outlet in the cluster. That includes five cities in the Top 25 markets; four in 26-50; six in 51-100; three in 101-150; and four in 151-200. With the number of media assets Cumulus is devoting to Country, it certainly isn’t a stretch to think they may add some new Country stations to the Nash-FM brand.

NYCountry: Executive Thoughts • “Having a full-signal Country station in the heart of New York City, the media capital of the world, is huge,”

says Sony/Nashville Chairman/CEO Gary Overton. “Our music can now be heard 24/7 by the millions of radio listeners in New York. This in turn will help increase record sales in one of our best sales cities. It will also help media awareness and coverage of our artists. Radio stations in New York are not cheap, so I think this shows that Cumulus

is definitely committed to the Country format.”  • “I love it,” says UMG/Nashville Chairman Mike Dungan, who recounts a story of a New York-area Keith Urban show from a few years back. Unlike other sold-out shows on the tour, the Big Apple audience was older and a bit more sedate. “We just hadn’t done as well gaining new, younger fans in that market since WYNY left years earlier.”  • “We’re looking at a dramatically different landscape from what it was in 1996,” says Big Machine Label Group President/CEO Scott

Borchetta. “Most of the other formats have imploded and there are only two that are ubiquitous – Top 40 and Country. Everything else splintered. So we have lots of strength and momentum to bring to the marketplace. Plus, we have a younger-skewed target than we did 15 years ago. The timing is excellent, but we have to show patience, as well. Stations in Boston and Philly really stayed with it and it’s paying huge dividends. “ (Ed. Note: Greater Media’s WKLB/Boston increased its market rank among persons 25-54 from No. 5 to No. 2 year-to-year between Dec. ‘11 to Dec. 12. Beasley’s WXTU/Philadelphia also grew during that time, improving its persons 25-54 rank from No. 9 to No. 5.)

OFF THE RECORD : C H R I s J A n s O nBigger Picture’s Chris Janson puts an

industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to KJFF/Farmington, MO. That station stayed on the radio in my Mom’s truck all the time. First time I heard myself on the radio was on J98. I used to make home recordings of myself doing cover tunes. I had some really close friends at the station that would play them on-air. When I used to

hear them, never would I have thought, in a million years, that my original songs would ever be on the radio!I’ll never forget my time I spent hanging around Haggard, Hank and Skynyrd … pretty priceless!I enjoy all of my regional radio reps. They’re great and have my best interest at heart, even when it comes to picking places to eat! ‘I have to say … I’m pretty easy though.’I can’t walk out of a truck stop without buying a bottle of Mountain Dew. The last purchase I made from Skymall … never really bought anything from there. And never really thought about it because I’m super tight with money. I have a hard time coming off of it.There¹s no place like home, but if I had to be stuck somewhere it’d be Adel, GA. There’s nothing to do but hunt, go to the hunting store and drive my truck around. When there¹s downtime I use my favorite Apps: Primo’s Wind Checker, eBay and Craigslist Mobile. The best advice I’ve ever received came from Keith Stegall and my wife, Kelly. They both told me, “Just go be you.” And that’s exactly what I do!

Listening, Jazz and Classical. The signal changed hands two more times during the 1960s, the last being Family Radio, which operated it as a religious station under the call letters WFME until its sale to Cumulus last October for $40 million. Presently, the station is a 23.5kW Class B located in Newark at 679 feet above average terrain offering local-grade coverage for most of the NYC PPM metro. New York’s first relationship with Country radio was WJRZ-FM (1965-71). The storied WHN-AM (1973-87), WKHK-FM (1980-84) and WYNY-FM (1987-96) followed. The final effort came from Big City Radio (1996-2002) via trimulcast on three smaller FM suburban stations. Within two years of its launch, that arrangement became a quad-cast; one of those stations even acquired the old WYNY call letters.

Chart Chat Congrats to Randy Houser, Carson James, Chris Loss and the whole Stoney Creek promotion team on scoring this week’s No. 1 single with Houser’s “How Country Feels.” The song is the first chart-topper of his career, and the first single from his new album, which shares the title.

Strait: Riding In, Then Off George Strait kicked off The Cowboy Rides Away Tour in Lubbock, TX Friday (1/18) to a 15,000-strong and emotional crowd. Local KLLL PD Jeff Scott and KQBR PD Alyssa Rodriguez help us get the story “Strait.” “Here For A Good Time” was the first of the night’s 29 Strait staples, all with heavy doses of nostalgia. “He talked more and told a lot of stories from early on,” Scott says. “He did songs I’d never heard him do, too. ‘Blame It On Mexico,’ for example.” “He covered Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues,” adds Rodriguez. “He talked a lot about his history with Lubbock.”

Beyond the bittersweet atmosphere, some VIP fans experienced “The King’s Tavern,” a pre-show reception featuring Strait memorabilia. Strait also introduced U.S. Marine Corps E-3/Lance Corporal Christopher Allen, awarding him with keys to a new home

through the Military Warriors Support Foundation’s Homes 4 Wounded Heroes program. Twenty homes will be given away at upcoming shows. The concert wrapped with “The Cowboy Rides Away,” leaving many in tears. “People seemed heartbroken,” Rodriguez says. Scott adds, “It was just a very emotional night.”

MY TUnEs: MUsIC THAT sHAPED MY LIFECumulus Media Networks Today’s

Best Country and Real Country PD Gary Reynolds discusses his most influential artists, songs, albums and concerts:1. Elvis Presley, Tulsa, OK, 1973: I was fortunate enough to see him in the Aloha From Hawaii era. And he was great. The best concert I’ve ever been to. No one was a better showman than Elvis was and I remember how impressive his entourage was ... the Stamps Quartet as background

singers, the band behind him, every little detail was fantastic.2. Three Dog Night, Tulsa, OK, 1971: My first concert. That ain’t the way to have fun, son! The opening act was a singer named Gayle McCormick. Gayle was the lead singer of the group Smith, who had a hit with “Baby It’s You.” She even sang backgrounds on a couple of the Three Dog Night songs they did live. This was in the Three Dog Night heyday, just after “Joy To The World” had been a big hit.3. Merle Haggard, Billy Bob’s Texas: This was in the early 2000s and I had never seen Merle live before and he was spot-on. His voice was smooth as silk even at his advanced age. The Strangers were masterful and didn’t miss a note. A magical show.4. Keith Urban, Golden Road: My favorite album of the past 15 years.5. Miranda Lambert/The House That Built Me: Alex Valentine, who worked for Columbia when Miranda first recorded that song, made me leave my office to go out in his car while he drove around and played it for me. It blew me away, mostly because I was in the process of going through my childhood home at that time after my mom had just passed away.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Eminem’s The Slim Shady LP.• An artist you just don’t get: Bob Dylan.• One album or song in your collection you’d rather not admit you love: Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill.• An obscure song everyone should listen to right now: On Reba’s Duets album she does a song with Faith Hill called “Sleeping With The Telephone.” It’s a great song that got lost in the shuffle. Reba was switching labels and Faith had another project going at the time. This song was/is better than anything either of them had done in the past couple of years. It would still work today.

In addition to registering Nash-related domains for every FM frequency, trademark applications have recently been filed for the words Nash, Nash Country, Nash FM, Nash TV, Nash Awards, Nash Magazine, Nash Interactive and more. Goods and services are cited as “Radio and television broadcasting services; conducting award ceremonies; printed publications, namely, entertainment magazines; providing online publications in the nature of entertainment magazines; providing a website featuring online radio broadcasting, online television broadcasting, and entertainment news, events and information.” Dickey was mum on what role New York’s Nash FM 94.7 will play as a possible flagship to the nationwide brand initiatives, only saying, “stay tuned.”

C H E C K O U TGary Allan Set You Free (MCA) “I think it was the most creative team I’ve been with,” Allan says of the first single “Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain),” co-written with Matt Warren and Hilary Lindsay (“Jesus, Take The Wheel”). Working again with producers Mark Wright and Jay Joyce, Allan helped produce, as well as handle lead guitar

responsibilities on some of the album’s 12 tracks.

Tim McGraw Tim McGraw & Friends (Curb) The compilation of collaborations will be released through McGraw’s former record label, Curb, just a few weeks before his Big Machine debut, Two Lanes Of Freedom hits stores. Highlights include the single “Twisted” with Colt Ford, “Sail On” with Lionel Richie and “Me And Tennesse” with Gwyneth Paltrow.

Like many in the industry, that’s exactly what we did upon hearing Friday night (1/18) that a new format would arrive on inauguration day. After the weekend’s “Wheel of Formats” stunting, a lengthy and highly produced imaging piece kicked off Nash FM Monday at 9:47am ET, featuring hooks of

The initial launch piece that was New York-centric was used as a legal ID for the remainder of Monday, and is almost the sole production piece centering on the city’s identity. Imaging pieces were played after every two songs and included the following:(v/o) “This is America’s Country Station, The New Nash FM 94-7;” (v/o) “America’s Country Station! (jx) Nash Fm 94-7;” (v/o) “America’s Country Station, (artist drop) We’re The Zac Brown Band! It is woven into voice-over pieces for the most part, but also used as a stand-alone production piece too. Nash FM’s website and stream found here.

famous songs serenading New York, including Frank Sinatra’s iconic “New York, New York” and Jay-Z’s recent “Empire State of Mind” featuring Alicia Keyes. New York icons including the Rockettes, New York Giants, the Empire State Building and the Yankees all received mentions via audio drops leading into the station’s first song, Randy Houser’s “How Country Feels,” followed by Alan Jackson’s “Gone Country.” A look at Nash FM’s first 14 hours of music on Mediabase shows a fairly even balance of 54.3% current/recurrent songs to 45.7% gold. In the 1pm hour, the 16 songs were distributed as follows: eight gold, four recurrents and 4 currents. Of the four currents, two are heavies, one medium and one light. Nash is playing a total of 19 currents. Additionally, the musical era on Nash FM skews 2010-2012, with 56% of Monday’s titles from that three-year period, versus 37% from 2000-2009. Another 6% of its titles were 1987-99. That mix is nearly identical to sister stations WNNF/Cincinnati, WSM-FM/Nashville and KPLX/Dallas, which are also in the 55-57% range, and a contrast to the company’s WFMS/Indianapolis, KUBL/Salt Lake City or WKDF/Nashville, whose 2010-2012 music library leans into the mid-upper 60% range. Nash FM did feature four ‘90s era songs in its first hour of music; as the day wore on, all but four hours contained at least one ‘90s tune. Because the station is commercial-free right now, Nash FM is music intensive, averaging at least 15 songs per hour Monday. Though only one day old, it appears Nash FM’s heavies are the usual suspects: Brad Paisley’s “Southern Comfort Zone,” Jason Aldean’s “The Only Way I Know,” Zac Brown Band’s “Goodbye In Her Eyes” and Taylor Swift’s “Begin Again.” Kix Brooks’ “Moonshine Road” was also heavy, playing four times Monday. Heavy currents are turning every three hours. CAC
