STUDY TOUR
ISRAEL
with Pastor Bud Wenzel
Sunday, June 3: depart USA on your flight to Israel.
Those from Seattle will take the included flight to LAX to
connect up with those from San Diego who will make their
way by land to LAX—from where all will fly non-stop to
Israel. Anyone wishing to join the group from other than
San Diego or Seattle should contact the tour operator.
Monday, June 4: after arriving in Israel at Ben Gurion
airport near Tel Aviv, meet guide Gilla Treibich and the
driver of our deluxe coach for brief sightseeing in the Tel
Aviv/Joppa area before going to our hotel on the shores of
the Mediterranean Sea. We have breakfast and dinner
daily in hotels.
Tuesday, June 5: we head up the Mediterranean coast
to Caesarea Maritime, the artificial harbor and city built by
Herod the Great. A restored Roman theater where proof
of the historical existence of Pontius Pilate was found is a
highlight at Caesarea, along with a Crusader fortress built
during an earlier war with Muslims and an aqueduct built
by Herod the Great. Continue north to Mt Carmel for a
breathtaking view of the Jezreel valley from the spot
where Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal. Drive
through the lush valley to Megiddo, the always strategic
city in biblical history and biblical Armageddon (Rev.
16:16). Drive into the Galilee and visit Jesus’ boyhood city
of Nazareth. Check into our hotel for a three-night stay in
Tiberias, the modern capital of Galilee on the shore of the
Sea of Galilee.
Wednesday, June 6: sail on the Sea of Galilee in an
enlarged version of the boats used by Jesus and his
fishermen disciples, then study an actual boat from the time
of Jesus as
it was
discovered
on the floor
of the Sea of
Galilee. Re-
experience
the
challenging
and
comforting words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount at
the Mt of Beatitudes. At Capernaum, where Jesus based
his 18-month Galilean ministry, stand within the foundations
of the synagogue where He preached and healed and see
the house of Peter’s family where He stayed. For lunch,
you will have the opportunity to try St Peter’s Fish, the same
variety netted by the apostles. There will be an exciting
baptism ceremony during the day for those who desire to be
baptized in the Jordan River.
Thursday, June 7: traverse northern Israel today, including
Caesarea Philippi, center of Roman might and pagan
worship in Jesus’ time, where He challenged his disciples
then and now, “Who do men--and who do you--say that I
am?” Explore one example of that Roman might in the
recently-excavated Palace of Agrippa. Continue to the
northernmost city of biblical Israel, Dan, and see the
excavated gates that Abraham entered as he first
journeyed through the Promised Land. In the beautiful and
strategically-vital Golan Heights, guide Gilla Treibich will
comment on and analyze Israel’s modern-day political
struggles, including a look over into Syria and the
Damascus Road.
Friday, June 8: start heading south in the Jordan Valley,
stopping first at Bet Shean, where the bodies of King Saul
and his sons were hung by the Philistines. A Decapolis city
in Jesus’ day, Bet Shean was both destroyed and saved
by an earthquake, as archaeologists have now done a
fantastic job restoring the ruins. Stop at Gideon’s Spring,
where the Lord directed his Judge to winnow down Israel’s
army in a surprising fashion. While following the Jordan
Valley, speculate on the possible location of biblical Gilgal,
where Joshua and the tribes placed 12 stones in
celebration of their safe crossing of the Jordan; we may do
the same, in an act of solidarity with our biblical
ancestors. Before entering Jerusalem, drink in the
breathtaking views from a panoramic overlook and be
welcomed to the Holy City by a special Hebrew
ceremony.
Check into
your hotel
for the rest
of the trip.
Saturday,
June 9:
drive
through the
lunar
landscape of the Judean Wilderness on the way to the
Dead Sea, lowest spot on earth with water so salty you
cannot sink (bring a swimsuit if you want to try). Ascend
by cable car to Masada, the fortress-palace built by Herod
the Great, where zealous Jews resisted the might of Rome
after the destruction of the Temple. Visit the caves where
the Dead Sea Scrolls were found at Qumran. View the
date-palm oasis of En Gedi (where the hunted David
spared the life of vengeful King Saul) with a hike for those
who want to climb to the caves and the source of the
almost-miraculous spring in the heart of the Dead Sea
desert.
Sunday, June 10: begin your exploration of Jerusalem
with a special worship service on the very Southern Steps
to the Temple that Jesus taught on during the last days
before His Passion. Also see the remains of the Pinnacle
of the Temple cast to the ground when the Temple was
destroyed. Go UNDER the Temple Walls when you
explore the famous “Rabbi’s Tunnel.”
Pray at the Western (or Wailing) Wall. At the Israel
Museum, get an orientation to the city as it was in Jesus’
day at a huge and amazingly detailed outdoor scale model,
then study the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Shrine of the Book.
Monday, June 11: in Jerusalem, explore the “Burnt House”
(a wealthy Jewish family home destroyed when the Romans
burned the Temple in 70 A.D.). Wander the Jewish Quarter
of the Old City
including the
restored
Roman
shopping road
known as The
Cardo. Visit
our friend
Moshe at the
Shorashim
biblical gift
shop (he also gives marvelous talks on the Hebrew roots of
Christianity). Free time to explore the Old City, plus a
special shopping opportunity will be arranged for olive wood
carvings and jewelry crafted by artisans from Bethlehem.
Tuesday, June 12: explore Temple Mount, where the
temples of Solomon and Herod were located, now
dominated by a gold-domed Muslim mosque. Pray for the
health of loved ones at the healing Pools of Bethesda, then
worship in the acoustically-marvelous Crusader Church of
St Anne. Another miracle of healing was at the Pool of
Siloam, which you will explore, along with Hezekiah’s
Tunnel (those who wish to wade through the spring-filled
tunnel should bring a flashlight and wading shoes). The day
will also include an excursion down to bedrock for the
exciting recent discoveries about the origins of Jerusalem
when it was “The City of David.”
Wednesday, June 13: check out of the hotel late this
morning, then worship at the Upper Room before following
Jesus from the crest of the Mount of Olives down the Palm
Sunday path to the Garden of Gethsemane, then to the
House of Caiphas, where Peter denied his Lord and where
Jesus was held in a dungeon. In the narrow, winding
streets of the Old City, stand at the Lithostrotus, the
pavement where Jesus was tormented by the soldiers, then
follow traditional sites of His way to the cross. End this
glorious day at the hillside where nature has hollowed out
caves that indicate it could be Golgotha (“place of the skull”)
and celebrate Holy Communion in a beautiful private garden
with a gloriously empty tomb where the stone has been
rolled away. Dinner at a nice restaurant before heading to
the airport for the non-stop flight back to LAX, then on to
Seattle or San Diego on Thursday, June 14.

STUDY TOUR
ISRAEL
with Pastor Bud Wenzel
Sunday, June 3: Depart USA on your flight to Israel.
Those from Seattle will take the included flight to LAX to
connect up with those from San Diego who will make their
way by land to LAX—from where all will fly non-stop to
Israel. Anyone wishing to join the group from other than
San Diego or Seattle should contact the tour operator.
Monday, June 4: After arriving in Israel at Ben Gurion
airport near Tel Aviv, meet guide Gilla Treibich and the
driver of our deluxe coach for brief sightseeing in the Tel
Aviv/Joppa area. Then, proceed to our hotel on the shores
of the Mediterranean Sea. We have gourmet breakfast
and dinner daily in hotels.
Tuesday, June 5: We head up the Mediterranean coast
to Caesarea Maritime, the artificial harbor and city built by
Herod the Great. A restored Roman theater where proof
of the historical existence of Pontius Pilate was found is a
highlight at Caesarea, along with a Crusader fortress built
during an earlier war with Muslims. Also see an aqueduct
built by Herod the Great. Continue north to Mt Carmel for
a breathtaking view of the Jezreel valley from the spot
where Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal. Drive
through the lush valley to Megiddo, the always strategic
city in biblical history and biblical Armageddon (Rev.
16:16). Drive into the Galilee and visit Jesus’ boyhood city
of Nazareth. Check into our hotel for a three-night stay in
Tiberias, the modern capital of Galilee on the shore of the
Sea of Galilee.
Wednesday, June 6: Sail on the Sea of Galilee in an
enlarged version of the boats used by Jesus and his
fishermen disciples. Then study an actual boat from the time
of Jesus as
it was
discovered
on the floor
of the Sea of
Galilee. Re-
experience
the
challenging
and
comforting words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount at
the Mt of Beatitudes. At Capernaum, where Jesus based
his 18-month Galilean ministry, stand within the foundations
of the synagogue where He preached and healed. See the
house of Peter’s family where He stayed. For lunch, you
will have the opportunity to try St Peter’s Fish, the same
variety netted by the apostles. There will be an exciting
baptism ceremony during the day for those who desire to be
baptized in the Jordan River.
Thursday, June 7: Traverse northern Israel today,
including Caesarea Philippi, center of Roman strength and
pagan worship in Jesus’ time. This is where He challenged
his disciples, “Who do men--and who do you--say that I
am?" Explore one example of Roman might in the recently-
excavated Palace of Agrippa. Continue to the northernmost
city of biblical Israel, Dan, and see the excavated gates that
Abraham entered as he first journeyed through the
Promised Land. In the beautiful and strategically-vital
Golan Heights, guide Gilla Treibich will comment on and
analyze Israel’s modern-day political struggles. Then, take
a breathtaking look into Syria and see the famous
Damascus Road.
Friday, June 8: Start heading south in the Jordan Valley,
stopping first at Bet Shean, where the bodies of King Saul
and his sons were hung by the Philistines. A Decapolis city
in Jesus’ day, Bet Shean was both destroyed and saved
by an earthquake. Archaeologists have done a fantastic
job restoring the ruins. Stop at Gideon’s Spring, where the
Lord directed his Judge to winnow down Israel’s army in a
surprising fashion. Here Pastor Bud will conduct some
fantastic teaching on surrendering our weaknesses and
relying on the strength of the Lord. While following the
Jordan Valley, speculate on the possible location of biblical
Gilgal, where Joshua and the tribes placed 12 stones in
celebration of their safe crossing of the Jordan; we will do
the same in remembrance of His blessings in our lives.
Before entering Jerusalem, drink in the breathtaking views
from a panoramic overlook and be welcomed to the Holy
City by a special Hebrew ceremony. Check into your hotel
for the rest of the trip.
Saturday, June 9: Drive through the lunar landscape of
the Judean Wilderness on the way to the Dead Sea,
lowest spot on
earth with
water so salty
you cannot
sink (bring a
swimsuit if you
want to try).
Ascend by
cable car to
Masada, the
fortress-palace built by Herod the Great, where zealous
Jews resisted the might of Rome after the destruction of
the Temple. Visit the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls
were found at Qumran. View the date-palm oasis of En
Gedi (where the hunted David spared the life of vengeful
King Saul) with a hike for those who want to climb to the
caves and the source of the almost-miraculous spring in
the heart of the Dead Sea desert.
Sunday, June 10: Begin your exploration of Jerusalem
with a special worship service on the very Southern Steps
of the Temple that Jesus taught on, and experience a
wondrous suprise that can only be seen while standing in
that very spot. Also see the remains of the Pinnacle of the
Temple. Go UNDER the Temple Walls when you explore
the famous “Rabbi’s Tunnel.”
Pray at the Western (or Wailing) Wall. At the Israel
Museum, get an orientation to the city as it was in Jesus’
day at a huge and amazingly detailed outdoor scale model,
then study the actual Dead Sea Scrolls at the Shrine of the
Book.
Monday, June 11: In Jerusalem, explore the “Burnt House”
(a wealthy Jewish family home destroyed when the Romans
burned the
Temple in 70
A.D.). Wander
the Jewish
Quarter of the
Old City. Visit
our friend
Moshe at the
Shorashim
biblical gift
shop (he also
gives marvelous talks on the Hebrew roots of Christianity).
Free time to explore the Old City, plus a special shopping
opportunity will be arranged for olive wood carvings and
jewelry crafted by artisans from Bethlehem.
Tuesday, June 12: Explore Temple Mount, where the
temples of Solomon and Herod were located. Here you can
walk on the most sacred spot on earth. Pray for the health
of loved ones at the healing Pools of Bethesda, then
worship in the acoustically-marvelous Crusader Church of
Jesus's journey from the crest of the Mount of Olives down
the Palm Sunday path to the Garden of Gethsemane. Enjoy
an up close and personal view of the great Eastern (Golden)
Gate where Jesus is expected to return through. Then to the
House of Caiphas, where Peter denied his Lord and where
Jesus was held in a dungeon. In the narrow, winding
streets of the Old City, stand at the Lithostrotus, the
pavement where Jesus was tormented by the soldiers. End
this glorious day at the hillside called Golgotha (“place of the
skull”) and celebrate Holy Communion in a beautiful private
garden with an actual empty tomb where the stone has
been rolled away. Dinner at a nice restaurant before
heading to the airport for the non-stop flight back to LAX,
then, on to Seattle or San Diego on Thursday, June 14.
