EXPLANATORY NOTES

The Major Fruit Crops Quarterly Bulletin provides updates on

production, area and bearing trees statistics of four (4) major fruits,

namely, banana, mango, pineapple and calamansi. These crops are

highlighted in the report on the Performance of Agriculture that the

Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) releases quarterly.

This 1st quarter 2015 issue of the Bulletin provides the preliminary

estimates of production in January-March 2015 and the final estimates

of production in October-December 2014. It also contains data on area

planted and number of bearing trees in July-December and January-

December 2014 which are being reported on a semi-annual basis. The

source of data is the quarterly Crops Production Survey (CrPS) of the

PSA.

January-March 2015

Banana production this quarter was estimated at 2,136.40 thousand mt, 4.0 percent more than the 2,053.42 thousand mt output level in the same period last year.

Several factors contributed to the increment, namely:

o more bearing hills harvested (Cavendish variety) in Mindanao Agri- Traders Inc. in Caraga region and expansion of corporate farms in

Northern Mindanao;

o yields slightly recovered from the adverse effects of series of

typhoons last year in Cagayan Valley, Central and Eastern Visayas; and

o additional area and bearing trees harvested in CAR, Davao Region

and Western Visayas.

Davao Region, the major producer of banana shared 37.7 percent or

805.89 thousand mt to the national total. Northern Mindanao followed with 460.62 thousand mt or 21.6 percent share and ARMM with 138.04 thousand mt or 6.5 percent (Figure 1).

Cavendish variety accounted for 53.0 percent of the total banana

production in the country. Saba and lakatan stood next with 27.0 percent

and 10.0 percent shares, respectively (Figure 2).

Calamansi

Calamansi production in January-March 2015 was estimated at 16.95 thousand mt. This was 2.9 percent below the 2014 production level of 17.45 thousand mt.

The decrease in production was traced to the following:

o smaller fruits produced in Western Visayas and Zamboanga Peninsula;

o production in ARMM and SOCCSKSARGEN were affected by dry

spell;

o shift to dragon plant in Ilocos Region; and o cutting of senile trees in MIMAROPA.

MIMAROPA remained the top producer of calamansi during the period, accounting for 17.3 percent of the national output (Figure 3).

This quarter’s production was 11.0 percent of the 5-year annual average production.

Mango

Mango production this quarter was estimated at 148.85 thousand mt, 7.5 percent below the 2014 production level of 160.94 thousand mt.

The drop in production was attributed to the following: o delayed flowering and fruit setting of trees in CALABARZON due to

adverse effects of typhoon “Glenda”; o movement of harvest to 2nd quarter in Cagayan Valley;

o toppling down of trees by typhoon “Ruby” in Eastern Visayas and by typhoon “Amang” in Bicol Region; and

o less trees induced in Central Visayas and SOCCSKSARGEN.

This quarter’s production accounted for 20.0 percent of the average annual production of mango for the past five (5) years.

Ilocos Region recorded the highest production at 56.5 percent to the total

mango production during the reference period. This was followed by Central

Luzon with 20.2 percent (Figure 4).

Carabao mango comprised 83.0 percent of the national output this quarter (Figure 5).

Pineapple

The country produced 583.14 thousand mt of pineapple this quarter

which is 1.8 percent higher than the 573.08 thousand mt output in 2014.

The production increment was brought about by the following:

o favorable weather condition during fruiting stage in CAR and

Eastern Visayas;

o increase in area harvested due to expansion of corporate farms in Northern Mindanao and shifting of crop from coffee in CALABARZON; and

o bigger fruits developed in Western Visayas resulting from fertilizer application.

The top pineapple producers were Northern Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN, Bicol Region and CALABARZON with a combined share of 97.6 percent to the national pineapple production (Figure 6).

Production this quarter represented 22.0 percent of the 5-year annual average production.

Calamansi

Calamansi production in January-March 2015 was estimated at 16.95 thousand mt. This was 2.9 percent below the 2014 production level of 17.45 thousand mt.

The decrease in production was traced to the following:

o smaller fruits produced in Western Visayas and Zamboanga Peninsula;

o production in ARMM and SOCCSKSARGEN was affected by dry

spell;

o shifted to dragon plant in Ilocos Region; and o cutting of senile trees in MIMAROPA.

MIMAROPA remained the top producer of calamansi during the period, accounting for 17.3 percent of the national output (Figure 3).

This quarter’s production was 9.7 percent of the 5-year annual average production.
