during the 1930s• This is upsetting to local Arab peoples• World War II creates thousands of Jewish refugees

Early Israel

• 1948—Israel is created as a Jewish state and is recognized by the United Nations.

• As Jews move in, Palestinians are forced out (thousands of Palestinian refugees.)

• Economic success comes quickly—Jews work together to farm, manufacture & create a military.

Arabs Attack

•Israel shocks the world by repelling an attack by Egypt and winning the war in six days (Six Day War)

Palestine Liberation Organization

• Palestine wants self rule.• Yassir Arafat leads the

PLO.• Signed Wye Agreement

as a step toward peace.• Some see him as a hero,

others as a terrorist.
