DAROO AWARDS A WINNER A testament to the fact that you can start anything at any age, Kerry O‟Keeffe kept the audience in stitches at Friday night‟s 12th annual Daroo Awards. Held at the Eat Your Greens Function Centre at Eugowra, over 100 guests and award entrants were treated to the talents of our own Nerida Cuddy upon arrival and a well orchestrated awards ceremony throughout the night. Kerry O‟Keeffe, former test cricketer and current cricket commentator, was hilarious and candid about his history, entertaining the crowd with off the cuff remarks and stories from his past. Organised by the Cabonne Daroo Business Awards Committee, chaired by Bruce Buchanan of Business Enterprise Centre in Orange, the night was well planned and excellently executed. Committee Secretary Amber Pacey, who has moved on from her role at Cabonne Council was honoured on the evening for the amount of work and effort she contributed to the event throughout the last two years. Canowindra again showed our strength in business excellence by winning five out of 12 categories. CARWASH FOR MONTANA BOUND STUDENTS Twelve local high school students are planning a carwash on Saturday 12 November at Burn's Service Station in Canowindra to earn money for their upcoming trip to Montana USA next Winter 2012. To date the students have raised funds from firewood raffles, selling foods at the Canowin-dra and Eugowra Shows and the Gooloogong Spring Fair. The twelve students, including CHSers Tim Wythes, Curtis Hughes, Madison Vitnell, Makk and Theika McNaught, and Melissa Johnson will use the money for bus transportation, for a host family appreciation dinner, and for fees into various parks once in Big Timber, Montana. The carwash will be Saturday 12 November from 8:30am to 1pm. Costs will be $10 for a wash, and $20 for a wash and vacuum. CHANGE OF VISITING HOURS After a recent review, visiting hours to the general wards at the Canowindra Soldiers Memorial Hospital will now be 10am to 9pm. This is a three month trial. It is hoped that extending these hours will improve the quality of the patient‟s admission. Visiting hours for aged care and palliative care are open as usual. CABONNE TO ABOLISH WARDS Cabonne Council will seek approval from the State Government to abolish wards within the Shire. At an extraordinary meeting Tuesday 7 November 2011, the Council resolved to apply to Local Government Minister Don Page to do away with the wards system when Council elections are held in September next year. The Shire currently has six wards, each represented by two Councillors, but Mayor Bob Dowling said the abolition of wards would enable all residents to vote for the candidates they believe would best represent them. Cr Dowling said the move would be a positive step towards overcoming parochialism and would help to attract more and better candidates at the next Local Government elections. “Initially I was apprehensive, but after talking to Mayors of nearby Councils that have abolished wards, I‟m confident this move won‟t adversely affect representation for smaller areas within the Shire,” Cr Dowling said. “In all cases, there has been a spread of Councillors elected from across their areas, including small localities.” Cr Dowling said the proposal had been widely advertised, as well as being discussed at a number of community consultation meetings during the past six weeks. In addition to the advertising and widespread media coverage, flyers stating the cases for and against the retention of wards were placed at village post offices, libraries and a number of businesses. At the end of the advertising period the Council received seven submissions, four of which were opposed to the move. “All seven submissions will be presented to the Minister along with the Council‟s application to do away with wards,” the Mayor said. Recent amendments to the Local Government Act enabled Council to abolish wards and reduce the number of Councillors without a Constitutional Referendum, however Cabonne will retain the existing number of 12 Councillors. The Mayor said the move should ensure that all Councillors represented the entire Shire not just the area where they were elected. “It would give all residents the opportunity to vote for people they believe would best represent them without being constrained by ward boundaries,” he said. “Councillors would be more likely to have a more strategic approach and think more broadly about issues, as well as being less likely to be accused of bias.” Cr Dowling said the proposal would remove any confusion about ward boundaries, as well as cutting election costs with only one electoral roll and one ballot paper needed. Population shifts within the Shire would have made it difficult to retain wards which maintained local representation. Although it would have been possible to have ward boundaries which satisfied the Local Government Act, they could have resulted in many residents having little affinity to the areas in which they could be included. “You could have had people living on the out-skirts of some villages voting for people from other areas,” Cr Dowling. “For example people on the outskirts of Cudal could have been voting for candidates from Manildra, Cumnock and Yeoval if wards were maintained, while those on the outskirts of Cargo could have been voting for candidates in Canowindra but not those from Cargo.”

GREEN GOLD EXHIBITION Open all weekend with the official opening of the Green Gold Exhibition will be on Saturday afternoon 12 November. Potato Gnocchi 750g Sebago potatoes 200g plain flour, plus a little extra; Salt

Peel & dice potatoes and cook in salted water for 15-20 minutes until tender. Drain & set aside to cool. Mash well, add salt, use stick blender until finely mixed. Add potato to flour & knead together, use extra flour if dough is sticky, don’t allow to become too dry. Cut dough into 4, roll out until 2cm diameter & cut 1.5cm rounds. Using a dinner fork, make indentations on one side to allow sauce to cling. Bring a large pot of water to the boil & add ¼ of the gnocchi, they will be cooked 10 seconds after they have risen to the surface. Drain well & top with your favourite pasta sauce.

AQUA THERAPY CLASSES TO START SOON!!! For all those people who want to have fun and improve their fitness, Spring is here and Summer just around the corner which means the start of aqua therapy classes. Exercises in the water are easier to do and less stressful on the joints. You do not need to be able to swim to take part in the aqua therapy classes. The hour long session involves walking in the water, specific exercises for each joint, aerobic exercises and cool down stretches. “The aqua therapy classes over the past number of years have been a lot of fun, and participants felt their fitness and energy levels improved” says Physiotherapy Aide Angela Ellis. “There is increasing evidence about the benefits of physical activity. Exercising regularly reduces the risk of heart disease and strokes, improves muscle strength and balance, and helps with weight control, diabetes and high blood pressure. And above all, it makes you feel good. These classes are a good way to start or to provide variety, if you already exercise regularly,” says Angela. The aqua therapy classes will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 9am to 10am from 21 November. The classes are for adult men and women, and all newcomers are welcome to attend. The cost is $2.30 for pool entry or $96.00 for a single season ticket or $80.00 for pensioner single season ticket. SWIMMING CLUB The warmer week has encouraged more swimmers to turn up to Swimming Club and most of them must have been eating their veggies as PBs were obliterated across the strokes. In the „Spoon‟ Samuel Brand took 11 seconds off his PB while Sam Coady smashed his best by 9 seconds. Gabby Clements, Patrick Hickman and Max Wensley took 5 seconds off their best closely followed by Millie Balcomb and Xavier Lynch with 4 second improve-ments. However the Spoon went to Angus Fisher who dropped his time by 2 seconds in the semi and then another second in the Final as he held off a fast finishing Ellis Hawker in Lane 5. Big improvers in the 66m freestyle were Lara Hawker who smashed her time by 29 seconds while Millie Balcomb and Finbar Smyth lowered their times by 18 seconds. In the relay Lane 1 won ahead of a quick finishing lane six: swimmers in Lane 1 were Alex Clout, Molly Grant, Max Wensley, Meg Austin, Caitlin Brand, Sienna O‟Dea, Tori McKay and Samuel Brand. Swimmers try to be ready for roll call at 5:45pm so swimming can start as close to 6pm as possible.

SENIOR CRICKET Canowindra travelled to Grenfell on Saturday and came home victorious, cruising to a six wicket win. With skipper Nick Guthrie returning to the team Canowindra was bound to lose the toss and that‟s what happened. Grenfell chose to bat and lost a wicket in the second over of the game off the bowling of Brendan Traves. Nick Guthrie picked up the next wicket after some tight bowling and the score was 2/21 off 9 overs. Traves and Guthrie then picked up the third and fourth wickets in quick succession and the home side was struggling at 4/39. Canowindra continued to bowl well with Alex Myers, Pete Guthrie and Nick Traves all con-tributing in the middle session, however failed to take regular wickets. Grenfell was able to build small partnerships which were enough to post a solid total of 151 after their 40 overs. Brendan Traves finished with 3/34 off 11 overs. In reply Canowindra got off to a close to perfect start with Mark Norman and Pete Guthrie scoring freely until Norman (16) was caught in the eighteenth over with the score at 70. Matt Beaton (7) lost his wicket before drinks and Pete Guthrie (68) went soon after the break with the score at 3/99. Nick Guthrie (1) came and went bringing Shaun Craven to the crease. Brendan Traves (39no) and Craven (19no) found the gaps in the field with ease and took Canowindra past the Grenfell total with 6 overs to spare. A solid batting performance by Canowindra‟s top order was the key to the victory. Next week Canowindra are at home and can hope-fully make it two in a row.
