First things first, what is ISO?
ISO stands for International Standards Organisation
What is ISO? ISO is the world’s largest developer of voluntary International Standards.
A standard is a document that provides requirements, specifications, guidelines or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose.
There are over 19,000 ISO standards
Developed through global consensus, ISO standards
help to break down barriers to international trade
ISO 9001 is the most popular quality management standard in the world.

•ISO 9001 was created in 1987 and is a generic management standard
•Since then around one million companies have been certified with ISO 9001
•ISO 9001 is appropriate for all businesses, regardless of size or sector
•ISO 9001 certification is important within the supply chain and is mandated by•many governments and businesses

The most commonly cited benefits of ISO 9001certification are:

Using data collected from ISO’s annual quality management survey, we look at how population size relates to the number of ISO certificates gained.

We took the population of each country, and worked out the percentage of ISO certificates relative to population.
Despite being 5th in terms of certificates issues, Germany leads the way in terms of population to certificate ratio.
The UK is surprisingly low in the list; has the ISO market here reached maturity?
