PULAU PERHENTIAN

Located 21 km off the coast of Terengganu, Pulau Perhentian consists of the islands of Perhentian Besar (Big Perhentian) and Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian). The name Perhentian means ‘stopover point’ in Malay, referring to the islands’ traditional role as a sanctuary for fishermen and ancient traders plying the eastern and western sea routes. Both islands are covered by untouched jungle, a stopover for migratory birds, fringed by powdery white sandy beaches, windswept palms and surrounded by sapphire blue waters. Its excellent underwater seascape is lush with a wide variety of soft and hard coral gardens, sea-turtles, and diverse marine life.

Pulau Perhentian was chosen by a CNN survey in 2013 as the 13th Best Beach in the world. In 2010, The Lonely Planet Travel Guide Book recognized Pulau Perhentian as the 5th Best Beach to Swing the Hammock. Both the islands offer options of accommodation and facilities that suit discerning holiday makers of all ages and budgets.

How to get thereKuala Besut Tourist Jetty - (1 ½ hour drive up north from Kuala Terengganu). There are ferries and speedboats available daily with morning departures. The return ticket to the island is RM70.00 per person. There are water taxis available

for shuttles between the village and all the resorts on Perhentian Kecil and Perhentian Besar. Rates vary

depending from which resort on which island. It costs double for transfers after 7.00 pm.

PULAU REDANG

Approximately 45 km off Kuala Terengganu, lies Pulau Redang. The island is reachable either by a one and a half hour journey by ferry from Shahbandar Jetty in Kuala Terengganu or by a 40 minute speedboat ride from the Merang Jetty.

Accommodations of various budgets are mainly located in the Long Beach area while a five star resort is located at Teluk Dalam area. Sheltered within the Pulau Redang gazetted Marine Park, the waters here are rich in marine life. This paradise-like island is a perfect place for snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving, jungle trekking, boating and canoeing.

Those interested in fishing or squid jigging should try their luck in the vicinity waters off Pulau Chepu. It is a small rocky island off the coast of Setiu, accessible by a 20 minute speedboat ride.

PULAU LANG TENGAH

Lang Tengah Island is a tiny island located between Pulau Redang and Pulau Perhentian and is connected to the mainland by a 30 minute speedboat ride from Merang Jetty. Visitors from Kuala Terengganu need to travel about half an hour up north to this jetty.

Pulau Lang Tengah’s untouched tropical jungle still retains its natural ecosystem. The sea promises soft and hard colourful corals of unrivaled beauty with an abundance of marine life. There are only four resorts here, each with their own private beach. Visitors can laze around practically undisturbed on the soft powdery sandy beaches. With its crystal clear seawater, white beaches and tropical island forest, it is definitely appealing to holiday goers looking for a quiet island tropical getaway.

How to get thereSpeedboats to Lang Tengah Island ply daily service from Merang Jetty which is a 40 minute drive north from Kuala Terengganu. The transfer from Merang takes approximately 30 minutes. The return ticket from both jetties to Lang Tengah is RM100.00 per person.

PULAU BIDONG

This historic little island was internationally known as the relocation centre for Vietnamese refugees during the mid 70’s until its closure in the early 90’s. It is located northeast of Kuala Terengganu and is reachable by a 30 - 40 minute speedboat ride from Merang Jetty.

Remnants of a hospital, school, sundry shops, workshops, temple and camps are a stark reminder of what used to be home to thousands of boat people. Since there are no accommodation facilities on the island, visitors from Redang Island can arrange a day trip to Bidong to enjoy snorkeling and diving in its pristine waters. There is an underwater gallery that hosts replicas of the Terengganu Inscription Stone (Batu Bersurat), a traditional arch, a Keris, a traditional sampan and betel chewing canisters (tepak sireh), all located 15 m underwater.

How to get thereTo get to the island, you need to catch a boat from Merang Jetty which is about 30 minutes or 40 km north of Kuala Terengganu and it takes another 30 minutes to reach the island.

PULAU KAPAS

Kapas Island is the smallest and the nearest island to the mainland. It is accessible with a 10 minute speedboat ride from Marang Jetty, which is situated 18 km south of Kuala Terengganu. This little haven in the South China Sea has attracted backpackers and local family groups for a pleasant getaway especially during weekends for relaxation, sun bathing, diving and snorkeling. The vicinity of Kapas Island is also well known for the squid breeding grounds where annual squid jigging activities take place from March - August.

How to get thereThe tourist jetty in Marang town is a mere 20 minutes drive south of Kuala Terengganu. The speedboat ride takes just 10 minutes as Kapas is the nearest island to the mainland and it costs RM40.00 per person for a return trip.

PULAU GEMIA

Gemia Island or Gem Island is a smaller island sharing the same waters in the vicinity of Kapas Island. It is one of the few privately owned islands in Malaysia with accommodation that blends into the island’s superb natural beauty. It is located in a Marine Conservation Park with crystal clear waters, a spectacular underwater seascape of corals and marine life as some of its natural wonders.

How to get thereRegular boat services are available from Marang Jetty and it takes 10 minutes by speedboat to reach the island.

PULAU TENGGOL

Pulau Tenggol lies within a 45 minute boat ride from Kuala Dungun, a quaint fishing town 68 km south of Kuala Terengganu. With three resorts offering moderate accommodation and diving facilities, it is a favourite among hardcore divers looking for thrilling night dives and shipwrecks. Pulau Tenggol is famous as the feeding ground for migratory whale sharks, it is a rare sight to behold the divers to be ‘up-close and personal’ with whale sharks in their natural habitat.

How to get thereKuala Dungun Jetty is a 1 hour scenic coastal drive south of Kuala Terengganu. The morning speedboat journey to the island takes approximately 45 minutes and costs RM110.00 per person.

PANTAI BATU BURUK

This recreation beach is the preferred place for weekend holiday retreats in Kuala Terengganu, a favourite among youngsters and families. Feel the cool breeze while strolling on the wide stretch of sandy beach overlooking the South China Sea. A children’s playground, horse riding activities, jogging tracks, toilets, eating stalls and performance stage are available. Locals and tourists alike flock to the beach spending quality time with the family and their loved ones.

How to get there Batu Buruk is the closest beach from the city centre. It is reachable by bus (Marang / Dungun), trishaw and taxi or even on foot if you like walking (about 20 minutes from city centre).

PANTAI PANDAK, CHENDERING

About 6 km south of Kuala Terengganu, Pantai Pandak in Chendering is yet another preferred beach in Kuala Terengganu with a great view. The coved beach along shallow water in between the rocky section provides a suitable atmosphere for family camping trips. This stretch of beach is ideal for bathing especially during low tide but be extra cautions not to go in too deep to avoid undercurrent. Fresh seafood products are available at the food stalls here.

How to get there There are public buses that ply the Dungun / Marang route from Kuala Terengganu. It takes 15 minutes to reach Chendering junction and another 15 minutes of walking to the beach.

PANTAI KEMASIK

Slightly further north of Chukai, Kemaman is Kemasik Beach which looks dazzling and inviting. This beach is a good place to take a stroll and enjoy the breeze coming off the South China Sea. There are some nice rock formations at the end of the beach which provide a scenic photographic background.

How to get there From Chukai Town, drive for another 1/2 hour northward. Upon reaching Kijal, look

for the sign “Pantai Kemasik”.

PANTAI TELUK KETAPANG

Pantai Teluk Ketapang is the quiet, wide stretch of beach in Kuala Terengganu. It is located to the north of the Terengganu River. There are food stalls conveniently located within the vicinity of Kuala Terengganu airport that are famous for their local food such as fish snacks (keropok lekor) and battered deep fried squid, prawns and fish. The breathtaking view of Pantai Teluk Ketapang offers a refreshing and tranquil experience to suit your holiday experience.

How to get there Drive through Sultan Mahmud Bridge on the way to the airport which is 18 km north of Kuala Terengganu. The food stalls are just behind the airport.

PANTAI BATU RAKIT

Pantai Batu Rakit is yet another picture perfect serene beach dotted with colourful fishing boats and surrounded by traditional fishing villages. It is located about 30 km north of Kuala Terengganu. On clear sunny days, the famous Pulau Redang and Pulau Bidong are visible from the beach. Try seafood tempura at the Batu Rakit beach stalls that serve a variety of tempura such as fish, crabs, squid, prawns, stingray, bananas, keropok and the refreshing coconut drink.

How to get there There are public buses that ply Kuala Besut and Jertih from Kuala Terengganu. It takes 1/2 hour drive to reach the beach.

PANTAI KUALA ABANG

Situated 10 km north of Dungun town, night walking around the beach in Kuala Abang is an exhilarating experience with the rising moon casting traces of shimmering light on the calm sea from the horizon up to the shore.

Unlike other beaches, Kuala Abang beach has rock formations right in front of the sea, thus creating a unique landscape. The resting areas available are also perfect for visitors to unwind during a long and tiring journey.

How to get there A 15 minutes drive up north from Dungun Town is all it takes to reach Kuala Abang beach.

PANTAI KELULUT

Located between Marang and Rantau Abang, Kelulut Beach is the preferred weekend destination for locals. It has all the basic facilities and is an ideal picnic spot for family members to enjoy. It is also a favourite stopover for travelers plying the coastal route. The row of colourful food stalls offer everything from local delicacies to Thai and western cuisine. With Pulau Kapas offshore in the background, visitors to this beach will be captivated by its natural beauty and serenity. The weekly night market is held here attracting locals and foreigners alike.

How to get there There are public buses that ply the route to Dungun and the journey takes a 40 minute drive south of Kuala Terengganu.

PANTAI PENARIK

Visitors seeking a place to unwind far away from the hustle and bustle of city life will immediately be drawn to Pantai Penarik in Setiu district. This is yet another ‘postcard-perfect’ setting, complete with fishing villages and typical Malay traditional houses. The beachfront fringed with swaying coconut and pine trees with scenic islands offshore provides a picturesque view. Watch local fisherman with their catch of the day return to shore where you can buy some freshly caught fish, crabs or prawns for an unforgettable barbeque dinner by the sea.

How to get there Drive up north from Kuala Terengganu, approximately 70 km through the pleasant coastal route. There is also a public bus that offers regular service to Kuala Besut.

PANTAI BUKIT KELUANG

Pantai Bukit Keluang is located in Besut, the northern most district bordering Kelantan State, some 140 km away. The rocky outcrop and caves give Bukit Keluang beach an added advantage over other beaches in the vicinity. Tourists can explore the nocturnal species in the caves. Walkways built for access to the top of the hill provides breathtaking views of the open South China Sea, with Pulau Perhentian providing the picturesque background.

How to get there Drive up north from Kuala Terengganu, approximately 140 km through the pleasant coastal route. There are taxi services available from Kuala Besut to the beach.

PANTAI AIR TAWAR

Pantai Air Tawar is a pristine and scenic beach overlooking Pulau Perhentian and is ideal for family and group outings. Visitors can just sit under the shade of coconut or pine trees lulled by the soothing sea breeze while enjoying fresh coconut drink and sumptuous seafood. There are ample parking spaces, recreational facilities, gazebos, picnic sites and toilets. The serene waters might look tempting for a swim but beware of the strong undertow that lurks beneath the calmness of the surface.
