One Hundred Cool Things to Do This Summer in Burke County

Looking for enjoyable things to do this summer? Burke County has a hundred of them.

The activities will be revealed each morning on Facebook, Twitter, the county’s tourism website, and on flyers available at the Burke County Visitors Center.

A few examples of the activities are: kayaking the Johns River, hiking Shortoff Mountain, bird watching on the NC Birding Trail, attending the outdoor drama From This Day Forward, swimming at Lake James State Park, hiking to a waterfall at South Mountains State Park and enjoying the splash pad at Martha’s Park in downtown Morganton.

“People asked me, ‘Can you really find 100 things to do in Burke County?’ Actually, it was pretty easy,” said tourism director Ed Phillips.

“We have several small towns, a thriving music scene, lots of arts and crafts, superb dining, the Blue Ridge Parkway, two state parks, and great fishing and water sports.”

“ We’re tr ying to give people something they will look forward to seeing every day in social media feeds and on our website and in our Visitors Center. Each day a new flyer will be posted that has the same format. It includes a paragraph on the activity, along with a phone

number, website, hours, and a color photo.” Phillips said. “And we will keep a running list for people who wish to pursue other activities.”

To sum it all up, Phillip said Burke County has everything from A (apple picking) to Z (zip-lining).

For more info about Fun Up-dated Daily, call the visitors center at 888-462-2921, or go online to: www.DiscoverBurkeCounty.com.

Beech Mountain is an ideal summer getaway for families. It blends the amenities and lodging of a ski resort town with miles and miles of town-maintained hiking and biking trails.

On weekends (Friday through Sunday) Beech Mountain Resort operates its downhill mountain biking park, complete with lift access for both riders and their bikes. The resort also offers disc golf and scenic chairlift rides to the summit, where an observation deck awaits.

Two special weekends add to the festivities. The town’s Emerald Outback trail park holds its grand re-opening the weekend of June 5-7 with mountain biking rides, family hikes, a bonfire, clinics, contests and demos. The weekend of June 19-21 is the Cool 5 Race Weekend, featuring a five-mile run, a 1.5-mile fun run, a family walk-and-wag for pets, and a popsicle relay. A Taste of Beech also takes place that weekend.

Getting involved in Family Fun Month is easy. A schedule of events is available at www.FamilyFunMonth.com. Parents and grandparents can go to the site, select the days with their favorite activities, then choose from two lodging packages.

Tap Into NC Ingredients at State of Origin Beer Fest

After a successful debut last year, the State of Origin Beer Festival returns June 13 with

an increased emphasis on North Carolina ingredients.

All participating craft breweries are required to be based in North Carolina and serve beers derived from ingredients sourced within the state’s borders. The festival takes place from 1:30-7:30pm on the courthouse square in downtown Morganton.

“We look for the majority of ingredients to be from North Caro-lina and every year we will become more stringent on that,” says festival organizer David Bennett of Fonta Flora Brewery. “The great thing is the breweries are following suit and using this as a challenge to create beers they have not done before. Many of these beers are one-off creations that once they’re gone, they’re gone. It’s definitely limited and exclusive in nature.”

Locally-sourced ingredients will include staples like malts, hops and

water, along with unique items like carrots, kiwis, wildflower honey and beets. Fonta Flora has even been known to brew batches from dates and dandelions.

“It’s all over the map,” Bennett says. “The breweries really put a lot of time, money and effort into brewing these special beers.”

The l i s t o f 25 par t ic ipat ing breweries includes: Appalachian M o u n t a i n B r e w e r y o f B o o n e , Birdsong Brewer y of Charlotte, Ful lsteam Brewer y of Durham, Highland Brewing Co. of Asheville, Triple C Brewing of Charlotte, Trophy Brewing of Raleigh and Asheville’s Wicked Weed Brewing.

M o r g a n t o n b r e w e r i e s a r e Catawba Brewing Company and Fonta Flora, which recently won a gold medal for its Irish table stout at the Great American Beer Festival in Colorado.

Live music will be provided by acclaimed bluegrass band Mipso, along with two additional musical acts.

Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.

Experience the Cherokee at the Qualla Boundary

The Qualla Boundary, which stretches across Swain and Haywood counties, is the ancestral home of the Cherokee containing its mother town, the Museum of the Cherokee

Indian and several other attractions that showcase this ancient culture. The 57,000-acre Qualla Boundary is often referred to as the Cherokee Indian Reservation. Home to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, it offers a wealth of experiences for visitors who want to learn about the Cherokee. Popular attractions include the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, Oconaluftee Indian Village (a re-creation of a 1750s Cherokee village), the outdoor drama Unto These Hills, and the Qualla Arts & Crafts Mutual. Visitors can learn about the Cherokee culture from its beginnings, through the Trail of Tears to present day. Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort also is a popular attraction and recently completed a $633 million expansion.
