Kitty J. Heller Healing Power of Art ProgramThis innovative, inspired project engages professional art and drama therapists to work directly with community members to address a variety of health and wellness-related issues and concerns. This initiative is not about creating artists; its goal is to help people to understand and cope with physical or mental health concerns through the healing powers of artistic expression. Gabriola Island—where ART is the heart of the community!

This ten-day festival is a favourite for locals and off-islanders, with more than 70 arts and culture workshops in a variety of mediums and genres including theatre, dance, music, ceramics, painting, drawing, textiles, writing, silversmithing, culinary arts, encaustic, carving, and more! Round out the evening with beautiful music, a stunning ocean sunset, and a delicious meal. It’s our annual extravagant literary night—don’t miss out!

William Deverell—lawyer, environmentalist, civil rights activist, “one of Canada’s best and funniest mystery writers” (Ottawa Citizen)—is founder and honourary director of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, and the recipient of multiple literary awards, including the $50,000 Seal Prize, the Dashiell Hammett Award for Literary Excellence, and the Arthur Ellis Prize in Crime Writing; his books have been shortlisted twice for the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour. Dr. Sonnet L‘Abbé —poet, essayist, public speaker—is author of two poetry collections, A Strange Relief and Killarnoe. L’Abbé was editor of Best Canadian Poetry 2014 and was the 2015 Edna Staebler Writer in Residence at Wilfrid Laurier University. She has taught creative writing at University of British Columbia–Okanagan and at University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies. Dr. L’Abbé is a Creative Writing and English instructor at Vancouver Island University.

One of “the most important playwrights working in Canada today” (Toronto Star), Joan MacLeod has received two Chalmers Canadian Play Awards, the Governor General’s Award, and the Siminovitch Prize for Theatre. MacLeod’s plays include Amigo’s Blue Guitar, The Hope Slide, Little Sister, The Shape of a Girl, and The Valley. MacLeod teaches in the Department of Writing at the University of Victoria. www.joanmacleod.com

Gabriolan Jill Talbot studied psychology at Simon Fraser University. After sitting through lectures on rat laughter, she realized that she was in the wrong place and became a writer. Talbot’s work was shortlisted for the 2015 Matrix Lit POP Award, and has appeared in sub-Terrain. Western Edge Theatre staged a reading of her play, God in Psych Ward Pajamas in 2015.

Justin Kautz, a musician and performer from Edmonton, is Gabriola's Artist in Residence. He'll start off the evening with a musical performance. Don’t miss his STOMP-inspired festival workshop later in the week!

Hosted by Susan Yates, Gabriola's favourite retired librarian and lover of all things literary.

Friday, April 1Rug Hooking: Basics & Beyond | Part 1 of 29:00 am – 12:00 pm » with Maia Levine Learn the basics of pulling loops in the ages-old craft of traditional rug hooking. Beginners as well as those who haven’t hooked in a while will create a one-of-a-kind pillow top or hot mat.

Maia Levine inherited her Gram’s rug hooks and has been happily rug hooking ever since. Her work was included in The Chair Affair and The Atlas Affair, featured and sold in gallery shows on Vancouver Island, and in the International Rug Hooking Guild show in Victoria.

Required tools: Cloth scissors. You will receive a rug hook as part of the fee.

Beyond the Selfie: Creating Your True Self Portrait12:00 pm – 5:00 pm » with Karen CainIn this stimulating workshop, Karen will guide you to create your self-portrait, working with a variety of techniques and processes. Your portrait will reflect your inner and outer self, using narrative, history, myth, fact, and fiction. No painting or drawing experience necessary.

Karen Cain established Stones Throw Studio and Gallery on Gabriola 20 years ago. A seminal trip to Japan to lecture at Tamagawa University continues to inform her work, in its interrelationship between nature and art. Her work has been shown and collected extensively. www.karencain.ca

Heather Cameron is a professional visual artist working primarily in textiles. She holds a post-graduate diploma in art therapy. Heather’s skills include embroidery, spinning, weaving, dyeing, knitting, crochet, rug hooking, and quilting.

Required Materials: sewing machine, 10-15 pieces of fabric (fat quarters and generous scraps), rotary cutter, cutting mat, spool of neutral grey or tan thread, extra sewing machine needles, snacks.

If You Can’t Grow It, Don’t Eat It1:30 pm – 4:30 pm » with Aaron Dewarle Participate in all the steps necessary to grow a bounty of organic food. Aaron will provide an over-view of farm and garden design, preparing the land, adding nutrients, seeding, and transplanting. Participants will do hands-on transplanting and potting up, and take home a tomato plant.

Aaron Dewarle is an organic farmer. Along with his wife and kids, he grows almost every type of vegetable, maintains berry bushes and fruit trees, raises chickens, honeybees, and alpacas. They find satisfaction in preparing delicious meals exclusively with food grown on their farm! www.thegardenbed.ca

Creating with Pa-Ta-Ti | Part 1 of 22:00 pm – 5:00 pm » with Kimm Nightingale and Joke Mensink Work with cardboard, tape, newspaper, tissue, and glue to create a light-catching hanging heart or orb. Set in glass pieces, beads, or special stones, and add copper wire, feathers, twigs, newspaper, etc. The base process of this creative form is paper products and inexpensive and easy-to-find items from homes and nature. Many hang these creations in windows to warn birds.

Kimm Nightingale & Joke Mensink have been creating scupltures together for more than 12 years.

Required Materials: larger soft paintbrush, small stiff paintbrush. Please also bring a snack and a special rock or memento to set in your piece—1 to 2 inches (optional).

For over 40 years, Tarot has been the brightest of Dar Yuile’s passions. She has read cards for many people over the years, providing clear insights and wise counsel. Dar and a colleague have designed a Tarot-Astro Wheel as a tool to simplify and enlighten others.

Tuesday, April 5Cutting Loose: Creative Quilt-Making without Patterns9:30 am – 3:30 pm » with Kristin MillerMove beyond conventional quilting, and bring liveliness and vitality to your quilt art. Learn to follow your visual instincts and intuition. Experienced quilters will add freshness and spontaneity; newcomers can plunge into imaginative and expressive quilt-making. Basic sewing skills and a sewing machine are helpful, but not required.

Kristin Miller’s decades of quilting have convinced her that it’s fun to cut loose creatively. She wrote a “design-as-you-sew” quilting book, has exhibited with the Fibre Art Network, and founded the activist Positive Energy Quilters group. Her quilts and commissions are in collections around the world.
