The official newsletter publication for the parish of Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church of San Diego

FROM THE DESK OF FATHER ANDREWMy Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The Christmas Season is upon us and the celebration of the Nativity

of our Lord and Savior is at hand. What an awesome mystery we

recognize that God becomes Incarnate, takes on flesh and dwells among

His people; His creation. He does so because He truly loves us. From Holy

Scripture (John 15:12; II Cor. 13:11; I John 4:8) we are told that God is love

and He “proves” that fact by sending His Only Begotten Son to be born of the Holy Spirit

in the simplicity of a manger: For God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son,

that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).

From the first chapter of Matthew verse eighteen we read: Now the birth of Jesus Christ

took place in this way… The Biblical Greek word for birth is γέννησις or genesis which

translates beginning. The first book of the Old Testament is called Genesis or Η Γέννησις:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth… With this very important

passage we recognize and understand that God created and gave beginning to His

creation. However, with the Fall of Adam God’s beginning was corrupted and Adam’s

reign in Paradise came to an end. Thus, with the birth of Jesus Christ creation (humanity)

begins anew or has the opportunity to (continually) start over. God knew and it became

apparent that man could not save himself and so at the appropriate time He sent His Son

to bridge the gap between the created and the Creator; between man and God.

No other man, no other philosopher, no other person, no other human being had

or has the power and authority to save us. No one throughout all of history could

offer eternal life except He who was born of a Virgin through the Holy Spirit. He who is

not only called Christ but He who is also called Emmanuel, which means God with us;

who is at the same time both human and Divine, alone can offer eternal life is He who

was born in a cave and grants unto us a new beginning.

Our Incarnate and Great God could have appeared without human cooperation but

then it would seem like He had forced Himself upon us and circumvent our free

will. Instead, like the Virgin Mary, He asks and waits for our cooperation freely given from

(hopefully) love. Again, from the book of Genesis we read God created man in His image

and likeness. To be made in God’s image and likeness is to have the ability to love as God

loves, and to be free like God is free. God gave the Virgin the freedom to say no way to

the angel’s message, but instead she chose to say Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord;

let it be according to Your word. Thus, out of love the Virgin Mary exercised her free will

2 THE SHEPHERD • DECEMBER 2012 • SAINT SPYRIDON GREEK OR THODOX CHURCH OF SAN DIEGO

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE PARISH COUNCIL

Christ is Born! Glorify Him!

Where did 2012 go? I can’t believe it is December already. It is hard for me to think that in a few short weeks we will be exchanging this beautiful greeting yet again with one another as we celebrate our Savior’s birth. This year I ask all of you to please remember the true meaning of Christmas. Every year it seems harder and harder as so many things get in the way. Please make a point to attend the extra services offered during this Holy Season (please see the calendar in this month’s Shepherd).

As an active member of the Stewardship Committee for the past 4 years I want to thank Father Andrew for the beautiful article in November’s monthly newsletter. By now you have all received your 2013 pledge card and I am asking you to prayerfully consider your stewardship giving for 2013. Please remember my dear brothers and sisters in Christ as Father Andrew reminded us in the November newsletter, stewardship giving, like attending the Divine Liturgy, is not an option. It is our sacred obligation freely given to Christ and His Church here on earth. Please turn this card in before the end of the 2012 year and remember your offering should be given throughout the entire year as your time and talents are given the whole year to the Church.

As I have done so many times in past President’s messages I want to once again take this opportunity to praise another parishioner who stepped up to volunteer her services when they were needed. This time I am talking about Diane Leffas-Lopes. Diane took stock of her life and realized it was time

to get more involved in her Church. Diane decided to run for the Parish Council as she wanted to take her turn serving this valuable ministry. Thank you so much Diane! For everyone else please note December 1st is the last date to submit your nomination form for the 2013 parish council.

I want to take this time to update you on the Southern California GOYA Epiphany Retreat hosted by St. Spyridon and Sts. Constantine and Helen on January 5-6, 2013. The retreat theme is: You were Baptized – now what? 16 When He had been

baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold,

the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God

descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a

voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom

I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3: 16-17) What meaning does the annual repetition of Epiphany have for our faith and for our Christian life? The retreat master is Father Chris Kerhulas former Youth Director for the Metropolis of Chicago and priest of St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago from 1981 – 2010. Parents, Father Chris will inspire your kids and touch them in a way they can relate to and they will walk away grateful to have attended. The retreat cost is $50 which includes Saturday activities at St. Spyridon (lunch, dinner, and all retreat activities), Cross Dive & Epiphany Luncheon Celebration on Sunday at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina, Epiphany weekend shirt, and for those participating in the dive, bus transportation from St. Spyridon to the hotel following the Divine Liturgy. A big thank you to the St. Spyridon Parish Council, the Anthousa Chapter of Philoptochos, the AHEPA Chapter 223, the St.

and accepted the challenge to bring forth from her womb the

Savior of the world.

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, may we too, out of love,

exercise our free will to do the many things Christ has

asked us and called us to do. He asks us to love one another;

to care for each other; to feed the poor and clothe the naked;

to be compassionate and merciful as our Heavenly Father is

compassionate and merciful; to be humble, kind and generous,

to forgive as God forgives and the list goes on. Thus, as am I

reminded at this time I encourage you to seize the opportunity

and to use the Nativity season as it was intended, to mark a

new beginning in our lives and to follow the example of Christ;

and to love, to care for, to be merciful and compassionate,

to be more humble, kind and generous and to forgive one

another and all of God’s people. Christ is Born, Glorify Him! (for

a new beginning).

LIBRARY & BOOKSTORE

Dear Friends of the Choir,

We wish Fr. Andrew belated “Hronia Polla” for his name day. May he and his family always enjoy good health and all of God’s blessings.

I had the privilege of attending the 75th anniversary of the As-sumption of the Virgin Mary church in Long Beach a few weeks ago. I was asked to sing at the banquet the night before, direct the choir, and celebrate the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy with our Metropolitan Gerasimos. It was a beautiful occasion and we wish their parish all the best and continued success.

Have you been listening to our wonderful youth choir sing with us on Sundays? They are doing such a great job learning music at rehearsals each Sunday. It is such a treat to be working with this great group of dedicated kids.

The senior choir is working to perfect the new musical ar-rangements of Dr. Tikey Zes during the Divine Liturgy. We hope you enjoy listening and will join us from the pews! It is always good to challenge ourselves and bring different com-posers into our Liturgical music. Of course we will continue to do Desby and other familiar pieces all of you know.

We look forward to our Metropolitan Gerasimos’ visit to cele-brate Liturgy and the name day of our beloved St. Spyridon and parish. I hope all of you will be with us.

The choir and I wish you and your families a blessed holiday sea-son. Let us all rejoice in the birth of our Lord Jesus!

In His Service

Katherine Meck, Choir Master

Dear Seniors,

Please join us at our Annual Christmas party on December 11th at 11am. We will be celebrating the memory of Spyro Mazis. He is remembered as we also celebrate our own church’s Name Day in the month of December.

Mrs. Mary Mazis will be sponsoring the luncheon in his honor, and we hope to see you all there. In order to have an accurate number of who might attend, please RSVP to Cynthia Samarkos at (619) 582-4109 or at [email protected].

We will be spreading holiday cheer with Christmas carols and decorations so please join us!

New members are always welcome! This is a perfect time to join and be a member for all of 2013! If you have any questions please call me at (619) 855-2991.

With Love, Sophia Mellos

Our study of the Gospel according to St. Mark has been inspiring and challenging at the same time. St. Mark forces us to look at ourselves and ask, “Are we truly living God’s word?” This is something that we all strive for, but the world certainly works against us. Our Lord encourages however, to persevere and not lose faith, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. We are grateful for God’s mercy and love!

Women of the Word wishes to thank Fr. Andrew for joining us for one of our November sessions to help us answer many of our difficult questions from the chapters studied thus far. We are grateful to him for spending that time with us!

We meet every Wednesday morning at 10:30 am, in the Education Building, unless otherwise posted. It is never too late to join; please come by and visit us! For more information, please contact Soula De La Riva at 760-521-0471 or at [email protected]. We pray that you will be our next new member!

Wishing each of you a Blessed Advent and a joyous Nativity Season!

+ With Love in Christ,

The Women of the Word Bible Study Group

“CHRISTMAS IN THE BOOKSTORE”

SUNDAY SCHOOL GREEK SCHOOL

A.H.E.P.A. NEWS

Dear Sunday School Parents,

This is a wonderfully busy time of the year for all us and Sunday School is no exception. Please remember that on December 2nd we will conduct the dress rehearsal for the Christmas pageant and the pageant will be held after the Divine Liturgy on December 9th. A Christmas celebration for our students will be held in the fellowship hall thereafter. The last day of the St. Nicholas holiday food drive will be December 16th; keep those non-perishables coming! Our winter break will be from December 30th to January 6th; class will resume on January 13th. On behalf of our teachers and myself, we wish you and your families a safe and blessed Christmas.

In His Service,

Michelle Capetanakis Director, Sunday School

Students and teachers join together to wish each and every one of you “Merry Christmas” and “a healthy and peaceful New Year”.

We hope you will enjoy the following poem which is very meaningful and appropriate for the Christmas season.

Respectfully,

As a result of their generosity 100% of luncheon proceeds will ben-efit the chapters many & diverse ministries. May God bless you for your love and devotion.

The ladies prepared special meals for the Wounded Warriors from the Republic of Georgia. We called on them for a visit after the luncheon, the men were deeply appreciative and we saw them smile and laugh during dinner. At the beginning of their meal they lifted their glasses and made the following heartfelt toast, “To all the women of Philoptochos and the Greek People of San Diego, which always remember us from Georgia.” May God speed the healing of these brave and selfless men.

In conjunction with the 75th Anniversary of the Anthousa Chap-ter of Philoptochos, the committee is ambitiously producing The 75th Anniversary Commemorative Cookbook and The 75th Anniversary Commemorative DVD. We NEED your help in the collection of favorite recipes, photos, and mementos. Our goal is to have every family represented within both of these projects. Visit anthousa.org to submit your recipes. Please submit photos of Philoptochos past presidents, members, gatherings, and chari-ties that chronicle our 75 years of philanthropy to: Harriet Kou-naves at [email protected] or Honey Hyde at [email protected].

Additionally a photo shoot is scheduled on Sunday, January 20th for: all past presidents, past and current board members who have lovingly served the chapter. This is a milestone celebra-tion for the chapter, an opportunity to honor the memory of our moms, yiayias, theas, nounas, family, and friends. Pull out the old box of photos and recipes and share them with the committee as we try to assemble the 75 years. No family left behind!

STEWARDSHIP CHALLENGE 2012

Don’t forget to “step up” to the stewardship challenge. A concerted effort is being made by the parish to meet the honorable goal of covering our 2012 operating ex-penses using stewardship dollars ONLY. The challenge is asking each and every steward to add $75 to their 2012 stewardship commitment made at the beginning of 2012. Please join hands with the over 45 individuals & families who have already given “up and above” their 2012 pledged amount. The Stewardship Committee thanks them and you in advance.

Also please check the pledge you made at the begin-ning of the 2012 Calendar year to make sure you are on track to fulfill the pledged amount.

Spyridon Dance and Choral School and the St. Spyridon Choir who ALL made generous donations to ensure the success of this event. These wonderful ministries stepped up when asked which in turn will make this a memorable and amazing retreat not only for our youth and the youth of Sts. Constantine and Helen but for all Orthodox Youth in Southern California who chose to participate. In order to properly prepare and have all the needed supplies for the retreat the last day to register your son or daughter will be Sunday, December 23rd. Please don’t let your children miss this wonderful opportunity.

Please note the Divine Liturgy will begin at 9 am on January 6th NOT 10 am in order to accommodate all that will be taking place on this special day. The 35th annual St. Spyridon Cross Dive & Epiphany Luncheon celebration on January 6, 2013 will be an unforgettable experience in the life of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in San Diego. I encourage you ALL to mail in your check today to the Church office as this event, as it has done the past 3 years, will sell out quickly. The cost will be the same as last year, $40 for adults and $20 for children under 12 and payment must be received in the Church office no later than

Wednesday, January 2, 2013. I am thrilled to announce the 2013 Leon Balaban awardees will be Michael and Maria Platis. This selfless couple has worked for the Church for many years in different capacities and the parish council unanimously agreed we must honor them at the Sunday, January 6th Epiphany luncheon. With many visiting clergy and laity this year the Epiphany weekend celebration promises to be a historical event in the life of our parish.

Of course, first we MUST celebrate December and all this Holy month has to offer. Please know that our GOYANS will be renting out the Church parking lot on December 7th and 8th to those who will be visiting the annual Christmas Parade of lights at the Prado. As you all know, this yearly event in San Diego brings thousands of San Diegans who drive right by our Church. All monies earned from this endeavor will go towards St. Spyridon GOYA’s activities and ministries for 2013. This will

be a full weekend for our Youth as the Annual Church Christmas pageant will take place on Sunday, December 9th immediately following the Divine Liturgy (remember our parish council elections are also on December 9th but not too worry as you can vote after or before the pageant).

Our Feast Day is the next milestone on December 11th with Great Vespers beginning at 7 pm; Orthros the following day (December 12th) at 9am and the Divine Liturgy for St. Spyridon the Wonderworker following at 10am. Please plan on attending so we can worship as one Church family for OUR Beloved Patron Saint. There will be a complimentary luncheon to celebrate our Feast Day immediately following the Divine Liturgy on December 12th. All are encouraged to attend (please see information in this month’s newsletter).

Of course, on Monday, December 24th beginning at 7 pm we will celebrate the Vesperal Divine Liturgy for the Nativity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. What a beautiful and meaningful Christmas Liturgy we will have after participating in the Holy Advent Fast for the past 40 days. I look forward to wishing each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas on this Holy Day.

Please know that I am praying for all of you during this beautiful season of the Holy Nativity. I look forward to worshipping with you and your families in Church on Sunday mornings.

In Christ’s holy name,

WHAT IT IS THE SAINT SPYRIDON / GEORGE B. AND ROSE

PAPANICOLAOU SCHOLARSHIP?

The George and Rose Papanicolaou Scholarship Fund was started by George Papanicolaou, a long time resident of Escondido. The purpose of this scholarship was to provide financial support to a deserving high school graduate, whose family is a member of the St.Spyridon community.

Both George and Rose were members of St. Spyridon since the early 1940’s and expressed their wish to have a portion of their estate left to the young Greek people of the St. Spyridon community.

Beginning in 1984, the fund has awarded sixty-eight (68) scholarships, amounting to over thirty-eight thousand dollars, to the youth of our community.

In our effort to provide educational assistance through the scholarship fund, we recognize that our ability to assist is increased with the aid of our community.

If anyone would like to make a donation as well, it is tax deductible. We appreciate all your continued support for the youth of our community.
