Another great year for schools golf. First event of the year was the Stirling Invitational held at Dundonald in Scotland in September. The ISGA entered a team of 3 girls for the first time. The R&A world ranking event is one of two University events that take place each year to showcase the wealth of talented players in full time education. The event had Universities from the US, Canada, Ireland and the UK taking part. A great result for the ISGA team who won the team event with Ashleigh Greenham taking the Individual title and Ellie Goodall taking third spot. The ISGA pick teams to represent schools golf for both the

Stirling Invitational and the Exeter Invitational. "October saw the Junior Schools Cup and the Schools Cup take place. A team event in which teachers play with their own students. This gives a great opportunity for teachers to play in a competitive event with their own players. The Junior Schools Cup was won by

Birkdale School with a team of brothers pictured above. The Seniors schools cup was the start of a phenomenal year for Whitgift pictured with their teacher beating their close rivals Trinity. "During October half term teams traveled to Spain to take part in the inaugural ISGA European Championships. Held at the Villiatana resort which boasts two Jack Niclaus courses. Yet again Whitgift reigned supreme winning the gross team event with Winchester

taking the nett trophy. "The next European Championships are set to take place at the Penina Golf Resort in Portugal next February half term. "Full results of the tournaments can be

seen on the isga website "isga.co.uk

September saw the start of the ISGA Schools Matchplay Tournament with a record number of schools taking part. The country was split into 17 areas each with around 8 schools per area."The Tournament format is 3 student team that plays scratch matchplay against their drawn team. Schools knocked out in their first round enter the plate knockout which is a stableford under full handicap. Thereby giving all schools a chance to progress further with National finals for both the main Tournament and the Plate.""As the tournament progressed there were a number of new schools making the National finals which were held at Carnoustie. In the end 7 new schools reached the finals which is great for the tournament.""After a foggy start, the National Finals at Carnoustie saw the sun shine on day one. After the first days play 3 schools ( Millfield, Wellington & Whitgift) were all on the same score so all to play for on the second day."All the teams had a buffet dinner in the Carnoustie Hotel where the trophies were presented to all teams reaching the National Finals. The Teachers trophies were presented that evening. Rob Moore (Winchester) won the gross and Kevin Searle (New Hall) won the nett."After the second day, Jamie Li from Millfield came away with the Individual title. He picked up his trophy, a Galvin Green windproof and a personalised belt from Heraldic Gems."Whitgift won the event by 3 shots over Wellington College ( last time winners at Carnoustie)"Full results and write up can be seen here""Whitgift players (L-R) George Mullins, Joe Carmody-Firth, Harvey Byers all received their trophies, GALVIN GREEN tops and a sterling silver ring each from Heraldic Gems

The British Schools and Colleges Tour got off to a great start with more schools and colleges taking part this year. Despite cuts in funding to lots of colleges they fought to keep their golf programme going. "All credit to the colleges who have found alternative ways to fund their programme.""The National finals took place at Ganton over 2 days where previous winners Hartpury took the team title. The Golf College took the nett trophy."Harry Hall (Truro) took the Individual trophy, along with a Galvin Green waterproof and a Heraldic Gems silver belt buckle. Daniel Godin took second place and Joe Fryer 3rd place. Gee won-Park took the girls

trophy. All received Galvin Green tops, belts or hats. The British Schools are looking to hold 3 one day events next year to allow players from schools and colleges that do not have a team."The first event will be the Ladies Junior Open to be held at Sunningdale Ladies on 13 October."Players will also be picked from the order of merit to represent the ISGA at University world ranking events played in the UK. "

ISGA & British Schools players picked to play in the 2013/14 season were as follows: "

The Stirling Invitational a team of 3 girls = Ashleigh Greenham (Forest), Ellie Goodall(Balby Carr) & Gee Won - Park (Hartpury)""The Exeter Invitational team of 6 boys = Murray Naysmith (Merchiston), George Mullins (Whitgift), Ali Thurlow (Stewarts Melville), Tom Sloman ( Hartpury), Taylor Carter & Joe Fryer

Dealing with bad etiquette on the golf course!"Golf is not generally known as a sport where players show aggression or bad behaviour, but as more professional players are being seen to swear, spit and throw clubs it has become a problem. The ISGA conducted a short survey with over 100 teachers to see how they combat the growing trend."Here we have picked the best answers we feel to the questions posed.""Q How do you deal with swearing, and general bad etiquette"A If Excessive, repeated or LOUD, then certainly discuss with the culprit to the extent if it continues they will be withdrawn from representation.""Q How do you deal with club throwing and damage of equipment"A Reprimand…unacceptable behaviour repeat offence would mean removal from golf program.""Q How do you deal with cheating"A Stripped of any awards, and dropped from team.""Q How do you explain tour players behaviour if students say they do it?"A They do not represent the School."A Invariably they are the players that do not win!""Q Do you turn a misdemeanour into a positive..if so how"A No need....pupils are well motivated enough...and by and large understand and abide by etiquette as a matter of course."A yes, we will use psychological delivery."A If they improve their behaviour then positively rewarded with positive comments and re-selection for teams ""Q Tour player you would recommend as a good example of a role model"A Jack Nicklaus’s putt concession to Tony Jacklin springs to mind."A We don’t bother with the role model thing as we are trying to get them to live their lives as themselves, according to their own inner values, rather than copying someone else""Q Tour player you would not recommend as a role model"A Over 70% of those surveyed said Tiger Woods""The ISGA has taken a strong stance on bad etiquette as they wish all players to enjoy the team spirit it has as its main tournament ethos

Wrag  Barn  Junior  Sec=on  is  a  thriving  part  of  this  extremely  successful  Wiltshire  golf  club,  boas=ng  in  excess  of  30  junior/cadet  compe==ons  per  year,  a  structured  coaching  programme  run  by  the  club  Professional  Team:  Ian  Ridsdale,  Richard  ScarroC  and  David  Curl  and  “Junior  Week”.

The  club  has  a  6  hole  Academy  Course  on  which  Cadet  Level  1s  play,  providing  a  great  introduc=on  to  our  youngest  golfers.    Cadet  Level  2s  are  those  young  golfers  progressing  to  full  GONGU  handicap  status,  playing  their  compe==ons  on  the  main  course  over  shortened  9  holes.

Those  juniors  that  have  achieved  full  CONGU  handicap  status  take  part  in  numerous  junior  compe==ons  and  other  club  events.    The  Wrag  Barn  Junior  Team  has  enjoyed  great  success  in  recent  years,  winning  the  Wiltshire  Junior  County  Championship  in  2012,  2013  and  2014,  and  the  Wiltshire  Junior  Knock-‐Out  Winners  2012.    The  pinnacle  of  the  Team’s  achievements  was  progressing  through  the  Regional  and  Na=onal  stages  of  the  Junior  Team  Golf  Home  Interna=onals  Championship  and  represen=ng  England  in  the  Final  held  at  Antequerra  GC,  Spain  in  March  2014.

Junior  Week  at  Wrag  Barn  Golf  Club  is  now  the  most  important  date  in  the  diary  for  many  of  our  young  golfers  (and  their  parents).    Culmina=ng  in  presenta=on  evening,  Junior  Week  is  seven  days  of  skills  challenges,  coaching,  compe==ons,  FUN  and  FRIENDSHIP  for  all  levels  of  our  junior  membership  and  is  the  highlight  of  our  golfing  year.    During  the  week  matches  are  held  with  the  Ladies,  Senior’s  and  Men’s  sec=ons  of  the  club.    The  Junior  and  Cadet  Championships,  held  during  the  week,  show  the  strength  of  rivalry  but  depth  of  friendship  between  our  young  golfers.  All  three  2014  Champions  had  a  great  ‘story’  behind  each  individual  achievement:  Cadet  Level  1  Champion  Oliver  Webb  shot  an  academy  course  record;  Libbi  Mulcock  won  the  Cadet  Level  2  Championship,  having  been  Level  1  Champion  in  2013;  Max  Mulcock  kept  it  in  the  family  and  was  Junior  Champion  2014,  coached  by  Richard  ScarroC  (PGA  Head  Teaching  Professional)  who  himself  won  the  Wrag  Barn  Junior  Championship  in  2002,  2004  and  2005!

University Golf"Buzzing  about  Golf

With  the  start  of  the  University  Golf  season  just  around  the  corner,  the  University  of  Exeter’s  new  Student  Golf  Coach  Steve  Buzza  cannot  wait  to  get  started.

There’s  plenty  to  be  excited  about.  With  one  of  the  strongest  University  Golf  Programmes  in  the  UK  and  the  new  Vic  Ambler  Golf  Centre  which  opened  on  Streatham  Campus  in  May,  Steve  has  high  hopes  for  the  coming  season.

“I’m  very  excited.”  He  explained.  “We’ll  be  fielding  five  teams  this  year  which  is  a  first  for  the  University.  To  be  able  to  have  so  many  players  compe=ng  is  testament  to  how  big  the  club  is  and  the  success  of  the  programme.  It’s  one  thing  to  have  good  individuals,  but  to  have  depth  throughout  the  club  is  very  important  and  pushes  players  to  move  forward.”

Having  first  picked  up  a  club  at  the  age  of  11,  Steve  quickly  rose  to  play  at  county  level  achieving  a  handicap  of  +1  before  turning  pro  in  2011.  At  Exeter  he’ll  work  closely  with  High  Performance  Golf  Manager  Craig  Townsend  to  deliver  coaching  plans  across  the  Student  Golf  Club.

Maintaining  the  University’s  high  standards  will  be  no  mean  feat;  the  club  were  crowned  2013  BUCS  Champions  and  Premier  League  Winners,  finished  fourth  at  the  European  University  Golf  Championships  the  same  year  and  sent  two  players,  Ka=e  Bradbury  and  Laurie  PoCer  to  the  World  University  Championships  at  Cranz  Montana  this  season.

His  recruitment  also  follows  the  comple=on  of  the  Vic  Ambler  Golf  Centre  at  the  University’s  Sports  Park.  Built  in  conjunc=on  with  the  R&A  and  the  University  of  Exeter’s  Annual  Fund  and  Alumni  Golf  Network,  the  unique  all-‐weather  prac=ce  facility  features  two  greens,  a  bunker  and  driving  nets  designed  to  help  the  student  club  and  community  players.

“It’s  bedding  in  really  well.”  Steve  added.  “We’ve  been  running  some  junior  programmes  on  it  over  the  summer  and  it’ll  be  great  for  the  golf  club  to  have  a  dedicated  performance  space  on  campus.

“I’ve  worked  with  Craig  before  and  we  have  a  great  rela=onship,  his  golf  knowledge  is  fantas=c.  We  want  to  work  together  to  build  what  is  already  a  very  strong  programme.

“Access  can  be  a  big  issue  with  golf,  and  this  facility  is  perfect  for  breaking  down  those  barriers.  It’s  also  given  us  a  chance  to  integrate  our  performance  training  and  strength  and  condi=oning  more  closely.

“We’ve  got  some  excellent  players  coming  through  this  year  so  it  will  be  interes=ng  to  see  how  it  goes.  The  aim  is  to  become  renowned  as  the  best  golfing  ins=tu=on  in  the  country;  we’re  certainly  on  track  for  that.”

BECOME  A  (CLUB)  HEAD  MASTER

When it comes to giving your pupils an edge in golf, there’s one coaching technology which is always top of the class, whatever the weather.

The market-leading Game Changer 2 (GC2) launch monitor, from Foresight Sports, ensures it’s now possible to coach or practise, indoors or outside, at any time of the day or night, no matter what the weather.

Critically it provides the most accurate ball flight data available today – a point not wasted on the world’s top players, Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott, who, among hundreds of other tour professionals, both use the technology. Nor is it lost on the world’s leading club manufacturers such as Titleist, Cleveland/Srixon, Cobra/Puma, PING and TaylorMade who have also adopted and recommend the system.

Launched in 2010, the GC2 is now widely accepted as the golf industry’s most accurate tool for teaching professionals and their students. Its revolutionary use of ultra-high-speed cameras, to directly measure the exact movement of the dimple patterns on the golf ball, ensures totally accurate, pure and reliable data no matter where it is used.

Having been designed from day one to work perfectly inside and outdoors, and being so light and small it fits easily into a golf bag, the GC2 is also the most flexible technology in golf. Professionals and their pupils can use the GC2 outside on the range, on the course, even on and around the short game area, to analyse and work on every aspect of the game and every shot in the bag.

When taken indoors the GC2 becomes the heart of any swing room or indoor studio, providing

accurate real-time ball flight on a host of courses and practice areas. It also expands seamlessly into the most trusted and chosen golf simulator on the market.

This level of accuracy and flexibility has secured its position as the chosen technology of brands as diverse as leading golf retailer American Golf, Woburn Golf Club and the Sky Sports Shot Centre. In the schools’ sector, Wellington College, in Berkshire, is installing a full simulator with video analysis for its students to create the ultimate indoor golf academy.

Page 27: ISGA year end edition 2014

"Having ‘changed the game’ within the ball-flight analysis sector, Foresight then changed the game again with the launch of their unique Head Measurement Technology (HMT).

The HMT system, an add-on to the GC2 unit, applies the same ultra-high-speed camera technology to directly measure and analyse the movement of the club-head into impact with the ball. Rather than being behind the golfer and trying to calculate or estimate club-head data, the HMT sits to the side and slightly in front of the player, ensuring it can directly image and measure all critical club-head data – including impact location, and dynamic lie – something never achieved by any other technology to date.

One of the world’s leading golf coaches, the Golf Channel’s host of School of Golf and the 2008 PGA National Teacher of the Year, Martin Hall, explained: “If you are serious about teaching better or playing better you simply have to have the GC2 and HMT.

“As a teacher I am especially interested in the movement of the golf club into and through the hitting area, and, it is my experience, that GC2 and HMT is second to none in measuring that element of the swing process. In short, I will be using Foresight Sports GC2 and HMT from now on in my coaching. The data it presents is phenomenal and it presents it in a way which is easy for the student, professional, or amateur to understand.”

And that exact same technology that world-class coaches like Martin Hall use with their tour players is now readily affordable and available for your coaches and students as well.

What’s more, with the cost of a full immersive indoor golf simulator, installed, starting at just £27 + VAT per day, with Foresight’s competitive finance package, you can be growing and improving golf within the school, as well as making money, from day one, whether as an extra-curricular activity, an extra sporting option or as a holiday course.

Wentworth Golf Club owner and entrepreneur Richard Caring reminisces on his time at Millfield

Born  in  Finchley,  North  London,  Richard  Caring  was  the  middle  child  of  Louis  Caring  (né  Caringi)  and  Sylvia  Parnes.  At  the  age  of  three  and  a  half,  Caring  had  his  first  experience  of  golf  at  PoYers  Bar  Gold  Club  in  HerZordshire.  The  young  Caring  showed  early  prowess  in  the  sport  and  was  soon  playing  off  of  scratch.  He  went  on  to  represent  Middlesex  at  county  level  and  earned  himself  a  sports  scholarship  to  pres5gious  Millfield  School  in  Somerset.  Known  as  'Dickie'  at  school,  Caring  excelled  at  history,  but  golf  remained  his  great  love.  A^er  leaving  Millfield,  aged  16,  he  followed  his  father  into  a  career  in  fashion,  spending  many  years  living  and  working  in  Hong  Kong.  He  also  began  to  invest  in  property,  acquiring  the  Camden  Market  complex  in  North  London,  before  inves5ng  in  the  pres5gious  Wentworth  Golf  Club  in  Surrey,  in  2004.  He  later  commented,  'Wentworth  is  to  golf  what  Wimbledon  is  to  tennis.  It's  priceless.'  Caring  diversified  his  porZolio  further,  moving  into  the  restaurant  and  private  members'  clubs  arena.

"

Here,  Richard  Caring  takes  5me  out  of  his  extremely  busy  schedule  to  reminisce  about  his  days  at  Millfield.

"Q: What was your first memory of boarding at Millfield? RC: Feeling deserted by my parents … but I recovered when a football game started in the playground.""

Q: Did you play any other sports apart from golf during your time at Millfield? RC: I had to play almost every sport. I managed to losefour teeth to Gareth Edwards, hooker in the rugby team"

"Q: Did you get into trouble?  RC: Yes – disrespect [for] one particularly snobby prefect. Also going to the Black Cat, which was out of bounds in Street. [The Black Cat was a local café and popular teen hangout in the local village.]"

Q: Who was your favourite teacher at school? Why?"

RC: Boss – he taught me how to play bunker shots. ['Boss' was the nickname of educator and Millfield founder Rollo John Oliver Meyer, who was also a first-class cricketer]. (pictured right)"

Page 36: ISGA year end edition 2014

"

Q: Do you keep in touch with any friends from your school days?RC: Mike Burns and John Graveney [who were both on the golf team with Caring and are featured in the photograph"

Q: You left school when you were 16, what did you want to do?RC: Go back!

Q: What was the best or worst piece of advice given to you at school?RC: Best advice – to 'believe in yourself'."

Q What is your best or worst memory of school?RC: The best – playing Burnham & Berrow Golf Club in the wind! Worst -–Hearing of the death of a friend on his way back to school in a car crash.

"

Q: Is there anything you do differently at school given the chance?RC: I would stay there until I was 35! [Caring left, aged 16.]!

Q: Now knowing all you do now and looking back at your time at school, what advice would you give to people leaving school?RC: You have been blessed by having the chance of experiencing Millfield [or similar such schools] – don’t waste the knowledge or the experience."

Thank you so much, Richard Caring. It's been an absolute pleasure.
