To meet seasonal peak in demand, Etihad Car-go is dedicating an aircraft for ad-hoc charter flying during the fourth quarter and has start-ed taking bookings ahead of the busy month of October.

A few stations have been removed from the new Etihad Cargo freighter network, the larg-

est of which was Nairobi, citing weakening demand and market behaviours that rendered other core markets more attractive to serve.

The fourth quarter will also see Etihad Cargo offer customers incremental lower-deck cargo capacity to and from Abu Dhabi and the key markets of Singapore, Toronto, Cairo, Ban-galore, and for the first time will also offer its customers cargo capacity into and out of Barcelona starting 28 November, when Etihad Airways launches its first direct service to the Spanish city from Abu Dhabi.

“This network strategy is yet another step in the continuous evolution of Etihad Cargo’s ser-vice offering to strengthen our customer value proposition while delivering value to the Eti-had Aviation Group,” added Shadid. “It further compliments our ongoing efforts to maximise premium product verticals such as our SkySta-bles (equine), FlyCulture (arts and music) and FastTrack (mail and courier) products, while prioritising investments in digital and physical infrastructure to reaffirm our place as a true air cargo.

United is also committed to improving the entertainment options for customers with disabilities. Earlier this year, the airline began offering a new main menu category on seatback on-demand that is labelled Ac-cessible Entertainment. This new section makes it easier for custom-ers with hearing and vision challenges to find accessible entertainment options, grouping all of the titles that are either audio descriptive or closed captioned in one main menu category. Seatback on-demand is one of United’s entertainment options available on 757, 767, 777 and 787 aircraft. The carrier currently offers approximately 20 different movies and TV shows that are audio descriptive and more than 50 that

include English closed captioning. Select DIRECTV channels also include closed captioning when the TV station makes it available. United con-tinues to add additional accessible entertainment and screening op-tions across its fleet.

Unique highlights of United’s personal device entertainment program-ming include: an exclusive partnership with VEVO, delivering new, cu-rated music video playlists each month; relaxation content including Headspace, a popular meditation app and Moodica, which takes the brain on a much-needed vacation using videos.

First ANA A380 takes to the skies

The first A380 for All Nippon Airways (ANA) took to the skies on September 17, completing a maiden flight from the Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Toulouse, France to the Airbus site in Hamburg, Germany. The aircraft is now being prepared for cabin installation and painting in the airline’s special A380 livery. ANA HOLDINGS placed a firm order for three A380s in 2016, becoming the first customer for the superjumbo in Japan. The first delivery is scheduled early 2019, and the A380 will initially be operated on the popular Tokyo-Honolulu route. The A380 is the most efficient solution to meet growth on the world’s most heavily travelled routes, car-rying more passengers with fewer flights at lower cost and with less emissions. To date, Airbus has delivered 229 A380s, with the aircraft now in services with 14 airlines worldwide.

Cathay Pacific and Boeing to donate first-ever 777 to Arizona museum

The Pima Air & Space Museum in Arizona is to become the recipient of the first-ever Boeing 777 thanks to a joint donation announced on September 18, by Cathay Pacific and Boeing. The 777-200 plane, line number WA001, was retired in May by Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific after 18 years of operation for the carrier, having first flown in June 1994. During its service with Cathay Pacific the jet, B-HNL, operated 20,519 flights and recorded 49,687 hours of flying time.Cathay Pacific Chief Executive Officer Rupert Hogg said: “As the world’s very first 777, B-HNL holds a very special place in the history of both our airline and that of commercial aviation, and we are very pleased it will soon bring enjoyment to enthusiasts at its new home in Arizona,” adding that: “Our 777-200 aircraft have served us exceptionally well over the last two decades, and as we progressively retire these over the months ahead, we eagerly look forward to welcoming the state-of-the art 777-9 aircraft into our fleet from 2021.” Cathay Pacific was responsible for input into the original design of the 777, affording it the opportunity to have a number of features included which specifically suited its needs, including a cabin cross-section similar to the 747 Jumbo Jet, a modern ‘glass’ cockpit, fly-by-wire system, and, critically, lower operating costs. Cur-rently, Cathay Pacific operates one of the largest 777 fleets in the world. “Cathay Pacific has been instrumental in the tremendous success of the 777 programme. The airline contributed greatly to the airplane’s original design and has been one of its biggest ambassadors ever since. And now they are a launch customer for our new 777X airplane. We are thrilled to partner with Cathay on this donation to the museum as a way to share the remarkable story of the Boeing 777 for years to come,” commented Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Kevin McAllister.

thyssenkrupp Aerospace rigorously implementing certification to the latest quality standards

The aerospace community has the highest standards of quality, safety, security, and reliability. Certification to EN 9100/9110/9120 plays an important role in order to fulfill complex cus-tomer requirements while taking into consideration the utmost quality criteria. Among the leading supply chain specialists in this sector, thyssenkrupp Aerospace has rigorously rolled out its quality management system and organized its locations for the needs of tomorrow. “We have succeeded in converting all our units in Europe to the latest versions of EN 9100s and EN 9120s. What’s more, the branches in the USA, Canada, China, and India have also been certified to international standards. Following an audit, our colleagues in Brazil have likewise been awarded the coveted certification,” states Torben Bunk, Quality Manager at thyssenk-rupp Aerospace. With the successful certification advances, thyssenkrupp Aeropsace is now one of the first companies to have globally progressed to the new standards. An important partner in conducting these worldwide audits is the central department Technology, Innova-tion und Sustainability (TIS) which has years of experience in this area. We are delighted that this project, which we launched over two years ago together with thyssenkrupp Aerospace management, has been successfully finalized. In fact, the certifications underline that we are a reliable supplier to the aerospace industry and, in the best interests of our clients, have adopt-ed the ultimate standards. For this reason, we will convert the remaining locations worldwide to the new standards, too,” adds Thomas Reimann, Head of Quality Management in the Busi-ness Area Materials Services.

Undisclosed airline fleet selects Inflight Humidification for its A350 Business Class

CTT SYSTEMS AB, a market leader of aircraft hu-midity control systems, has reported that an un-disclosed airline has selected Inflight Humidifica-tion (IFH) in Business Class to be line-fitted in its entire Airbus A350-900 fleet. Aircraft delivery is scheduled from the second half of 2019 to 2023. The Inflight Humidification (IFH) system from CTT Systems is a highly appreciated feature in the VIP aircraft world. Powered by humidifiers onboard, the Business Class cabin environment is elevated to the same VIP-level with best wellbeing per-formance on the market. Business Class passen-gers will more easily stay hydrated, aiding better taste, improved quality of sleep as well as reduc-tion of jetlag. A cabin climate optimized for well-being is all about replicating earth conditions. Modern wide-body aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, have made great progress in lowering cabin altitude, reducing noise and vibrations, generating draft-free and fresher air, creating multiple temperature zones and im-plementing advanced mode lightning. The level of humidity is the next cabin climate feature in order to improve the performance of the cabin and elevate the total cabin environment expe-rience. Although basic configured Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 aircraft obtain a passive increase in humidity of 1-2 % RH, it is still far too dry – drier than any of the driest climates on earth. In a Business Class cabin, without a humidification system, air humidity is only 6-10 % RH. By select-ing optional cabin humidifiers, available as SFE on both the Airbus A350XWB and Boeing 777X, passengers can benefit from best cabin environ-ment in the air.

Relying on its unrivalled experience in landing gear systems, Liebherr-Aerospace will design and manufacture the main gear steering control unit, as well as the nose gear steering position transducer. Boeing’s 777 and 777X aircraft utilize a steered aft axle on each of the main gears to minimize turning radius and reduce tire scrub. The main gear steering control unit receives signals from the two nose gear steering position transducers (one on the captain tiller and one on the first officer tiller) and controls the two power control actuators (one per each main landing gear aft axle). It assists normal taxi maneuvers whenever the nose gear is steered greater than 13° and provides a locking mechanism to lock the aft axles in the centered position. Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg GmbH, Lindenberg (Germany), Liebherr’s center of excellence for flight con-trol and landing gear systems will be in charge of developing and qualifying the units. The qualifica-tion as well as the manufacturing of the main gear steering control will be conducted in house at Liebherr-Elektronik GmbH, Lindau (Germany), center of excellence for electronic hardware devel-opment and manufacturing, in order to remain in control of this key electronic unit and to provide Boeing the high quality that Liebherr is known for. Liebherr-Aerospace will support the design and development also from its liaison office in Seattle to ensure a close interaction with Boeing.

Small Planet Airlines will restructure its German business

Small Planet Airlines, a part of Small Planet Group, has commenced a restructuring process. The German Civil Aviation Authority has no ob-jections that the Air Operator’s License will re-main in place and therefore all scheduled flights of Small Planet Airlines will continue to operate as before. Small Planet Airlines has been operat-ing as an independent entity in Germany since 2015 and acquired its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) in the spring of 2016. This year Small Planet Airlines decided to go for rapid expan-sion which didn’t go according to plan. “After Air Berlin went bankrupt last year, a niche emerged for the other carriers, and Small Planet Airlines (Germany) chose to grow more than double in size in order to take advantage of these newly opened possibilities in the market. However, the company struggled to manage this successfully due to several factors: late delivery of aircraft before the start of the summer season, shortage of crews in the market, unreliable sub-charter aircraft and unforeseeable technical events had a devastating impact on a very intense schedule, which led to flight irregularities which in turn led to increasing cost burden. The financial losses in-curred by the German company forced it to file for a restructuring process under the German law. Nevertheless, the company continues op-erations under restructuring,” said Vytautas Kai-karis, the CEO of Small Planet Group, adding that “We all stand together in this period to achieve the best possible result out of restructuring for our employees, clients and partners.”

ured stand can service either one long-haul air-craft with a 65-meter wing-span, or two smaller ones with a wing-span of up to 36 meters each. The stand, with gate, is located in Terminal 1 and will substantially increase the airport’s capacity and make the boarding process more comfort-able and faster, especially for long-haul flights which are becoming more and more prevalent at Prague. The new waiting area connected to the new gate has a maximum capacity of 430 pas-sengers and includes three departure gates: A3, A4 and A10. The first two gates lead directly to the airplane via a bridge, the third gate is located on the ground floor and meant to service aircraft waiting at distant stands. The new stand is a part of Prague Airport’s short-term development plans aimed at increasing the airport’s capacity and contributing to its overall modernization. Perhaps the most visible change from the passengers’ perspective is the interior design of the new gate area provided by the Prague office of the Chap-man Taylor architect studio. Brand-new boarding counters for handling companies were add to the area. The modern interior uses designer elements such as a dropped ceiling combined with line light fixtures. The gate area also features a modern green wall While, overall, the new area means an increase in passenger comfort and will make the check-in and boarding process more efficient.

There is a considerable amount of discontent among a number of shareholders in Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair ahead of next Thursday’s annual shareholders’ meeting. In particular, there is concern over how the company is being run, with Royal London Asset Management, RLAM, The Local Authority Pension Fund, plus shareholder advisory firms Glass Lewis and ISS recommending a vote against the current chairman, David Bonderman, at the AGM. “We are also concerned with Ryanair’s corporate governance and poor stakeholder management, which could have an impact on the long-term future of the company,” Ashley Hamilton Clax-ton, head of responsible investment at RLAM, has commented. With Ryanair having suffered its worst spate of strikes this past summer and only an agreement reached with Irish pilots, cabin crew in Spain, The Netherlands, Italy and Portugal are still planning a one-day strike on the September 28 and one day every month thereafter until their demands have been met. The British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) has made it clear that the relationship between Ryanair management and pilots has become “utterly dysfunctional”, which is putting the fu-ture success of the company at risk. BALPA is urging shareholders to replace both O’Leary and Bonderman. Ryanair has confirmed it is confident that shareholders will back the airline at the meeting. A spokesperson for the low-cost carrier said: “Ryanair shareholders will pass all AGM resolutions by a large majority this year, including the nomination of directors and chairman, as they have done in all previous years. They appreciate how fortunate we are to have an out-standing chairman like David Bonderman guide the board and the airline.”

OAG, the airline data specialist, has released the results of a new study on the U.S.’s top 25 air-ports, revealing that in terms of connectivity, Chi-cago O’Hare Airport comes top of the list for the third year in a row. The airport’s actual Connec-tivity Index Score was 479, up 24 points from last year and well ahead of Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson Airport, which scored 396 points.Part of Chicago O’Hare’s success comes from its two main tenants, United Airlines and Ameri-can Airlines, both of whom have expanded their routes over the last two years. Both carriers use the airport as a major hub for passengers who are connecting with final-destination flights. O’Hare is also in an unusual position in that it is a major hub for two of America’s largest carriers, the largest hub for United and third-largest hub for American Airlines, while Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson Airport is the largest hub for Delta Air Lines which has only a nominal presence at O’Hare. In terms of global results, O’Hare was the second-most con-nected airport behind London Heathrow which remains the crossroads for many airlines which operate on a global basis, serving a huge number of international destinations. While the report’s results present good news for Chicago’s mayor Rahm Emmanuel who recently gave the go-ahead with a US$8.5 billion multi-year revamp of the air-port, including a new international terminal, next year’s results may well differ. American Airlines recently announced new routes from O’Hare to Shanghai and Beijing, while United Airlines is fo-cusing the expansion if international routes from hubs other than Chicago O’Hare. At their first-ever forum, the UN International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Eu-ropean Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) joined forces to bring together South East Asian avia-tion stakeholders to discuss the future of air transport in the South East Asian region.Travel to, from, and within South East Asia is expected to increase at an average 6.6% annually over the next 20 years. The civil aviation authorities of South East Asia are facing increased air traffic in the face of ongoing major infrastructure limi-tations, leading to improved requirements for safety and efficiently operation of aviation facili-ties and services. Patrick Ky, Executive Director of EASA, said “Development of the Seamless ASE-AN Sky together with the ASEAN Single Aviation

Market is a must. It will soon become irrelevant how many passengers the airlines carry, aircraft are bought, or freedoms of the air are agreed – if the air traffic management system cannot han-dle the demand, the only thing that is created is delays.” “Besides the forecast growth here, many South East Asia governments will be confronted by a rapidly evolving sectoral environment in terms of technologies, operations, and business models,” commented ICAO Secretary General Dr. Fang Liu. “But as operations here continue to grow, and States continue to prosper from that growth, it is imperative that we continue to work continuously and cooperatively toward our shared objectives.” Climate change was also discussed at the forum in Bangkok, Thailand, prompting the ICAO to advance environmental standards for civil aviation without traffic growth disruption, and the advanced digitalisation of aviation data to improve levels of efficiency and safety.

At a time when Boeing is predicting the need for 127,000 new commercial pilots in North America over the next 20 years, the acting Fed-eral Aviation Administration (FAA) chief Dan Elwell is quoted as saying at a recent forum on the aviation workforce that: “We have a dimin-ishing supply of qualified pilots, mechanics, and technicians.” Current figures show that over the last ten years, the number of U.S. private pilots with active certificates decreased by 27% and the number of commercial pilots fell by 21%. Boeing has also identified a need for a further 754,000 new aircraft over the next two dec-ades. According to U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, worldwide, air passengers are ex-pected to nearly double from 4 billion in 2017 to 7.8 billion by 2036. Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson said at the forum that beyond industry demand for pilots, the military also needs more pilots. She said the Air Force was 2,000 pilots short of staffing needs, including 1,300 fighter pilots, “We have to be in it together because if we continue to try to cannibalize off each other we will never solve the core problem, which is

There has been mention of speeding up pilots’ training through the inclusion of simula-tor training counting towards pilot hours, though this idea has not been welcomed by a number of safety advocates.
